Can I can this recipe in the cabinet for later? Thank you so much if you can reply I'm sure your very busy! I LOVE your recipes your my favorite chef to learn from! You are so funny and make it fun! It looks so good I'm going to use peaches instead of apples.
You are a powerful, powerful man. I was looking for an applesauce recipe. Knew there had to be something better than what we get in the store and thought it couldn't be that hard. Then... I look what Chef John (CJ we call you) has first as I always do and lo and behold. I find this most amazing recipe from you. Amazing for the ingredients. Who would have thunk shallots, garlic, ginger and red pepper would be so darn good in applesau chutney. My house smells so good and it's cooling now. I bow. I bow. Thank you. You're the best.
I made 3 jars tomato chutney with my dad’s homegrown tomatoes and zucchini, also used up peppers, onions and some passionfruit in it, it’s just DELICIOUS 😍
Chef John, I cannot wait for the day when I get to see you on a network show! You are so great, talented and freaking funny! More people need to learn more from your awesomeness! Keep up the great work and corny references, ie.. "Roundy outside, roundy outside." LOL!!
I always make apple chutney at this time of the year. Great recipe. I like to put toasted almonds in mine too. And whole black pepper and cloves. Like a traditional mango chutney. Thanks chef John.
I was searching for a good chutney recipe and hoped I could find an easy to follow video, and of course I found that Chef John made one, reliable as always!
i did this 2x with the second batch using 1/2 c ac vinegar, 1c w vinegar 1 1/4 c sugar and a tad more pepper flake - fabulous - i feel like a chutney pro - thanks cj
From the comments I think a lot of people are having trouble with the name of this recipe. This is a chutney, not an applesauce that you eat by itself. For those who haven't had chutney, it is used in curry sauces, on different meats as a sauce (as you would use cranberry). Many, many different ways to make it. This one sounds really delicious. Try some on the side of just about any meat, even on hamburgers.
I made pear chutney, and used crystallized ginger instead of fresh. I canned it. It pared up nicely with the venison roast my father did when he got a deer that year during hunting season.
We have apple sauce made with tart cooking apples, sugar and cloves, to go with roast pork. I’m from the U.K. will give this a go, looks interesting 👍😊
All I could think about while watching this was your apple cider pork chop recipe. I wish the grocery store was open at 2:32 am. :( Thank you for another great video/recipe.
I used to eat fried apples and onions in Ohio growing up there. I am mostly Pennsy Dutch and Slovenian, and it was normal. Some people are not very used to "sweet and savory," as the British call it. Some people cannot do the "sweet and sour" thing, don't like bbq, et c.
Hello sir, i took your idea made it into relish for hot dogs. So i only cut the apple's differently for my use. Great recipe idea to create various uses towards food.
Food Wishes Thank you for this delicious recipe. I have often made this with equal amounts of apples & mangos. I would be very grateful as I am certain many other viewers would be also if you would be kind enough to upload another version of this recipe for canning the chutney. It would make for a wonderful gift & of course last much longer if it was canned & didn't rely on refrigeration. Thank you in advance if you could possibly see your way to showing us how to can chutney. Cheers!
Why don't you look up some mango chutney recipes and compare and in the end come up with your personal version of mango chutney. I found usually that worked best for me.
I think you can do it with almost everything..mango, pear..mix different fruits/veggies..whatever you like..i think mango and balsamico vinegar would work good together..maybe with a little honey too..
agcons I wouldn't be surprised! If I'm anywhere where British people go, I am likely to find chutney for sale, but I am tired of the high prices so plan to make it at home, along with kim chi.
Can you share your recipe if you don't mind, I have 5 plum trees and bare enormous fruits on summer time, that only birds and our chicken mostly can benefit. I want to try it ....Thanks in advance. Cheers from France.
Granted I've never had chutney so I'm not knocking it, but my initial though is apples + garlic = blech. Would be curious to try it, but doesn't seem like it should work, lol.
Does this still work out if I use Palm Coconut Sugar or brown sugar, instead of white sugar, and apple cider vinegar instead of the plain white vinegar?
The sugars would work fine, but they would change the taste a little bit. Brown would probably work better. Maybe a mix of 1/2 brown and 1/2 white. As fr as the vinegar goes, I would try different batches with varying amounts of cider vinegar mixed with the white. All cider vinegar, even though a lot of its pungency will be cooked out, may still be a bit strong.
Thanks! I adore chutney but it's hard to get any right in my nabe and it's costly when I've found it. Sheba Fehmi's channel has a plum chutney clip up. This looks fairly easy, and apples are around. Best regards from France. Uprated.
Just FYI: Conventional dried apricots look that pretty orange because they've been treated with sulfur dioxide. Organic apricots aren't treated with this chemical. They are browner and taste slightly different, but you'll avoid a potential carcinogen if you decide to go organic, at least on this ingredient.

Served as an accompaniment to strong cheese this is heavenly. Also great with cold cuts x
"The always-popular 'pull it out when you're done' system"!
Oh, John!
You're videos always bring a smile to my face. Nothing like a little humor while cooking!

of course, pull it out when you're done.
peet tabetha ...or just keep it in ...
That's what she said....
peet tabetha Nope. Pull it out just before you're done!
This is so freaking delicious! We placed the Apple chutney on top of grilled pork chops. Soooo yummy 😋
i did this 2x with the second batch using 1/2 c ac vinegar, 1c w vinegar 1 1/4 c sugar and a tad more pepper flake - fabulous - i feel like a chutney pro - thanks cj
Reminds me of the one I had to improvise in cooking school.I think it had pineapple, pear, dried cranberries and ginger. Pretty good.

Watched your videos forever...1st comment though...just want you to know that your food is the best!
I just made a batch this morning. Delicious! Just the right mix of sweet and savory. I can't wait to try it on some roasted pork chops.
Gotta love the pull out method!
I do the same thing (with vinegar/sugar/salt combo) but with hot peppers, onion and diced tomatoes. Makes a FANTASTIC chilli jam/chutney.
Egad, that sounds good.
Try it, you won't be disappointed!
Protip: Add half a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice for a fresh, citrusy zing. Goes great with pork or fish!

Sorry, I'm 57.

Eh, I'm from Ohio.
***** I think he is implying it's an Ohio term. Never heard of "Egad?" Lol
Next time you are in public and something bad happens say, "Dag-nabbit" lol
No need to go to Putney for this Apple Chutney. Brilliant and delicious recipe. Thanks for sharing. Blessings ChefMike
My dad and I made this the other night and cooked pork shoulder in it. It was amazing!
"pull it out when you're done" HahahaHaHaHaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
VIRGIN ALERT!
I knew someone was going to comment on that!
Ah Middle School, I remember those days.
*yawn*
What Did I Tell You? I don't think virignity and sense of humor are connected
I've been looking for a good apple chutney - I've canned enough sauce and plain apples for the year! Gonna try this one - thanks Chef John!
I made pear chutney, and used crystallized ginger instead of fresh. I canned it. It pared up nicely with the venison roast my father did when he got a deer that year during hunting season.
Mmm, that looks like it would be awesome with Venison!

golden delicious apples are my favorite. This looks awesome!
Absolutely delicious. Thank you.
Could this be jarred?
Maybe if its treated like a jam?
This is going to be perfect for Thanksgiving!
Aah!!! Thanks for the yummy chutney recipe💥
Pull out method for the win!!!!
Such a wonderful recipe! Thanks so much Chef John!
Greetings from Thailand 🇹🇭
"I go with the always popular pull it out when you're done system" -- HAHAHA the humor is real.
"The always pull it out when you're done method"
-Chef John
pull it out when youre done system xD these jokes always get me when im not expecting them
Sounds like a real tasty apple pie filling also
It's healthy and nice and sour.
I will try this one with a twist this weekend for a pulled pork. Pears instead of apples, a smoother consistency and some chilis to spice it up.
Looks Delicious ! Can this be canned?
Wow!! The vinegar quantity.....mind blowing.
Will be making that soon
"Pull it out when you're done method." LMAO
Thanks food wishes for your recipe.
Shrimp curry with this chutney is heaven.
That looks amazing.
Chef John sneaking "The always popular pulling out" comment in there hahaha
Great video as per usual. A request ? sticky toffee pudding ! Food Wishes
All I could think about while watching this was your apple cider pork chop recipe. I wish the grocery store was open at 2:32 am. :( Thank you for another great video/recipe.
Oh I'm so going to make this
Apple chutney really lights up a turkey sandwich.
This is probably the weirdest thing I've ever seen made before. Apples.....with onions? Garlic? Mustard seed?
You might want to research chutneys and Indian cuisine. Ever had mango chutney? Same principal.
You don't get around much eh
It’s a British thing. Really amazing though

Hello, just a question. for how long can we keep it to our fridge in a glass container? Thank you.
Looks amazing ! If I make this how long can I keep it ? Thanks :)
Chef John throwing the shade at food bloggers lmaoooo
Tastes as delicious as it looks dangerous .Star anise... Indeed ...
Sensational........
can you substitute dried cherries and cranberries for the apricot and raisins?
of course
After all, you are the boss of this chutney that's not an apple sauce.
I would say absolutely, yes. Many dried fruits and berries would surely be okay.
Sure. Why not? Dried cranberries might be better than fresh ones.
onion was also made? (sorry for my English). Greetings the spanish.
No cayenne?
You are the boss of you chutney. ;)
JayAntoinette 😂😂😂😂😂
How long would this last for in a sterilised sealed jar?
Your videos are pure pleasure…..pure pleasure…...
looks good!
Pull it out when your done .. Lmao !! Omg I lost it when u said that haha
can I put raisins in it?
Could you do a chocolate mousse cake recipe?!
Can you sub apples for mangoes? Love mango chutney

I think you can do it with almost everything..mango, pear..mix different fruits/veggies..whatever you like..i think mango and balsamico vinegar would work good together..maybe with a little honey too..
How would this hold up if it’s canned
can I use stevia powder instead of sugar?
I've been doing a pretty similar recepie for years, only thing different is that I use apple and plums in equal quantity.
That sounds even better than Chef Johns recipe. I like it.
Sheba Fehmi recommends plums on a clip on her channel. I think quince, pears, mangoes and many fruits would work okay for this and could be mixed.
slobomotion
Peach chutney is also beyond delicious.
agcons

It's best alone.
Granted I've never had chutney so I'm not knocking it, but my initial though is apples + garlic = blech. Would be curious to try it, but doesn't seem like it should work, lol.
Thanks…❤️
looks amazing i bet it be great on some lovely cheese mmmmm

darling john, tell me how long we can keep this in fridge??????
thank you
Would granulated stevia work in place of the sugar?
Definitely not. Sweetener is no replacement for sugar in a recipe like this.
George TheOnion How about coconut sugar?
Oh no. Stevia is just used in small amounts, in large amounts like this, it tastes really really bitter and bad
If I didn't cook this first, do you think I could can it?
Chutney, cheese and crackers is a yummy snack.
very close Chef John. I'm an Aussie, and it would be "No worries mate" :D
Tht is a chutney. Now can u pls make mango and tamarind .my food wish.
lost it at "pull it out when you're done"
You forgot your signature, cayenne pepper.
Cheers chef, 2 jars made. I doubt they will last long enough to cool down.
The old and trusted pull it out, when ready method?! Haha!
i'm a firm believer in the pulling-out method. lol
looks stonking John, missed a few recent vids got some catching up to do!
I don't pull mine out when I'm done, I like to let it soak and let it get soft. Iv'e been told that then it was easier to swallow. ;) @ 2:25
Chef John pulls out when he's done... His ginger that is
"Some quote from the video everyone just watched"
nice
You always pull out when you are done :P

I've made this twice so far but my partner says it smells like sauerkraut but I think it tastes great
Will be prepared tomorrow, made pork roast tonight.
No slippery blade for me..... lol! avoid law suites lol! I love this hahaha!!!!

Shall we call it a brimmer?
