While I do like Sumire, I really think having her only be in the final Palace aside from small instances in the story here and there was a major disservice to her. On the other hand, I think Maruki and Akechi are Master class. Maruki says little things in his confidant that on rewatch are major red flags. But on your first playthrough, you might not even notice them. His confidant also ends on a mostly good but slightly open ended note. Making his eventual return as the Palace Ruler that much more impactful for me. Akechi is something special for me. I loved him back in P5 vanilla when he wasn't nearly as fleshed out as he is now. Then Royal came out. New confidant. Rivals. Themes. His rank 8. Loved it. I recently saw a comment somewhere saying that they should've switched when Akecho and Makoto joined. And I kinda see it. Have the Detective who is opposed to you join to fight against a greater threat, a mafia boss. And have Makoto join for her sister's Palace. That way, you can see Akechi slowly soften up to the group over the course of the game and make you wonder if he really is shady or if it's just your imagination. I understand that the betrayal aspect wasn't the big twist, but it still would've been nice to get a big reveal AND a twist that the Thieves knew all along. And having the traitor be someone who was only around for a single Palace definitely made that plotline kinda wonky. Even then, I still love him as a character for his new confidant and his involvement in the Royal stuff. My top three would probably be Akechi, Maruki, and Ryuji
Pretty goated list EXCEPT the Akechi take is a massive L in my book. He's easily one of the best characters in the game and is Top 3 material. His argument about the confidant laying his rivalry on thick is just looking at things on a serious surface level, there's SO much underlying subtlety and double meaning in seemingly nonchalant dialogue and it does a fantastic job really giving us a serious look into his mental state; despite how dedicated he is to his own ends and his inability to turn back he's also surprisingly self aware and regretful of his decisions and you can genuinely feel a part of him wishes he could just be your friend/friendly rival. I also don't think they needed to explore his situation with shido any further because you can very well extrapolate his headspace from the comments he makes and the hatred he felt, and the two of them never had a deeper relationship beyond using each other. Not to mention he helps carry SO much emotional weight in the 3rd semester and is canonically one of the most important people in joker's life to the extent that it was his greatest wish to bring him back. There's too many details to really mention about Akechi tbh, absolutely my favorite character in P5R 😤
While I personally would have placed Akechi just before maruki on the list you made, a lot of the stuff you placed is just overall good placements and you explained why fantastically
Mishima will forever be my favourite confidant. He has a believable character arc and having his big hero moment to rally the people in Tokyo behind the Phantom Thieves was so good. He's the only person who absolutely NEVER lost faith in them.

I unfortunately can't agree with everything on the list, but I absolutely have to agree with maruki's placement. I feel like he's the best writen characters in the entirety of royal and one of the best characters of the persona franchise in general. Dare I say, he's one of the best characters in all of fiction combined. I have no idea what kind of main antagonist they'll introduce in persona 6, but I highly doubt they'll ever surpass maruki. You would need one heck of a miracle for that to happen.
Finally! I have been waiting for this. Haru, Kawakami, Akechi, Joker, and Sojiro. Those are kind of my pick on the fly but i would have to think about it
Honestly Morganas confidant abillty, his infiltration tools where super useful to me. They made the optional new game plus super boss against the twins soooo much easier snd they where helpful in other parts of the game aswell. I only played vanilla P5 and not the Royal.
To me, not having Sae as an option such a wasted opportunity I know not a lot of people enjoyed Persona 5 the animation series. It's very choppy anyways you'll get to see what it would like if you got to date her . She's the type of person that will be there for you no matter what she's a ride or die type of partner that's the vibe I've gotten from her. She's beautiful, driven, smart, intense, ambitious, and motivated but if she loves you she would have a deep connection. Care about you deeply It's usually the ones who are cold Who present themselves that way. But if they're involved with someone who they really care about they will show a lot of their softer sides. She would be a lot more nurturing and it's a damn shame that you could not romance Sae. I would do it not to mention she's one of my video game crushes.
This was an interesting approach to ranking the confidants and it was interesting hearing what you got out of them. I'm not going to bother saying everything I saw differently, but I do want to point out that I did get really emotionally attached to Makoto, and while I also greatly appreciate Yusuke I didn't really use the card system very much. So both of them would be an S ranking for me were I following your rules.
Ryuji and Futaba are my personal favorite, I don't know where to start with these two, their personalities, story, skills, some personal stuff in my life... I like Morgana but I feel like he was missing a few scene or interaction outside of his confident with Joker, or even a showtime. Kind of a soft spot for Kawakami... she's pretty busted too.
Not too surprised by your choices and although I have a different favorites. This is your tier list and appreciate your explanations and reason for where you put who where. But I do agree Futuba is deserving of a strong character overall from the story she had gone thru a lot and had extreme character growth from when we first meet her to the end of the game and how much she has changed. Also Maruki is a great character and much deserving especially Billy Kametz for his performance as Maruki. He will forever be missed; May he Rest in Peace. For me personally my two favorites are Yoshizawa & Haru.
Makoto is a lawful good class rep turned Fist of the North Star-esque biker lady who smites her opponents with rage and nuclear power. Kinda sleeping on her presentation, one of the best imo.
I was surprised by his Makoto comments especially about presentation. She is the most competent, smart and reliable team member. Do you see some of the amazing jackets and dresses she wears? I can't fathom calling her bland when she clearly has the most well defined and classy sense of style in the group.
@@bakaoniichan193 her confidant is mainly about her friend and her relationship with her and she barely grows in it. As a character, she's pretty boring and her confidant did not help things in the slightest. The gap moe with her is pretty cute though, I'll give her that for sure.
@@Av-8008 for a child it must be hard to like the most mature character in the story. No wonder she ranks above all others in the list of popularity released by atlus, behind only the Joker.
@@Av-8008 I didn't like that she was that "perfect" person in everything except socially. Perfect grades, too mature, physically strong and knows self defence, stern and dominant, tactical knowledge. She doesn't feel like a teenage kid to me
I dont know if it is a hot take but Ryuji made me so fcking mad, he is really annoying in the story he has like 0 chill and he is always screaming and destroying the flow of the scenes
My main problem with him is him shouting “we’re the phantom thieves!” in public constantly non stop. It never amounted to anything much, but it’s really frustrating to hinge your story on a plot point you have no intention of putting effort into actually trying to keep a secret.
