- This is a filler-ish follow-up to my "Underrated Mercenary Grade Hats" video! If you disagree with my hat opinions that's totally fine. Just be civil about it.

Hey all! I've gotten a few comments about the AO present in the SFM renders I used for this video, so I wanted to real quickly apologize for it and address it. The reason it's there is because the recommended fix to get rid of it (the ol' "Depth of Field 1024" SFM trick) tends to increase render times by a ton, and when I'm rendering around a dozen SFM clips per video, I can't really afford to have each one take 10+ minutes. Regardless, I realize that the AO is quite ugly, so I'll do my best to fix it before the next video. I hope y'all enjoy regardless!

you can simply disable AO by right clicking into render settings, u dont need to do anything with DoF
Hey Opal, there's an another way to get the mercs rendered nicely, without using sfm. There's a program called "Half-Life Model Viewer" that's packed with every source game, and if you download a custom tf2-tailored version (called TFMV), you'll be able to load in the models, with any cosmetic that is in the game, as well as pick any weapon, animation etc.
Incomplete set additions are my biggest problem with TF2. There are a ton of awesome coats on the workshop that got passed over in favor of head region items. We’ve actually lost a couple Soldier and Pyro coats this way, and it’s super infuriating.
I honestly love how we have gotten to the point where we classify backpacks and corpses as ‘hats’

My problem with the Bushman is it doesn’t incorporate Sniper’s chest scars from the comics.
It gives Sniper too much muscle. He is supposed to be closer to a twink.
That part of the comic happens AFTER the gravel wars (which is the moment where the fighting we do ingame is supposed to fit in).
NGL, when I first saw the Heavy coat I said "I don't see the problem, just a sleeveless down coat. Looks kinda co-" and then you drop the bomb of only *one half being modelled* and I went "...Oh".
Oh and if you actually DO want an opinion on Rage, it's Id Software's biggest swing and a miss they ever had. Not terrible, just kind of bland and generic. It came at a time where Id was floundering and Doom 4 was shown as this more "grounded" MilSim that people just called Call of Doom-ty, and it shows. Of course they bounced back good with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, and TBCH I would actually like to see that old Doom 4 concept come back as a spin-off. Like what they did with that scrapped XCOM FPS.
Not to mention 2 of there previous big franchises weren’t even controlled by them at this point (quake and wolfenstien) as they were published by activision and developed by raven studios and PI studios respectively
Will say that the primary reason for the Warmth Preserver looking the way it does, is because cosmetics used to have a majorly restrictive polygon limit. It was later raised, of course.
The creator legitimately was not able to cover the back
This is the main reason why for a LONG period of time, most shirt items just added sleeves, or a vest, or other accessories to the character's base model rather than replacing their entire torso.
It is kind of crazy that you talk about the Wingstick being the worst engi cosmetic when the Train of Thought hat is like right there

The Tsar Platinum (JoJo shirt for heavy) is basically how you feel about the buff sniper cosmetic. I don’t like how little team recognition there is besides the arm band.
Armband is easier to see. It helps that heavy is also both big and close ranged while not keeping the shoulders covered
Sniper ones egregiously cover the colors by the bending of the elbow and gun.
The Warmth Preserver is proof that Valve stopped caring years ago.
My least favorite all-class is just the skulls you craft with haunted scrap. The fact that people have missed out on getting an HHHH and that there are multiple variants you can get just annoys me so much, especially since they're not naturally tradable. Some of them even look kind of cool which just makes it even more annoying that they're nigh impossible to get your hands on.

This isn't a very big defense of the cosmetic but I actually happen to weirdly love Brimstone, this is also pretty biased since I view it like how I see most of the old promo miscs in that it takes me back to right when I first started playing TF2 (2014) where a lot of newer players would wear this cosmetic since they got it along with Rebirth when it first dropped. I also love to combo it with my unusual Fez for the Spy since it feels like a little Judas cosplay which just fits Spy wonderfully (even more so after Repentance) where the Brimstone horns really get across what I'm going for. It's also a way for me to rep one of my favorite games although I do agree it's a little ugly (they prob. should've colored it black to fit more with how it looks in Rebirth) but not so ugly it's an eyesore for me and compared to the other options it's easily the best of the bunch lmao.
I absolutely understand and respect that! Like I said in the video, everything I said is just my opinions and people are 100% entitled to enjoy whatever Cosmetics they like for whatever reason. Rock on!

So, you wanted to know why I like some of the cosmetics in here, so I'll explain.
3. I actually like this one for several reasons. I enjoy some of the general themes this one has like it being a metallic/robotic counterpart to an existing item and a backpack item. Moreover, the theme I personally imagine it having is that it's Pyro scavenging scrap from the battlefield to bring it back to the Engineer later to be reused and repurposed. It further solidifies the bond between Pyro and Engineer in my headcanon.
6. This is another one I actually really like, not only for the reference but also for the fact that it's supposed to serve as an extra backup weapon in his kit (not in actual gameplay, but in theme and character). Engineer knows that he's not the biggest and strongest head-to-head player and fighter on the field. He has to fight smarter to beat the others, not harder, so he'll want to keep his bag of tricks as full as possible, and having an additional, innocuous-seeming item to be used as such seems befitting of him. And I would happily and swiftly equip it over a beard cosmetic because I don't like beard cosmetics in general.
my least favorite cosmetic for heavy would probably be the Minsk Beef. like not once have i gone "you know what my heavy loadout needs? a pair of horns and a nose ring"

If you wanna go into the least likable cosmetic just look up those pyros with the cosmetic that changes his entire torso into a color similar to your team's color to confuse people

I love the idea of the corpse carrier, and i think its executed really well in the sense that it *sells* the idea its going for.... but if it was year round, it should've been a robot or zombie scout to make it more obvious who the player is. Even then, i wouldnt mind the latter *with* the restriction (the robot doesnt feel enough like halloween imo)
As someone who does literally anything but take this game seriously, even i agree this is a bit much. Its definitely a cosmetic that wasnt thought through fully beyond how it looks in SFM
very solid list the only thing i personally dont agree with is the sniper one being bad it fits very well with a lot of other cosmetics
What were you on about with soldier? It's just a basic 2000's fit but then you just pick the most milk toast picks for other classes that you said are not clashing with the art style or time period. I just don't understand your perspective as there are items like 2020-2022 cosmetics. Did you pick these by how interesting they are so the ugly ones that don't fit in the game are better than these bland ones because there's at least something to discuss about them? This is excluding the sniper and scout as there were discourse surrounding their cosmetic additions.
good ones are good, bad ones you can at lest do something with them. but bland and uninspired ones are just that, and most doesn't even really mesh with others, whcih was a point to their favor in the past

I mean, in fairness, I hated the Burning Beanie until I unboxed mine and realized it actually fit on the Last Breath, because the gap from the band to Pyro's head on most other replacements, much less the default, was really frickin' obvious, to me.

i think that dancing doe is on same level as your beloved tsar platinum expect one is based on anime/manga and other on meme and also i think theres more ugly/ not fitting cosmeics for soldier than a bandana with earrings but i might be biased since my soldier loadout consists of dancing doe and photo badge and flair both with ricardo pictures
Never really understood why people hated Dancing Doe so much. I think most people who dislike it, only dislike it because they don't like the meme it originated from. I'm pretty sure if the men would have never existed, then this hat wouldn't receive nearly as much hate as it does now.
my absolute FAVORITE tf2 cosmetic is the Reader's Choice. it's just so amazing because it's all class and i have a strange of it so that's why im using it :)
My least favorite pyro cosmetic is the clown body one. I can not remember the name of it, but it makes it hard to tell what team they are on because of the colors of it. Which gets abused by a LOT of pyro mains I have interacted with.
Without a doubt the ugliest hat ever put into TF2 is the original Carouser's Capotain. Go have a look at the original submission on the TF2 wiki, it's legitimately terrible and unprofessional. The updated version still sucks but is less bad. I remember playing actively when they added the original, and it was actually so hideous I worried that the quality of submitted hats was going to careen off a cliff and never recover but overall things have been pretty good in the years since, I feel.

As someone who has played Rage and has an opinion on it...
Meh. It had some cool things going for it, but it was 100% incomplete and ended on what's essentially nothing. Like imagine a cliff hanger, but if it wasn't suspenseful or compelling at all, you just kind of go "okay?".
The Dapper Disguise looks more out of place than any other item, IMO. I absolutely despise it.
it looks good with a few other selected items, but that a consistent problem with many cosmetics, they should look somewhat passable on their own first!

Opinions are opinions and I don’t feel particularly strongly about any of these cosmetics but the one thing in this video that confuses me is the reasoning you gave for the soldier entry while seemingly not taking any issue with invasion cosmetics and the like. Still, great vid and I wish well to any tf2 creator who isn’t VenusianRapper or Zealot.
Aye! I appreciate it. The reason I don't mind any of the Invasion Cosmetics is that aliens and sci-fi technology aren't "real" in the traditional sense and don't have an associated time period where they'd be realistically applicable, and also because TF2 has an established history of adding futuristic alien tech. I can't really take umbrage with the Invasion Cosmetics when things like the Pomson, Cow Mangler, and the entirety of MVM exist. Still, I appreciate you bringing this up, because it gave me an opportunity to answer it. Have a great one!
The ambient occlusion that you have enabled in SFM creates a lot of noise, to the degree it kind of hurts my eyes. Maybe it would be worth turning off?

Nah, I like it, its hilarious in a certain color to freak people out. Also makes for a good Fat Spy loadout cosmetic for Heavy.

Yeah I went back and forth on including Halloween restricted items, which is why I only included three that all had unique reasons (The update to become Halloween restricted for the Scout one, my personal history with the Demo one, and the lack of the intended full set for the Spy one)

Also, I actually love the game RAGE, even completionize the whole game and DLC. Man I wish that game got more attention but it didnt do so well and ID went to focus on Doom 2016.

I use the bushman with the huntsman to have a Rambo style skin
a big problem of tf2 sets, is that there are so many different small differences that works together tat it's harder than ever to make a set. adding even just one more cosmetic slot and touching nothing else would massively improve things.
on this point, the pyro backpack, aside the "only really good and really bad" content of the robocrate plague, there are a few combinations that would improve the look, making pyro a full-on android in the process, but you already need those slot in the first place!
personally, I hate cosmetic that change the footsteps sounds, mainly the Christmas ones. while it's ridiculously helpful to clock in invisible spies, that crap on a scout is worse than the pan when it comes to noise, and most class now have the bells
also, I am officially annoyed at all those cosmetic that were introduced as class specific, and then years later converted into multi class.

I think there is certainly merit to not wanting items to interfere with Class Silhouette, Team Recognition, or general art style.
It's not a new problem. The Fosters Facade has been a garish, paintable, hyper realistic blight since 2010. And despite that, I still run it, I think it looks cool.
But really it 100% makes sense why people don't want *more* cosmetics like it to be added, and agree to an extent that they shouldn't. If the only way to get that point across is to be vocal about it, it is their right. Within reason, ofcourse. (Don't attack creators or get hostile though, that's going too far.)
i dont know what you smoked while making this video, but the couvre corner is the best cosmetic for medic, maybe even in the game

High quality is something you should always strive for. You should always want something to be as thoughtful and appreciative as possible.
That’s my issue with the debate in the art style. People defending not having to try and take care of tf2s amazing setting and world building.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t care for the Dancing Doe cosmetic. I feel it doesn’t belong on Soldier specifically, because he’s not much of a dancer outside of action taunts. Plus it’s just a bit ugly on him.

Good simple video as always, I can definitely say that your choices are fine for these underwhelming cosmetics. Demo and Spy hurt for me because I would have loved to get these two full sets for halloween. It would have been fantastic.
