Casting an Italian Bell
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лис 2021
- A bell lover in Italy sent me a design for a bell that he developed. A friend of the channel stopped by and wanted to cast something. It was a marriage made in Heaven. Too bad we cast in aluminum. Next time bronze.

I am so happy now! You are a great person!
You are so kind. We'll get it cast in bronze some day
the bell being in metal, as a sound it is not the best, but the aesthetics are very beautiful!
compliments!
I agree, the metal was terrible. Some day I will properly cast it in bronze.
@@swdweeb well!👍
I know this is 2 years ago, but I would love to have you as a neighbor. I just purchased my first forge and currently have 100lbs of copper & bronze to melt into ingots. Having the skills to make a bell is absolutely amazing. I'll check out more of your videos. Thank you, from Kansas
Well, we're kinda neighbors. I'm only 185 miles from the Kansas border 😂. I wish we were too, I'm going to get started on a series of bell videos... at some point, and I'm gonna need copper. 😄
Just curious, have you seen this instagram.com/campanemarinelli/ I'm headed in that direction, especially the way they do their small bells.
Oh and by the way, I think you're the absolute first person to notice the date on a video. Most comment as if I released it yesterday and still remember what I said
@swdweeb attention to detail my brother. Absolutely enjoy your videos. I'm still going thru your videos. A lot of knowledge 💯
Thanks for the video and the reminder that people do nice things for nice people.
Thanks Don. 😄
So funny with the sound effect, then clink!
Yeah, I gotta cast this thing in bronze... with the canon and then ring it. It'll be much better
Too cool... That was a big pour... I like the idea of the angle iron to protect the flask while pouring. Great to see you in action... Be well...
Thanks Ken. Glad the ramming tool worked out second time around
Dang Perry. You make it look so easy!
Magic of editing 😂 Thanks Peter
Enjoyed watching this one. Interesting process on how to pour a bell. Nice job!
Thanks
Very cool bell and can't wait to see it cast in bronze one day. I just always enjoy watching your process of pouring and the difference it makes when using your basins and traps.
Thanks bud. I'm looking forward to seeing cast in bronze too.... just gotta do about a million things before I can 😂
@@swdweeb only a million....your catching up then thats great...haha..😉😁
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching 😄
Nice pour. Have a great Thankgiving!
You too Jim. I might have to take you up on your offer sooner than I thought
@@swdweeb let me know
Good fun casting video... Thanks...
Thanks Ron
Oh well I guess you can cast bigger casts with a small diameter sprue :D Great work again Perry, very informative again :)
As long as the metal keeps flowing its pretty amazing what you can do with a small sprue
To hang a core in the cope you would need a "soldier" or a "Gagger" or "flaskbar and googer" a gagger would likely be the best. Assuming the core has enough collapsibility that during solidification the core doesn't split the bell.
See now I've got to go look a bunch of stuff up and learn something new. Thanks a lot 😂
@@swdweeb I know a "long" video which covers some of it if you are interested
You did a great job even if you did not have brass. Brass is a bit expensive to use for making something you do not need.
I actually don't melt a lot of brass. I'm a chicken when it comes to the zinc fumes. I will do this from bronze at some point and it will ring properly .
Excellent work! You tune it by turning off metal, so fire up the lathe!!!!!
Sigh…. If only I had one 😄
Great pour!
Looks nice!
Sounds like you dropped an aluminum ingot on the floor! LOL
Make a brass one! :D
Thanx Perry!
Happy Thanxgiving! :D
Ha! yeah it does sound like that. I'm working on making a bronze one. Have to get the canon molds made first and get enough bronze made to cast it
Like the use of a false cope, it seems to keep the core of the bell intact. I had to put a metal screen in my core to get it to separate from the mode without it falling apart. Great job!!!
Yeah it helps a lot. Olfoundryman is able to reuse false copes in the event he has to cast multiple parts like this. He rams one up and then uses it for multiple drags.
Another great casting. And another great video. Thanks again love your videos
Thanks Dustin 😄
So much educational content on this channel and now you have Italian instruction too.
I loved the sound effect. You got me!
Great pour!
Cheers from Alaska,
Greg Chaney
I know huh. It's like I'm a renaissance man 😂😂 Not!
BigStackD sent me here! I already love watching your videos to learn from but it’s awesome to know you two are good buddies too. Thanks for all the awesome metal casting tips and tricks!
He's a good guy for a grown man that wears a clown mask. 😄 Thanks for letting me know he sent you by.
I've been wanting to cast a bell. Thank You for some pointers. Nice Job..
You need to do it. Bells are so cool
Nice pour, so smooth😎
Thanks mate
Got this link from BigStackD and I must say, he was right, really good work and lots of info!
Thanks, don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them.
It came out great and I think it rings pretty well.
You're too kind. It looked good but the ring just wasnt there. Too much soft metal to absorb the vibration
Thanks for all the great demonstration and teachings! You explain the processes well and are clear about it all. I ordered your ram and runner + spin trap kit and it all works well exactly as you show on your channel. I love your videos and thanks for your time and attention to detail. Very much appreciated! Deon - South Africa. P.S. please upload more videos🙏
Thanks Deon, I always love to hear about people having success with the tools and techniques. More videos huh? All it takes is time, something I wish I had more of. I've got one mostly shot but I still have to do a lot of editing and voice-over so it might be a while.
Got home to find your new video. Made my rubbish Monday alot better. Very instructive as ever .Why didn't you use brass or bronze? Thanks for sharing !
Hey Richard, I didnt have enough bronze to cast it that way. I am also really wanting to cast it with the canon when I do it in bronze.
awesome mate!
I’d say gracias cabarello but I know how much you Catalonians hate Spain 😂
Great job Perry👍
Thanks bud. 😄
Hi Perry. BELLissimo! Nice clean casting. I'm planning on making a burnout kiln in the near future. I've got a project which is going to need an investment casting. If you don't have any joy locally let me know.
Thanks Olly, I will keep that in mind. I'm really hoping someone will see it and offer something up.
very beautiful I hope to see it in bronze! very beautiful video!!!

This nice video 👍👍👍 great job sir...
Thank you
Sorry I missed it. Had to work. All caught up now!
Dang I hate it when those pesky jobs get in the way 😄
I have cast bells for years Mostly farm bells of cast aluminum alloy. They sound pretty loud and good. The no 1 14 inch farm bells sound pretty good in cast aluminum...
Yes, you've told me that before
It may not have rung like bronze, but it was still interesting to see how you approached it. I don't have a foundry yet but been certainly taking notes from those who do, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Hopefully I'll have another bell video coming out soon. It's already cast and recorded I just have to put the video together. I do some things with this bell that I haven't done in previous bells.
I thought you were playing an AC/DC song there for a second.
Ha! Now that would have been funny if I played along with the song 😂 Of course then I would have had to deal with the copyright violations 😂
I'm a bit worried big guy. You sound a bit out of breath. Everything ok?
The cast was perfect, as always.
Very perceptive of you. I’ve been battling some bad irregular heartbeats. It’s a family issue. My parents loved my brother and I so much that they shared this blessing with us 😄. I’m not ignoring it. Thanks for checking.
@@swdweeb take care now 😉
Man that's great I'm getting in to this hobby iv been doing this at work as well making parts I'm thinking about putting it on UA-cam don't think anyone would wach it but may try
I was given great advice once, do it because it makes you happy. If putting videos on YT makes you happy, do it. If nobody watches, doesnt matter
@@swdweeb hey iv got some questions about casting iv kinda new to it off and on about 8 years or so can't find a good way to keep my part from shrinking it looks like a diecast part they say they sandcasted the part I don't believe him think you can help me out if you're interested
@@shanemiller6947 I'm happy to try and help. Email me at swdweeb@gmail.com
You just need to use a thorn and make the bell slightly thinner
a thorn?? educate me.
@@swdweeb the thorn (or torn) machine. Where the bell would spin and a blade you control would slightly make the bell thinner and it would ring a bit better
@@averageslytherinperson6154 Cool, I always just refer to it as a "machine that you use to tune a bell" 😄 Never knew it had a name. This bell needed to be made using a trickle. The sides were vertical and parallel and did not want to release from the sand.
Great pour! I'm really impressed with the pouring system you have developed. Your sprue, runner, gate, and vent work so well together.
I'm curious why no kind of riser was used. Was shrinkage not an issue with the aluminum, or was it uniform shrinkage throughout the material coupled with rapid cooling that made a riser unnecessary?
You know I use the name "feeder" right? 😂 The part is pretty uniform in terms of thickness, there isn't a disproportionately thick section in it that would shrink more than other areas.
I don't know that there was any abnormal rapid cooling going on. I didn't use things like chill plates just the sand. This is the thickest bell I've poured, the walls are about 1/2" (12mm) thick. It clearly stayed molten for quite a while as the pour made it from bottom to top
@@swdweeb Feeder is a better term, I agree (as that's what it does), but riser is the traditional term. I confess, I didn't look at the Cherenkov (sp? - that may be radiation 😂 guy) formula for whether this needs a feeder.
With regard to cooling, I was referring to the difference between the melting point of aluminum and bronze, thinking that, encased in that mass of greensand molten aluminum would cool more quickly than molten bronze -- less heat in the aluminum.
It really makes one think about how much of an art bronze casting was long ago (trial and error), when they had no idea about bifold theory, and were pouring bells and cannon (!) from the top down - imagine a couple of thousand pounds of molten bronze going into a cannon mold!
Scrap copper is easier to find and you can add some tin to the copper about 20 percent and make your own bronze. You can order tin bars
I know that. I have both scrap copper and tin bars. It's just a matter of having time to make the alloy. I prefer to make ingots prior to casting items as I think I get a better mix with less stirring the metal in the crucible,
Hey there I always enjoy your videos. Did you get to try allowing zinc with aluminum? I have found out that adding some zinc makes aluminum bells ring better.
Hi Ron, no I never did. quite honestly I forgot all about it. Sorry
@@swdweeb When you can try 1/3rd zinc mix to 2/3rds aluminum when you can.
Hey Perry - how's it going - long time no see, good video, very interesting
Hey there's the man I aspire to be. 😄 How are you mate? I hope you're doing really well.
मस्त
कभी कभी
Did you use cast aluminum which has carbon added to make it hard. Also you can add some zinc to the mix probably a third and it should sound better.?
I did not add anything to the aluminum
I was wondering if you alloyed some zinc in the aluminum/ I get better results when I make aluminum bells.
No I have never mixed zinc with aluminum
@@swdweeb I have and the bells had a better tone
@@swdweeb I have found that adding some zinc to melt makes a more sustain ring to aluminum.
You've went on a bell casting frenzy haven't you?
I'm not sure four bells in three years is a frenzy, but...
There is a big part of me that would like to focus exclusively on bells. That isn't possible but there is a science and magic to bells that I would live to delve into further.
@@swdweeb lol. I can tell you are excited about the bells.
@@odellcreations There is no denying that 😄 I do love 'em
@@swdweeb that's what's important. Do what you love Perry!
@@swdweeb I have a friend that is going to cast a full scare replica of the Liberty Bell. He is out your way...

I've been following your UA-cam journey for a long time now, and have occasionally left a message or two on your channel, and I really appreciate that you have always taken the time to give a reply no matter the levels of stupidity I have shown in my comment 😃
Also, I have learned a lot from you, thank you ... And I really mean that... thank you...
@@mortenchristensrn2487 I always figure if you take the time to comment the least I can do is take the time to reply. I'm glad I could help you along your journey.
How costly was it to form the pattern by 3D printing?
The filament cost is negligible. $2-$3 Its the bloody printer that costs the money. My current printer was $800
May I send you some pics of some of my bells? How can i send them to you?
You can email me at swdweeb@gmail.com
Do you have a copy of that bell available, or was it proprietary? I'm looking for a design to cast. Thanks!
Sorry, that bell design, in particular, is owned by someone else. I mention that in the video. I have other bells that I've designed that we can talk about. Let me know if you'd like to get a model for one of those
@@swdweeb I would appreciate that. I'm trying to find a European style bell to cast in bronze, but I'm having difficulty finding something that's scalable for the right size to build a new mold around.
