Sad Buck Rogers just vanished from pop culture by the mid 80s. Prior to that, it had been part of sci-fi culture in various ways since the 1920s. I imagine a large part of that was it seeming very similar to Star Wars, itself likely partly inspired by Buck Rogers (before the TV show, which came out after the first Star Wars). Even though it predated Star Wars by 50 years (via short stories, comics, etc.), a lot of the public may just think of it as being some cheesy Star Wars rip-off.
@@AR15andGOD George Lucas said himself that SW was inspired by the old Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials from the 20’s and 30’s. Ironic that this version of Buck Rogers was partly inspired by the movie that was inspired by the original Buck Rogers. Lol
The trailer's narrator made a mistake when he said Cape Kennedy, it stopped being called that in 1973 when it reverted to its' previous name, Cape Canaveral.
As with any Sci-Fi movie it's all about alternative universe that doesn't necessarily talk about our current reality. So ya it should have said Cape Canaveral but it's what it is. Plus a side note the "compact startship" is actually the original shuttle in an episode of Battlestar Galatica and later repurposed for this show. I didn't know this till I saw it in my FB newsfeed.
@@maggiemae7539 No, it was always Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. The original Phillip Nowlan story was titled "Armageddon 2419. AD", published in 1928, with the newspaper strip, title Buck rogers in the 25th century AD, following, in 1929. A radio series followed in 1932 and the movie serial in 1939. This movie and the NBC tv series always carried the title Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
If they do a modern remake he needs to spend a portion of the time on Earth in the current era. Showing so little of that would be like starting ROBOCOP with him being rebuilt into a cyborg instead of what they did do which was have him as a person for nearly the first half hour of the movie. I think it would be cool to maybe show him on tv being interviewed and when the reporter addresses him as Mr. William Rogers have him smile and say "Buck" my friends just call me "buck" and then the reporter says ok, Buck Rogers then starts asking questions about his upcoming space mission.
Done right, it has a lot of potential. I even really like this trailer. They need to stick to the original. And yeah I agree they should do some good character development. Who knows maybe sometime in the future it will be remade.
@@mando074 As corny, silly and flawed as the show was one thing that was COOL about it was that he was from a literary standpoint almost like Batman in that he was a DARK HERO. He was a larger than life combination of super hero and astronaut and a total badass having swashbuckling save the day and save the world adventures but he was also a very sad and lonely man who had suffered great loss and trauma and his sadness and depression showed at times. That DUALITY was interesting. The show was NOT perfectly happy. It had an element of TRAGEDY to it. It was actually kind of a SAD STORY with "A Dream of Jennifer" maybe the saddest (Hawk losing his wife was sad too but I mean sad for Buck himself). And visiting his own parent's graves at a grave yard was pretty raw too. That scene would have been even better if he were to visit HIS OWN GRAVE. When a person is declared legally dead and there is no body they still put up a token grave stone for the mourners to see.
@@Zurround all of that sounds really cool. I was a kid when this came out and so only remember a few episodes and finding re-runs was hard back then. @@mando074 The 1980 movie version of Flash Gordon was so bad that it was good, almost as campy as the Adam West version of Batman. It would be interesting to see a modern take on it. Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy felt to me a lot like what a modern version of Buck Rogers could be like. He was not exactly the same kind of character but surprisingly similar. A modern take on the character could have worlds and environments and alien beings not possible for a tv show filmed in the late 1970s with a limited budget.
@@Zurround many years later I saw parts of the Flash Gordon movie on TV and I agree it was terrible. Like it should have been on MST3K. Back to Buck, yeah if done carefully it could be great. Gilbert Gerard. He was handsome in his youth but sadly did not age well, started looking terrible about 10 years after the show filmed its final episode.
Saw this in the theater, before the debut of the tv series. I prefer the movie edit to the tv version of the pilot film and wish they had continued it as a series of mini-series (2-part stories) as they did originally (and as Larson's other sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica, had begun), rather than the weekly series. the early mini-series versions were better stories, though I enjoyed most of the first season. The retooled second season, not so much. They went cheap and the writing was bad and cast changes didn't help. Wilma was demoted to a glorified space stewardess (sexy uniform, though).
Should have kept the original format of the show.Bringing in Hawk was great, then Buck & Hawk would've been an excellent tv duo for at least 3 years.without changing anything on the show.

In the first episode they held Buck prisoner without legal representation. And then Dr. Theopolis and that ridiculous robot set Buck up, helping him scape the city. Almost got him executed. Wilma Dearing lost almost her entire squadron while fighting Draconian “pirates” and barely even reacted to the deaths of those pilots. Same with Buck. Like “Oh well. We have plenty of pilots.” Also, did Wilma train those pilots? Because they really sucked! Lol. There was a lot more but I don’t wanna nitpick . . .
Interesting that he is not only able to operate a 25th century star fighter but to boot is the BEST at it right off the bat. Yes he was an elite astronaut OVER FIVE CENTURIES EARLIER. What's next? A world War 1 flying ace will immediately be a pro at controlling the F35?

I graduated high school in 1987. In the Buck Rogers canon, that's the year when World War III begun.
so was 1984
One of my favorite TV shows.
I purchased the whole series(2 seasons) years ago! Wonderful guest stars in every episode!

The fact that the musician figured out Rock in about 20 seconds.
