When the episode starts with a Sal continuity rant you know it it going to be good. To be honest when a Backissues episode drops you know it is going to be good.
I'm reading a spider-man volume of black suit/venom stories and it's gotta be some of my favorite spider-man content in years, very funny and real. Dark and fun at the same time, street level spidey with family drama is best spidey.
@@zionharris9432I mean the symbiotes are just an anomaly. It's not like Spider-Man is hunted by a family of energy vampires who traverse the multiverse who overthrew the spider wasp goddess.
Jenkins did a similar thing with adding a goofy supporting cast when he wrote Hellblazer. But every writer on that book created an entirely new set of characters for Constantine to hang out with, so it stuck out less.
Fun fact this was the first graphic novel I ever bought with my own money at the age of 7. I remember marvel released the man-spider action figure two years prior so seeing a my action figure in book form was epic. All in all good times
"Please NERD, we're talking about COMIC BOOKS!" 🤣🤣🤣 This was such an amazing episode. I love listening to you guys make fun of Spiderman ❤ Stay awesome
Another stellar episode from the ComicPop crew. After it was over I said to myself, “now I wish they’d cover Spider Island”, only to realize they had already done so six whole years ago.
I love the Spider-Man episodes where Sal talks about the continuity, the different titles, and evolution of arcs across creative teams. My pipe dream would a lecture series by Sal on the Spider-Man narrative and the various titles and eras.
Man I love this channel. Im trying to think of any other youtube series (or show for that matter) that i have consistently watched longer than Back Issues. I loved it back in the TLH days, when most of the humor came from Sal explaining comic tropes to his friend who weren't that knowledgeable on the topic. I love it now when everyone on the couch has probably read more comics than I have and a lot of the humor comes from them trying to come up with ways to explain plot holes. I love that you guys walk a pretty fine line of covering relatively recent books, classic older titles that are almost unanimously loved, and books that are either so bad they are good or so insane that they cant help but to be entertaining. I can find decent videos on 1 or 2 of those traits on other channels but never all 4. Chemistry between everyone is amazing and I can watch an episode on a book i just finished or a title I know nothing about and always walk away entertained and with at least one new piece of information. Keep it up. Should probably join your Patrion for all the free content over the years added with the fact I have used adblock the entire time. - My only complaint is that im still waiting on my sleepwalker episode!
I want a comic series that's... well a bit like Heroes in Crisis but actually GOOD. But the idea of super hero group therapy that focuses on THESE kinds of events littered throughout comic history where it wasn't, like, intended to be mega-traumatic but absolutely, positively WOULD be for anyone living through it. Peter and Carol Danvers both bonding over their shared forced pregnancies while being treated REALLY poorly by their friends/family. Comedic gold.
The first 2-3 issues of this story were the very first Spider-Man comics I ever bought. Never did get around to reading the rest of this so I'm looking forward to this episode
I literally forgot about that this story even existed. I read the 2000’s spectacular spider-man last year and it just slipped my mind. I like to think it was protecting me from this insanity lol.
Speaking of this era for Spider-Man, I’d love to see you guys cover the SM2 initiatives released by Marvel. A lot of books spawned to push Spider-Man limited series in the lead-up to SM2!
He should still go to Strange because he's still a medical doctor! I mean, his main shtick is the magic but he still is a surgeon and, presumably, was like an attending and shit before he became a surgeon.
This was a damn fine episode. Its usually the 90s DC schlock events that are my favorite ones you do but this fits right in with One more Day, One moment in time, etc that are marvel's shittin' the bed, just very very funny
Thanks guys! Loved this episode! As I watched the first minute of this video- I wondered why Sal was recalling this specific storyline from my childhood reading these issues. Then (as I must represent that third of the population) my insect genes kicked in and my arachnid affectionate brain could only form two words in the first 60 seconds: "ORGANIC WEBBING!" 😂
Hot (?) take, but I think that “Spectacular Spider-Man” should be re-branded as the new Miles Morales title, while leaving Peter Parker as “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It would let Miles stand on his own while still keeping Peter on a prominent, if distinct, title as well. Just a thought.
I feel like Spectacular is too heavily associated with Peter on its own. We should probably get Miles his own adjective at some point. Ultimate would have worked... but well. Maybe use Sensational, seeing as it was only bery briefly used for Reilly.
Ugh that happened to me! Stepped on a huge spider at a store I was working in and could feel underneath the sole of my work boot something moving. Looked down and saw thousands of baby spiders. I danced like a goblin and grabbed a can of raid on a nearby shelf and went ham. Had the creepy crawlies for a week! 43:42
My first comic i ever owned was web of spider-man issue 9. Such a weird random story and cover but as a little kid it was dope seeing black suit spidey hold down a giant sized brute defending a weirdo in a lightning bolt costume. Like stan lee said every comic is someone's first and I'm glad that one was mine
I’m glad I had other entries Into Spider-Man comics around this time cause whew boy this might’ve scared me off. Thank god for Ultimate Spider-Man, marvel adventures Spider-Man, and Stan Lee’s and Steve Ditko’s run on Spider-Man. Those were the books that kept me a fan after watching the movies around this time
I wonder if "you're pregnant" was suppose to be, he's pregnant... with himself???? Also, Ultra specific reference, be damned, who doesn't know Calvin and Hobbes!?
Sal just reminded me in this episode that they never covered Brand New Day......oohhhh dear god. Well that's something to look forward to one day. Maybe when the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man Disney+ show comes out?
While this story soured me on the series. I really did like some of the stories before it. The green goblin death in the family is one of my favorite spider-man stories
Sal has sooo many funny lines from this episode😂😂 Some of my favorites are: 18:59 “You know this wouldn’t even work” 21:34 Spiderman after going into space🚀😂 48:07 [completely serious] It’s a comic book. 48:21 you know you don’t have to right it before it’s due (as a procrastinator, I feel attacked😅, but a good reminder as I currently procrastinate) Also, Tiffany could write a better version of this story, because she had some good ideas.
You know it's funny, I was an avid reader of AMS from issue #232 all the way to about 498 when I dropped out when I moved away from my home town. I remember being tired of what they had Mary Jane doing, and since money was tight I dropped out. Little did I know that sooner after OMD would occur. As I recall, I was at my first real after college job and was laughing that "DC is doing this epic event about rings of power in all the colors, while Marvel is having a ... civil war?"
Couldn't help but crack up when you guys were talking about what if marvel had a Black label style imprint they could publish a mature Spider-Man story with while sitting next to my Deadpool Max and Spiderman what if web of shadows floppies - 100% agree with y'all still funny timing tho
ooh this should be fun Spider-Man Disassembled such a weird and confusing story that made no sense in context to the actual avengers disassembled storyline, but overall this was great comic pops back issues episode i love it so much. :)
Started reading comics around 2004-2006. My first comic i read in graphic novel form was batman:hush but my first Spider-man comic was this and Maximum Carange lmao. So I have alot of love for this book
Loved Paul Jenkins run on peter parker: Spider-Man but agree that his spectacular run doesn't hold up as well. Loved JMS' run but agree it had its weak spots as well
All this magnificent talk of KRUMPING (crumping) and not one of you had the courage to shake what ya mamas gave you!? Wheres Ben when you need him!? Im sure he would be ALL about CRUMPING it up on camera!? Like it’s 2010 all over again! Lmao… okay Im going back to my shame corner now, but I just couldn’t resist! The imaginary image of Ben trying to demonstrate how crumping works to you all while looking on in horror amuses me to no end! 😂🤣
I had a What If storyline in mind where S.H.I.E.L.D was at the demonstration where Peter got bit and an agent follows him home. On the night when Uncle Ben was going to die, the agent is visiting and stops the burglar. However, when Peter comes home all he sees is police cars. He rushes in and see that everyone is okay, but is cornered and confesses his powers. Shamed, and seeing the man he let get away, he devotes his life to S.H.I.E.L.D and becomes a great scientist there. He develops his webbing as a non-lethal way to apprehend criminals. You could also tie his villain's into Hydra, as they have that green/purple motif. Maybe he meets Gwen on the helicarrier as they are both exceptional, and she still dies from Osborn. Him meeting MJ is when he tries to "come back to ground". I could also see Spider-Man being recruited by Doctor DOOM in a similar fashion, where a Latverian agent followed him home, stopped the burglar and DOOM offers Peter a chance at a new life, since DOOM has exposed his secret now to his family. The Parkers then move to Latveria where Peter is an agent of DOOM but also a kind of folk hero to the people, showing how anyone could be of use to the Monarch of Latveria.
At this point Marvel should just shoot Spider-Man into space, have him tool around with the GoG and encounter other alien races, then after like 5 years or so come back to Earth "rested and relaxed". You could use it as a launch point for all kinds of stories about Spider-Man in space. Maybe his blood gets infused on a planet and it's the Peter Planet (which could be taken really weird) and tie it into the Bio creature from that Punisher run.
Paul Jenkins is a top 5 Spider-Man writer. Peter Parker: Spider-Man #50 is one of the best Spider-Man comics of all time. His run is pretty good and made for a good B run to Straczinski's Amazing
I don't know if this was said yetbut her laying Eggs in spider man reminds me of the tarantula hawk wasp that specifically hunts tarantulas to inject their offspring inside of them, and then when the offspring are born, they eat the spider, I think it might be a reference to that
It's funny how in each decade they launch a new Spider-Man title. "Amazing" in the 60s, "Spectacular" in the 70s, "Web Of" in the 80s, and Mcfarlane's Spider-Man and "Unlimited" in the 90s. I forgot "Sensational".
Idk, Spiderman lost me after Sins Past. I admire Sals devotion to the Webb Slinger but to me? I can not get behind a guy who HAS to be miserable in order to sell books. I appreciate the comic book lore though 😎👍🏾

What I like about Spider-Man stories is how relatable, but more importantly how grounded they can be.
Spider-Man comics: *casual mpreg*
Reminds of Ben 10: Alien Force. "This is a more grounded, realistic version of the Ben 10 mythos...aaaand Ben is pregnant."
Before that infamous episode of Jimmy Neutron. And the infamous subplot of Trollhunters rise of the titans there was this comic.

24:03 a second KRUMP has pushed the helicopter into the tower 😂
You know considering the results of this and Civil War I'm starting to realize why Spider-Man wasn't part of the Avengers for most of his history.
Yeah, bad writers can really do that. Just look at the marriage. It hasn’t been the same since 2007.
I’ve never seen an episode where Ethan laugh this much. Man was enjoying every second of this ridiculous story. 😂
Spider-Man: For you Cap, it was the worst day in your team’s history and one of the worst days in your life. For me… it was Tuesday lol

Phantom Zone? Negative Zone? What's with all these Zones?! What is this Sonic the Hedgehog?
It'll all make sense in the Twilight Zone.
to be fair maybe Jenkins got the Spidey and Cap dynamic mixed up with the ultimate versions happening at the same time.
I haven't read this in a long time, but you might actually be onto something. As ridiculous of a mistake as that would be, it checks in my head. Haha

One day, Sal has to do a side by side comparison of the Jenkins, JMS, and Millar runs. I just don't know if his heart can handle it. 😂
