    Once i got over the gear selector being on the wrong side and the shift pattern being reversed i was amazed by how smooth the engine ran and it's truly amazing lack of power.
    I am glad i got to experience one BEFORE i thought i should own one.

    Nice to see these old bikes in such a good condition! Discussing the drawbacks of the square four construction, in an article it was mentioned that the conrod big ends were only supported on one side, which is a strange construction and of course a weakness. Not mentioned here, but wonder how many engines in percentage had problems with that construction?

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  3 місяці тому +1

      I am not to sure about the bigend only supported on one side, its supported on both sides on this model, maybe on the over head cam models.

    The inherent problem with this
    Engine Design is the 2 rear cylinders do not receive enough "cool" air . The heat from the front 2 cylinders draft back and prevent
    sufficient cooling .
    The rear cylinders always overheat and piston rings bind up then the engines seize.

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  9 місяців тому

      I've not come across any one i know had the rear cylinders seize, not to say it did't happen. The rear cylinders are bored with a bigger clearance in an attempt to elevate the problem. For sure on a hot day at a stand still its not a happy engine, but not a problem for me, i get something else out to ride😊😊 cheers YB

    I used to work with an old shoe repairer who had one of these when he was courting his missus. Had a chair on it and they went everywhere all over the place, he told me that at night you could see the rear pots glowing red they got that hot.
    Never sure if that was a bit of poetic licence though.

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  Рік тому

      The rear cylinders do run hotter, that run a litte extra clearance to cope with the heat. Mine an alloy engine so would not glow in the dark, if the iron engine did i would be surprised. Thanks, YB

      My mate has the iron engine one and he says it's smooth, mine seem's sooth to me ,but i've not ridden his. I've not managed to obtain a set of low comp pistons, so using pistons from a four piper, which wont help.

    building a hot spot into the head-casting was likely to cause trouble, and did. what were they thinking?
    still, when running, it was a smooth and compact engine.
    their first try was a water cooled 600, i think they should have stuck with it.

      It's best left in the garage on a hot day, it's a lovely bike to ride, the torque is massive for a bike of its age, no wounder most ended up with a sidecar.

  • @paulm749
    @paulm749 8 місяців тому

    From your explanation, I get the impression that the new stainless cylinder studs expand at a rate that's closer to that of the aluminum block's thermal expansion - is that correct? Your Ariel is a beautiful example.

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes that's correct, the 303 studs is much nearer than the R grade studs, most of the studs have a different torque because of the density of the aluminium. If think theirs an explanation on Dragonfly motorcycles web page, although i think that has been superseded by Bruce Longmans, who does the spares for the Ariel club who supply the otto head gaskets. Hope that helps Y/B

    I really enjoyed that video, and the bike, it sounds lovely. Was everything that Edward Turner designed a bit of a disaster ? Reading about him in the Triumph factory, if he designed something it had to be done again on the quiet, because he was such a tyrant. Pity he did not design an inline four, they were common enough in cars by then. An inline four of 600cc or 1,000cc and he would have beat the over heating issues and the Japanese by half a century !

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  2 роки тому +1

      Not sure Edward Turner was the only one, if you look at my Matchless silver hawk vid they were even worse. But the pinnacle of engineering in the 1930 I guess

    • @roeng1368
      @roeng1368 2 роки тому +2

      @@yorkshirebiker1293 Yeah, but i think Matchless were being ambitious with that design. People like Val page could get it right. Turner made everything flimsy.

    Nice bike!!! My brother has found himself in position of a 1950 that is a basket case. We need to know more about what is needed to fix the head gasket problem and oiling. What exactly was used and where to obtain the proper parts. I would appreciate any help you could be, thanks in advance.

    • @yorkshirebiker1293
      @yorkshirebiker1293  9 місяців тому +1

      The information on the cylinder head can be found on Dragonfly motorcycles web site. the Otto gaskets can be bought from the Arial owners club, Bruce Longman deals with the spates for the club and when you buy the gaskets he supply's a instruction sheet, explaining the problems with the head. the stainless studs for the head con be bought from acmestainless.co.uk i made my own from 303 stainless, If you read the recommended literature will explain why. I used a rotary Morgo oil pump, which i think was causing over oiling. Hope this helps if you were in England and i ad you number i could give you a ring and explain far better. YB

      If the sq4 is well sorted, it's a lovely bike, but be care full, as it's a four there's twice as much as a twin to pay for. As for the Sunbeam I've never owed one , but i under stand not all they are cracked up to be. But it's what you expectations is
