Very simply one of the worst movies ever made. Anyone who pretends to have enjoyed watching this movie, and believe me we both know you're pretending, has what is referred to as bad taste. There is a big difference between having no taste and having bad taste, the latter being a far worse crime. Someone with no taste might really love a band like Nickelback; this person doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground, but they couldn't care less, they're a moron, they know it, they don't know why or how, they know nothing about music, Nickelback is their band and they go with it... Now someone with bad taste is for arguments sake equally clueless, however they've garnered from some type of social cues what it is someone with actual taste, a genuinely perceptive individual who has been exposed to and recognized beauty throughout their lifespan, first naturally and then artistically, appreciates. A person with truly bad taste then tries to play the role of someone with actual taste. They mimic a person with taste. And they end up listening to bands like The Arcade Fire and The Black Keys, and post youtube comments about how Parasite was "my favorite movie of 2019."

What I like about Parasite is that Bong doesnt ignore the ugly parts of being poor. He doesn't end the movie with the family being rich or happy, but with them miserable or dead or trapped. He understands that being poor isnt a problem you can fix by being clever or working hard, but something that hardly ever goes away despite your best efforts. I think a lot of movies have happy endings that draw attention away from the root problems that they are addressing, but Bong Joon Ho makes you face them head on and confront the ugliness in our society.

Bong purposefully included it to make the viewer hopeful that ki-woo could win in the end, but the last shot of him in his basement insinuates that it is all wishful thinking and that he will never be able to escape poverty. Also I think that the idea of a "plan" is sort of a reoccurring thing throughout the movie about how plans never work out the way we want them to. Ki-taek has a plan towards the end but of course that goes awry, so Bong has set up from the start that hopeful plans, especially ones that are working against forces like capitalism and systemic poverty, never go as intended. I love how he does that as a writer, always sets up stuff even as seemingly insignificant as that and builds them into a larger theme : )
Bong actually called the Oscars a “local film fest,” because it only deals with local Hollywood films. 🤯😂 His perspective completely blew my mind. The fact that he won at the “local” American award show, blew my mind once more.

Me too.. I also imagined it to have some sort of supernatural taste to it... Like the novels or anime.. But it was completely opposite. Its all real life and real time story. Still scary tho
Also as a side note about everything has a payoff: the paintings by the Park boy are of the ghost/the man that lives in the bunker, you can tell by how distinguished the eyes are
There was a scene towards the beginning when "kevin" arrives at the Park's house for the first time and moon-gweng has to wake up the mother. There is a line in the glass paines separating the two and moon-gweng passes it in order to wake her up further driving home the crossing the line theme
You also see the vertical line in the glass pane dividing Mr. Kim and Mr. Park when the former goes to the latter's workplace. And you see the line again in the vertical pillar in the dining room when Mrs. Park is interviewing the Kim son and on the refrigerator door separating the two in the kitchen and in the vertical pillar when the two of them ascend the stairs and in the fluorescent above them on the second floor. The vertical line in the glass pane reappears when the son is looking out the window at the birthday party.
I loved this video. You really opened my eyes to the symbolism and theme of this movie, a lot of which I did not see when I watched it. The elevations, hollow rock.... genius. I guess it is difficult to see foreshadowing the first time... i guess for me it is. But now it makes all sense. Thank you. Loved this.
Definitely lots of great symbolisms and metaphors! Another metaphor that gets washed away is the ramen/steak thing they have. So, I think when I watched it the subtitles simply said 'sirloin', but it's actually 한우 or Hanu, which is extremely high quality korean beef (I guess you can consider it the equivalent to a 30 day dry aged prime steak or wagyu beef). So, why is that detail important? Because the juxtaposition of this rich people food being mixed into ramen (which is super cheap) is another metaphor for the juxtaposition of the rich and poor.
My favorite film of the 2010's decade. The reason why it won Best picture was simply because it was so good that not many people who voted in the academy actually disliked it. It also probably had the most #1 picks

I agree with you about Burning. Lee Chang Dong is a master - even Bong Joon Ho has mentioned him in several interviews. His film Secret Sunshine is one of the most beautiful yet painful experiences.
I don't care about the Oscars, especially after the latest flop for the 2018 films, but I am happy about the 2019 ones. I am happy that "Parasite" won them because Bong deserves attention and perhaps more people will be inspired to check out more foreign films with subtitles, and I am happy "The Lighthouse" didn't win anything because it'll prove that a film doesn't need to win Oscars in order to be popular and remembered fondly in the years. If the Cornetto Trilogy isn't proof of that already.
I lived in South Korea in the early 20-oughts...Watching this film really took me back there. The stratification of wealth, the VISIBLE difference between the rich and poor. The way they talk about SMELL and feelings in this movie is incredibly accurate to the experience of being there. A lot of Korean cinema focuses on despair and pain. Their style of drama is so depraved, it comes across as anti-social and inhuman quite often. The films of Park Chan-Wook often come to mind. "Parasite" was incredibly well made and eye-opening for foreign audiences.
How can you not be political when the theme and whole purpose of the film is an inherently political message? The fact it resonates so well with so many that would otherwise think nothing of the grip global capitalism has on us all, I feel is a great opportunity to discuss that message and the core ideology behind it

It's actually proof that politics can be entertaining, interesting, and haunting, because of how closely it relates to the human experience. You’re so right! Burning is incredible as well... I love them both I couldn’t pick though. Parasite had more humor so maybe I prefer it. But Burning was darker in some ways and I love that mysterious vibe.
I’ve been a great fan of South Korean movies for a long time and I’m elated that SK cinema is finally getting the attention it deserves! Parasite is brilliant but it is by far not an isolated genius. There are several SK films that are as thought provoking, haunting, deep, and masterfully made as Parasite. The kind of movies that expand and consequently change your perspective on society, culture, the human condition, and class for the rest of your life. It’s a whole new viewing experience where the audience is assumed to be smart and analytical, therefore, the film will never insist upon you a certain perspective or emotion like many Hollywood films do but instead challenges the viewer to find meaning in the movie even if it takes several viewing to fully grasp its genius. This is why I’m so glad that Parasite won, not just for the sake of international cinema but for the sake of the mostly Hollywood focused viewer who is just waiting to have their minds blown. Here is my personal list of SK movie masterpieces that deserve more attention from international audiences... Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Memories of Murder, The Wailing, Mother, Chaser, Yellow Sea, Burning.

The interesting thing about Burning is that I liked it but didn't find it on par with certain other Korean films (like Parasite or the Vengeance trilogy for example) But it haunted me. I kept thinking back to it again and again because it does leave you with so much frustrating but also exciting ambiguity that you keep returning to it to gain some kind of certainty but you'll never return to it being completely satisfied that you have genuinely "figured it out" And thus, it is in addition to commenting on class also somewhat realistic in depicting the human condition as one plagued by ambiguity and uncertainty
The only thing that made me mad about this movie is when they killed off the daughter. Like shes the only one in the family who has a potential to move up the social ladder with her charisma and wit
But every memeber of the family had potential. The father was an excellent driver showed in the coffe scene where he takes perfect turns in the car. The mother was an excellent cook as she managed to prepare the last meal that the rich mother wanted (sorry don't remember the names) while under preassure and following some tutorial. And still the rich mother was showed to ate it all. Maybe the only member of the family that doesn't seem to be particularly good at what he was doing was the son since we don't see an improvement in the daughter's english or anything like that, but still. Saying the other daughter was the only one with talent is just not true.

I just got the Criterion Collection disc, which comes with the black and white version. It further emphasizes the high low, light dark. More evidence of Bong’s thoughtfulness and genius!
This is the masterpiece because of simplicity.1st half is very easy to understand and predictable too which give confidence to audiences but another half give shock to audience which makes masterpiece tag.
Burning is practically flawless in my eyes, I fucking love that film (moreso than Parasite) but I'm glad to see Korean cinema break more into the mainstream Western conscious
There is no heresy in preferring Burning, it is an absolutely astounding film and better, more interesting than Parasite. It is just that Parasite is made to be more accessible than the cryptic Burning, but unraveling the mystery of the later is what makes it such a satisfying watch.
Burning is a masterpiece. Definitely not for everyone. Steven Yeun's sociopathic performance is so chilling and understated, you that the protagonist we've been following is arguably more psychologically damaged.

Absolutely loved this movie. So much detail went into every scene. I loved the dad crawling along the floor and then the light comes on and he stops moving hahahaha. Humour and Suspense put together perfectly. Absolute classic!
Jojo Rabbit was my personal favorite to win Best Picture. That being said, after I saw Parasite I totally understood why it did. It is such a terrific film. Its a great mix of comedy and tension, all while pointing out the class inequality in South Kore. It has a message but doesnt sacrifice its entertainment factor

When Jessica examines the drawing dasong drew she told the housekeeper if she can have privacy with just the madame. This might’ve been a hint that they don’t want the housekeeper to realizes her husband is on the drawing.😳
i loved this movie but it appears i’m the only one who doesn’t think that parks were parasites. they were sometimes pretentious or mean but they live in this environment and they can’t act the other way. they were shown nice and generous and i don’t understand what horrible things they did except for shaming poor people for their smell when it obviously was awful and they had a right to be unsatisfied with their servants smell
they were parasites because they literally could not exist without lower class labor. its mentioned, for example, that the wife could not keep up with housework and they would be in trouble if they couldnt find a housekeeper/maid fast. their existence is entirely dependent on the work of the lowerclass citizens they ignore/look down on, just as much as the kim family needed to be employed to make money
It's more of the fact that they benefit on the backs of the Kim's emotional and physical labour. They're so separated from actual sadness of poor people but for them to live their extremely wealthy lifestyle, they have to depend on so many lives and resources and so in that way, they're parasites too in some way.
Again, I assume that the concept of the "smell" is actually not even a thing. Mr Park assumes that because the people work for him, they have a certain standard 'line' as he says, which they shouldn't cross. I don't think they actually smelled or were unclean, but Mr Parks assumes this because he knows that Mr Kim is poor, and the Parks would rather just ignore and shield themselves from the sadness and reality of poor people. I mean this is what I think atleast lol
It left me with the question, that who were actually the parasites? Who used whom? Who exploited and manipulated whom? And many more of such questions, a much needed film considering the current neo liberal economic and social structure and scenario
I'd like to say though, in the elevation is a running theme in the movie, the Kim's live below the level of the toilet, maybe the same level of the sewer, the tons and tons of shit, pee, rodent, roaches and all bad things maybe even below that. That's shown by the zemi-basement toilet that's on an elevated platform. Meanwhile, the bunker is on the same level of the toilet. And also quite a bit distant from it separated by the narrow way.
The moral of the story is that wealth does not matter but family does. As long as you have the latter but not the former you can be happy, if the reverse you will not be happy. And that you should avoid sin because it will lead to your downfall. Lust: relationship between the boy and his student makes him suffer delusions of grandeur. Greed: their obsessions with exploiting the family by replacing all their servants and their desire to obtain the mansion itself. Gluttony: eating all the food and drinking all the alcohol, that is not theirs, while the family is away. And their unwillingness to share the families wealth with the former made and her husband. Pride: thinking they are above criticism and negative comments even thought they are harsh truths. Wrath: wanting to inflict violence upon others for disrespect. Sloth does not apply as they do work and help the family with what they're hired for.
I mean, parasite is so popular and talked about before and now, but for me, it's kind of unforgettable. Tbh i clearly don't remember the whole plot now... Don't get me wrong, it's a good/great film, but not as iconic as others claims it to be. Is this what overhype is all about?? It won because (1) under the preferential ballot system and there being Nine nominees a film can win even if it doesn’t have the most Number 1 votes. (2) Many voters were embarrassed that GREEN BOOK beat ROMA the previous year. (3) It was the best movie of the year.

While I like Parasite, it would not have been my pick to win Best Picture. Of the films nominated, The Irishman was my favorite choice. I loved the story and enjoyed the character interactions the film had. I also love the works of Scorsese, which a lot of people do, so I’ll admit there’s bias on my part. Parasite just didn’t do a lot for me when I saw it. Maybe the hype was a little too big for me, but I thought the film was just alright. Nothing against Foreign Films, Akira Kurosawa was one of the best filmmakers of all time, but I think there were other foreign films more deserving of best picture in the past. Be it a Kurosawa film, Fellini film, Bergman film or any other fantastic film made by another incredible filmmaker. I’ve only seen Snowpiercer before Parasite, so I don’t know too much about Bong’s filmography, but I wasn’t blown away like so many other people were about Parasite. This is a good video though, and while I wish another film was up for a lot of awards instead of being shut out except for one Oscar, everyone’s thoughts on what should have won or should have been up for Best Picture will always be different.
You should watch once more and more.. each time you watch it again you will appreciate more about the film. It has so many layer and substance to discover. It totally deserves Oscar best picture.

The Motion pictures academy felt/looked bad for not giving awards to so many great Korean movies like Burning, Chaser, Yellow Sea (Oldboy ffs) so they gave all of it to Parasite
1917 should have won best director. It embodied what a "picture" is. There's scenes in that movie that had me in aw and nothing was being said by characters, just moving pictures.. Parasite had a more original story and writing. But 1917 was directed better..
The only thing 1917 was good for is the cinematography. Direction was horrible when you take off the cinematography. If you actually know anything about WWI and just war in general you’d be astonished at the lack of respect for the subject and the lack of research.
Basically all 1917 had over Parasite was the cinematography was better. mise en scène is what makes a film good, Parasite had like 4/5 of what mise en scène is. 1917 maybe had 2.

Hmm, I can't say I really "got" the movie, it was a competently directed, acted and written movie for sure, but at the same time I wasn't really sure why it got so many awards. The ending kinda just happens, foreshadowed? Maybe, but it all felt kinda sudden. And that kid should have died for having that fking rock throw on his goddamn head twice, there is no way Ki-jun can die from a shoulder stab due to blood loss and Ki-woon who had no help for a decent bit of time AND was double tapped can survive, I call immense bullshit even if the rock was hollow.

I agree with you about Burning. Lee Chang Dong is a master - even Bong Joon Ho has mentioned him in several interviews. His film Secret Sunshine is one of the most beautiful yet painful experiences.
I don't care about the Oscars, especially after the latest flop for the 2018 films, but I am happy about the 2019 ones.
I am happy that "Parasite" won them because Bong deserves attention and perhaps more people will be inspired to check out more foreign films with subtitles, and I am happy "The Lighthouse" didn't win anything because it'll prove that a film doesn't need to win Oscars in order to be popular and remembered fondly in the years. If the Cornetto Trilogy isn't proof of that already.

I lived in South Korea in the early 20-oughts...Watching this film really took me back there. The stratification of wealth, the VISIBLE difference between the rich and poor. The way they talk about SMELL and feelings in this movie is incredibly accurate to the experience of being there.
A lot of Korean cinema focuses on despair and pain. Their style of drama is so depraved, it comes across as anti-social and inhuman quite often. The films of Park Chan-Wook often come to mind.
"Parasite" was incredibly well made and eye-opening for foreign audiences.
How can you not be political when the theme and whole purpose of the film is an inherently political message? The fact it resonates so well with so many that would otherwise think nothing of the grip global capitalism has on us all, I feel is a great opportunity to discuss that message and the core ideology behind it
Thank you. I liked the video, but Parasite is politics incarnate. It's actually proof that politics can be entertaining, interesting, and haunting, because of how closely it relates to the human experience. Especially because he WAS getting political before- the class divide is politics 101.

I actually did not care about the Oscar after Parasite won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. It just solidified the movie as the masterpiece of the year.

You’re so right! Burning is incredible as well... I love them both I couldn’t pick though. Parasite had more humor so maybe I prefer it. But Burning was darker in some ways and I love that mysterious vibe.
I’ve been a great fan of South Korean movies for a long time and I’m elated that SK cinema is finally getting the attention it deserves! Parasite is brilliant but it is by far not an isolated genius.
There are several SK films that are as thought provoking, haunting, deep, and masterfully made as Parasite. The kind of movies that expand and consequently change your perspective on society, culture, the human condition, and class for the rest of your life. It’s a whole new viewing experience where the audience is assumed to be smart and analytical, therefore, the film will never insist upon you a certain perspective or emotion like many Hollywood films do but instead challenges the viewer to find meaning in the movie even if it takes several viewing to fully grasp its genius.
This is why I’m so glad that Parasite won, not just for the sake of international cinema but for the sake of the mostly Hollywood focused viewer who is just waiting to have their minds blown.
Here is my personal list of SK movie masterpieces that deserve more attention from international audiences...
Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Memories of Murder, The Wailing, Mother, Chaser, Yellow Sea, Burning.

Korean movies, in general, are really good and thought provoking and I'm so happy Parasite got to be a pioneer movie 🎬
The interesting thing about Burning is that I liked it but didn't find it on par with certain other Korean films (like Parasite or the Vengeance trilogy for example)
But it haunted me. I kept thinking back to it again and again because it does leave you with so much frustrating but also exciting ambiguity that you keep returning to it to gain some kind of certainty but you'll never return to it being completely satisfied that you have genuinely "figured it out"
And thus, it is in addition to commenting on class also somewhat realistic in depicting the human condition as one plagued by ambiguity and uncertainty
The only thing that made me mad about this movie is when they killed off the daughter. Like shes the only one in the family who has a potential to move up the social ladder with her charisma and wit
well that was the point, wasnt it? the only family member with potential to actually change their status was murdered
But every memeber of the family had potential. The father was an excellent driver showed in the coffe scene where he takes perfect turns in the car. The mother was an excellent cook as she managed to prepare the last meal that the rich mother wanted (sorry don't remember the names) while under preassure and following some tutorial. And still the rich mother was showed to ate it all. Maybe the only member of the family that doesn't seem to be particularly good at what he was doing was the son since we don't see an improvement in the daughter's english or anything like that, but still. Saying the other daughter was the only one with talent is just not true.
I don’t understand what people don’t get about opinions. Like if you don’t think the movie is good then fine but don’t try and shame someone for liking it and saying they have “bad taste”.

I just got the Criterion Collection disc, which comes with the black and white version. It further emphasizes the high low, light dark. More evidence of Bong’s thoughtfulness and genius!
This is the masterpiece because of simplicity.1st half is very easy to understand and predictable too which give confidence to audiences but another half give shock to audience which makes masterpiece tag.
Burning is practically flawless in my eyes, I fucking love that film (moreso than Parasite) but I'm glad to see Korean cinema break more into the mainstream Western conscious
There is no heresy in preferring Burning, it is an absolutely astounding film and better, more interesting than Parasite. It is just that Parasite is made to be more accessible than the cryptic Burning, but unraveling the mystery of the later is what makes it such a satisfying watch.

Burning is a masterpiece. Definitely not for everyone. Steven Yeun's sociopathic performance is so chilling and understated, you that the protagonist we've been following is arguably more psychologically damaged.

That being said, after I saw Parasite I totally understood why it did. It is such a terrific film. Its a great mix of comedy and tension, all while pointing out the class inequality in South Kore.

i loved this movie but it appears i’m the only one who doesn’t think that parks were parasites. they were sometimes pretentious or mean but they live in this environment and they can’t act the other way. they were shown nice and generous and i don’t understand what horrible things they did except for shaming poor people for their smell when it obviously was awful and they had a right to be unsatisfied with their servants smell
they were parasites because they literally could not exist without lower class labor. its mentioned, for example, that the wife could not keep up with housework and they would be in trouble if they couldnt find a housekeeper/maid fast. their existence is entirely dependent on the work of the lowerclass citizens they ignore/look down on, just as much as the kim family needed to be employed to make money
It's more of the fact that they benefit on the backs of the Kim's emotional and physical labour. They're so separated from actual sadness of poor people but for them to live their extremely wealthy lifestyle, they have to depend on so many lives and resources and so in that way, they're parasites too in some way.
Again, I assume that the concept of the "smell" is actually not even a thing. Mr Park assumes that because the people work for him, they have a certain standard 'line' as he says, which they shouldn't cross. I don't think they actually smelled or were unclean, but Mr Parks assumes this because he knows that Mr Kim is poor, and the Parks would rather just ignore and shield themselves from the sadness and reality of poor people.

It left me with the question, that who were actually the parasites? Who used whom? Who exploited and manipulated whom? And many more of such questions, a much needed film considering the current neo liberal economic and social structure and scenario

I'd like to say though, in the elevation is a running theme in the movie, the Kim's live below the level of the toilet, maybe the same level of the sewer, the tons and tons of shit, pee, rodent, roaches and all bad things maybe even below that. That's shown by the zemi-basement toilet that's on an elevated platform.
Meanwhile, the bunker is on the same level of the toilet. And also quite a bit distant from it separated by the narrow way.

The moral of the story is that wealth does not matter but family does. As long as you have the latter but not the former you can be happy, if the reverse you will not be happy. And that you should avoid sin because it will lead to your downfall.
Lust: relationship between the boy and his student makes him suffer delusions of grandeur. Greed: their obsessions with exploiting the family by replacing all their servants and their desire to obtain the mansion itself. Gluttony: eating all the food and drinking all the alcohol, that is not theirs, while the family is away. And their unwillingness to share the families wealth with the former made and her husband. Pride: thinking they are above criticism and negative comments even thought they are harsh truths. Wrath: wanting to inflict violence upon others for disrespect. Sloth does not apply as they do work and help the family with what they're hired for.
I've heard good things about this movie, but it's kind of hard to watch because I don't a lot of subtitles while watching a movie

(1) under the preferential ballot system and there being Nine nominees a film can win even if it doesn’t have the most Number 1 votes.
(2) Many voters were embarrassed that GREEN BOOK beat ROMA the previous year.

While I like Parasite, it would not have been my pick to win Best Picture. Of the films nominated, The Irishman was my favorite choice. I loved the story and enjoyed the character interactions the film had. I also love the works of Scorsese, which a lot of people do, so I’ll admit there’s bias on my part. Parasite just didn’t do a lot for me when I saw it. Maybe the hype was a little too big for me, but I thought the film was just alright. Nothing against Foreign Films, Akira Kurosawa was one of the best filmmakers of all time, but I think there were other foreign films more deserving of best picture in the past. Be it a Kurosawa film, Fellini film, Bergman film or any other fantastic film made by another incredible filmmaker. I’ve only seen Snowpiercer before Parasite, so I don’t know too much about Bong’s filmography, but I wasn’t blown away like so many other people were about Parasite. This is a good video though, and while I wish another film was up for a lot of awards instead of being shut out except for one Oscar, everyone’s thoughts on what should have won or should have been up for Best Picture will always be different.
You should watch once more and more.. each time you watch it again you will appreciate more about the film. It has so many layer and substance to discover. It totally deserves Oscar best picture.
Nebbialuna Bella I’ve watched it a few times already. Still don’t think it deserved it. Just my opinion of course. It’s a good film, but I just wasn’t blown away by it like so many people were. Again, that’s me, but if you enjoy it and think it deserved Best Picture then that’s great.
The Motion pictures academy felt/looked bad for not giving awards to so many great Korean movies like Burning, Chaser, Yellow Sea (Oldboy ffs) so they gave all of it to Parasite

1917 should have won best director. It embodied what a "picture" is. There's scenes in that movie that had me in aw and nothing was being said by characters, just moving pictures.. Parasite had a more original story and writing. But 1917 was directed better..
The only thing 1917 was good for is the cinematography. Direction was horrible when you take off the cinematography. If you actually know anything about WWI and just war in general you’d be astonished at the lack of respect for the subject and the lack of research.
Basically all 1917 had over Parasite was the cinematography was better. mise en scène is what makes a film good, Parasite had like 4/5 of what mise en scène is. 1917 maybe had 2.

Hmm, I can't say I really "got" the movie, it was a competently directed, acted and written movie for sure, but at the same time I wasn't really sure why it got so many awards. The ending kinda just happens, foreshadowed? Maybe, but it all felt kinda sudden.
And that kid should have died for having that fking rock throw on his goddamn head twice, there is no way Ki-jun can die from a shoulder stab due to blood loss and Ki-woon who had no help for a decent bit of time AND was double tapped can survive, I call immense bullshit even if the rock was hollow.
Apparently they are using the shooting locations as tourists spots... Its just so tone deaf.
