Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated guitarists to ever tune up. I saw REO six times in this era and they never disappointed. They were always just that good. I think you might have reacted to the studio version of Golden Country, but in the live version on this live album, Gary just goes right off. I always said he was toying with that Les Paul like a cat toys with a mouse.
Gary Richrath never got his just due. Just a phenomenal player with a phenomenal style all his own. When he played you knew it was him.
One of my all time favorite live albums. Nearly every songs rocks out like this one. They must have been exhausted at the end of the show.
I was a roadie for them on this tour , and they were really nice to us !
I grew up watching and listening to these guys. No matter where they played, small clubs or big venues, they were always awesome. Gary Richrath was the lead guitar player
When you bought tickets to these concerts you never felt cheated...You might have a buzz in your ears for a couple of days, but you never felt cheated lol ... Love you guys!!!
While we're landed on this album, you might as well enjoy Flying Turkey Trot! Gary Richrath was amazing!
Watching you 2 beautiful youngsters enjoying this song from my way way back gives me much joy. God bless you both!
When REO broke it big they were a rock band whose fan base was dope-smoking, long-hairs who wore jean jackets. At least that's how I remember it. 😉
157 Riverside Ave is reference to a home in Westport, CT they rented while recording their 1st album at a studio 2 towns over in Bridgeport, my hometown.
By far the best album they ever put out. Love the jams between Gary Richrath on guitar and Neal Doughty on the keys.
It’s interesting that you mention the energy, because in many of the variations of the live conversation, Kevin talks about the energy the band sends out to the crowd, and how they feel it coming right back to them on the stage from the fans. It’s cool you picked up on that.
Asia and BJ I just went to see REO on Sept.6th in Moline, Illinois .Styx played that night 🌃 also. I grew up on REO Speedwagon their best music was in the 70sand early 80s. With there original 🎸 guitar player Gary Richrath. I grew up in Galesburg, Illinois and Gary Richrath grew up in Peoria, Illinois. Most of the rest of the group were from Champaign Urbana, Illinois area . Kevin Cronin. The second singer in the group has done a great job keeping the band together all these years . But Gary Richrath will be missed RIP Gary. Dave Amato has been on the guitar 🎸 since Gary left the band
Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist, was born in my hometown, Peoria, IL and grew up in East Peoria. I went to Peoria High School in the mid-to-late 70's and REO played a lot of our mixers and dances before they hit it really big. They were local legends before they attained world-wide fame. I'm a fan of their rockier stuff. Their pop stuff less so.
I returned home from Vietnam in 1970 and the rocks clubs in Milwaukee were just kickin' ass with the bands that were coming to town. I first saw REO at a club called Humpin' Hannahs on the East side of Milwaukee. We were actually going there to see a different band ( whose name I don't recall ) that was cancelled and the replacement band was REO SPEEDWAGON. What a night ! $5.00 cover charge 50 cent mixed drinks. Always went to see them when they were in town. Saw Styx , Cheap Trick and Joe Walsh at Hannah's and it was always a great time. Thanks for the memories Asia and BJ !!
So many great live albums from the mid 70s - Bob Seger Live Bullet, Kiss - Alive, J Geils - Full House and Blow Your Face Out, Frampton Comes Alive, Lynryd Skynryd - One More From the Road.
There is a longer live version of this on "A Decade of Rock and Roll" that I like even more than this one. In that one Gary calls and "interrupts" Kevin at a very inconvenient time. It is a lot of fun.
This is hard to beat. Neal Daughtry is a beast on the keys, and Gary Richrath was such a great guitarist. Love this band so much.
Gary Richard was the lead guitarist. The most underrated guitarist ever. Pure talent and energy.
Gary Richrath was also a very nice and fun person. Setting up a show a friend started playing the keyboard and I was bringing a guitar up on stage and pulled it up and acted like I was playing it. I turned around and there was Gary and I about lost a load in my pants. He said go ahead and play man. I told him I had no idea how to play and apologized profusely. His response was hey it's okay we are here to have fun!
