I’m a guitarist who knows very little about synths but come here for your lovely playing which I could listen to all day. The references to everything from the Beatles and Georgio Moroder, to Erik Satie, all with appropriate patches, are the work of a truly masterful musician.
All synth manufacturers should pay you (handsomely) to demo their synths. Your playing could sell a Roland synth to a Korg representative. Excellent video as always!
I have 100% confidence that this synth will not sound like this when I’m sat in front of it, but I ordered it anyway. Thanks for the inspiration to reach a higher level, Matt.
ghost mall same boat man. I just bought the p10 desktop and an OB6 keyboard version. I haven’t a clue how to actually play them. I can make music, but I don’t actually know how to play for the level of money I am spending on these. Yet, I still do it, chasing that sound or just knowing I have some of the best synths in existence so if I am ever gonna figure out how to play. I’ll have the best sounds! Lol
I think I've watched all the P10, OB6, P6 videos on UA-cam, but Your videos I can watch over and over again. Your humility, talent and passion for music mixed with the kind smile you have when you talk it's just calming and soothing in these crazy days. It's just so easy to watch the content you make. So I'll keep on watching them, and keep on dreaming of these great sounding instruments...😌
I'd like a full Prophet 10 Gymnopédie, that little snippet was so pretty. Thanks for doing these demos, covering a lot of nice styles and the range of sounds a synth's capable of musically.
Matt, impeccable video AND playing, as usual, that Lyle Mays patch around 10:30 mark, if I didn’t know any better I’d have thought it was Lyle Himes the way that you emulated his style! You’ve superbly showcased the REAL treasure that is the P5/10, with their MONO outputs, the true beauty is when the Prophets are integrated with other synths, that’s when the magic truly begins!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, that was funny! Although I did immediately wonder if the P600 pan mod kit idea could be applied to the modern Prophet 5/10 to get that stereo spread of the oscillators. I have it for my Prophet 600 and it's worth its weight in gold.
Just got my P5 and WOW! Amazing quality and sound! The most excited I’ve been in a long time!! 2020 has been a horrible year up until now! Thank you Steve at Robot Speak and thank you Matt for the amazing uploads. And of course, a huge thank you to the legend Dave Smith!
The way how shitty the world is today in so many respects, still, sometimes it's easy to take for granted how much of a priviledge it is to be able to be on here listening to an amazing synth and an amazing player, from the comfort of one's house. Thank you!
They've done a few decent emulations of these types of synths, like Messiah from MemoryMoon. I like it but the envelopes are snappy enough to play with a wind controller. I go more for the ARP, Korg, and Oberheim type sounds...there's a nice creaminess to those filters. I got my DW8000 because they have a similar vibe where they can sound dark and creamy.
Love it!! and also love that UDO Super 6........ I'm watching that video next! AND...... can I also take moment to THANK YOU YAMAHA! for giving Dave Smith his Sequential name back!! This kind of thing just doesn't often happen in the big corporate "grab all you can" world, and I love the fact that my Prophet-6 says Sequential on it. It makes me like Yamaha just a bit more.
Yamaha really is a likeable company, they also helped Korg through some hard years. I’m glad that there is such a thing as friendly competition and putting musicians interest in the center.
I'm glad you're starting to get some traction on your channel Matt. I've been a subscriber since early doors (go me) and your output has always been quality! Keep on doing what you do.
Matt, be thankful you snagged this edition of the Prophet 5/10 Rev 4 when you did. it was never meant for commoners like myself. Now that Dave Smith has passed away, even professional musicians like you won’t be able to get their hands on one remotely so easily. If I could afford even the tabletop module, that would be the edition I would choose. Since I was in my early 20s, the only Sequential Circuits model that has ever really spoken to me has been the Prophet T8. Having the tabletop version of this model and any keyboard controller with aftertouch would be the next best thing. You make note of how the output is just a single mono output. I forget if you’ve had the Oberheim Matrix 1000. I’ve got one of those, and it only has one output itself.
Time Masters 1982 ... a french movie with what i perceive to be a lot of "prophet vibes". An amazing movie, watched it over and over... vibes through the roof.
Sounds splendid ! Whatever jewel you present, there needs to be some complementary Montage with it. It clearly shows how versatile the Montage is, in combination with a proper analogue synth. Like shown in your video with the Andromeda. All your demos sound so great!
So stoked that you have this to show off for us! Always love seeing your videos on synthesizers because they give a real sense of what they’re like being played, rather than just a “demo” of the instrument. I have a Rev2 myself, and every time I see one your videos with a prophet in it I find myself running off to the studio with fresh inspiration!
Congratulations Matt, there is nothing more comforting than being able to fulfill the dreams of youth, with the effort that this implies. Thank you for sharing them with us and the tremendous editing work that goes into it.
You records were always a centerpiece for us around 1990:ish.. and today I get to see you share all this in such a personal way. What an age to live in! Love it.
Superb content as ever , well done Matt truly a great recreation from a bygone age! No longer can we say “they don’t make them like that anymore” , true inspiration...
Finally someone says it, "it takes a lot of balls to sell a synth for 4 grand that's got one mono output." I wrestled with this notion for a while and now have to agree that I too applaud this decision. Not going to be everyone's bag, but 1) I also have a P6 and 2) spending the money on the Rev 4 versus an original gets you a damn near identical (and more reliable) unit.
blows that prophet 6 out of the place - eeeeeasily - you are a funk master and i have to be straight - hearing you play that pro6 i was like noooo you have to have a pro5 - good to see
Of course you had to have one! 😁 I love my OB6 module which I’ve just started using. Your demo of this helped me buy it and I’ve no regrets. I always look forward to your videos. They’re a real treat! 💜
It just sounds great. Bags of character, massive sound. Love it. The patches with the envelopes on the resonant filter sounds like you're watching the night sky and there's falling stars with each note. Just brilliant.
Stunning demo! Starting with that Club Autonomic vibe.. simply incredible, and the entire demo from there's a pure masterclass. Thank you for that Matt! I could truthfully listen to this all day long.
Nice! I knew you would have one. Sold a Polysix and Prodigy for the UDO and P5. Glad to hear them together! Lovely playing as always! Also enjoying the other youtube channel with full songs.
When Dave Smith announced thi s thing - seems like just days ago - one of my first thoughts was "wonder when Matt Johnson is going to do a vid on this".

Wonderful patches and playing, Matt! The new P10 sounds very organic and alive in your hands. Thanks as well for your comments comparing to your P6. I'm thrilled Sequential made the new P5 and 10 rev 4, but I also think the OB-6 and P-6 are still great synths.
I've got a Prophet 10 incoming, was also wary of the vintage P5's even though I've owned a ton of (cheaper) vintage. Had P6 and OB-6 too but they've gone. The Prophet 10 in sound, looks, feel and polyphony is what I've been wanting for decades! :)
Update... now had mine a couple of weeks, it’s awesome and sounds even better than any YT videos and much nicer than my prophet 6 sounded. Very glad I went for the Prophet 10 as it feels perfect, poly unison is more useful with it and round robin mode in updated fw also feels great with the 10 voice. I play big chords so the five was never an option anyway.
An aural massage. Amazing sounding machine. Maybe when the robots take over it wont be them trying to kill us with laser canons but pacifying us with incredible electronic music. Imagine giant walking Prophet 10's blasting out music
Prophet 6 owner here. I’ve been umming and ahing about the 10, trying to talk myself out of it. Saying things to myself like “most listeners won’t notice the difference” and “maybe I should try turning the oscillators down on my 6 and use the poly mod to shape the contour shape on the filter”, but, after seeing this thing played so tastefully I think you’ve proven that they are really quite different and worth having in the studio. One question, for anyone who might know, how do the envelopes compare to the 6? I love my 6 but I wish there were a way to shape the envelopes more like the classic Roland synths
hehe it's always like this, I'm not a musician at all (can barely play some chords and little solos on a guitar) but for any tools, games and such, it always follows the same lenghty sequence: I want this! -> sees bank account and price: nope, don't want anymore -> tries to justify not wanting it at all -> sees that actually wants it "a little" -> checks prices again -> "yeah that would be nice... maybe later" -> wants it badly again -> tries to make bank account and price meet -> get it regardless. -> No regrets. This thing does sound amazing, as an electronics enthusiast (making my own circuits and all) being all analog makes it an amazing piece of engineering art.
I've been watching your videos all year, and I just got the idea in my head that it would be the coolest if you could be keyboard player on a Daft Punk track. I don't know what about the Prophet 10 brought that sound out of you, but it just did. Very cool.
Roland seems to be to sole manufacturer utterly incapable of reading the room. Everyone else is re-releasing classic gear because folks are buying it. The boutique and cloud are never going to give a person the satisfaction of having a full size Jupiter or Juno in their grubby little fingers. I completely ignored the whole boutique line with the exception of the D-05 since its guts existed entirely in the digital world anyway.
@@entropybentwhistle Totally with you on that. I partly understand Roland's desire to keep moving forward but, if they were really committed to moving forward, they wouldn't continue to recycle their entire back catalogue of sounds and actually invent something really new. A sound we've never heard before. If they can't invent a new synthesis format, why not build re-issues at a premium price?
@@spazkong What’s goofy is that they’re a musical instrument manufacturer, not an avant garde art studio. Who cares if they re-tread old ground? They would be making a LOT of musicians happy instead of constantly having to defend themselves from critics who accurately point out their 26th annual season of 2nd tier gear.
@@entropybentwhistle I would never spend £5000 on a Mini Moog as I couldn't justify that much on a mono synth. I did buy a Behringer Poly D and I have to say, If they did a Jupiter 8 clone, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I have no issues with the quality on my 3 items of Behringer analogue gear. One can always put a funny sticker over the logo if embarrassed!
@@spazkong As far as looking forward, Modal seems to be doing that quite well at the moment. There’s others, like Nonlinear Lab’s C-15 or Bengler and Martin’s Collidoscope which are very innovative, but seemed too esoteric to catch on market-wise.
The Prophet 5 is not just a synth, it’s a instrument by itself with it’s own soul like a Piano or Violin.
What 99% of synth demos/reviews lack is a talented musician playing - you brilliantly show us what these instruments are capable of.
What. Not really
