I agree. I'm really surprised at the quality of the video, reminds me of professional documentaries. To be honest, I thought this video would be just a person sharing their favorite drink recipe
This one might be your crowning achievement to date. The production is stellar, of course. But the heart of this video is the investigative journalism plus your talent for storytelling. You're challenging commonly accepted beliefs and not just adding to the tiki canon but advancing it. Just outstanding. Well done.
I’ve probably seen hundreds, if not thousands of cocktail videos over the years… this might be the best I’ve ever seen. In fact I’ve watched it twice tonight. Bravo. Keep up the amazing work. Cheers.
Jesus Christ! The production level of your videos is off the charts! I am here almost tearing up watching a video about a delicious cocktail. Thank you so much for sharing these high quality videos on a topic so menial as Tiki cocktails. This truly might be the new golden age of Tiki
This is such an amazing video. I've always been a space buff, and I love the research you've done to tie all of this to the Saturn cocktail. Thanks for making this and giving it such respect!
Gosh, even that transition from the portrait of Popo to Wondrich’s article is superb yet understated. It’s not just fancy high production going into this, it’s TASTE! 🏆
Great episode. I love this drink. Back in 1968 I visited Douglas Huntington Beach and saw one of the Saturn S-IVB stages being preflight tested. Perhaps it was the one that later sent Apollo 11 to the moon. Who knows? In any event, the Kona Kai was a Douglas hangout and the name of this drink based on that makes too much sense. Cheers.
Caught a glimpse of a modern smartwatch during the retro intro which totally ruined the entire channel and life for me. That's it I'm done! :D - - - awesome as usual Derek!
Incredible video! 1 super small note, you said at 15:34 that it appears in Beachbum Berry's Intoxica! but it actually appears in Beachbum Berry's Taboo Table. Definitely not a big deal, I just don't want anybody buying the wrong book for the recipe.
Ah man what's annoying is I checked the recipes from Beachbum sand I for sure saw the one Taboo Table and wrote down Intoxica. I always forget there's several recipes at the end of the book.
By far the most crowd pleasing, easy to make cocktail. Due to the shortage of Velvet Falernum in Europe, I like to use Benedictine to keep the mellow spices up. Derek pitching this one got me hyped up !
The Saturn is an absolute banger🗿💯 It's so easy to down 3 of these things. Great history lesson, too!👍 I had no idea the story behind this one was so deep..
If your production techniques get much better, you're going to need a mini series on Netflix. The Saturn was probably the first "tiki" drink I ever had with gin, and made me appreciate gin more. I don't know if you've ever made the Cobra's Fang on the channel, but maybe you could do a video or a series on the Cobra's Fang, the Sidewinder's Fang (from Smuggler's Cove), and the Golden Fang (from the Death & Co. book, "Welcome Home), which is a gin variation.
Derek, you are really on to something here man. This video and your “Three Dots and a Dash” video are two of the best cocktail videos I have ever seen. Cheers to you, my friend.
Amazing intro. I can't think of a cocktail channel that started with this quality and keeps upping the ante. These drink history videos are fantastic and I can't wait to see the next one that gets this same treatment. P.S. Saturn's are my favorite tiki drink. I love Rum, but something about this one just elevates even a basic Gin to a flavorful libation.
Great video. Great storytelling! Great info! Your channel is quickly becoming my absolute favorite tiki channel here on UA-cam. Keep up the awesome work! 😊😊
I'm using passion fruit syrup. I think it works just fine and don't think it comes across too sweet. There's at least 1 recipe from 1967 that calls for sweet & sour mix instead of lemon. And another that calls for 1 1/2 passion fruit syurp. The recipe in the video is the same as Beachbum, the glassware, and pretty much all modern takes and it's balanced to me.
Thanks for the tip, I always associated fruit nectar with the thick punch type stuff from Goya. It's usually fruit juice, water, corn syrup, some type of acid to balance it.
@@makeanddrinkI just made your exact recipe and used Real passion fruit and felt it was a little too sweet. I might try dropping that down to a 1/4oz next time. I also used Hendricks because I didn't have any London Dry available but I don't think that would account for the sweetness. Great cocktail none the less!
Holy production value Batman! Enjoy that you do the research, and put the time into the video. I really enjoy how you mix up the way you shoot and produce the videos. Keeps them fresh and its not all the same like many others on the tube. Thanks!
The Saturn is one of the best Gin Tikis ever, one of my personal top 10 list. BTW great video cut. One of the best cocktail channel intros of all time if not the best. If you did not know it’s for a cocktail one could think it’s mankind’s biggest announcement - e.g. the ultimate solution for the climate change😂
Fantastic video Derek. It’s my wife’s favourite cocktail and was great to get to know much more of the history. Thank you and keep up the amazing work with the channel. 👌
I watched this and immediately had to make it, used a fine Irish gin “ninth wave” which is 40% abv . I’m gonna give it a try with the export version which is 46% abv I find the cocktail fresh, light, citrus but with a perfect sweet balance, just delicious PS as everyone has said, the quality of your production is outstanding
This was an epic vid. I found that dailybeast article a couple years ago & it was excellent. You still have the most epic cocktail story to go someday. The M&D virtual clipper flight to Shepheard's Hotel (I know U will know the reference).
Thank you! Not sure if or when I'll go there. If the only thing to say is a the exact story verbatim from a Beachbum Berry book I'll leave that to others on UA-cam.
Made this at home and absolutely love it, thank you! only question I had was our cocktail is nowhere nearly as vibrant yellow in color as yours. Any tips on how what we might be able to do to make it more yellow in color? Thanks!
Hey Derek, any chance you could make a video on the Corn and Oil cocktail from Barbados? The history is vague, but the cocktail rivals even the best old fashion counterparts. Simple and elegant carribean! Thanks man, Cap'n Mark
Some cocktails don't have much info out there and I'm limited to what's available online or in books. Just works out that some drinks have more info available than others that is not as well known or just misrepresented. I think Corn 'n' Oil is just one of those that's harder to pin down exactly.
When you say the drink is only 3 1/4 oz, the total appears to be less. 1 1/4 oz gin, 1/4 oz falernum, 1/4 oz orgeat, 1/2 oz lemon, 1/2 oz passion fruit is only 2 3/4 oz, no? Edit: never mind- I see you have corrected this in the description.
You really have something special with this channel
Thank you!
Thanks Steven, appreciate it!
1000%
The most dramatic intro for a cocktail😂 I Love It!!!
all about that 🎭
And the Academy Award for the best documentary on a cocktail goes to…. Make & Drink for their History of the Saturn cocktail. yeesh. amazing
What an amazing tribute to a cocktail and it's creator, with a closing toast to the man himself. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
That opening was totally fire. This whole video is so well done. Congrats Derek!
I’ve probably seen hundreds, if not thousands of cocktail videos over the years… this might be the best I’ve ever seen. In fact I’ve watched it twice tonight. Bravo. Keep up the amazing work. Cheers.
Wow, thanks so much!
Same here. I’m watching it for the third time right now.
The Saturn will always be on my menu. Beautiful opening monologue.
i'm lost in the timeline
when those these Make and Drink's trailers became more exciting than MCU ones again ?
Found a whole new channel to binge through.
We stand in the presence of greatness, great video Derek.
Haha! Thank you! Do you have an "Ultimate Saturn?"
@@makeanddrink Can't top the original. I haven't experimented with a four Gin blend and doubt it'd be useful for this.
Wow! That was the most amazing intro to cocktail history I've ever seen! Excellent work!
thank you!
Jesus Christ! The production level of your videos is off the charts! I am here almost tearing up watching a video about a delicious cocktail. Thank you so much for sharing these high quality videos on a topic so menial as Tiki cocktails. This truly might be the new golden age of Tiki
Tremendous work!
Thank you
This is such an amazing video. I've always been a space buff, and I love the research you've done to tie all of this to the Saturn cocktail. Thanks for making this and giving it such respect!
Thank you!
I was always into space and NASA as a kid. Not sure if kids today are into it like we were in the 80s and 90s but very nostalgic.
Dang boy that opening was freaking Awesome! Love the little tv and everything! 👏
That intro was a BEAUTY!
Thank you for that level of attention to detail!
Glad you liked it!

wow papa that intro took us all on a ride, nice work! thanks for your awesome videos man
Caught a glimpse of a modern smartwatch during the retro intro which totally ruined the entire channel and life for me. That's it I'm done! :D - - - awesome as usual Derek!
It's a vintage apple watch!
This is some next-level work man. Setting a new bar for food and drink content on UA-cam.
Thank you!
Love the stock footage integration in this video!

Benedictine! Will have to try that
Interesting. Yeah, that does sound good!
The Saturn is my favorite tiki drink. Thanks for the information about it!
The Saturn is an absolute banger🗿💯
It's so easy to down 3 of these things.
Great history lesson, too!👍 I had no idea the story behind this one was so deep..
That intro! OMG. You make my life better! Seriously! Thanks so much for making videos like this!
Glad you enjoy it!
This is an awesome video.
bro you need way more views than you’re getting right now this is just great
thank you!
This was a really great video. Thanks for the history deep dive.
I’ve felt like i’ve been a subscriber from day one… This is not just one of your best, this may be one of the best cocktail videos ever 🙂↔️
Thanks so much, Dane!
Amazing. Please keep doing these mini documentaries, they are fantastic!
Thanks, will do!
This might be my favorite video you've ever done. I LOVE these drink histories. Amazing job!
Fantastic video, and glad I finally got to peek at your back bar, i've always been intrigued as to how much more it extended beyond your set.
The intro to this video is absolutely stunning. Love all the shots.
The production quality of this video is outstanding, as always. Kudos

Quite possibly the best video yet! Absolutely in love with this

Had my first and only Saturn at Lost Lake tiki bar before it closed down. Thanks for reviving that memory
Such a high quality video. Loved every second. Thank you for doing the research and putting this out!
Great video. Great storytelling! Great info! Your channel is quickly becoming my absolute favorite tiki channel here on UA-cam. Keep up the awesome work! 😊😊
Wow, thank you!
Your storytelling, cinematography, and editing is amazing. Are you using passion fruit syrup for passion fruit nectar?
I'm using passion fruit syrup. I think it works just fine and don't think it comes across too sweet.

@lokmtb8503 he was probably using a commercial product like Mynors at that time.
@@makeanddrinkI just made your exact recipe and used Real passion fruit and felt it was a little too sweet. I might try dropping that down to a 1/4oz next time. @SandstormGT Reál is also the sweetest of the commercial brands. I think it’s right around 60-66 Brix. Not huge difference but is sweeter.
I absolutely love this style of videos
Wow. I really enjoy your uploads. The production is really top-notch.
Some legitimate filmmaking with this one, especially that wonderful opening. Great job! And a nice tribute to one of my favorite drinks.
Super duper intro. Best I've seen. Great info on the early space program. Really enjoyed it. Watched it twice. Now going to make the drink too. Cheers
Man, I loved that opening!
Definitely your best video to date! Well done my friend, well done!
And the Academy Award for the best UA-cam non-feature length film cinematography goes to... you, Sir!

PS as everyone has said, the quality of your production is outstanding
Thanks so much!
That was amazing!
Loved it 👏👏👏
You’re giving Distinguished Spirits a run for his money. Excellent video.
Holy moly, just made this drink (but with Bombay because i didn't have Beefeater) and its Delicious! Cheers🍹
You’re absolutely crushing it. Hopefully the algorithm which catch on soon and in a big way

Getting artsy with it. I dig.
You didn't have to go that hard with the intro. But I'm glad you did :)
had to
What a lovely intro!
That was insanely good!
love this!

Where's Netflix to hire you for a cocktail's history series? Great intro!
I have a question about passionfruit in this recipie. Is it passionfruit nectar or syrup?
Nectar, but nectar has no defined legal definition for how much sugar is in it and we don’t know what brand of passion fruit he was using at the time.
@@makeanddrink thx
My favorite!
Dude! Make and Drink is not just another cocktail Tube.
Comment and like for the algorithm. The people must see this!
Derek went full documentarian... A video as nice as the drink it features.
Love the urban legend that the recipe was lost until it was found on a glass at a second hand store. BTW get video editing!!!
thank you!
My God, man do you know how to make an intro.. ❤
Fun fact from the intro, Stan freberg is the guy who suggested to George Lucas to cast Anthony Daniel's as c3po
Netflix soon
The Mosquito looks like it'd be awesome. I'm annoyed that I can't find proportions anywhere.
We can we get a full bar tour!
maybe one day!
