Just some general performance notes for anyone playing on PC.
In Game Vsync OFF. Enable the GPU Vsync. Volumetric Fog turn it down, same for Volumetric Cloud. Also consider limiting frame rate for more stable from time.
And as always make sure your Driver is updated.
This is just a bad PC port if I have to turn down graphical settings and capping my FPS when I have a high-end gaming PC.
@@venandis7833 Its HILLARIOUS SONY has the best PC ports overall as they do things like pre compile shaders. A $20000 PC in any given year over the last 20 years has performed worse than a console overall because of traversal, streaming, DRM and shader stutters.
Somehow it took a CONSOLE MAKER to save PC gaming lmao. PC gamers are to blame, as they accepted that BS
I can’t wait - Dynasty Souls!
its crazy how all over the place these reviews are. Half say its ok, other half says its absolutely amazing.
Nioh was like that too. Some said it’s a weird, overly complex rip off of dark souls, some said it’s incredible.
Niche games tends to be like that. If it clicks with you, it really clicks. If not, it can either be mediocre or fall flat.
@@johnwrath3612 true true. To me Nioh 1 was flawless when i played it. Very sharp, accurate controls and additive gameplay loop and innovative way of NG+
@@yosefyonin6824 i never said they sad it was bad. Read what i wrote again.
Listen, this is good if you put time to it, bad if you’re impatient.
Also there aren’t many enemies
I gotta say you really have to learn how to parry in this game especially when going up against the bosses to defeat them. It took me some time to beat the first two bosses when I learned at least a bit on how to parry them.
Really looking forward to this one! The Nioh’s are both fantastic and Team Ninja really knows how to make a fluid combat system!
I don't really like Soulslikes (or "recursive action RPGs"), but this being included in Game Pass plus the Three Kingdoms setting might just get me to try it.
I actually found this game really hard. It severely punishes a playstyle I'd developed from Dark Souls, Nioh and Elden Ring and encourages one I'd forgotten since playing Bloodborne.
Attacking is so important and relying on the deflection is fundamentally necessary. I was played way to turtle-y and was looking for typical openings after big attacks which aren't super common.
It also never clicked to me till I was a couple bosses in that there's no stamina bar so you're encouraged to keep attacking.
The first boss after the village genuinely killed me more than almost any boss in the SoulsBorne franchise because I just didn't click that learning this wasn't enough but rather having to unlearn Dark Souls muscle memory and playstyle was the key.
I think that's putting a few people off - I only stuck with it because I realised what the game wanted us to play like.
Same here. In DS and ER I'd just grab the biggest stick and break poise, but this game, just like bloodborne, encourages you to read your opponents movements more, rewarding counters and attacks. Beating that first boss is such a rush. I also like how vunerable you start at each level, and how even in late game the mooks can break your poise with a critical hit. Keeps you on your toes.
Thanks for reviewing KC!
What a great surprise for me. I didnt expect it to be like Nioh which I love. Can't wait to play it.
It says coop in the description of the game - is it a full co-op or some sort of dark souls system?
It's from the Nioh creators so it will be both. Likely up to 3 person co-op. It's full co-op but you can also put out a summon for help a real person to mid-level, as well as revive NPC allies based on dead players.
I have been waiting for this glad that it is finally here!
Bro I fell like that was super informative for 3 min bravo
like a good review should do
But does it feature Zhuge Liang/Kongming hosting a rap battle in Shibuya? If not it can only be a second rate ROT3K story. /s
Seriously though, looks good and sounds like it plays well too. Not a huge fan of Nioh So I'll probably give it a shake on gamepass.
I recently sunk over 100h into Nioh 2 (stuck at home with an injury), so I'm definitely going to play this eventually, but I keep going back and forth on wether to buy it at launch or wait for a sale. Looking at the reviews, it seems like they did not fix the most glaring issues from Nioh games (level design and enemy variety), but the gameplay seems really fun, if a bit one-sided.
I thought the enemy variety was pretty good in the Nioh games, but I am totally with you on not liking the level design. Big thumbs down to linear hallway game structure.
It was a bit odd in nioh 2 that level and enemy variety increases after you complete the main story, most people probably think the game is over at this point then it keeps going. A but of an odd choice but felt like a reward for those who kept going
Nioh is like an excuse to fight the same enemies over and over more or less tbh. It does it differently from like anyone else - I feel it may just be a Team Ninja thing
@@molh394 I did get tired of the fire wheels in neoh 1
Interesting to see the dichotomy between this review and ACG. normally they are similar but in this case almost exact opposite.
ACG doesn't like difficult souls games. They get pawned in combat. All I would advise is to wait for pc version until it gets patched. It's yet another good nioh style game.
I wasn’t too sure about the term recursive action rpg when I first heard it on the podcast. But I think I’ve come around to it.
what exactly does recursive mean in this context? is it just a term to replace souls-like?
@@JoelSangster I think so. Like an action rpg that requires you to repeat the same steps over and over until you get a successful result.
Wo long for the win
Is the loot as much as Nioh? Hated having to compare my gear every couple of minutes
yep
I like how The Escapist in general adopts the vocabulary Yahtzee came up with. Recursive action RPG is so much better than soulslike.
What does that mean though? That the experience is made in mind that you’ll die a lot?
I always called it Grit Combat or GSC(Gritty Style of Combat).
@@mrshmuga9 That you'll come back to the same point a lot, which pretty much means the same yeah
Nioh games are a hidden gem. Defo gonna give this a look-- just be sure to play on Gamepad.
Recursive Action RPG? That's new and surprisingly accurate. I like it
Yahtzee came up with the "recursive" name 2 years ago.
@@ArthurDraco Ah, didn't know that. Of course he did
I still think "masocore" is a badass genre name for it.
What does it mean, though?
@@VascovanZeller souls-like
The demo didn’t run super well on my computer and it’s no hunk of junk. Felt like the second level was in slow motion.
Played the demo on pc and the performance was a deal-breaker for me.
Game looks dope boi
Idk he was alot nicer on this game then I was lol
Please tell me you can disable the damage number popup.
You can.
Loving that game so far. At Earth General boss atm. Is hard and mean, and the salt from people is pilling up to the skies, but once you actually learn the game instead of trying to apply previous knowledge it becomes quite enjoyable.
Learn how to deflect attacks good and your golden
Ok, but what about the performance, other than crashes? The demo was awfully optimised.
So to paraphrase, if you are at max level for an area, you _probably_ won't get one-shot by the boss? What are the exceptions?
I just fought the first and second boss - no one shotting at all so far - the enemies definitely hit less hard than in nioh
So Wo Long kept the separate mostly linear stage game layout? Dang, that sucks.
I've played the two Nioh games much longer than I'd care to admit, (and am currently chugging away on Dream of the Nioh in Nioh 2 no less,) and they definitely do a lot of things very, very right. But in both of them, the one thing I found the least right was how the overall game structure consisted of completely separate, mostly linear stages. Something more open world style would have been very strongly preferable. Say what you will, but linear hallway style world design is something I'm pretty much done with, even more so if the hallways aren't even all connected to each other. So it's a pretty big disappointment to find out that Wo Long kept the one part of Nioh where I hoped for change the most. Is the ability to explore and simply free roam when grinding for loot/amrita too much to ask?
Still though, I appreciate that this review mentioned that part right front and center. This series does a consistently good job of quickly and concisely giving me the review information I actually want and need. Key game design facts over actual gameplay, the way a video review should be.
I feel you but everyone would just bash it for being a discount Elden Ring
@@iama187er Elden Ring didn't invent the open world concept either, so at worst, Open Nioh would just be copying the same homework Elden Ring did.
Besides, a bigger, more explorable world was the one thing I wanted most from Dark Souls too. (But it already had a better layout in the first place since its linear hallways were at least all connected.) So no way I'd be mad at Nioh for making the same improvement Dark Souls already did.
@@Alloveck No it didn't which I'm fully aware, however I'm also fully aware people can be dicks
@@iama187er Alright, fair enough.
So Nioh3?
I streamed it for a couple hours, I didn’t feel that satisfied honestly.. the combat feels good and fun.. but the first two levels are so small and the first boss has a second phase that took numerous attempts to get past.. I had to stop and grind up some levels it seems just to survive alittle easier against the first boss, where you do such small chip damage and only get 3 heals..
second area is kinda the same.. smallfry enemies that are easy and a tough boss in comparison afterwards.. but at that point you can do coop..
but yeah.. so far I’m finding the game pretty mid, i found it pretty easy to put down and I could not tell you what the hell is going on in the story..
It’s not elden ring, but it has potential, I just need to give it more of a chance :) which I’ll do tomorrow
no one cares about your streams sorry
They threw even more! stats , numbers , skill trees and micro management in there than nioh 2!
whats with team ninja and numbers ?
can't they make a simpler system
Character creation is a big part of this game you failed to mention it
Recursive I see what you did there Yatsee
"Rather than a plot..."
So...there's not an overarching story?
There is, as they're following the Romance of the Three Kingdoms highlights, but your character doesn't seem to have any impact on it, and the support characters contribute nothing to the narrative. Your character just sorts of gets mixed on a number of famous ROTK battles/incidents, while trying to track down the main bad guy, who just happens to be giving his powers to the opposite forces.
So if NioH with a kick ass animation budget
Been sinking a decent bit of time in the demo, Wo Long may very well even top the genuine Soulsborne titles in the genre.
thats a tall claim
@@dankwojak3689 it definitely is, but damn is combat fun in Wo Long
Why do we need another Nioh again?
I’m sorry Nioh is just too hard I’m a souls vet and Nioh 2 was just too much. If this game is anything like them I’ll pass.
Their combat systems are deceptively different. Dark Souls is about preparation and good decision making while not getting impatient, Nioh is about *FAST* reflexes.
Niohs not hard (especially 2) you just have to understand and use all the tools it puts at your disposal.
Being a souls vet you probably fell into the trap of min maxxing your levels and not utilizing your ninjutsu and magic. But they have massive advantages for even the purest melee builds
@vVAstrAVv maybe show him slow talisman from nioh 1.
Quite the contrary: Based on the demo and most reviews, Wo Long is universally hard during the tutorial area until the first boss. There after is easy with episodes of borderline unfairness.
The reason to be easy is build variety doesn't alter the optimized core loop of hit-and-run, dodge and Fatal Blow the enemy, plus the morale system being too kind on the player to trivialize enemy encounters including bosses.
So it ends up a matter of leaning how to deflect/parry attacks. If you do, the game its easier than its promoted.
@@aizazizzat6060 Nioh - sloth talisman
Nioh 2 - cats
EZPZ
Yes, the flag system is a good way to motivate players to explore the levels thoroughly because Lord knows Team Ninja is incapable of doing that by making the game's levels actually interesting. As per usual with TN's take on the Souls-like genre, Wo Long has a lot of very interesting systems but is otherwise entirely uninteresting
Yup. The demo put me off but the fact that they're really tryna be sekiro? No f7ckin thanks man I'll just wait for lies of p thanks lmao
Great review kc!!!
@@DR3ADNOUGHT what does that have to do with anything tho?
@@DR3ADNOUGHT the posture bar mechanic that's only ever been in one other game begs to differ man
Such a disappointing game I really hope they just forgot about this failing and try again with nioh 3.
bro its free on xpass
wtf u people high? just play it lmfao
