  • This is a good playful ear-training exercise and it also helps to visualize the bass guitar's fretboard while singing the notes. The more you sing and visualize, the better you will become at learning the melodies or the bass lines by ear.

I understand the discussion about 2nd not being perfect, however, it might be confusing for a kid, who's just learning the theory and barely understands the difference between minor and major scales. I think for Ellen that's a bit more advanced for now and not really important if you will. As long as she understands its functionality, I'm happy with it. In C major scale the 2nd is D, in C minor the 2nd is still D, which means in either scale the 2nd doesn't change, it remains the same. So it's better to explain that in these scales the 2nd is perfect, rather than say it's major 2nd, but the scale is minor. It might be confusing. I understand that this is not a common opinion, but this is how I see it. The only steps that change in natural minor and major scales are the 3rd, 6th, and 7th. So it doesn't really matter what we call it now, once we start learning the modes, then I can explain that in certain modes the 2nd is minor and in some it's major. Hope this makes sense.

Really? What's hard about it? The first thing I thought when watching this is "Why have you taught her the second is a perfect interval?" You can play it out loud and hear it isn't perfect! You can look it up online where resources will tell you it isn't perfect. You also hesitated on 8th. The 8th and first are both perfect intervals. You may say "technically" as they are the same note but they are Still perfect and you Might play a unison on two different instruments so it does make sense even to call unison a perfect interval.
From your answer you don't appear even to understand what a perfect interval Means! It doesn't make any different in what scales they are the same note. Intervals are perfect because of how they sound in a chord. They are perfect because the frequencies are low-integer ratios of each other.
I don't know what it is but when you recorded this you appear to have confused the Major second interval of a major chord for a perfect interval, which it it not.

Sir, you are teaching Ellen to be a musical genius. She is so fortunate to have you and you are lucky to have her. The fact that she witnesses the love and pleasure you have in music has made it possible to have it faithfully passed on to her. A father who loves his daughter so much becomes the beacon she can follow to her best self. As the son of two incredible teachers, and a corporate trainer myself, I admire your technique and positive reenforcement. The fact that she smiles so sincerely through her lesson is testimony to not only your skillset in teaching, but of the incredible father-daughter love you both hold for each other. If only more fathers were as caring and patient as you, we would be a far better world.

wow, great concentration Ellen. I have a great ear, but your dad made it tough by playing solid instead of broken. I've never really tried that before. I love how you work it out by singing, I'm too shy and sing the scales silently in my head. And what stamina you show; I was ready for a break while you kept on going strong. Thank you for sharing, it was fun to play along. major sevenths are such strange beasts. :) I liked the octave approach you came up with. I never thought of doing that. Bravo

As I commented on another of your videos earlier today, I'm a 58 year old who plays bass professionally in several bands. I only started getting serious about learning bass about 10 years ago but have been playing guitar since age 13 and performing as a singer/guitarist since my early 20's. I was self taught at first but in my mid 20's I went back to university and earned a Bachelor's Degree in classical guitar. Novak is a fantastic teacher - I can't imagine how wonderful it would have been for me if I had a Dad like that to teach me like this so early in life! Ellen is already amazing and will only get better and better. (I always struggled with major and minor 7ths in ear training classes, too. I think it is because I always found it to be odd that the major seventh sounds so dissonant when played with the root, while a root and minor seventh were so much more pleasing to the ear.) I'm currently revisiting all of this theory myself and trying to take my playing up a level, as it is very easy to fall into just learning specific bass lines and playing by muscle memory, instead of thoughtfully applying theory in the practice room daily so that you really understand what notes and intervals you are playing at all times. This kind of work not only makes it so that you can play what your "hear" in your mind while improvising - it keeps the nerves away so that you can recover quickly when you are in a performance situation and have the inevitable drop in concentration or something and make a mistake. I just want to say that I think this is great. (And following along with her lesson gave me more of a workout than I usually have gotten when tuning into adults giving lessons on UA-cam channels.). Way to go, you two!

Ellen, you are a ROCK STAR darlin'! Please don't ever put it down like I did my 6 string back in the early 1990's (yes I'm ancient to you lol). I've found that it is not like riding a bike, you will loose your dexterity and skill if you don't keep it up. I have a daughter myself, so young women like yourself have always been able to melt my heart, but I want you to know you can be and do ANYTHING you put your mind to in life. Don't be afraid to go for your dreams and reach for the stars, you may even amaze yourself with how far you get with that attitude. I'm sure you will do wonderful and amazing things with your life. While I totally expect to hear the headline one day
"Rock Star, Astronaut, Lawyer, Governor, Egyptologist and Research Scientist "Ellen" cures cancer while discovering long lost and fully intact tomb or the great pharaoh Egypt ever knew, all while on break from land mark court case shortly after returning from space, where she ran the state of Nevada, ran her 4th reelection campaign, and won again all in her down time of piloting NASA and Space X's new faster than the speed of light space craft that she invented, this during the recording of her 11th solo album "It's funner playing Music Man basses in baby blue in space" all while her successful career as the front woman/song writer/vocalist/bassist/producer of the greatest Trash metal band since Metallica willing retired in tears after hearing her play for the first time. "It was pointless to even try to compete and release anything with someone like her in the music world, we just wish people would download our music illegally again so we knew anyone still listened to it" said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Ellen was quoted later as saying " I wish they wouldn't have called it quits, I still need an opening act you know"."
Seriously young lady, don't stop learning, ever, in all things in life. Everything you gather unto you now, no matter how small, will only help to strengthen the foundation your parents have, and will continue to, put into your life. I know this all sounds so serious, but I believe that the world can be cruel to females from little girl to an elderly woman. They already know deep inside that they are capable of so much. I feel that they would be unstoppable if given the support they deserve along the way, and you my dear deserve it. You have a fan and subscriber in this old man from the mountains of Tennessee. Yeah, okay, so some of it is that you can out play me on bass and your Stingray is hands down the coolest looking bass on UA-cam (way cooler than my all black one). I can admit that lol.

There are certain sounds that are heard with a musical aspect, while there are also sounds heard, that are either based on spoken words, or the usual sounds you can hear in the background..... If you compare them to other usual 'sound' you hear, you find that they can be complicated to describe, in terms of how one note and another in a musical scale correlate.... If you consider pitch, or volume, or the treble/bass, you will find that it takes a very intelligent approach to understand music, and- certain guitarists or bassists were also vocalists.... It takes a careful comparison of notes/sounds to establish the exact difference or type of intervals.... Really, it takes quite a genius to work it out.......

It get's to a point where as you get used to shapes, etc, that you can almost be ready to play it right the first try. You can get better without actually having the axe in hand, after a certain point, of course.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I know that the seconds are not considered as perfect, but I call them perfect, because they remain unchanged when you change from minor to major. The Third, Sixth and Seveth change when you switch from major to minor, but the second doesn't, so to me it doesn't make sense that it's not perfect.

Great video, as usual. Just a quick correction, 2nd is major or minor, it is definitely not a perfect interval. Perfect intervals are the unison (which was not mentioned), 4th, 5th and 8th, but I know that you knew that.

Thank you Zaven jan, I commented on someone else's comment, so I'll just copy what I said here. I know that the seconds are not considered as perfect, but I call them perfect, because they remain unchanged when you change from minor to major. The Third, Sixth and Seveth change when you switch from major to minor, but the second doesn't, so to me it doesn't make sense that it's not perfect.

As much as I enjoy the content, you need to de-exploit.
As your child is wildly talented, please enjoy it for yourself, but reign it in.
    Please protect her.
