So from a UA-cam perspective, there doesn't seem to be ANYONE focused on teaching gear repair in the field, either as a focus for the channel or even an occasional topic. Of course, there's no money from sponsors likely available for making this type of content for obvious reasons. Still, I would LOVE to see videos on topics like replacing buckles on backpack straps, repairing a rip in different types of materials, replacing shock cord in tent poles, using tooth floss to sew with ... the list goes on and on for possibilities. Anyone?

      Great suggestions!
I’d like to see those too.
I believe Luke did do an
      episode on how to replace
a broken shock cord a couple of years ago.

How do you know he knows how to do all those things? I mean he is always testing new gear so probably doesn't run into gear breaking that often that he would really be well versed in making repairs. I mean im sure he could figure something out as anyone could, but I don't think he has any special skill at it.

The truth is that Luke is tough enough and experienced enough to really get out there in severe conditions. He puts the gear through real world testing and comes back with very useful insights and evaluations. Thank you Luke for taking the pains to push gear hard enough to separate the diamonds from the lumps of coal.

I am stealth camping in my van on the shoreline of a harbor. Watching your videos help me pass the evening nicely as I enjoy them with a cup of hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate. I'm so glad you solved the dilemma with the tent pole. I love the character of your kettle. Mine looks much like yours after five years of use. Viewers have the choice of watching your videos. If the content doesn't seem interesting, move on.

I retired after 30 years as a letter carrier. 30 years of winters working outside in snow, freezing rain, blizzards that dumped 65 inches of snow over the span of 3 days and watching this nearly gives me PTSD! I love the outdoors but now that I have a choice, being out in the snow on purpose, never again! You outdoor UA-camrs are insane this time of year.

Nonsense. The kid has the right gear, he knows how to use it, and he’s young enough that his blood still runs hot. He’s also smart enough to pull the pin if things get too nasty.
I’m getting old now too though. I look at these things and smile and think about when my wife and I did it. Do it while you’re young and you can. Getting old changes things so do it while you can!

As a xdeer hunter, you just really want to be out there. Like the ice fishermen sitting on the bucket, without the tent. ( And people leave you alone 😂😂😂 ) Was a storm walker in my youth. And xmilitary stationed in SD, flight line. (- 10 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit).
My brother did stuff like this , but I don't ice fish either. The trick is being warm and comfortable, then it's fun. With the right gear🤔🤔 ( like a flame thrower for that icey walkway😂
Check out rirang on air , south Korean utuber who camps in the snow and ice. 😂😂 With a happy attitude. And camps with CATS 😂😂😂 at campgrounds. Easy on the eyes with subtotals.
Makes me long to travel again .

Nope called a sense of adventure and apparently you have lost it. I served 24 years in the army and my sense of adventure is strong. The big difference is in the military I had to do it and with equipment that weighed a ton and usually almost worthless. Now I chose what gear I want to use and how much it weighs and with Luke's help here what gear works and what gear doesn't.

I probably would never attempt winter tent camping. I have a huge fear of freezing to death, even if I'm well prepared. I'd rather have winter "camping" in a cabin, van, mobile home, etc. where I can be perfectly safe from the cold and wind (with solid walls)... so that even if heating doesn't work, I'm still safe with blankets.
I'd love to try it one day, but I'll never do it in a tent away from any "solid" roof. I perfectly understand you, even though I don't work "outside".

LOVE your show mate but your LUT is killin me! LOL. The orange / blue thing certainly gives you a specific look but it gives your skin tone a way to UmpaLumpa orange hue (in my opinion). The only reason I mention this is in no way to tear anything down but to help make your good show a little better with a more cinematic look. Just a thought and I wish you well.

Nice adventure and way to think on your feet on repairing the tent, Luke !! Unfortunately this seems to be the achilles heel of the Litefighter tent as reviewed by Gruntproof and others. The “Ghost Bone Fiber” poles. Apparently they are weaker than advertised and break at the ends as well as anywhere else you bend them a little too far, especially when they are cold. Luckily they offer aluminum poles as well, (albeit at an added cost). The aluminum poles fix the problem and should be standard on this tent until a stronger alternative pole system can replace the aluminum ones if they can find one. They should also upgrade the plastic grommets at the tent corners for metal ones. Otherwise it is a brilliant tent.

I’m the same way. Big plans and no action. I have ALL the gear. Most of it still in the box. I lost my husband of 25 years in 2020 and bought a truck and travel trailer. 3 years later I’ve so,d them both and bought a midsize suv (to me it is smal) 2021 ford edge. My only regret is selling my travel trailer and 2021 ford 250. Now I have a 2021 ford edge (only front wheel drive, thought it was AWD before buying). So now I’m equipped. It still haven’t gone out camping. I felt safe in my travel trailer. Not sure about rent camping out of my car.

Luke, I follow your channel religiously and really enjoy your videos. The repair on the tent pole was great but I have a question. You said that with everything that you carried in it was too heavy to carry a hand saw or axe. To me, with all of the snow and absolutely no fire danger I would have 86ed some of the water and the little stove and carried a small hand saw and hatchet and built a decent fire and split some bigger pieces of firewood so to burn the dry inner wood to give the wood a chance to dry on it's own. I'm speaking from a lot of years hunting out of tents in deep snow in North Central Pennsylvania. I'm not being critical, I'm just curious. God bless and have a wonderful day.

Cleaning your gear when it gets dirty usually does the job. But Luke also has quite a bit of gear, so I’m assuming most of it doesn’t get heavily used. When I got back into hiking I did day trips and 3-season overnights with a 36l Osprey, hundreds of miles and a few dozen nights out have it faded with scrapes & abrasions and salt stains after a few summer hikes but a garden hose, brush, and laundry soap keeps it clean.

You should (you probably have already done it) do a video about care of gear after an adventure. How to dry it, where you should set it up, restocking and maintenance of the gear you use. Just remember to cover windows and be careful of your background. Too many crazies out there. OR, contact local American Legion Post and use their hall. Just a suggestion. Happy New Year.

Luke, you can repair that tent pole with a hardwood wooden dowel that will fit within the inside diameter of the pole. Some Titebond or Gorilla wood glues would work well to secure it. And you may be able to carry a couple of spare dowels sections with you if they will fit your assortment of tents.
I hope that you can take out the ICS (Improved Combat Shelter) for a winter trip. I bought one after watching your reviews on it but that was quite a few years ago. We enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing more.

Excellent idea if what Luke did failed. (Actually that idea may make the pole even stronger than what he did).

i don't know Luke...I think not having a way to process wood on you may have been a mistake..If Needed...(Knowing the conditions). The ability to do so is PRICELESS...Much love brother ❤..Great video..as always 💪🇺🇸 Strength and Honor

Trick I use with fuel canisters while out in the cold is to set up my stove and use a peice of duct tape and small hot hands and tape that to bottom underside of cannister. usually last about 8 to 10 hours depending and no issues or waiting. Great fix to the tent and good luck finding a replacement.....LOL!

I'm surprised he was pretty easy on Lightfighter, given how scathing Luke is of far less serious failings.

37:40 I too used to use the 'it has character to it' as an excuse as a kid when my mom would tell me to clean my room. 😏

Divine intervention? As an old guy, you look back and sometimes,.... patterns emerge. They're hard to miss and go beyond simple coincidence. That's all I'll say on that. Many of us have had poles break at some point. I remember using a manzanita twig to make a splint once. Can't remember what I used to tie it with but I remember that it held. Manzanita is pretty stiff for such things; almost like nature's fiberglass. Can even use it for tent stakes,...or emergency food. It's a western category of species but there must be an equivalent elsewhere. Another good one. Cheers. 👍
