It is a very simplistic approach. Intermittent fasting is NOT simply calories restriction. You need to understand what happens to your body when you fast. It is not just an energy balance of cal in and cal out.

The main benefit of Intermittent Fasting is hormonal. IF (especially low carb) prevents and even cures insulin resistance, type II diabetes and many other chronic diseases! Human beings were not designed to graze all day.

You’ve never been obese, so your body has always had to have food as fuel to support and nourish your body. Being obese, or morbidly obese, the person has so much fat on their body, that they have a bunch of stored up energy in their body. Once your body becomes fat adapted, which takes around a month, your hunger/appetite drops an incredible amount. I’ve been obese for most of my life, and intermittent fasting and becoming fat adapted, where my body is utilizing the fat on my body as my main fuel source, has been a godsend. And like I said, you’ve been fit or malnourished, it seems, your entire life. Being 15 pounds over weight I wish I could say was my biggest mountain to climb, but I had to multiply that by 10. I’m assuming most of your clients are obese. You have always relied on food for energy and nourishing your body, I’m assuming the majority of people trying to lose weight have so much fat on their body they need to cut that food addiction. For me, intermittent fasting was the key. I have so much excess fat that my body had to learn to use the stored fat on my body as my fuel source. It took about a month of intense cravings, headaches, and sickness to do so, but, I no longer feel hungry until the evening. I’m an electrician and working 50 hours a week and don’t feel the need to eat breakfast or lunch. Back when I wasn’t intermittent fasting I was hungry from the time I woke up and had to eat and eat until I went to bed. It’s difficult to see people giving advice when they’ve been the exact opposite their entire lives, either malnourished or an athlete, and equate gaining 15 pounds in a year, to being the same as what other people have struggled with; like being 100+ pounds overweight. It’s on the exact opposite ends of the spectrum. If you’re fit, or hardly have any fat on your body, you absolutely need to make sure you’re eating the correct and right amount of foods, because your body needs food to survive. If your obese, or morbidly obese, you could literally go months and months without eating (just make sure you’re supplementing the correct vitamins and minerals that your body needs) because of all the stored up energy in your body. The key when you’re morbidly obese is to stop the food addiction and cravings; and for me, intermittent fasting was the answer. When I get to a fit level like Lilly, I will make sure that I’m getting the correct amount of calories and nutrients my body needs, and will probably stop intermittent fasting as long as my food addiction/cravings don’t come back (food for some people are as addictive as hardcore drugs). If my food addiction does come back, maybe intermittent fasting is the way to go for me. But, like Lilly says, you need to make sure you’re getting the needed calories and nutrients in that time restricted window, especially if you’re fit and have little body fat, otherwise your body will become malnourished.

I appreciate your post, @doinkclown. I found carnivore in February or March and started tiptoeing in. Although I ate a lot of veg and some occasional Ezekiel bread, I have never eaten the SAD diet (I’m from So Cal and my mom was a hippie). I thought I had long-COVID (thus the foray into research on anti-inflammatory diets) but eventually got to a rheumatologist and was diagnosed with PMR. Between being insulin-resistant (my symptoms tell me I have been all of my life, although I was not heavy until having my 1st child at 24 yo), thyroid issues (lost it to cancer in 2004 but I suspect I had issues for at least 20 years), and now that I am on prednisone … my blood sugar is elevated whether or not I eat, never mind if there are carbs. I will continue eating carnivore despite the fact I am gaining weight b/c I do believe it is healthier. But I also believe that once I am weaned off prednisone, IMF w/carnivore or possibly ketovore are the only things that will save me.

Lillie, it's so important to make the distinction between what works for someone with a lean body versus someone who's carrying a lot of excess fat. When Dr. Jason Fung first started to popularize intermittent fasting, it was for people with insulin resistance and obesity, which he found so common in his kidney patients.
The purpose of the fasting periods each day is to reduce insulin by limiting the times you are eating and triggering it. And one of the reasons to reduce insulin is that you cannot burn body fat when insulin is present. So by limiting the period when it is present, you give your body not only the need for but also the opportunity to burn it's body fat.
And because an overweight person's body is making up for the lack of calories in their diet with their own body fat, intermittent fasting does NOT lead to calorie restriction! Once fat adapted, the body will actually burn whatever additional calories it needs from it's stored fat - which is, in fact, what that stored fat is for!
With a lean person, however, there is no body fat to burn when dietary calories are restricted due to a limited eating window, and especially one as short as what you described. In an 8-hr window, it's still possible to eat what you need, and especially because the body will increase it's ability to digest greater and greater amounts of protein as needed. But no, absolutely, an OMAD or even 2MAD diet with a small eating window would only result in calorie restriction, as you said, leading to slowed metabolism.
So really, the problem isn't that intermittent fasting - or rather, time-restricted eating - is unhealthy in the long run in general but just that it isn't designed for EVERY body; it's designed specifically for those with excess fat that need to burn it off. (As well as to heal insulin resistance, which is another issue as well, lol.)

    • @ScienceAppliedForGood
      @ScienceAppliedForGood 7 місяців тому +6

What you've described is correct. Intermittent fasting is not the same as Calorie Restriction exactly due to the fact that during Calorie Restriction Insulin can be still high if you ate frequently, and especially if it was ultra-processed food.
During Intermittent Fasting or as it's scientifically called Time Restricted Feeding (TRF) the Insulin hormone level after about 14 - 16 hours of fast becomes low enough for the body to switch to using fat as an energy source. With one caveat, that it also depends on the amount of glycogen stored in muscles and the liver.
Prof. Mark Mattson who is an expert on studying the effects of TRF on animals wrote an interesting book on the subject called Intermittent Fasting Revolution where he descried the physiology of fasting in humans.
Also, I suggest to check this scientific peer reviewed paper where the mechanism of TRF aka Intermittent Fasting explained very well: Mark P. Mattson at el., Flipping the Metabolic Switch: Understanding and Applying Health Benefits of Fasting., Obesity (Silver Spring). 2018 Feb; 26(2): 254-268. • @strix_aliana
    @strix_aliana 9 місяців тому +70

Calorie restriction is only a small part of why intermittent fasting works for weight loss. And yes timing does make an impact. If you go without food for 20 hours, your body will begin feasting on stored fat. It worked for me. I was obese and am now at a normal weight. I used to be a compulsive eater around the clock and finally feel like I’m freed from that prison!

At the END of the day it's CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT. To lose weight, you need to create a CALORIE DEFICIT, which means you need to burn more calories than you consume. Eating one meal a day with a CALORIE SURPLUS will NOT help you achieve this goal. In fact, it may lead to weight gain instead of weight loss.

    • @lrw0
      @lrw0 8 місяців тому +2

That is provably false. There have been numerous controlled studies at the same calorie level where the group with dramatically reduced carbs lost more weight. This is for reasons that we all intuitively understand for mechanical engines, but some of us have a mental block where we think biological engines are magic.
Think about the mechanical engine in a car. We know intuitively that a well tuned car gets better gas mileage than an untuned one, and we can prove it with real life examples. That means 2 engines that started the same can receive the same number of calories, while producing different levels of work. A calorie is a measure of usable energy. The calories in gasoline are what allows the engine to perform work. There is nothing magical about biological engines that changes this fact we understand about mechanical ones. Thinking it can't be true for magical biological engines is theology, not science.
Of course, calories matter. More gas will make both engines go further. Calories aren't the only things that matter.
The body actually has 2 engines. They have different levels of efficiency and different levels of fat burning BY DESIGN. Glucosis is naturally more efficient than ketosis, meaning fewer calories provide the same level of work, so there are more extra calories to convert into fat. Ketosis is less efficient and directly burns fat. This design makes sense in a world of feast or famine. @@to-tx2sz

Of course the advice is to eat carbs/sugar every few hours to keep the blood sugar elevated. I switcj between keto/carnivore and don't eat after 6pm. As an Orthodox Christian, we have fasting periods throughout the year. Typically this means abstaining from animal products for that period, but it can also mean what it means in the health sphere of just not eating anything. These fasting periods are balanced with feasting periods. I think the feasting periods are just as important. Feasting doesn't mean overdoing, it, that's not good either. But I do think the balance between the two, fasting and feasting, are important.

  • @AlvinKazu

The problem with the current generation of fasting is that people don't know how to fast. Religions fast sparingly and for short periods. For example Ramadan is 30 days of one meal a day fasting. It's not 30 days of fasting, but at the end of every night apparently, the fast is broken.
In Jewish holidays they will dry fast for a single day. Sometimes the Sabbath is a day of fasting in some sects of Judaism.
Today, we have people going on 30 day fasts who have crap health, and then coming out and refeeding on McDonalds, wondering why they are in the hospital. People take supplements like nutritonal yeast which has carbs, electrolyte powders, will stil drink highly addictive and highly caffeinated coffee... Its' insanity.
Plus, you have to refeed and eat properly.

Respectfully girlie, we may never know if it's the IF that caused that for sure and it's highly likely that it wasn't. We are designed to be able to go without food. Eating constantly throughout the day does not insure healthy hair. It's all about hormones and optimal hormone health is achieved through many things such as diet, sleep, exercise and stress management. Fasting in and of itself, especially just IF won't cause stress but is healthy. Extended fasting could be an issue for someone without extra fat on their body. IF is actually optimal for most people, 16/8, which was typical as early as the 1950s. Breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 5:30 and no snacking.

If people choose not do IF for whatever reason that’s a their own person decision if they do not like eating in that way. It’s definitely not for everyone. Having said that, IF has been proven from many studies that it’s a very healthy way to eat for not only weight loss but healing the body on a cellular level. It has also been proven that eating all day is not healthy because you are raising blood sugar all day long which is not recommended for anyone.

I never jumped on the IF bandwagon, always thought it was baloney, yes our ancestors didn't always eat every day, but it wasn't because they didn't want to eat, it's because food wasn't always available the way it is today.
If they could have eaten regular meals throughout the day they would have, it's a survival mechanism not the fountain of youth.

I think there's more to it than just calorie restriction. I saw some more indepth discussions of this recently but don't entirely understand it; it has more to do with improving the insulin sensitivity which you mention. I try to fast for a day every week or two, usually after I have been eating too much and feeling like a glutton, I need a reset. I don't hold back on food when I'm eating, which is all day most days. Now I have cut out processed foods (except yesterday at work when they ordered free pizza LOL), but still eat natural sugars in fruits honey etc.; and eat lots more animal fat / meat / eggs. I have seen a lot of improvements with this strategy. Plus I do lots of exercise and HIIT every few days.

I did intermittent fasting for a couple of years and it wasn't the best for me. First, though I stayed the same weight, I noticeably lost muscle and gained fat. Then it turned my mild periodic acid reflux into severely painful GERD. I went to a GI doctor and he told me to eat 3-4 meals a day. The smaller meals alleviated my GERD and I was also able to get all the protein I needed. I put on 10 lbs. while losing 2 inches off my waist. So, if it works for others, great, but it is definitely not for everyone.

Small frequent meals can only be okay if the meals one is eating do not cause a very high insulin spike or if the person is not a diabetic or a prediabetic. With these people, their insulin levels shoot up really high even with small amounts of carbs especially if the carbs are processed carbs and they do not return to normal as quickly as in insulin sensitive people. Hence intermittent fasting may benefit these people. However once metabolic health has been restored and losing weight is no longer a problem, especially when the person already has less than 20 percent fat mass, extended fasting may become problematic when as you say the amount of food eaten during the feeding window cannot supply the right amount of energy and nutrient the body needs.

I did carnivore from an AIP start and I healed a lot of things, but not my thyroid. Next added more fats (ketogenic), then slowly added veggies back. Now I can eat whatever I want, but I stick to a mostly keto diet, absolutely avoid gluten, soy, corn and cow's milk products. I have whole food carbs when I want them (berries, potatoes, rice, dates). This makes me feel my best and it is really obvious when I have something that doesn't agree. My TSH is still up and down, but I had a lot of gut issues as well and those are 95% healed. I'm hoping over time the thyroid will figure things out too. A year ago I couldn't even consider fasting. I was still learning how to nourish my body. A few months ago skipping breakfast started to feel natural, so I do it sometimes. I have now fasted 21-24 hours several times. I am not ready to do more. My goal is to finish eating by 7pm and eat whenever I want during the day. On non-work days I naturally enjoy breakfast around 10am and a lunch between 3 and 5pm. Both eat as much as I want. On work days I eat before and after work, with sometimes a small snack in the middle. I'm guessing I eat 1600-2000 calories per day but I don't count anymore. Weighing food and counting calories got so annoying. I pretty much just eat two meals a day but the week before my period I might eat 3x. Works for me. My clothes are getting looser and my body is changing. I probably have about 20lbs of fat to lose and I'm not in a hurry.

I don't think we're supposed to fast everyday/every week of the year, it doesn't sound healthy nor sustainable... I also think our general diet and lifestyle plays a huge role. Right now I'm neutral on fasting but I wouldn't fast past 48 hours (Fri dinner and break on Sun dinner for example). I see that Mike Mitzel (High Intensity Health) is throttling back on fasting for fear of losing muscle. The world record for continuous fasting is 392 days, so my cumulative number is close. @15:14 that 400-calorie deficit only really works (long-term) is if one is eating real food with emphasis on proteins & fats (like the foods you have in that picture) so as to keep insulin low. Just restricting calories while still eating ultra-processed junk is keeping insulin high (blocks access to fat stores) and is proven to not work long-term (why 99% of these so-called lower-calorie "diets" are a major failure since they only focus on calories but forget to account for hormones!). 🤦

You have a lot of good info in this video. However, I must agree with those who point out that you've never been severely overweight. For instance, a 14-day water fast can be a great thing for autophagy, resting your gut and liver, allowing toxins to process out of your body, etc.
That is, unless the person has very little body fat. Then, it is going to do damage, as the body starts cannibalizing muscle and other important tissue.
I would say that Intermittent Fasting is probably a valid alternative until about the last 20 lbs or so, unless you can get all the calories you need in one meal (which I can). At that point, it's called "get your butt into the gym and lift heavy weights." It doesn't have to be stupidly heavy; it just can't be 5 lb weights 200 times. Exercising for tone won't get it; you have to _put on muscle_ in order to chase away those last few pounds.

But it’s just like you said, people aren’t realizing it’s the calorie restriction at play for what they’re seeking. I also think that could be the reason why many experience the rebound and never really learn how to overcome it.

why I always say we have to each find out own path and journey
I feel worse with meals spread out and not as much energy :)
5'11" 178 lbs 60 years old OMAD works for me and can't do 2MAD :)
when I do spread them out that hunger never goes away and I end up over eating and not feeling good
been carnivore 4 years lost over 100 lbs and last 3 years maintained that 178 lbs of my 20s and 30s :)
we each need to find our own path and do what works for US by testing on ourselves and trying everything its the only way to know for sure
but intermittent fasting does not have to be calorie restriction of course
under eating is not good and is easy on carnivore or keto style
over eating is not good and can also be done on carnivore or keto style
test test and test again find your optimum :)

I only eat two meals a day. 1st meal at about 10am and second meal at around 5pm. then nothing till the next day so I unintentionally intermittent fast 16/17 hours everyday. However, I don't feel like I'm in a calorie deficit as I'm not eating at any other times as I'm just not hungry. The two meals I have had keep me satiated. I eat Carnivore btw, made the change 6 weeks ago to full carnivore and have never felt better in my life.

I was eating 2200 calories/day and not losing weight. I'm 6'5" and 265 pounds. My body temp is 97 degrees. My heart rate is under 60 when it was almost 100 before I lost 40 pounds. Got my T3 tested and it was 71 which is normal but 70 would be below. It's very hard to lose weight with low T3. My testosterone is below the normal range as well. I've been eating this diet for a year and I've lost 5 pounds when I should have been losing about 20-30 pounds. Undereating for long periods of time will make your weight lose slower. From what I've seen we should aim for 15% calorie reduction for maintained weight loss.

Lillie, I love your channel! My philosophy on eating, food choices, weight loss, etc. closely mirror yours. I've tried just about every diet out there and they all worked...at first. They worked because I was motivated and intentional in my eating and it usually involved eliminating junk food. But mostly they all involved cutting calories, even with IF. When I first started IF I thought I'd found the Holy Grail of weight loss. I initially lost about 40 pounds, but then I gradually started gaining weight. I couldn't figure out what went wrong. Then I saw another UA-cam channel video about my specific dilemma and it suggested weighing my food and counting calories. When I did that I realized that I was overeating on my non-fasting days. I was doing the Eat Stop Eat method of two 24 hour fasts per week and I rationalized that I could overeat on my non- fasting days, but on a weekly basis I had crept into a calorie surplus. I started weighing my food and tracking my calories with cronometer and now I've maintained an over 60 lb weight loss for almost 6 years. I mostly eat an animal based diet because I can't tolerate high FODMAP foods due to IBS and I usually avoid high oxalate foods due to joint pain, but I'm not obsessive about it and I enjoy treats on special occasions like birthdays, holidays, vacation, etc. I rarely fast anymore, just an occasional 16-18 hour fast if I'm busy or traveling.

I totally understand why you would not have to intermittent fast. Of course, not, you don't have weight to lose at all. So fasting is not necessary for you at all. But for those of us who have a lot of weight to lose, it is a very good way to do it.

    Hey lillie,
aren't you a bit mistaken about saying "intermittent fasting is nothing more than calorie restriction"? Because evidence cleary shows that the body gets into a state of ketosis after about 12 hours of fasting.
    I'm a huge fan btw ^^.

    • @LillieKane
      @LillieKane  9 місяців тому +1

Hey Joe! You're right, if someone doesn't eat, they will go in ketosis, just like how everyone goes into ketosis each night when they sleep. I suppose the question is, why does the person want to go into ketosis? If the person's goal is to lose weight, they don't have to fast (be in ketosis for several hours a day) to lose weight. If the persons goal for wanting to be in ketosis is because they believe it has longevity benefits, again, if they eat processed junk food during their eating window, I would still think someone would have more longevity eating multiple times a day healthy food, versus eating junk food in a condensed eating window even though they are in ketosis. And even still, you can be in ketosis eating multiple times a day. If you eat a high fat, low carb (ketogenic diet) then you can eat all day and be in ketosis :)

  • @olwill1

I read of a study (I need to start keeping a list) where the subjects were divided into two groups: calorie restricted, and keto. The calorie restricted group had a coaching session each week to make sure they were staying on the prescribed (say) 1600 calories/day. The keto group was given instructions on what to eat and had their urine tested weekly for ketones. No expensive coaching. At the end of a certain period (maybe one month) the groups were switched. The low-carb group experienced no hunger or cravings, which were problems for the low cal group (a study is needed to discover that?). The keto group automatically reduced their caloric intake to around 1600 cal/day with no coaching. The low cal group required constant monitoring to assure compliance with the prescribed diet.
I'm not saying that you should eat less than your body requires for years on end, but you must be realistic about your goals and stop under-eating when you reach that goal. but that doesn't mean that you have to go back to the SAD that made you fat in the first place.
Dr. Atkins had a rule: As long as the "keto system' (my term) is burning fat, you will feel sharp and energized. When the fat is used up and you start to burn protein, you will start feeling bad on the diet. That's when you 'break keto' and increase carb intake. Our bodies are DESIGNED to access its fuel in a certain hierarchy when there is no food. First to go (the first three days) is the stored starch, or glycogen. This also causes water to be lost. But it's not true that all you lose on keto is water. After keto is established, there is no "stored water" to lose. Second to go is stored fat. The first of these (in my experience) is belly or visceral fat, then the subcutaneous fat. IOW, you lose your 'beer belly' and then your 'love handles'. You feel good, your pants begin to fit again. The belt goes to the third hole. AND YOU ARE NOT HUNGRY as the pounds melt away. In the words of Justin Wilson, "I garonteee."
If it weren't for ketosis, when the glycogen ran out, we'd simply die. The breakdown of fat (ketosis) gives us the energy to find another meal - even if it takes a few days.
According to what I read, when insulin is high you cannot mobilize/utilize stored fat. Lillie's constant eating protocol keeps insulin high all day.
The Biggest Loser study: Several years after one class had finished their stint with severe calorie restriction and over-exercising, they were found to still be suffering from the effects of slowed metabolism due to their calorie-restricted diet. The exercise didn't keep the slow-down from happening. Most/Many had regained a substantial portion of the lost weight, if not more.

3:39 that might be true for Lilly's body but it is not true for every body. Time restrocted eating is NOT just about calorie restriction. It is allowing the body to tap into its deeper stores of energy (fat) that it cannot have access too if you eat something that raises blood sugar. People who are overweight or diabetic might have high spikes of blood sugar from protein.
I truly am happy that you have found that fasting doesnt work for you but it totally works for others. Love your content over all!

I think most of the advocates also recommend changing food , not fasting to try to undo bad food.
And most I have heard also say it is a natural caloric restriction technique. I think changing it up is a good way to do it. Sometimes 12 hours , sometimes 16-18 , nothing rigid. Works for me because I don’t like eating early or very late.

Yes, I keep hearing the key is changing it up. Doing the same thing every day doesn't challenge the metabolism and under eating every day lowers your metabolism. Having feast days vs IF vs fasting.

I totally disagree with you that a 2,000 calorie intake in one meal is the same as when taken over six meals. You burn more calories when you eat the six meals then eating the same amount of food as one meal. Your body becomes less efficient trying to process the six meals which means more calories are being burned. Consider driving your car a few blocks and stopping repeatedly until you go one mile verses going the full one mile without stopping. Which uses more energy?

Right in there with you. I have practiced this for over 10 years. In my 50s running daily and competing in races from 5k to 15k. Plus working highly physical jobs. I think about it now. I must have been off my rocker. Once I started eating 3 times a day. Low and behold I started feeling better in every way. And I never did it for weight loss anyway. I'm at the same weight I was at my H.S. Graduation. 6"1 180. Now at age 61, and still running hiking and racing. If anything I eat more than ever. I believe if you have a fast metabolism and are very active. Fasting most likely is not a good idea.

Lillie i did fasting for 18 months straight ane j was a skinny guy,no strengths.
I wenr full carnivore a d had explosive energy and mental clarity for a while.
Endgame is this: we alter our diet seasonally as i like my Xmas Dinner and pudding. I stilp fit in my small jeans as i don't eat bread, pasta and rice. I love a beer or 2. Wht not. Life is too short just to be fixated about our weight.
Some poor fatties need guidance as i did. But fasting did not cure my arthritic joints.

I just eat when I'm hungry. Sometimes I wake up hungry so have some bacon and eggs but mostly I don't feel hungry until lunchtime. Sometimes I feel hungry in evening and eat a bit of cheese but usually I eat my last meal at about 5pm. I just don't think about it. I'm usually carnivore but sometimes I crave a piece of fruit or some veg so I have some. I just listen to body and it seems to work. I think if you focus too much on timings and force yourself to go hours hungry you're more likely to to succumb to some sugary processed snack so its best not to hyper-focus. I don't count any calories or weigh myself because once my body decided to use my excess fat because it was getting proper nutrition so didn't need to hoard fat away, it just happily keeps my weight stable.

I've done one meal a day for the most part since the late '80s and have always been about 20 lb overweight. This way of eating started because when I was a child we just didn't have enough food and I was encouraged not to eat. It just became the norm for me. I have low blood pressure and I get tired when I eat so not eating has always given me much more energy. In 2007 I developed a thyroid nodule and had to have radiation which killed my thyroid. Oddly, I've had almost no health problems except this my entire life, but I have to believe this was caused by the extreme stress of under eating. I've lifted weights my entire adult life but could never really build much muscle because I wasn't eating enough yet, like I said, I was about 20 lb overweight. I started counting my calories about a year ago and found that I was eating about 500 to 1200 calories a day and was completely satisfied with that but I was shocked how few calories I was eating. I find that when I double my calories and focus on lots of protein and fat I lose weight. It's an absolute struggle for me to try and eat that much, but I know it's for the best. I'm still in perfect health at 50 except for the thyroid fiasco and look much younger than my age. Fasting is amazing for autophagy but the key is when you eat, you've got to really eat a lot of nourishing food. Fasting and feasting is a delicate balance. I get frustrated when people think everyone who's overweight is lazy and eats a lot, I'm not lazy and I don't eat a lot. Now that I'm 50, I'm just beginning to get a few hot flashes a few nights per month with no other menopausal symptoms. I know getting enough fat really helps regulate your hormones so I am focusing on that, good luck everybody!
