Put shutter at 4x the frame rate. Minimize shutter blur as much as you can. You can always ad MB in post, but trackng and roto will be significantly better without blur.

Great tips, Javert! One thing that I've been doing is a lot of testing of various techniques so that I can use the best one in production/post production. And definitely your advice on lighting is what separates really good VFX from clunky ones.

A question about the cameras in Hitfilm. If I add a particle system and use depth of field, the depth of field does not look like the dof in atomic particle or other effects with built in DOF. Do Hitfilm Cameras use box blur? If so, is there any way to change what type of iris the Hitfilm Camera is using?

A good tip is to create a concept or tests edit. Either as storyboards in colour or in programs like Photoshop. So you can create layers with stills and comp what the shot will look like as a still frame
