  • I experimented with spinning a shape on the lathe, I watched some videos and gave it a try making a bell. I will use the bell for another project. • DiResta: Old School Do... Since it was my first time I didn't know what to expect. It ripped at the edge and I had to recover and save it with a extra piece of bronze as the bell's lower edge. The clapper is steel . Brass gets work hardened easily and even air hardened from just sitting around, making it quite brittle, as you found out. LOL! Try annealing before spinning. Make lines on piece with blue sharpie (both sides), then heat with propane torch just until sharpie lines disappear, then immediately quench in water. This makes it soft like butter and works with copper, aluminum and all non-ferrous metals. Also, coat spinning piece in lard or wax to lubricate spinning tools, makes for a fabulous finish that requires very little polishing. Great first attempt, can't wait to see what's next!

Hats off to you again Jimmy, a true master maker. Thanks for sharing and ignore the nob ends, we ain't watching their videos, waiting for new stuff to juice our imaginations.

I was trying to figure out how you´d hog all the material from the first turn. Then I thought it was a mold...then when I saw the brass disc I had to go get my brains in the back of the room.
Amazing. Never knew one could do that.
Good thing is I just put my old grandpa´s lathe back together.

Somebody may have mentioned this, but use an acetylene torch and charcoal (soot) the brass, aluminum, copper etc. and heat until the soot just disappears. Quench and start work. This makes the non-ferrous metal easy to work with as the material work-hardens. Great job, I always love your videos and I think your lathe is the same age as mine (1938). Quality craftsmanship lasts forever. Never mind the trolls. Rob

Now this is what my first apprenticeship was about. I am a trained metalspinner (that hasn't worked in that job for like... 18 years) and i am surprised this worked out as well as it did in the end :)
    Kudos for that :)
One tip to avoid scoring: Keep the tool polished and use some grease. My old boss in my apprenticeship used a mix of 2/3 to 3/4 tallow and the rest a quite viscose machine oil. :) messy as hell but holds fine on the metal.
