- Pain Science Physical Therapy lead physical therapist Dr. Orit Hickman explains the difference between sprains and strains using an example of a sprained or rolled ankle vs. a strained hamstring in one’s lower leg, often caused when overexerting oneself while running. What is a sprain? It’s an injury to a ligament that connects bones to each other. A strain, on the other hand, is an injury to muscle.

Thank you Doc for such a easy explanation about the difference between sprains and strains. Do keep sharing.
You are welcome!
While listening to your description twice over I have finally finally found a way to remember the difference.
It comes down to the order of letters in the alphabet.
"P" comes before "T"...and...
" L" comes before "M".
So a sPrain affects the Ligament.
And a sTrain affects the Muscle.
I think I might actually remember this this time. 😁
Thank you.
Awesome!
thank you miranda 😁
Beautifully explained. Thank you. It was helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
It's good to help folk better understand what's happened and to have information on what to expect and to clear the confusion. I just read a quote from Anais Nin "You live out the confusions until they become clear." Your videos bring some clarity.
Thanks Lynne!

Thank you so much. I had been trying it figure out how to remember the difference…
Glad it helped!
Thank you! Self diagnosing. I'm pretty sure I damaged all three. I heard or felt a pop and it swelled up like a balloon.
Sorry to hear that. I hope that you feel better soon!
❤
Doctor, how do sprains heal when ligaments have very little blood flow?
Ligaments have less blood flow but still have blood flow. This is why they take longer to heal but they still are able to heal.
❤️🙂
Glad you enjoyed!
haha funny because I pulled my hamstrain and i have a sprained ankle from basketball
Argh so sorry to hear that Grace!
Thank you
