I was just given a TON of granny Smith apples and told to "make something with them" been looking for the perfect recipe since I have 5 boys and I'm pregnant I didnt want anything too labor intensive. I dont know how I forgot about apple butter! My grandma and I used to make this almost every year and it was always AMAZING! Thank you so much for the reminder! I will be making this recipe very soon.
Ok Chef! This turned out AWESOME! I’ve also made your Dutch Baby’s... now I’m going to put this Apple Pie Smear on my Dutch Baby! Thank you! So much... during this Social Distancing, I’ve been sharing the love... Dutch Baby and the Apple Butter... and as always... You Rock! Next up Meringue Lemon Bars (squares) I was thinking about what to do with my big bag of lemons, and had settled on lemon bars, when I picked up my phone and there you were, with the UA-cam video! It was like you could read my mind!
I'm going to try this. But quick question, is the apple cider vinegar just for tang/flavor, or does it help preserve the apple butter somehow? I've seen some recipes not use any vinegar and I was curious, and the blog post didn't mention a reason.
so I have a pear tree of Keifer pears..... how would you recommend trying this recipe with those?
@@dbzcupcake This recipe can be done using apples; pears; bananas; peaches...basically all kinds of fruit! But make sure to cut down the sugar a bit if you're using something naturally very sweet like a banana or a very sweet kind of apple ^_^
Just woke up at 6am on a Sunday morning and couldn't fall asleep again. Now I'm standing in the kitchen making applebutter...
You are a true believer.
😁 Of COURSE!
I think we are related LOL. I watch him make something yummy and then here I go looking in my pantry for ingredients.
It happens, Same thing happend to me with creampuffs.
This comment reminded me of that rugrats scene with Drew making pudding
Chef John: "And we are gonna pass this through a strainer later."
Me: "No we ain't."
I would if I had one... but I can dig lumpy apple butter. 😛
Love how you took the time to scoop all the apple pieces into an aluminium bowl, only to then immediately deposit all the contents straight into the slow cooker. Never change, Chef John.
I figured it was because he had a small crock pot, but nope. That fucker's as big as the bowl.
thats how men think
It's probably just for us, to show us how they looked after being cut up and the approximate eyeballing amount.
Farhana NYC lmao get back in the kitchen and make us some apple butter
I put my chopped apples back into the strainer as I chopped them, then transferred into my crockpot across the kitchen
First time I saw this video, I went directly to my kitchen to make a variation of this using what I had on hand: peaches. It was excellent. Today I have a surplus of persimmons--a homegrown gift from my neighbors--so I'm back to watch the video again before I use this method to experiment with creating Persimmon Butter. Thanks for the inspiration, Chef John!
How did the peach butter turn out, if like to try it too!
@@robinaramzan7649 The peach butter was really good, and the persimmon butter was good, too! My advice: don't be afraid to experiment a bit with a good basic recipe. Happy cooking!
Presently making this and boy does the house smell amazing.
looking good chef john!! the one time i participated in making apple butter was in an enormous copper kettle (literally big enough to take a bath in) over an open fire at a reenactment of an irish fleadh. everyone took turns to stir it with a giant wooden spoon. i brought home a few gallons of apple butter to freeze, it was the greatest!
Well, why didn't you just take a bath in it??
@@olo-burrows Ooohhh! Too sinful!
I was waiting for him to add cayenne 😅😅
Red hots are a very common addition to Apple butter
Unbelievable! Inconceivable!
...this could possibly work. 😲😲
@@simplyridiculous Whoosh!
@@russhoward3037 naw, I got the tired joke about Chef John and cayenne.
Chef John, this is my Mommie's apple butter. Only Granny Smith's, stirring this all day, only to be able to have it the next morning on cornbread. My favorite. You made me laugh and remember how much I loved being in the kitchen when she was making jams.
In Brazil we make something like this but with bananas. It's called bananada and it's heavenly on bread!
gesu1742 I’d love to try this. Do you follow the same method just with bananas?
@@RochelletheRealtor yes but add sweetened condensed milk as well!
I'm going by what I remember my mother doing, but it also took many hours of cooking to develop a dark caramelized color. She'd turn it off and eventually get it cooking again to avoid burning. But I'm not sure bananas need as much sugar added. There may be recipes out there for "bananada" or banana spread.
Sounds like it would make an insane base for a banana bread.
Also, I just remembered you need to add a little bit of a citrus juice (lime is more common in Brazil)
Bonus recipe!: dice two granny smith apples into quarter inch pieces mix with half a cup of homemade apple butter then stuff inside your favorite dough and deep fry! We make these in the south and are amazing!
There are few things better than snuggling up under the covers, on a rainy Sunday afternoon, watching a Food Wishes video about apple butter.
Been looking for a homemade recipe to send to a buddy in my home state as a congrats on a professional achievement. I vaguely remember him saying something about how much he loves apple butter like 20 years ago, soooooo PROBLEM SOLVED! Making this TONIGHT and will send with English muffins and crackers! Thanks, Chef John-o-mine!
Wow. This morning I decided to make this. 12 hours later it's finally finished. I must say it tasted and smells great every step of the way. It's cooling now, I can't wait to have some on my toast in the morning!
Did this today on stovetop, turned out great with 7 hours of cooking. Of course here in Finland I have never tasted Apple butter before but I think mine came out amazing. I'm thinking of doing a larger batch next week and saving some for christmas!
Thanks for this! I’ve always enjoyed apple butter, and have eaten it from childhood. My mom is almost 88 and not in good health. I think I will make her a batch. What a treat that will be for her! Thank you again!!!🍎
My 9 year old daughter and I took our home grown apples this morning and started this recipe in the slow cooker. 1 hour in and the house already smells amazing.
I buy apple butter from my local farmer's market very often. As well as pumpkin butter and banana butter. Delicious :)
Banana butter sounds amazing, omg
Peach butter and Pear butter are also divine. I really think Peach butter is my favorite.
Do they make it as rich and delicious as his looks to be?
Dear Chef John I really ENJOY watching Your UA-cam videos - Your voice is so comforting and relaxing. But my favourite part is when You say: "After all You are the (...) of Your (...)"
Keep up the Great work 🙂
Cooking is an Act of Love ❤️
After all, he is the Chef John of his foodwishes.com...
I have been loving his great recipes for years, and after one video, I cannot get his intonation pattern out of my head. 😀 Seriously grateful for the shared techniques. He is a master.
Aww! This video brought back lots of memories of my grandmother. She made hers with apples she dried herself. I loved that stuff. She also made a chilled strawberry jam. Yum!
My mom loved this stuff. Shes gone now and when I saw this video I got excited .
Get out of my head Chef John! I was just looking at all these apples on my table thinking I should make apple butter 🤔😅
You only sees his right hand & voice lol~
Same!
I just made this in my slow cooker and it came out amazing!!! 10 hours and I couldn't be happier with the results!!! The smell in the house while cooking was incredible.
I love how you kept adding more with every bite. At first I was like “well that’s rather sparingly! You trying to make that jar last forever?!”
Then you just started slathering it on and I was like, “that’s what I’m talking about!”
Today is my birthday and this recipe was a great 🎁. I love to use this on a baked ham as a glaze. I only put this on the last 15-20 minutes of bake time and it always comes out perfect. I also add some clove to the spice mix it pairs very well with the ham. Thank you Chef John for your version of a recipe so near and dear to my heart.
Great idea thanks for sharing
Hey happy almost birthday
Great idea! Thanks.
That's genius.
My mom made apple butter from apples off our tree every fall! Good memories. :)
We do that too. We make jelly from the peels and cores, and apple sauce and apple butter from the meat of the apple. Add some cloves to your jelly recipe for something truly mind blowing.
I made pectin and put the "mash" through a food mill. I cooked the milled mash into apple butter. I'm ready for grapes with all this pectin and ready for pork chops with this apple butter!
My trees had half a dozen apples this year and only two made it. I don't know if it's an off season thing or the late week of frost just before the blooms came out. It killed all my peach blooms except 3 dozen. Last year's apple crops were full of worms. Well, next year I will look forward to more apples so I can try some of these recipes.
Watching this makes me excited about fall....and all the fall foods that come with it
This looks like the easiest & tastiest apple butter recipe I have seen yet, I can't wait to get some apples & try to make it. The first time I ever had tasted it I was only around 7 or 8 & it made such a big impact on me that I love it on a lot of stuff, like toast, pancakes, waffles & ice cream. Thank you Chef John for sharing such a great way to make a wonderful thing like homemade apple butter!
Made this last weekend. Turned out great! Thanks, Chef John.
I could have eaten the stuff in all it's cooking stages, the patience people have is amazing
Some people listen to asmr to fall asleep, but like the sound of ur voice in these tutorials really gets to me! so soothing
My Dad always bought it when I was a kid. I haven't seen it or had any in years. Brings back lots of memories.
Hmm, this reminds me I'm getting critically low on apple butter. I have generally bought it from costco as theirs is pretty good and I was too lazy to realize how stupidly simple this is. I think I'll see about making this in my instant pot. I probably can't pressure cook it, but fortunately it doubles as a really nice slow cooker. This is helpful since my crock pot died...and by died I mean I left the ceramic on the counter to dry after washing and my cat decided it looked better on the floor.
I don't have an IP yet, but my kid does and she loves hers. However, if you're interested in getting another crock for your pot, they're very easily found online. A super quick search had me looking at 25 options on crockpot's website. Not sure what brand yours is, but there's bound to be options for that model as well. I'm also so grateful I no longer have cats. Just sayin.
Oh I know. Honestly though the IP pretty much completely replaces it.
I made this for the first time ever after watching this video and i swear to god it is divine
THIS IS SIMPLY AMAZING!!! I just made this and threw away my old recipe I've followed for yrs!!! Thank you Chef!!! Love your recipes!!
Everyone you've gotta try this recipe!! Its SOOOOOO GOOD & WORTH IT!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh and I used my blender as I couldn't find my stick blender!
Out of all the Apple Butter recipes your’s is definitely the best, quickest & definitely the easiest & best tasting!😍Thank you!
Very pretty! I make mine for Stack Cakes (Eastern KY...I don't know if it's a thing elsewhere...) & they're amazing. I usually start my apple butter using dried apples (one of my cousins is crazy & dries like half her orchard's apples), which makes the aroma even deeper! I'll remember the apple cider vinegar as I've always used lemon juice, that sounds like a nice change. Honestly, i've put everything from leftover wine to hard apple cider to rosewater in mine...it's always interesting. 〰💙 Great video, as usual, Chef. A reminder to start thinking about Christmas cooking sooner rather than later, lol
[4:30] "And that's it! We're still not even close to being done." lmao
Thank you for posting this... perfect time of year for this recipe.
My grandma ALWAYS made me this & put it on homemade sourdough toast!!! Amazing stuff!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I found myself at a Waffle House one night and they gave me some cinnamon raisin bread with some apple butter on the side, it legitimately was a little life changing 😂 maybe it was my drunken sweet tooth but that slice of bread was on of the best “desserts” I have ever had
Hope to give this recipe a try so I can experience an even better version of that meal 😊
Gonna eat this apple butter with apples. Muhahaha!! 😇

I have a recipe I have used for a few years. But gave yours a try the other day. The family LOVED it. This is going to be my go to recipe now. Thank you for sharing.
Aw man I bet this just smells amazing while cooking....
Hello Chef John! Have a nice day! I like this apple butter very much, we can use it on bread 😋😋
This comment was so cute. ☺️
Love, love, love this! I am cooking it as I write. I have watched your video several times. Thank you,.
Love this process! I've always made it on the stovetop. This is do much simpler. My mama used homemade apple butter to make old fashioned apple stack cake when she didn't have home dried (non sulphered) apples.
First! Chef John, I like your humor as well as your recipes! “Now I know, I wasted time peeling apples 🤦🏽♀️”.
i bought it at a store once cause i heard it was a healthier option to regular butter for some recipes. would love to make it for myself. yum!!
I mean, given the amount of sugar in it, probably not healthier, since apples already contain sugars, but probably tastier then regular butter.
Butter is used in recipes mainly for its fat content, I have no idea how apple butter would work.
@@MrBeatboxmasta No,pectin is not fat like. Apples are fruit no matter what.
The fuck are you talking about homie?
The only reason it would be "healthy" is because it has fruit in it. But apples are high in sugar and then you add more so really no, it's not healthier to spread on biscuits than just butter. It's really good on biscuits if you're eating chicken fried steak though!
I’m going to make this for my hubby- he loves it!! Thanks, Chef John!!
I made this Sun/Mon this week and was blown away at the ease of this and the flavor was WOW!!! I used 1/2 sugar and 1/2 sucralose and substituted the brown sugar (I was almost out) with Lyle's Golden syrup. I strained it and the texture was smooth as silk. Thank you Chef John. Ps. I really liked that you still got the nutrients and vitamins from not peeling the apples. What a great PLUS.
I made peach butter yesterday (after cooking them down for 24 hours) with the last of this season's peaches. Great minds think alike!

YAAASSS KING I’m in college now, I watched you growing up and you’ve helped me learn how to cook! I really appreciate your videos!
Chef John you are the chef of the people, no joking. This summer I was poor AF but thanks to your videos I ate really really well on a tight budget. Thank you!!!
My apples are gonna be ready to pick soon this is just in time for my apple season.. I made peach butter the same way... nom nom * I used my oven set low the 1st time I made apple butter..
You are the Charlemagne of whether or not to strain...
I'm happy I chose to strain, it's much smoother. Before straining it was a little gritty.
Great timing! Thinking about going apple picking soon and this is perfect for what to do with all those apples. Thanks for the recipe Chef John!
your channel is my faith in the internet! So wholesome
Apple butter is awesome for making roast pork loin.
I live for apple butter (and pumpkin butter) on toaster biscuits in the autumn!
Peach butter and pear butter are also amazing. I think Peach butter is my personal favorite.
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Your voice is soothing, and your instructions are honest and easy to follow. I can't wait to v try this recipe
Your method is brilliant. My wife and I made it once. It involved a food mill and was nearly impossible. Thank you Chef John!👍
There is a lot of Pectin in the skin of the Apple. This helps make the Apple Butter more firm, and the skin also has a LOT of the flavor and nutrients. Leave that in there. :-)
Oh yesss!
But nowadays they ain't trustable
No skin for me,otherwise yum....Cracker Barrel apple butter is delicious as well as Musselman's..I'm sure fresh is much better. Thanks Chef
Apple butter was my favorite for toast and English muffins when I was a little girl in the 80s/90s but now I can never find it. Guess I'll have to make it muh self 😎
I enjoy your tutorials. I'm going to make this. Thanks.🙌🏼
My aunt makes this for me every Christmas. It’s really good. I planted some apple trees this year and hope to be making it in a couple years from my own produce.
MY MAN I SAW YOU TWEET ABOUT THIS ❤️❤️❤️
I prefer "my dude."

I highly recommend apple butter with toasted cinnamon raisin bread. It’s good stuff. I make bread and apple butter every year and it’s one of the few food combos no one argues with me about.
Also excellent on homemade buttermilk biscuits.

Anyone else disappointed that was all the Apple butter he smeared on the bread?
JulieAnkha N. But then he realized and added more
Same. I was like damn that’s no where near enough. Then he added more and I was like damn that’s better but still not enough. Lol. I put like a quarter inch layer on my tortillas. I’m addicted.
Yeah, as a matter of fact I was! I would have cut a piece of bread, stabbed it with a fork and thoroughly dunked it, that's how much I love apple butter! 🤗
Was hoping for clotted cream
No.
I purchase apple butter often but I use it as an ingredient for a BBQ sauce. I had a friend, originally from TX, who made BBQ brisket that was to die for. He had his 'secret recipe' for his sauce which he would not give up. Well, long story short, I eventually got the recipe from him and the secret ingredient was apple butter! What a wonderful addition it is and I always get positive comments when I do BBQ for friends and family. I will definitely give this a try. Thank you!
Great timing! I was just looking up this week how to make apple butter.
i wonder if u can do this with pumpkin.. and plum... and pear..
Yes, yes and yes. Also peaches and cherries (skip the brown sugar and only do about 1/2 the spices)

I love you man! I will be entering this very recipe in our churches Harvest Celebration party tonight!! Super excited and I hope I win LOL! As you said Chef John it was easy to prepare, I did buy all quality ingredients/name brand ingredients. Only thing I didn't have was fresh nutmeg :( I couldn't find it anywhere???! I just made a batch of pear butter and now I want to make Apple butter to.
Amber Smith , mmmmm 😋. Is it made the same way?
@@coolingwinds it's similar. I cook the pears in water and apple cider vinegar with a star anise. Then put them through a tomato ricer. Put the mash back in the liquid add 1/2 c sugar per cup of puree. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamon. Cook until thickened. I make pear butter on the stove as it's easier for me. Apple butter is easier in my slow cooker.
Could you provide us with the quantity of water and apple cider vinegar and also the amount of pears in this recipe? This year our pear tree went crazy and pear butter would be a great way to usea all those pears.
Amber Smith sounds so good!
