Thanks Siccas Guitar for gave us the chance to listen the advices of such a great guitarist like her and probably one of the most famous and best players now days. Greetings from Costa Rica!
First thing - what an awesome name! She's obviously brilliant and can think about fifty different thoughts all at the same time - hence she plays the Classical Guitar. I appreciate how she acknowledges the difficulty and lack of perfection through every aspect of the journey even for someone as gifted as she is. We do have that much in common. Her insights and suggestions are spot-on and doable! Very worthwhile lessons. I am better for having watched. Much Thanks!!
Your tips are priceless. Thanks. My nails are not strong I’ve tried many tricks but I’m not the toilet paper trick. Might have to fight someone in the supermarket. It’s a tough gig for an older “beginner”. Keep safe and thanks from Oz.
Just like Ana Vidović and Sharon Isbin you truly know how to make your guitar sound like a piano... What a soft and pleasant touch. I hope you don't take this the wrong way (honestly why would you...), your cheekbones kinda do remind me of Emma Stone :) Hm.. lette me tell you, you shine just as bright as she does :) Thank you for your lessons, you've encouraged my that I em on my right way.. Everybody has their little tricks and I feel like some are so much livelyer taught in person.. All the best to you and the wonderful ladies mentioned above, Your biggest fan, Marc
Btw, I have found working with and in soil really strengthens nails. I grow produce and my hands are always in soil. As an amateur guitarist, I can say I have never broken a nail!! Try it friends. Grow some food!!
random person: do you use fake nails? me: nah it doesn't sound as good.. rando: so what if it breaks before a concert?? me: *looks the other way* we don't talk about that..
great content! hey, it would be fantastic if you release a video with ana vidovic playing "Capricho Arabe" from Tarrega!!! She played it on that live chat with her two weeks ago.
Yes. My understanding is that classical guitarists did not start using nails until they began being influenced by flamenco players in the early 20th century. There are older method books that argue against nails. Some books suggest playing without nails to develop a better touch, but then grow nails. Nail length is some what a matter of taste but too long can cause 2 problems. All nail can make for a thinner tone. But the shape of the nail's edge on a lot of people can be weird and even hook the string if grown out to long. Scott Tennant's book Pumping Nylon has a great section showing common nail issues and a couple of recommended shapes and discouraged shapes to avoid when filing the nails. Following his advice I went from fighting the strings with a hooked nail to playing them much more easily. He suggests, regardless of the shape of the nail, that they should really just barely extend beyond the tip of the finger. Many though have longer nails than that. Some people who play both piano and guitar need a nail length and shape, as well as technique, to avoid clacking sounds on the keys. There is a company that makes classical guitar finger picks. They slip over the fingers, including the thumb, and tuck under the short nail and act like a finger nail. They come in different sizes and can be filed and shaped like nails. They take some getting used to but so does everything. I tired them to try them and they are fine.

Could I play without long nails :-)
