Getting in his head about how he really feels after the events of P4 and that kinda tearjerking ending where he finally realizes that bonds are something we can't live without and it's really not so bad having friends is really heartwarming.
Probably has one of the best handled redemption arcs in a villian to date. The fact that the writers can even get you to feel a slight amount of empathy and pain for someone as cruel and evil as Adachi really shows how well written he is. Adachi isn't a flat 2D character. After all, that was apart of the rules of the game he played, and now he must abide by rules that are not his own.
My favorite part of the P4AU when he told Sho that he hates the entire world but he's not the brat like Sho is which indicates that Adachi still holds his view of nihlism in some form but he wouldn't want to drag people to his world view anymore.
@@TerminaBroTheFirst Yeah in fact he throws the exact same "little kid throwing a tantrum" insult that I believe Yukiko throws at Adachi in P4. He really has looked back on his actions and while he hasn't exactly lost his nihilistic world view, he certainly has changed quite a bit.

The most interesting thing about Adachi is that he not only is the antithesis to Yu Narukami and modern Persona, but the fact he also fits the theme of accepting yourself completely warts and all. Adachi knows exactly who he is. He's unashamedly himself and doesn't care. Even in Ultimax he owns up to who he is and wants to return quietly to jail. If Adachi didn't accept his ugly side he would've not awakened his Izanagi like Namatame did. It was an interesting spin on an accepting your true self. Because with characters like Kanji it's wholesome that he accepts his hidden side, with Adachi it's horrific. I completely agree that he's an incel. Before he did it out of boredom, the first 2 murders was because those girls didn't want him. And that's kinda terrifying to think about it. How self absorbed and entitled he is just because he worked hard he thinks the world owes him everything he wants. To some extent we can relate because many of us aren't talented and capitalism is unfair, but we must never become the Adachis that think the world owes us everything just because we weren't treated right. He weirdly kinda reminds me of Kaneshiro since they both had an unfair past then gained a cynical view of the world was a result. What a great character. Sometimes the memes ruin him for me and other days the memes make me love him more. Also we need Akechi and Adachi to meet in a non-canon spin-off for meme potential
@@ygr6484 As cool as that would be I would kinda get mad if they broke Adachi out of jail again just for DLC money 💀 Yet again my edgelord ass needs that interaction so I'd shill and still buy it
>if Adachi didn't accept his ugly side he would've not awakened his Izanagi like Namatame did I disagree there. Yu also never faced his shadow and managed to awaken his persona. Izanami's handshake essentially acted as a bypass for facing your shadow, with Namatame simply being consumed by normal shadows before having the chance to awaken his version of Izanagi Of course, that is just how I read the story and, even if he is my favorite character ever, do not deny that Adachi was a vile person and embraced that.
The thing that really scared me on my first playthrough of P4, when I was fresh out of high school way back in the day, was realizing that out of everyone in the game, Adachi was the character I most related to. The source of his evil is so mundane and understandable that I think a lot of people can relate. I really, really hated that being the case. It honestly got me to get my ass in gear and change myself as a person in some pretty big way, and it's the reason I still think of P4 as my favorite game ever - I think it honestly did inspire me to become a better, less Adachi-like person.
@@knightshade2654 That is fair. Izanami did give him a get out of Jail Free Card with the handshake. However I still believe Adachi accepts himself. He knows he's a cynical misanthrope who will never succeed in life and he embraces that darkness. It contrasts the other characters accepting their ugly side and becoming better people as a result. Adachi doubles down on his negative aspects then his eyes turn yellow and he summons Magatsu Izanagi. He even believes life would be easier if everyone accepted their Shadows/became Shadows. "You all saw Shadows as mere monsters, didn't you!? These things move on pure instinct! They go wild because you defy them! You annoying little brats are the ones who aren't wanted in the new world!" Adachi views Shadows as the rawest, purest, primal parts of people. The shadows aren't just the true self, they're the ugly hidden side. Adachi sees it as his only side and embraces it. Even if Izanami didn't give him an Izanagi I still think he would've awakened. He's too in touch with being a cynical misanthrope much like Akechi who awakened to Loki. He's not like the P5 villains like Kamoshida who hide their ugly side from themselves and think they're good people. Kamoshida would never admit he thought he was the King of The Castle who saw students as slaves, Kaneshiro would never admit he was just a pesky insecure fly who wanted money to be strong, etc. Adachi is fine admitting to himself he's a nihilist.
What I love about Maruki is his moral grayness; he's a kind, goofy dork who genuinely wants the best for you. And to get what's best for you, he will lie to you, abuse your trust, stalk you, electrocute you & rip your Persona out of you, and emotionally blackmail you- and he'll do it all with a smile on his face because he really believes he's helping you. That's a really compelling and terrifying antagonist.
It's kinda sad too. At his heart he has purely selfless intentions, but his way of carrying out it are so extreme. After all they do say that the path to hell is paved with good intentions.
The man allowed the abominaton and walking crime against humanity known as human morgana to exist and thusly derseevs to burn even lower in hell than shido.
Okay but Naoto's messages make sense, since she's part of law enforcement wanting to get information across as fast and simple as possible makes more sense then typing a full message with using lowercase letters on a flip phone where you had to click a button at most 8 times to get a letter you wanted
I know it's a really minor thing but during Junpei's persona awakening he blasts away Jin with a fire attack and that's awesome because in Gameplay Jin Repels fire. But that attack was so strong it caused a Gameplay and Story Segregation moment. And I always thought that was very cool.
"Nameless" needs more love. Poor dude is only seen in P1 playing the piano in the Velvet Room blind folded. Do you know how challenging it is to play the piano blindfolded!? That requires SO much skill and muscle memory!
I will say when Akechi became basically Vegeta in royal it made his character so much better and his ultimate awaking is legit one of the best moments in the series for me
I don't know why people like her that much tbh. I feel like a lot more could've been done with her. My point is, I think there are better characters in P2, like Tatsuya and Eikichi.
@@insertnamehere658To be fair, saying she isn't the best in Persona 2 isn't saying much. Even after playing every game except Q2 and the dancing games, I'd say Persona 2 has the best cast across both games
I love Ryuji so much, for a variety of reasons. But playing Royal for the first time now, and he immediately marks himself as someone special in the prologue. He’s willing to die in Kamoshida’s Palace to buy Joker time to escape. He’s just…such a sweet boy. Nobody I’d rather have as my right hand man.
Is it weird that when I first played Persona 4 as a highschooler, I related more to Dojima more than the rest of the cast? I wished I voted for him because I was pretty short sighted on persona characters back when I was voting
While she is not my favorite character, I always had a sense of deep care for Futaba due to how much she is like my little sister. My sister does not play many video games and mostly enjoys art and anime, but both have and had issues with self-isolation and intense social anxiety. It was nice to see how much my sister saw herself in Futaba, as well.
I have a friend who is damn near futaba's clone. She's like a little sister to me so when I first saw futaba it threw me off cause it was her but in video game form
It's very interesting to see how well-represented the persona 1 and 2 games were. This, and the fact that Aigis (who I think won the persona awards for most popular character?) only ranked top 5 really surprised me. Although, in hindsight, it was pretty clear who was going to be first place
I mean, if you are in a persona channel, you definitely is more likely to be aware and try the other persona games. Plus the SMT fans, all 6 of them (me included)

Western audience seem to tolerate Ryuji more. I, for one, cant stand him. Not because of his obviously teenagerish actions but because he is very forceful when making decision. Most of the times when Joker disagrees he berates Joker and move the conversation his way like he is the leader of the Phantom Theives. It is Atlus's fault for using him as a narrative device, but it does bother me nonetheless.
As a female Yosuke fan, I can confirm. He is my favourite and always will be. It's hard to explain but smth about Yosuke is just so sweet. He is super funny as well. Also, the dancing game got him even more fans(and I don't blame anyone here)
As a male Yosuke Fan, I just think it's very charming seeing him trying so hard to do cool things, and him trying to keep a cool and captivating persona!(pun totally intended)
I am not a female but Yosuke is really awesome. He is the only character in the series to feel like protag's bestie. When he shout "distance doesn't matter to us" I always sob.
Yo shoutout to the other 9 Kuon Ichinose votes... I can't believe there were any other Kuon Ichinose votes. I'll also say that having characters like Junko Kurosu and Kinshiro Morooka with just 1 vote, I think speaks to the quality of a lot of Persona characters. This list is really surprising, mostly in the low and lower-middle placements. I feel like the top rankers were all easy to guess, especially Adachi placing where he did. Most importantly Fither, PLEASE DO A MOST HATED CHARACTER LIST.
I'm so happy of my man Kanji to have almost won. I thought he was gonna be like top 20 maybe as I honest don't see that many people talk about him too much but a silver medal is more than enough for him. He's my favourite persona character for many reasons one of them being I'm into craft work like that myself. I have others but I'm not going to go into a super long story or whatever. I just love Kanji man
About the whole “introducing new characters in the remake thing” when I thought Sumire’s implementation was too much in the intro and was pretty cool with maruki’s. I personally thought the implementation was pretty obvious but when my friend blind-played P5R they straight up could not tell what was new and what wasn’t. They were genuinely surprised when I told them Katsumi was new.
Maruki isnt just one of the best antagonist but he is one of the best protagonist in his own right when you truly view the story from his perspective, truly a gentle madman of compassion. Also RIP to Billy Kametz english VA of Maruki.
If your going to talk about Persona villians, I have a lot of thoughts on the Masked Circle. In my eyes they're probably the most underutilized group of persona villians, in terms of the fact that half of them never actually get relevance outside of their fights, in spite of very interesting concepts. The only ones given any real depth outside of Jun himself are Anna and Soudo, who like Anna's cool but Soudo is, Soudo's writing is not something I'm getting into. This hurts really badly with Junko who just shows up, decides that she's completed her character arc, then dies. A lot of the Masked Circle have really interesting concepts and have really diverse designs and personalities. Hiroki's got this massive grudge against one of the protagonists and a lot of deep seated issues, Ixquic's a naive kid surrounded by villians, Yasou is technically the main bad guy for the first fourth of the game, Hannya looks really really cool. they deserve a spin off game man.

People forget that adachi isn’t actually allowed a gun since its slightly implied he misfired a gun and thats when he was relocated to inaba. The gun he does have is possibly built by him, maybe using parts from other confiscated guns. Thats my guess.
Kanji was only 12 points away from Adachi. That’s shocking to me but as someone who’s played Persona 4 very recently I’m very happy since he may be my new favorite Persona character
Though part of me wanted to vote for some of the funny men like Adachi, I just had to give one of my votes to the Persona 1 Drugstore Pharmacist. So sad to see only I feel that way 😭
I went into p5r completely blind about everything and I agree that Maruki fits into the game seamlessly. I had no idea he was an addition to the game until it was revealed he was the main villain of the third semester.
I feel some people are more “territorial” with their favorite girls because of the whole “waifu wars” nonsense which is why the top 10 is primarily male characters Really interesting list to see, I wonder how the list would differ if someone of a similar size also did the same poll with a similar sample size
Did anybody else know Adachi was gonna be the villain when they heard his voice and made the connection that P3MC and Ryoji had the same voice actor so Narukami and Adachi will probably have a similar relationship?
Honestly most players dont pay attention to Narukamis voice so probably not. He barely speaks in the game and I didn't look up voice actors before hand.
in the original persona 4, i was kind of indifferent towards adachi. a lot of the things he's supposed to represent about the story aren't seen until the end of the game. in golden, i think his social link did a lot for him. not anywhere close to being my favorite, but he alright.
Isn't his social link like the best one ever? It clearly left some kind of impact if the pink alligator was referenced in Kanji's and oddly Adachi's social links. Guess he's just overshadowed by main characters.
I'm so surprised people don't remember Hisano that much, out of all the P4 social links her's feels the most bittersweet and really stuck with me after playing the game. Idk, I'm not surprised P5 social links were generally popular because P5 fans gonna P5.
29:29 IDK, for me part of it is just that it's nice to play a persona game as a girl, I guess. I think that's part of the reason why I like her and Maya so much (you know, besides the fact that Maya is Maya. Everybody loves Maya.) I don't mind playing as a boy, but there's something nice about playing someone who is the same gender as you if that makes sense. The fact that she's also a different character than her make counterpart with different social links and dialogue options is just the icing on the cake.
Somthing really interesting about Maruki's story about him and his fiance was that she was attacked during a BURGLARY by an intruder "AKA A THEIF" and yet despite all that he is still supportive of the phantom thieves actions (until the fourth semester of course). Further showing how tolerant and based Maruki is as a character (also adding more to the pain of the fist fight scene at the end T_T )
HOOOOOLLLLY SHIT! I didn’t even realize that parallel!!! I know there’s other details in the game that show off how kind Maruki is but goddamn I never even connected how he would have a reason to be very distrustful of the Phantom Thieves and instead is supportive and open.
Even in the third (yes it is third not fourth) semester he is supportive of Joker and the thieves' choice to change his heart. He could have blocked them off from even entering his palace but he let them change his heart. He truly only wants whats the best for people
We know Narukami is definitely among the most popular, with his anime being considered the best work A1 has done, his character and regular appearance in spinoffs, the memes, and probably an underestimated fact, he is in BlazBlue CrossTag Battle, so a lot of fans of BlazBlue, UnderNight, RWBY, and the other franchises possibly had Narukami be their first exposure to the series as a whole and an anime fighting game probably has more fans of anime than an anime fighting game people try to call not anime since some of the characters are either too realistic or too cartoony regardless of them being actually Japanese-made characters
"I don't agree with [Akechi's] placement because he's still kinda a mess..." I honestly think that's also part of the appeal. He's so MESSY, it gives a lot of space to really dive into character traits and elements of the human experience that persona characters don't usually touch. Plus it's just interesting to see how he became the mess he is and what he could/could have become (depending on your interpretation of the ending) in the aftermath, because ffs he's EIGHTEEN, he had/has his whole life ahead of him, there's so much room for him to grow (or not, which I think people also find interesting)
I mean Chie mentions watching something about the Kuzunohas and that Naoto reminded her of that so Raidou counts, also there is the timeline stuff but I won't get into that
45:09 Even before I knew much about Persona, I knew that there was this green-clad girl with a short haircut who was said to be the quintessential tomboy. Some things never change.
Yukari is easily my favourite character in the entire series, she’s so likeable and I love her romance with the MC. She’s also the only girl in Persona that I related to a lot
The one negative thing I will say for Joker and Akechi's "Rivalry" is that it always felt like a one-sided rivalry due to the nature of the MC. Akechi is constantly always going on about how you are his rival and depending on your dialogue choices you can essentially never have Joker ever admit they are rivals.
While I understand a demographic as specific as a youtuber's audience being polled can really skew the results (especially with the factors mentioned in the video), but it's still fucking hilarious seeing Adachi come out on top lmao

They will meet my friend. In a CANON spin-off, my guess would be Persona 5 Arena
@@ygr6484 As cool as that would be I would kinda get mad if they broke Adachi out of jail again just for DLC money 💀
Yet again my edgelord ass needs that interaction so I'd shill and still buy it
>if Adachi didn't accept his ugly side he would've not awakened his Izanagi like Namatame did
I disagree there. Yu also never faced his shadow and managed to awaken his persona. Izanami's handshake essentially acted as a bypass for facing your shadow, with Namatame simply being consumed by normal shadows before having the chance to awaken his version of Izanagi
Of course, that is just how I read the story and, even if he is my favorite character ever, do not deny that Adachi was a vile person and embraced that.
You annoying little brats are the ones who aren't wanted in the new world!"
Adachi views Shadows as the rawest, purest, primal parts of people.
I believe you mean aizen lmao
The most terrifying antagonists are the ones who 100% believe they're doing the right thing. Makishima from Psycho Pass comes to mind

I know it's a really minor thing but during Junpei's persona awakening he blasts away Jin with a fire attack and that's awesome because in Gameplay Jin Repels fire.
But that attack was so strong it caused a Gameplay and Story Segregation moment.

He’s willing to die in Kamoshida’s Palace to buy Joker time to escape. He’s just…such a sweet boy. Nobody I’d rather have as my right hand man.

It's rather interesting that the best freind bro characters have a large mainly female audiance. I thought I was the only one honestly.
Kanji rules as a character tbh. His social link's in the running for the best in the series, with my man Akinari.

About the whole “introducing new characters in the remake thing” when I thought Sumire’s implementation was too much in the intro and was pretty cool with maruki’s.
Agreed

Kanji's conversation with Ken in Persona Q is one of my favorite moments in the entire franchise. Kanji is just flat out perfection
The fact Ken saw him as a father figure than a brother figure will not floor me.
I feel some people are more “territorial” with their favorite girls because of the whole “waifu wars” nonsense which is why the top 10 is primarily male characters
Really interesting list to see, I wonder how the list would differ if someone of a similar size also did the same poll with a similar sample size
Did anybody else know Adachi was gonna be the villain when they heard his voice and made the connection that P3MC and Ryoji had the same voice actor so Narukami and Adachi will probably have a similar relationship?

29:29 IDK, for me part of it is just that it's nice to play a persona game as a girl, I guess. I think that's part of the reason why I like her and Maya so much (you know, besides the fact that Maya is Maya. Everybody loves Maya.) I don't mind playing as a boy, but there's something nice about playing someone who is the same gender as you if that makes sense.
