there’s something tragically poetic about all the original comments being erased, a decade of umineko fans giving their closing remarks on a series that for many of us changed our lives and is our favorite piece of fiction, all of it gone. just like the story of rokenjima the stories of all those people are now at the bottom of the ocean locked away in the catbox never to be seen again.

Oh you're right. I just saw it as sad like the way Higurashi got so popular and started raking in money so it keeps getting rewritten over and over to add more and more to what was actually a completed story. To me Umineko losing its past seems similar. However, you're right. Regardless of how you look at it, the metaphor is perfect. More and more is added, but the true past is gone forever, unknown. Whether for better or for worse the past is changed by our perceptions.

I finished Umineko on May 30th 2020, and the ending lived rent free in my mind ever since.
There's something about the fact that Ange created a kind environment for orphans like herself, and recreating Beatrice's painting as the core of the room, so that Beatrice's existence continues to be remembered and in fond memories. And the fact that Battler could not rest in peace until he saw Ange happy, and most importantly, until he saw Beatrice again. It's all he ever needed, and it's the only things that made him fight for his life, it's his love for Beatrice, and his love for Ange.
Although the story at first disguises itself as cruel story about insufferable rich people, the story slowly delves deeper into their humanity, and that they're just victims from the start, victims that had no love left in their heart.
Episode 4 and 8 are the ones that struck deepest in my heart. Episode 4 revealed so much about Rosa and Maria. To me, it felt like Rosa's self loathing caused her to put her trauma in Maria, but Rosa loved Maria and was aware of what she was doing, so she tried as much as she can to stay away from Maria, and sleep with men as awful as her to validate her self-loathing. She didn't trust anyone at all and she viewed everyone as an enemy, she thought that locking Maria in the house with her beloved dolls was the only way for Maria to not grow up to become like her, or for Maria to live a happy life. And at the moment where Rosa tore off Sakutarou which made Maria snap, all the hope that Rosa had in herself was vanished, Maria was the only one keeping her hope in herself alive. Rosa snapped back at her in purgatorio and kept taunting Maria to torture her, because Rosa thought that's what she deserved, and what would give Maria peace of mind.
Ange and Eva's relationship was one of my favorites of all time, I love how despite all the hurt and loneliness Eva felt, especially with Ange pushing her hatred towards her, Eva wanted to protect Ange until the end, she did everything to protect her, and even in death, she continues to protect Ange.....she really loved her, from the bottom of her heart.
And the parallel between Ange and Beatrice was amazing, Beatrice gave up and cursed her fate, so she decided to leave everything to fate and stop trying to make a change. Ange was the same, until the last moment, where she stood up and decided to live for herself and everyone else, she found happiness in making the world a better place.
Natsuhi is such an amazing character as well, in episode 5, it made her actions in episode 1 much more meaningful, she wanted to protect the children as much as she could even if she had to become a demon, so she can "redeem" herself from pushing Sayo over the cliff, in a way it was her chance to become a good mother. And by the end of episode 1, she seemingly killed herself for both Sayo and Jessica's sake. And in episode 5, it felt like it was a way to show Natsuhi's utter loneliness, by killing off the people that will be on her side no matter what: Jessica and Krauss. But maybe Natsuhi was always lonely, and the moment she was forced to confess her sin.....she became free. she's an incredibly complicated character.
Also, the halloween theme being consistent with the message of the story was so well-written. Halloween is the time where the gap between the live and dead is thin, that was the case for Battler and Ange. Battler was dead, but he kept fighting back like a phoenix inside Tohya's body. Ange was alive, but she kept fighting for a reason to justify her reason to die. At the end, the gap between the life and death closed, Ange found beauty in life, and Battler accepted his death and reunited with everyone.
A story of this significance is so difficult to describe with words, the emotions it made all the fans including myself feel is irreplaceable and united, it's a kind story that believes in everyone's future.
Obviously alot of characters are not meant to be forgiven, but merely understood. My favorite characters are: Ange, Eva, Maria, Lambda, Natsuhi, and Battler.
To anyone who read this, who is your favorite character? and why?

nice writeup, imo is beatrice the best character is pretty obvious, great backstory, iconic moments, iconic character design, her relation with battler is great, and like at first glance beato is the main antagonist at the early episodes, but the more you progress, you feel there is something wrong with beato, her story is so tragic, but i am happy that she found peace with battler in the afterlife, also beato and battler is a really great couple very well written, without feeling too cringe.

@@tecmangames69 Welcome new Umineko finisher! This is definitely a story I will never forget, I cried so much at the end as well.... Battler and Beatrice are geniunely one of the few couples I'm obsessed with, their love for each other is so sincere, and the ending was what made their love feel like something indescribable with words alone and is something that you can only truly feel after the journey. Although everyone has their own interpretations of the story, there's no denying how much Battler loved Beatrice....
Imo, even though Bern said that "this game will not have a happy ending", it felt like a happy ending to me. Ange lived happily and shared her happiness with people to make the world a better place, Battler rested in peace with his loved ones....
That red truth was so perfect because it proved that everyone has their own truth and can interpret things differently... This is such an amazing story.

@@wolfganggrimmer6120 is happy ending, but more an bittersweet one, the ushiromiyas except battler are dead, but ange accepted that, and moved on but she was always believed that someone could come back, and batter returned, and in the ending battler finnaly found peace, even though is in the afterlife, after all that tragedy the ushiromiyas, and definitely sayo and battler deserved that, amazing ending, umineko story is great, there are a lot of interpretations of the ending, and i even not found mine lol, but i like a lot the theory that ikuki is sayo.

Honestly, Rosa's story just shows how parents don't become "real adults" with the snap of a finger right after having children. She was unable to overcome her traumas and placed this responsibility on a man, hoping that she could become a good wife. And when she was left alone, with only a reminder of her "mistake" next to her, she began to take her anger and despair out on Maria. I don’t justify her, and Maria’s words about how her mother is being possessed by an evil witch broke my heart; like all children, she wanted to love her to the end and made excuses for her horrible mother. But their story raises an interesting topic, how mistakes in upbringing are passed down through generations. Rosa should take magnesium and restore her nervous system, because the impulsive desire to show violence is not so rare in people, but you cannot allow yourself to embody it

    • @wolfganggrimmer6120
      @wolfganggrimmer6120 6 місяців тому +1

@@jdhdjdjeodkfjek6921 I'm personally on the side where Rosa genuinely loves Maria, but is unable to control herself due to her insecurities, trauma, and self-loathing. I don't think she means it when she says that Maria is a mistake, she's possibly giving herself reasons that her husband left her because of Maria, and not because of her own self. The last scene of episode 2 and one of the scenes in episode 8 where Rosa snaps when someone tries to hurt Maria, whether it's goats or Erika, and her distrust towards people Maria interacts with during episode 4, and at every scene where Rosa gets worried over Maria when she's on the rain.....Some people justify it as a sense of responsibility that Rosa is trying to inhabit but that really doesn't make sense in my opinion; considering how Rosa's hatred is mostly directed towards herself, and she's trying the best she can to be with people that don't give her the hope of being loved.

As the original is gone, I will rewrite my old comment:
Finished 05/08/2022 - Umineko is the epidemy of a masterfully written story that touched my very soul and resonated with me on such a deep level. This piece covered the most unique themes in the most unique way possible. I will never ever experience such a masterpiece again. From the plot, dialogue, characters, CG's and music everything was masterful. Even if the journey took me over 150 hours it was well worth it. The last episode, Twilight of the Golden Witch was a perfect conclusion with every piece coming together. Umineko is one of the series that peaks and dominates any genre it covers, be it mystery, phantasy or romance. This is truly one of the peaks of peaks I have read. Thank you Ryukishi07, for creating this tale, a small and fragile tale… Of the deepest depths of the darkest shadow, where a faintly glowing golden rose rests.

I took "Lambda" as my nickname back in around 2010 or so, after watching the anime adaptation. It took me so very many years to pick up the original Visual Novel do to me just being a god-awful reader. In 2022 I finally picked it up, and finished it at the summer of 2023. I picked up the manga adaptation on the SAME DAY I watched the end credits of the Visual Novel.
Never has a work quite struck within me like Umineko did, and I can say that I picked my nickname well, even based on my image of Lambdadelta from the anime alone. Although there was one character that I resonated with so deeply that it really shook me to my very core, and while I can't speak their name, I'm pretty sure that people know based on the fact alone that I will not speak their name.
Umineko can be enjoyed as it is, but for me it taught me so much about perception, assumptions, communication, and how "truth" even works. I feel like the work has so many very reasonable points to consider and take into oneself to learn from, to grow from. I know it's tacky and clichéd, but Umineko changed me as a person, in so many ways.

Given the fact that I am posting this on April 16, 2024, I think it's pretty clear the effect this game has had on me lol. Reading Umineko was honestly a trial for me. I am a pretty poor reader, so it was difficult for me to comprehend what was going on sometimes, so I had mixed feelings about certain plot points, especially by the end. But, now that I am currently experiencing the series again through the manga, everything is now clicking into place. This game is a true masterpiece, telling a great story about love and understanding by challenging the reader to comprehend the mystery and its characters. I find myself thinking about Umineko everyday, and have even made good friends through Umineko discussions, even making a friend offline at a convention where I cosplayed Battler. Umineko means a whole lot to me, and I hope that others get to experience this life-changing game.

Where do I start? at first I thought all the hype sorrounding this series was a complete joke a way for the fanbase to make themselves look like superior beings living in a different plane. But oh boy, now that Ive actually had the chance to finish this story I can now affirm that they were simply just being honest and so I'm speechless. If I could describe what I am feeling right now in one word it would be "fullfilled". "Watashi wa dare?" It is as if I've grasped the answer to this question for myself and have finally understood my purpose in this world, the fact that I've achieved this makes me feel quite happy. Umineko is a story like no other a masterpiece would not be enough to describe a series like this. All I can say is that every hour that I've put in this story was worth it and if you ask me If I would do it again, the answer is yes and thats in red. I will miss you for as long as I live, my beloved witch, Beatrice.

What has this monster of a story has done to me! I can no longer enjoy any other stories that much... it made me realize Umineko really should be preserved and be studied in the fictional word or something. Easily one of the greatest stories to grace the Earth. Despite what you might think about the prose, or the story being bloated at times Umineko is a story that really explores human perception, truth and love in a way that very few stories ever have.

Reading everyone's comments made me want to write my own. Words cannot fully describe how much Umineko has impacted me and changed my view of myself and the world around me. It's the only series I can say with full confidence that it genuinely changed my life. I always have to tell people that and clarify that I'm not overexaggerating lol.
I find myself relating to Beatrice and Ange a lot, which makes the story hit very hard for me, considering everything. Among many things, one of the things that hits me the most is how they use escapism and delusion to transform the cruel world around them into something they can live and cope with. I don't see this explored a lot, and especially Ange's "imaginary friends" of the Seven Stakes was really refreshing to see, because it's not often that you see teens or adults in series having them. It's something that hits close to home, as growing up I suffered a similar type of loneliness that Beatrice and Ange did.
I think what is impactful though is the parallel between the two. Beatrice wanted to live, experience love, and become a true "person", but ultimately gave herself up to her fate and lost her life. Meanwhile, Ange wanted to give her life up, but ultimately found meaning for herself and truly began to live. I do often find myself at both sides of those kinds of feelings, but ultimately I do want to live, which is why Ange's story is so inspiring, and Beatrice's story is so incredibly tragic I can't help but tear up or cry anytime I listen to this song.
Thank you Ryukishi for making such an amazing work of fiction that has changed my life for the better. I don't know where I'd be right now if not for Umineko, it has helped me come to terms with a lot of aspects of myself I would shy away from and push away, but now I healthily embrace them and am working towards finding that meaning in my life.
Rest in peace, my beloved witch, Beatrice. I will never forget your tale as long as I live.

I've took a really big breaks from reading this novel, my first rush throung it was in a ~may 2023, i've literally speedrunned through first 3 episodes just because it was a really interesting to read! I've took a really big break (around 4-5 months) dropping the novel in the middle of the 6th episode and kinda regret it, because i think that my thoughts could got blurried a bit, but overall it doesn't affect the thoughts about the whole novel. I don't even think any other visual novel could even compete with Umineko in term of sending a message this deep. Of course, i like VN's i've read, but they're, just, feeling really different? Most of them telling an interesting story (Fate, for example), but Umineko feels not just about the plot..? I've cried (from what i can remember) in the end of the Arcueid route of Tsukihime, but my tears in the end of Umineko feels so special? I mean, i understand that Ange couldn't became a witch literally, but she really become one. I think if i was younger (i'm in a mid-20's) - i could take the main message of this novel incorrectly because of my small life experience, but now i think i can truly engrave it on my heart. Seeing all the fan content/memes at the top really makes fun, but at the bottom we all relieved the similar experience after finishing the novel, and that's what warms my heart. Cheers to everyone who've read my message, i like you! And remember - without love it cannot be seen.

VN: 5-6 years ago. Manga: 10/08/2023.
At the beginning of this year, after getting my heart broken, for some reason I decided to give the manga a try. Used the sound manga app to make my experience closer to the VN and things that didn't hit close home on my VN read, they did whenever I was reading the manga (Maria's story, for instance, Ange's story aswell).
I'm grateful to this story for teaching me the definition of magic, for teaching me to look forward, for teaching me to forgive, for teaching me to change my perspective and to have a warm heart towards the people I care about and try to be more understanding to those who are not that close. Thank you Ryukishi for this wonderful story. Thanks to the translators for taking their time and efforts into bringing to us this wonderful and beautiful story.
In Spanish the verb to remember translates to "recordar" (Ricordare in Italian) which from a etymological perspective means to pass through the heart once again. Therefore:
May this story not dwell in the depths of oblivion but rather in the depths of my heart.
Descansa en paz, mi amada bruja, Beatrice.

Would have finished days earlier if I didn't have a crippling hoi4 addiction (even though reading umineko is much, much more enjoyable than playing hoi4, but I'm pretty sure that's how addictions are.)
Umineko secured third spot in my fiction list. And I just started higurashi when they cry. Would already be amazing if it was half as good as umineko.
edit: I just noticed that the song doesn't only play in the ???? credits. but also when battler sinks. I'm pretty sure it glitched out the first time. But I'm pretty sure there was some kind of track playing in the background still. I don't really remember.
edit2: I love Umineko more than I can bear. Seriously.
edit3: 4 months later and I decided to take a listen to this again. Still very emotional but not as much as it used to be. I guess I'm starting to get over umi or something (haha, it's been 4 months, thank god i'm starting to get over it, that's the longest I've been obssessed over fiction)

It's funny, I've never cried this much while reading a story before. Weirdly, I didn't get that "empty" feeling I would normally get after finishing a good story either. It's such a tragically beautiful story with so many good messages. It doesn't shy away from tough topics, it doesn't include symbolism and philosophical discussions just to seem 'deep'. Umineko is the greatest love story, mystery, fantasy and tragedy I've ever read in my life and it will always have a special place in my heart.
