The original Painkiller cocktail was created by George and Marie Myrick for the Soggy Dollar Bar in Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. According to the Myricks, the original Painkiller featured either Cruzan or Mount Gay Gold. It wasn't until 18 years later that Pusser's Rum would trademark the Painkiller which it still holds the trademark to today.
A little more on these recipes:
The Pussers: The recipe is well known and shared online, on their mugs, and by their creator Charles Tobias with the 4:1:1 ratio. But online and in books, most people default to this version as the official Soggy Dollar version without realizing Pusser's did not create the cocktail.
Soggy Dollar: This version is a little more difficult to source, the recipe I used today is from Forbes (link below) and says it's directly from the bar, but doesn't necessarily seem official. It's in an article written by travel contributor, Brittany Anas. I did find a video from the Caribbean Journal where the Soggy Dollar bar is mixing up a batch of Painkillers and it's not conclusive, but does look like it is either equal parts orange juice, pineapple juice, and CocoLopez OR more orange juice than pineapple and still equal parts pineapple and CocoLopez. Video is a little inconclusive due to the size of the cartons and cans and we don't know what they started with. It is clear it is not a 4:1:1 ratio

Check out the episode description if you want to know more about where I found the Soggy Dollar Bar recipe.
“It’s an interesting take. It’s bullshit but it’s interesting.” Thanks for calling out the BS of trademarking simple cocktails.
Thank you for the history, I had no idea Pusser’s wasn’t the original base spirit.
The Pain Killada is a terrific take on the Painkiller. Highly recommended.
Yep I really like Distinguished Spirits riff. Hope Derek covers it.
Love the video! Appreciate the history, research, and commentary, as opposed to just another recipe video. This has been my favorite cocktail channel on UA-cam lately.
Awesome! Thank you!
I have a Painkiller on the brunch menu in all my restaurants. I love telling this story every time we roll out brunch in a new location.
We did basically this same experiment (including one that had equal parts orange/pineapple). The results were surprising and varied:
Ultimate Painkiller
1½ oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum
1 oz Lemon Hart 1804 Demerara Rum
1 oz Coconut Creme (Coco Real)
3 oz Pineapple Juice
1 oz Orange Juice
Mrs Mai Tai’s Painkiller
1½ oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum
1 oz Lemon Hart 1804 Demerara Rum
1 oz Coconut Creme (Coco Real)
1 oz Pineapple Juice
2 oz Orange Juice
I've also made Painkillers with Pussers Gunpowder Proof and also with Smith & Cross Jamaica rum, both were better than the standard issue Pusser's or 86 proof Demerara.
I'll have to run through these and feature one in the next Painkiller episode. And I promise to do it blind because otherwise I'd choose Mrs Mai Tai's. I'll keep an open mind.
@@makeanddrink It's basically the same as yours, though I split the rums and used a little extra. I too felt 4 oz pineapple was too much but was shocked I liked the heavier pineapple version better.
Your Ultimate is my recipe as well except I sub the Lemon Hart for Smith and Cross and will sub the Orange Juice for Tangerine if I have it on hand. I love this drink but mostly for nostalgia reasons (spent a good bit of time bumming around the BVIs in my youth).
Yep, I use either one of those rums, plus OFTD.
I’ve just been adding a little gran marnier to my piña coladas and calling it a day
My recipe is 1 and 1/2 oz of oj 3 and 1/2 pineapple 1/4 oz lime 1oz cream of coconut 1oz Appleton estate 1oz Coruba and 1/2 oz smith and cross and do cinnamon and nutmeg on top
I love the shade lmao
I made a Painkiller the other day using a blend of 1:1:1 Plantation 3 to Goslings to Smith and Cross. I like it. I used freshly squeezed orange juice and grated both nutmeg and orange zest on top. This brought out some orange notes from that supporting player. Not something I'd do every time but a nice addition I think.
Finally, a little love for one of my favorite rums, Cruzan.
I like the version from PKNY. Get the cocktail paired down to right amount of juice so you know you're actually tasting a cocktail. Obviously I bump up the recipe to 2 oz of rum.
1 1/2 oz Virgin Islands Rum
3/4 oz Coconut Cream
1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
3/4 oz Orange Juice
Nutmeg
As always, love how thoughtful and well-researched this was!
Thanks so much!
“It’s an interesting take. It’s bullshit, but it’s interesting.” Go get em!! 🔥
Wicked history lesson! I knew Pussers were pushy on the trademark but had no idea they had little to no influence on the recipe and name. Definitely gives me a new perspective on the brand. Thanks again for the wonderful content!
I drank several of the original version from the Soggy Dollar Bar in the mid-80s. I've been pissed at Pusser's arrogance for as long as I can remember. If I'm in a tiki or tropical bar, I'll order, "make me your version of a Painkiller and don't use Pusser's." I'll never send a penny their way. Cheers!
Screw Pussers! This is the first drink I shook that made me go "Oooooh i get it" so I'm especially bitter that they trademarked the name of a cocktail they have no claim to, just so they could push their just passable rum. My spite for them only doubled because of a bar owner I worked for who was a weird british navy larper (he was just a huge dork and had never been in the navy) who was obsessed with the brand.
The Original Soggy Dollar is the best! I have many, many of those cups!😂
I made painkillers last night, following the Pussers recipe. I didnt have orange juice so I used grapefruit juice but I'm not sure I could tell the difference. Goes to show how little the orange juice is doing in that drink
I found this cocktail recipe in Beachbum's Grog Log. His called for the Gunpowder proof version of Pusser's. Having tried all 3 rums, the 2 you taste tested and the Gunpowder proof. I always reach for the Gunpowder proof now. Night and day difference between all 3 when you go Gunpowder proof... In my humble opinion. Really great video! Glad I subscribed!
Oh I am sure the gunpowder proof would be better and I have a bottle, but I didn't want to have a run in with the authorities.
I love Pusser‘s version! It gives me hints of dried fruits and Malaga ice cream. The orange juice does give me a little more acidity but I urge anyone to try it with blood orange juice.
I tried the original piña colada and found it quite boring and the painkiller became the preferred alternative for me. Both these drinks don’t try to put the rum up front and that’s perfectly fine as it’s a tropical tiki drink and a lot of people just want a juicy cocktail rather than a stiff drink. There are countless other options if you want something stronger ✌️
Love this one! My favorite cocktail. It’s made terribly in some beach bars, and basically becomes a juice cocktail.
I use the trademarked recipe, but cut the pineapple juice down to 2oz. For the rum I use a mix of any 2 or 3 rums (1oz each)
One of my favourite cocktails that way! I will say that I only recently started using Pussers, and I think it works great when mixed with another rum (I use the gunpowder strength)
Great video
Thanks for the video! I was able to get to the Soggy Dollar by foot, need to crawl under a few fences 😊. They handed me a glass and a bottle of Pusser’s. You poured as much rum as you like and they made the drink!
Can’t wait to hear your take on the tropical standard version!
Thanks! Great controversial topic and presentation. Thank you for asking and answering the tough questions regarding this drink. It’s one of my go to drinks. I recently acquired a bottle of soggy dollar dark rum to try. Wonder what I’m gonna make? 😉
I also signed up for your patreon, I’ve never used that before today. We’ll see how that works. Thank you for your efforts and high end productions.
Thanks so much! I greatly appreciate it!
you want to try this painkiller twist
Cafe Colada
1.5oz (45ml) pussers rum
0.5oz banana liqueur
0.5oz coffee liqueur
1.5oz (45ml) pineapple juice
0.75oz (22ml) cream of coconut (preferably Coco Lopez)
0.5oz (15ml) fresh orange juice
0.25oz (7ml) fresh lime juice
Nutmeg
LOL...I can sure use some Painkiller after the meeting I just had.
That's what they want you to believe.
I do like a painkiller and I have my own recipe. I usually use Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof. This was interesting but I’d like to see a comparison of everything the same except the rum.
THE SHADE 😂
Man you have really stepped up your game the last few videos. Keep it up
I appreciate that!
Nice job!
Thanks!
The Trop Standard PKNY is my favorite variation of a painkiller. Also it looks the coolest!
This video made me so happy! Derek has a hot take!
Great video. I was never a fan of a PK. I'd rather skip the Oj and just have a pina colada. Or have a Pina Colada Royale....a regular pina colada with a 1/2 oz of Grand Marnier added.
PREACH!
Pain Killada is also good one! But I will try the Soggy Dollar version as well 😋
Pussers is absolutely delicious as is their rum.
1)totally agree/concur with the Trademark BS
2) that said I enjoy both recipes with whatever rum I ultimately want to use.
I'll have to try the OG but doing a 50/50 mix of Jamaican rum and OFTD with the Pussers recipe has been my go to.
I need to try the Soggy Bottom one.
I wonder if meeting somewhere in the middle would be good? 2oz pineapple juice, 2oz orange juice.
Will give it a try tonight!
My favorite drink by far i replace the orange juice with lime juice
Pain killers are great
RIP, PKNY. I am 100% with you on the ethics of this cocktail and on how best to make one for home use. I was hoping for a bit more from the Cruzan Single Barrel when I made one with it a while back, but I still prefer it over Pusser's. I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Painkillers, but I thought the version in Tropical Standard was pretty damn good (big surprise there /s).
"Who of has has not done that ourselves?" Lmao.
PainKilla is our word
The best Painkiller is the one that washes the salt water out of your mouth after the swim in to the Soggy Dollar. BTW, many people take a dinghy in to the beach, so they don't swim.
But that ruins the whole soggy dollar story
Hmm been a while since I’ve had a painkiller. Found them too sweet but quite fun. Was serving them without booze for the younglings and they enjoyed them.
Great to see we are getting into Painkiller season. Interesting you went with more OJ (2oz) vs pineapple juice (1oz) in the "original". Most specs I have tried build with more pineapple than OJ. I will give the original a try.
The reasons are all outlines in the episode description. Was going off of best information out there and not my preference.
Pain Killada by Distinguished Spirits is my go to PK. His Muerto Bali Hai is another you gotta try too
Love this episode! Also what size is your ice scoop?
It's 1 cup
It is hot today, and I live closer to ocean than you, I think.. but for the drink.. I don't like pussers because it gives me a headache, I put 1oz OFTD and 1oz demerara rum. Also, instead of OJ, I put .5oz lime juice.
Did Pusser's get exactly what they wanted - we keep talking about them, giving them attention? If so, brilliant
Not all press is good press if talking about them leads to people not buying their rums.
I think they do well with the crowd that doesnt know the story. The ones that just buy into them as creating the Painkiller.
@@makeanddrink would love to see you and Arminder doing one of your blind taste episodes with some Pusser's rum included in the lineup... Regardless, your videos are one of the only things I still come to UA-cam for. Good work and thank you.
If their goal was to get me to never buy their rum, they did a great job.
I have a different recipe. 60ml Dark Rum, 45ml Pineapple juice, 15 Orange juice, 22,5ml Coco Lopez . Maybe more balanced?
Bro where do you get your shirts at? Pretty much all of them look amazing!
Big fan of your videos too btw :D
I just had the original while listening to 'Painkiller' by Judas Priest.
Screw all the original and trademarked recipes. How about an Ultimate Painkiller recipe, with whichever rum that might be?
Have to have powdered egg whites if you want an orange Julius taste, be interesting with an acid adjusted OJ version
I would take Tradewinds over a Painkiller anytime
I’m debating to try this as a frozen drink, fresh pineapple instead of pineapple juice ? 1/4 xantham? Would love to know what you think
How could you not do the PKNY from Tropical Standard in this video? 😂 Disappointing 😂
“Patience is the best remedy for every trouble.”
In before the PKNY from Tropical Standard 😅
Great episode. I have been a big fan of the Soggy Dollar for years. Last October we went to the Soggy Dollar to have their version which was made with their original Soggy Dollar Dark and then lunch next door at Hendo's Hideaway for the Original Pusser's version. I liked both but noted that the Soggy version was lighter and that I could drink those all day long where as the Pusser's version was deeper and more complex like you had noted. It definitely tasted a little more heavier. Here is my video of the trip and at 3:53 you can see them making the Painkiller at Soggy. ua-cam.com/video/UT5DWjPG9g0/v-deo.html Thanks for this video.
Thanks for sharing! Cool to see them making it. I had only seen a big batch being made, probably what they then are pouring into the milk cartons.
Hi, hope I'm not ruining anything this time around 😜Anyway, I just plain hate the guts of that Tobias guy. While I do have a bottle of Pusser's Navy Strength (strictly for educational purposes) I wouldn't dream of endorsing that kind of ethics any further. As for the drink and playing around with it: just call it a "Cane Pillar" and do whatever TF you please 🥂
I'm trademarking "Make and Drink" in 3. 2. 1...
👍
What about acid adjusting to make it an actually balanced cocktail?
I've acid adjusted the "original" version I made here and didn't like it as much. Sometimes I'm cool with it not being "acid balanced."
But I'll feature some soon that are acid adjusted.
lol. went to high school with malcolm
Tell him they should have trademarked it with lime.
What would you do to improve it to your taste?
I like the original just fine and I tried acid adjusting it and still likes the original more
I didn't know that people had a strong preference against orange juice in cocktails. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that there is such a profound difference between fresh squeezed OJ and anything you can buy commercially? I'd imagine most followers of this channel are squeezing fresh, though.
The main argument against is that the flavor doesn't hold up so it mainly adds dilution as well as it's lack of acidity.
Several of the prominent Tiki figures are OJ haters.
@@makeanddrink I guess I was just surprised because it’s in so many tiki recipes! (Esp in the total tiki app). Thanks for the info.
I love the Painkiller but I never use Pusser's. I'll use whatever I like. Screw their BS
4 oz of Pineapple Juice is crazy...way too much. I always toned that down to like 1.5 oz Pineapple Juice
The trademark only protects the consumer if they are buying a branded, manufactured product. There is nothing about a trademark that prevents a bar from adulterating a trademarked drink.
The Painkiller bar saga kinda of proves otherwise. Likewise, if a bar or better yet a large chain restaurant advertised a Pinkiller or Dark N Stormy and stated they used another rum I would imagine they would have issues.
No one is complaining or railing against these brands because we can’t make our own ready to drink canned Painkiller.
This video upset me a little. You came across a little different.
Anyway, the og recipe blows. Way too much OJ.
The Pussers version is the best, but I personally back out 1 ounce pineapple for 1 more ounce of coconut cream.
Best one I've had in the Caribbean? St Maarten Yacht Club
Well I’m not here to defend Pusser’s.
And I greatly prefer the Soggy Dollar version I shared. I don’t think it blows.
@makeanddrink I guess I find it hard to believe. Nobody likes that much oj in their drink. I definitely prefer Pussers and always have it, just for this drink.
It's ok, I'll still watch your channel 😄 as I think you do a great job. I really appreciate the Columbia. State Park thingy... I lived in Calaveras for a while.
Cheers.
@chrisgeorge2717 ok but serious questions… how is 2 oz of orange juice and 1 of pineapple so much worse than 4 oz of pineapple and 1 of OJ? This is what I don’t understand.
Both fruit juices that lack acidity. Much more of it in the Pussers version.
@makeanddrink fair enough. I guess personally, I don't care for the oj that much at all. I'll squeeze a fresh 1 oz in, but again, I'm more about the cream of coconut. Why? I guess because I feel like in St Maarten, it was very rich and creamy.
4 oz of pineapple is probably too much too.. which is why I guess I reduce it and add more coconut.
I will never buy Pusser’s again, and you shouldn’t, either.
Great video! If you’re gonna do painkiller riffs, I would definitely recommend The Remedy from Existing Conditions. Punch has it on their website. It was one of my favorites to get before they closed.
looks pretty advanced, as usual.
@@makeanddrink 😁
