    Hi Barbara(and Gary),
Thank you for the kind comments.
When I'm on holiday my father or father in law does the weekends & an employee of mine who keeps angora goats (lakeland angoras) will kindly feed & water them before work as he is up & about early seeing to his goats.
Obviously if you have less doves, normal feeders & water providers would last many days.
Got my eye on another dumpy feather legs for you!

These are extraordinarily beautiful! I wish I could purchase one but it’s difficult to find fantails like this in the US. What type of fantail is this? Indian, American or English? Do you know of any breeders of this variety in the states?

      Hi, Thanks.
In some countries they are called pigeons, rather than doves. I'm sure you must be able to get them in America. Sorry, as I'm in England I have no clue where you could get some from.

      Hi,
I just keep the traditional white fantails. Some are slightly creasted, some have slightly feathered feet.
I don't mind these slight variations, but tbh I don't like the extreme of the fancy show varieties.
I keep my doves pure white.

Hi amazing collection of birds and great vid thanks!
I have just brought a dovecote for up to 12 pairs. And i will get exclusively fantails.
    Please can you advise
    1. How many pairs should i start off with?
    2. Is a 8-10week homing net period okay and when i remove the net will they come back to the dovecote?
    3. Once the dovecote is filled with the babies, will the next set of dovecotes fly off anywhere or will they nest in a tree local to the dovecote?
    4. The dovecote is ontop of a 3m tree stump, can the fantails fly this high?
    Thank you

    • @fantaildoveman9757
      @fantaildoveman9757  Рік тому +2

      Hello Adam,
The minimum number of doves to start off with is usually 6. You probably won't be able to get established breeding pairs, but after around 4 months they will start to pair up themselves. So just buy 6 plus doves. 8 weeks is ample for fantails. Fantails home much better than garden/straight tail doves. I've homed some fantails in 2 days!
Any new born doves in your cote, will automatically class it as there home. If they feel safe around/in your cote, & you provide food, water grit & a bath, all your doves will be more than happy to stay as you are providing everything they need.
Some doves will roost in the cote pop holes, some on the outside of the cote, some in nearby trees, etc. If you are in the UK, then sparrowhawks are a doves biggest threat, so they need to feel safe from them where they roost.
Fantails can fly as high as any other bird, it's just they are very lazy and prefer to stay very local.
I'd recommend you buy practical dove keeping by roadrunner. Although some is more aimed at Garden/straight tailed doves, it is a fantastic book for beginners.
      Regards.

@@fantaildoveman9757 do you think there would be anything wrong with me starting off with 12 fantails? The breeder said she will try and sex them so i can try and take 6 males and 6 females.
If the ratio is wrong and there are more males to females could this cause a problem?
      Thanks

@@adammustafa7399 No problem with 12. It's best to have more, then if you lose 1 or 2 it isn't a problem. There will be no problem if you have odd male or female numbers.

      Hi,
When the door is shut, so I can lock them in, they have access to a large aviary at the back that they can fly and perch in. I let them out daily (weather permitting) when I'm in the house. Luckily I've had no problems with cats when they are out. Sparrowhawks are the main problem as I'm fairly rural and the reason I moved to a loft aviary setup from a traditional cote on a pole.
I do keep an eye on them when they are out.
Some people in the UK have that many problems with hawks they have to give up the hobby.

@@maxmccart3179 The same as keeping any pet tbh. My wife is alergic to all pet hair & I''ve always wanted fantails.
I like spending time in my garden & when I'm not in it, looking out onto it. My garden would seem empty & lifeless without my doves & my customers tend to agree. It takes me a couple of hours a week to look after them, so why not keep them?
Once you get to know their personalities, it's a bit like a soap opera watching their lives. Love, love lost, birth, death & intrigue. It all happens in Dove life.
