There's a lot going into that "beef cutting" scene...one you might miss as a non-korean viewer is that the beef used in the scene is "Hanwoo" or the most expensive grade of beef in Korea, similar to Wagyu. Many can't afford Hanwoo, let alone eat it as a snack with instant noodles...it's like caviar on a big mac...this is yet another shade of the rich vs poor...

Thank you for that cool little piece of information! Any more insights for foreigners?
I really liked the movie, as I do many other South-Korean movies, but I'm always a little bit sad that, while I get the basic plot and themes, small details and subtleties might get "lost in translation" viewing it as an European with limited knowledge on Korean culture. Sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to be laughing at a certain scene, maybe a native Korean would be giggling at something completely different, something I would not get. I definitely picked up a lot of dark humour in this one, though.

1.In korean society, high education level is regarded very very important.
When son of poor family manipulates the document, you can see a blue mark in that scene and all koreans know about that mark as university that's one of the top3 elite level univs in korea.Yonsei Univ.
For more info other two are Seoul National Univ and Korea Univ.
We call that three universities as SKY .
And so when daughter explains herself as Illinois graduate, that makes her seen as a person from another level.
2.there's a difference of nuance between semi-basement and actual basement.Semi-basement is like you live in some kind of basement, but you always can see what's going on outside world and always having some kind of ambition to go high.So i think Bong has made an implcation of class gap even between 2nd and 3rd family.that's genius i think.
Because of my not influent English it's hard to explain but i did my best tho. Watch it many times^^

I believe 90% of society will root for the Kims because they relate to their motivations and lifestyle more than the one of the Parks, we all want to believe that bad behavior is justified when people have “Motives” e.g. when someone kills their daughter murderer, but it isn’t.
Society is unfair here and in China but that’s not an Excuse for doing all of the above, the poor dad must go to prison because he committed murder regardless of his social class and that rational explanation is why I root for the Parks, even if I liked the Kims more.

Yet, one of the biggest tragedies of this whole situation is that there was a a moment when all three families could've coexisted nicely. With Kevin, Jessica and the dad working there, they would've made a lot money. Koreans shell out major cash for any sort of academic tutoring. I know of doctors wives working as maids to pay for their kids tutors. So at this point, the Parks would've been blissfully and ignorantly pleased. The Kims would've been able to "move up", and the original maid would've been happily secretly taking care of her husband. Kind of like the symbiotic nature of our world...

dalimassite yes, I agree. If they hadn’t been so absorbed in their greed, everything would have been different. But i must say, they were dirt poor before, so of course when they saw a chance like that, they had to grasp that, and furthermore they didn’t know that the old housekeeper was in dire need of her position. Although if any of them has some plan ahead, they wouldn’t have immersed themselves into their fake rich life and save up to invest in their future, especially when the son has a relationship going strongly with the Park’s daughter. Many potentials are missed because of greed and inferiority complex.

its truly inspiring to see how Parasite has achieved worldwide fame when the entirety consists of Korean inside jokes. Bong Jun Ho is notorious for his intense focus on details and i believe that Parasite is the perfect example, even though a lot of reviewers and commenters each contributed their own take to the film and have caught on to the major differences in behavior, the list still goes on and on, like how at the beginning Ki-Jung, the daughter, suggests typing in '12345678'for the wifi code to how the parasite family changes from drinking cheap Korean beer to a more high-end brand of Japanese craft sake to celebrate, or like how the melody of the now-popular "Jessica jingle" is the fun rhythm of one of Korea's most popular golden oldie. Not to mention how the director caught the mannerisms and overall atmosphere of the modern-day Korean upper and lower class to a tee! I wasnt intending to sound so nationalistic, but Im just really proud that a film whose main target audience wasnt on an international scale managed to spark such a huge phenomenon.

Most popular stuff in any culture is formulaic. People like dependability and predictability when the current state is pretty chaotic and unstable. There's also a constant fear in S. Korea that any minute you can be nuked by your northern neighbors, betrayed by your eastern neighbors (who've been at it for a century). Not to mention the neighbors to the west. Considering all this, it's not ironic that formulaic predictable rom-coms are popular.

It was the Kim's ego that got hurt, thats why Mrs.Kim rejected doing that and threatening to call the police even though Mrs Kim hade done something way worse than the caretaker. After earning money the Kims had become egoistic b*tches and Mrs. Kim was the first person to kill someone in the film by pushing the caretaker down the stairs. The film itself is a huge metaphorical cloud that just hangs over your head. As a Korean-American, I noticed many Korean-esque behaviors, the language, the culture, etc. However, even if you don't know the language and culture, there's a juxtaposition between the wealth disparity of rich/poor, compared to Korea and here in the West. But this film just had the very heavy Korean flavor. I only watched the film once and do plan to watch it again to see if I catch anything more.
From the "hanwoo" (Korea's very expensive meat) beef scene, to the "38th parallel" (South Korea's border with North Korea") quote, there's so many other things that really make you think. Of how the father always keeps the windows open, which can be translated to his mindset and financially poor lifestyle. "Free extermination" and open windows led down to the flooding scene. And in the flooding scene in which they escape, the film captures them going down the stairs. From the high riches and height of the wealthy, they walk down in sewer infested waters to only spend a night in the gymnasium.
I also love how you mentioned that this movie is "realistic" and "can happen." My dad watched the movie and firmly believed that this can actually happen.
Korean films in general pretty much almost always ends in tragedy and gives me the big sad. And perhaps that's because of the current status quo in Korea and it's just part of Korean entertainment. However, beyond that, Bong Joon Ho is a genius. This film is absolutely phenomenal and has made me extremely uncomfortable. And I love it when a film does that with critical precision. This movie has wanted to make me scream. Also, I do think that the stinkbug in the beginning of the film means something, but I'll have to watch it again to reconfirm it. Great video, you earned yourself a subscriber.

SOME POINTS ONLY NOTICED BY KOREANS
The Korean title of Parasite (기생충) is Ki Seng Chung. The poor family son, daughter and father's names are Ki Woo, Ki Jung and Ki Taek. Part of their names have part of the word Parasite in it. I think there was a conscious effort because you never have father and son/daughter have the same middle name. It's just not done.
The black noodle dish in the movie called RamDon (made up name for translation-actual called Champagetti) is a combination of $.60 popular instant noodle and the most expensive Wagyu beef of Korea. This is a combination of extreme ingredients. There must me a metaphor there.
The poor dad being coached how to act by the poor son was an inside joke for Koreans. Kang-Ho Song (dad) is the Tom Hanks of Korea. Choi Woo-shik is just an up and coming actor.

All of us thought that this is an amazing film, it’s entertaining and sparks very interesting conversations. Even more interesting: each of us took something different out of it with different scenes that stood out. Even better: the more I read and watch about it, the more I realize how many levels this film has, how deep it goes and the observations it does. IMO it’s a masterpiece and I really think that, even if you don’t want to think about our society or how the world works to much, you’ll have a great time watching it.

I was more engrossed with DOGMAN simply because you're with the main character the entire movie, and it really gives you his perspective, and I could fixate on his journey so completely, unfettered by other actors or flashy editing. What are people's thoughts on the use of food in this film, throughout the overarching story line?
I find that the stylistic choices of Bong Joon-ho are shown in these elements, how he decisively placed them, i.e. the color and vibrancy, and "clean" well, put together items of food that really focus on the divide of class and wealth. As well, how truly integral food is for survival and how much these issues drive a person or change someone's mindset in order to survive or have a decent life.
The design elements collectively speak to this.
I thought it was intriguing that he put such a strong focus on food, something that is a basic need, & the idea of having it, but having it well, what that means socially when you are poor or have struggled to live.
On a separate, yet unnecessary note, I find it interesting that so many people immediately assume that because someone is poor, that it means they are lazy, when there are plenty of reasons for one being poor that has nothing to do with work ethic. For instance, health and/or education, where you're born, what you're born into. That's not to say rich people don't earn their living, because most of them do, but that's not always the case, just as much as it isn't always someone's fault they are poor.

Found this good analysis comment on another review, jung's comment -
"I think the biggest function of this film is in highlighting the rather innocent ignorance by the rich towards the poor. The wealthy family is portrayed as very polite, and reasonable people who are not particularly arrogant or malicious. But they are clueless about the lives of the people that they employ around the house and accidentally offend them by reacting to the driver's smell instinctively. The poor admires the rich and gets to know so much about them and almost convinces themselves that their lives are practically the same as that of their employers only to face the rude awakening later. The film title Parasite is also not a flattering way of describing the less fortunate members of the society, and this juxtaposition of portraying the rich as innocent and poor and conniving and somewhat cruel makes this film so unique of movie that speaks to capitalism. Perhaps there are call outs for both extremes, the wealthy to raise their level of awareness regarding the poor and the poor to not obsess over the glamorous neighbors..."

    • @KK-pm7ud
      @KK-pm7ud 4 роки тому +2

I'm confused how this comment describes the privileged viewpoint at all. At no point in the film does the privileged family care about those that serve them. Any action that seems to suggest otherwise is just one that is intended to fulfill the needs of the privileged class. (The love affair that the young girl has with her tutor is one example of this. The respect that the mother shows for her son's tutor is another. It stems from her desire to be a good mother and her fear of failing him. She wants him to be both a happy child and have a successful career / life to continue their social standing.) The privileged family's actions clearly signal to the servants that there is always a barrier between them and their employers. It's not innocence. It is willful ignorance. They are worlds apart; and by design. While the rich family never goes out of their way to be unkind, they always find ways to make it clear that there are boundaries between them. Maintaining the distance of the employer / employee relationship. Reminding them that they are workers and that they are never to cross that line. The reaction to the smell of their servants was not accidental. It was entirely intentional. While they did not want to tell the driver about his smell to his face, they were concerned about how his smell would reflect upon them. (For example, if they decided to bring a friend into the car when the driver was there as well. How would it reflect on them if their driver smelled odd?) Just like when the previous driver was 'caught' with panties in the car. They did not want to communicate the reason why they were letting him go. They just wanted him gone because having a 'pervert' driving their car would not reflect well on their family or their status in the community. While there is A LOT more that could be unpacked in the film, I do think that the film's intention was never to make a judgement call on what is bad nor good behavior. What is right or wrong about class and wealth inequality. The film attempts to place these two families (among others) in situations that explore some themes related to class in modern society. It even examines dynamics amongst others within a certain level of class (e.g.- the maid, the pizza box company, the drunk man on the street, etc.) to let the audience reflect upon the human condition and, perhaps, the unfairness of fairness.

They didn’t care about them. The kims didn’t care about the housekeeper and her husband and vice verse. Everyone’s living from their own perspective in life and seen through the eyes of each story, none are really right or wrong.

This movie is kind of a Parasite.
Here's a movie that should have been nominated and should have won the Oscar:
    " The Laundromat "
It's a movie, which feels like a really likable informational video about insurance fraud and tricky money schemes... Lol... Antonio Banderas and Gary Oldman are just so much fun to watch!!! It's a delightful film! Based on a true story, as well, about the Panama Papers.
For me, this beats other movies nominated for movie awards. It's an artwork, turning a boring subject into pure fun, with a unique way to tell a story and make a point as well. The characters have their ups and downs, as well. It's a Steven Soderbergh project (I had thought he retired, so glad he didn't!) and his style lifts the story and turns it into an enjoyable ride that you want to be on.
Okay, I have nothing against "Parasite", but with all the English speaking great movies this year, why did this win so much at the Oscars? It had good directing, great acting, great score, interesting locations and good camera work -- but, I just didn't really believe the story that much. It seemed that the upper class folks were too naive, and the lower class folks were too lucky. Plus, what were the lower class family going to do once they were found out? After all, it was just a matter of time, right? The father of that family seemed to have a higher endurance, in my understanding of the character, but then he goes nuts because he finds out the upper class boss of his isn't fond of his 'smell'? Seriously? This just seems silly to me. I thought he was more humble, and with more grit than to let something like that bother him. Is it realistic that the upper class in South Korea don't check on anyone that they hire? Seems unrealistic to me. So, I really wanted the movie to succeed (for me) by having the characters strike a deal with each other, or reconcile and make an agreement of some kind that brings The 'human experience' to a higher level. But, instead, we got madness, chaos and murder. Wtf? I felt this was a complete cop-out. I'm guessing that this movie may have a more relevant sense to it, culturally, for those from South Korea or living there. Because it may be drawing from a reality, there, that could be worth evaluating more deeply. I thought this was an average movie, because of the story. 5 out of 10. Snowpiercer was more interesting, and better, from this Director.

I'll point out 2 stupid moments that stood out in the movie, 1st the scene were instead of working together so they can keep each others secrets, the old caretaker would rather have a fight 2 against 4. 2nd the father watched his daughter gets stabbed and his wife fighting for her life and he just stood there doing nothing. parasite is a very well written movie It talks about power, greed and hope,it says that how humans are capitalist by nature, That a person only thinks about himself that when a poor family has power, they will not help other poor but will only think about themselves, There is a power hierarchy in the society and the one who has more power, he considers the one with less power as a filth. This film talk about privilege also that a higher class person gets everything but a lower class person has to work 10 times more to get that, Everything in this film was well balanced there is no villain in this film the real villain is the situation
Yes bong didn't give any reason for "all or nothing" but that's the whole point that's why it feels surprising,The murder of Mar Park by Mar kim was a very psychological act,The murder of Mar Park by Mar Kim is very surprising and to understand it, you need to understand the psychology of Mar Kim.
Kim never wanted to kill Park, it was the situation that led to this act,Jealousy and anger have already boiled over in Kim's mind against Park,And it's shown in a very subtle way,He used to respect the park a lot, but later he came to know that he just thinks of him as a worker who stinks alot This thing was deeply disturbing to Kim inside,A big truth was already revealed in front of Kim(secret bunker),And right after that he heard Mr. Park say about himself that he stinks, and later her whole house got washed away by the rain all trouble came upon him in one night Still, he has to go to work in the morning, where the Park family is about to enjoy a birthday party But still the park treats him like a worker wo stinks they are completely unaware of his problem,Even when geun se killed Kim's daughter, Park was only thinking about his son and he should logically think about his son first But Kim felt bad for this work of Park because of his hatred, when Park shrunk his nose to avoid the smell, then Kim felt worse,in that situation, his suppressed hatred and jealousy came out in the form of anger, which led to the murder of the park. Kim had no Big reason to kill Park and he never want to kill mr Park it just happened to him like a DREAM a BAD DREAM And he got punished for this because he did wrong he had to leave his family and stay in the bunker and later he also apologized to the park, but now nothing is going to happen with this apology, crime was already committed now he will have to atone for it ,this shows the jealousy and hatred of the lower class against the higher class, And the movie never justifies Kim's crime,Kim was not a psycho killer, he was a normal person, he committed this crime, which he regrets, but now nothing is going to happen by regretting,In the last, a conversation between a father and son is shown which is very emotional, a son will never consider his father a criminal He also knows that my father is not such a person, but nothing can happen now,In the end, the film ends on Hope, despite all this, ki woo never stops hoping,I don't know whether he will be able to get that house or not, but God bless him to buy such a house so that when it rains next time, he can enjoy it with his family like mr park does.
Both families were not parasite in this film the real parasite was human greed, hatred, jealousy and situation

    SPOILER:
I liked this movie, it’s really good. That being said. One of the protagonists, Ki-taek, a poor man beaten down by life, gradually turns angrier and angrier, more frustrated and clearly unsettled as the story progresses. It all leads to a third act that is basically a bloodbath, where Ki-taek ends up stabbing to death a man from a much higher social class, that represents everything that Ki-taek is not and that he wishes to be, a man that has also repeatedly mocked and shown disdain towards Ki-taek throughout the movie… sounds familiar? So as long as the perpetrator of the violence is not a white male with issues critics will hail it as a masterpiece, right? This pathetically hipocritical culture that has permiated even the way we “review” movies is really, really sad. Thank god apparently audiences aren’t getting dumber or as narrow minded the way critics are.
