Ear Training on the AIR BASS

- This is a good playful ear-training exercise and it also helps to visualize the bass guitar's fretboard while singing the notes. The more you sing and visualize, the better you will become at learning the melodies or the bass lines by ear.

I understand the discussion about 2nd not being perfect, however, it might be confusing for a kid, who's just learning the theory and barely understands the difference between minor and major scales. I think for Ellen that's a bit more advanced for now and not really important if you will. As long as she understands its functionality, I'm happy with it. In C major scale the 2nd is D, in C minor the 2nd is still D, which means in either scale the 2nd doesn't change, it remains the same. So it's better to explain that in these scales the 2nd is perfect, rather than say it's major 2nd, but the scale is minor. It might be confusing. I understand that this is not a common opinion, but this is how I see it. The only steps that change in natural minor and major scales are the 3rd, 6th, and 7th. So it doesn't really matter what we call it now, once we start learning the modes, then I can explain that in certain modes the 2nd is minor and in some it's major. Hope this makes sense.
You are Father Supreme. She is going to be a superstar. She deserves it because she is earning it. I love both of you so much.
Well said. I'm still trying to understand this
I never thought of it that way but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the perspective!
Great lesson with the air bass!
Really? What's hard about it? The first thing I thought when watching this is "Why have you taught her the second is a perfect interval?" You can play it out loud and hear it isn't perfect! You can look it up online where resources will tell you it isn't perfect. You also hesitated on 8th. The 8th and first are both perfect intervals. You may say "technically" as they are the same note but they are Still perfect and you Might play a unison on two different instruments so it does make sense even to call unison a perfect interval.
From your answer you don't appear even to understand what a perfect interval Means! It doesn't make any different in what scales they are the same note. Intervals are perfect because of how they sound in a chord. They are perfect because the frequencies are low-integer ratios of each other.
I don't know what it is but when you recorded this you appear to have confused the Major second interval of a major chord for a perfect interval, which it it not.
What I love about Ellen, besides her talent, is her love of learning. Kudos to dad for making it fun.
What a beautiful team
A little above me. I don't know note by ear.
I know what she is doing though. She hears the note and compares it to a melody and fingering out where it starts on the fret board.stll way above me
The joy on her face is priceless! What a beautiful relationship this father and daughter have. She is so blessed to have her dad sharing his musical knowledge with her and it shows. Great job, Dad and Ellen!
If I could sit all folded up like she does I would have to have help getting up. Cutest little superstar on the internet. She is a pretty good little singer.
What a great Dad. I’ve been playing for 40 years, self taught- I had fun playing along. Never did this kind of instruction. So fun.
I have no idea what they're doing or talking about but I LOVE watching this learning process between father/teacher and daughter/student. I especially love that Ellen never gives up and keeps trying until that light bulb above her head goes on. Keep rockin little one!!!
God Bless this little angel...she is so adorable, i cant even...
What a beautiful mind, eh? Amazing natural talent.
Hovak, you are a wonderful teacher. Great that she enjoys this excercise like a game. Crazy that I so enjoy watching these lessons. As said before, wish I'd had such a good teacher early on. Of course, it helps to have such a naturally talented student. I look forward to all your vids.
Thank you very much.
It's amazing that she loves what you love. You'll always have a connection through music. Daddy's little girl big time. So much better than kids off playing video games wasting time. She's getting educated in more ways than she'll ever know.
You are so lucky to have a teacher every day. A musical instrument is a friend you’ll always have.
This is nice to see you together. Ellen you are beautiful and you dad too. Keep up your good work!
Sir, you are teaching Ellen to be a musical genius. She is so fortunate to have you and you are lucky to have her. The fact that she witnesses the love and pleasure you have in music has made it possible to have it faithfully passed on to her. A father who loves his daughter so much becomes the beacon she can follow to her best self. As the son of two incredible teachers, and a corporate trainer myself, I admire your technique and positive reenforcement. The fact that she smiles so sincerely through her lesson is testimony to not only your skillset in teaching, but of the incredible father-daughter love you both hold for each other. If only more fathers were as caring and patient as you, we would be a far better world.
We're literally watching the making of a superstar. You''re both remarkably talented at what you do. ❤
She's got an excellent ear and a cute voice. Your lesson to her is taking me back to all of the things I'm out of practice with.
Thanks to Ellen today I understood the intervals after 40 years
She is a superstar in the making.
It's heartwarming to see such a wonderful father daughter relationship!
Ellen is lucky to have a great music teacher and it's her Dad! I'm sure the teen rebellion will increase in the coming years, but for now she is a very eager student and Dad is a very patient teacher and it just WORKS.
Her reaction to the open string 19:19 😄 Really enjoyed this video; I was trying to follow along with her for each exercise 🙂 It's great to see her enthusiasm, tirelessness and how she enjoys the challenge. Keep up the great work!
Wow! I’m a 40 year player. I so wish I had had this kind of teaching! Amazed!
Yeah, I’ve been playing various instruments for the last 3 decades, and my teachers taught me how to play. His approach teaches her how music works. It’s excellent and I’m learning a lot more than I expected by watching these lesson videos.
Ellen!! You are Super Bass Guitar!! LOVE!! Thank You!!! VB
I always enjoy watching Ellen learn, her eyes look like you can see the wheels spinning when she's figuring the notes out! ✌😎🎸🎶🎶❤
Ellen, I wish I’d had your ability when I was young to concentrate on interval training and the patience it takes. You’re doing an amazing job. I’m doing these exercises right along with you and it’s not easy! Thank you and your dad for making these videos.
I'm understanding more music theory in this 20 mins than I have from any other source I've read or listened to.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Ellen is so talented. Hope you both have an amazing weekend. Much love ❤️ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful to see the spark of learning. It's why good people teach and good people learn. Appreciate witnessing your journeys. Greetings from warm-ish Cornwall, UK.
Ya know, I think I need to apply this lesson myself! Thanks to both of you!
CC
it is bewitching to see you as father and daughter, and teacher and student.
Amazing job daddy, she's very smart ; )
The best part of all video:
-Daddy: Now u gonna imagine the fredboard....
-Ellen interrupting dad: Oh... i do that all the time! :D
Wonderful
if i would have had a teacher like that long ago i would of kept at it you guys are the greatest Ellen Rocks love and peace to you both god bless always
Nice lesson, she's got really good patience and trusts your method.
You always go the extra mile Ellen! That's why you are so good! So good! Oh, did I forget to say you are so good!
Omg you two.! I don’t know what to say anymore. Every video is making me a happier bassist. It’s magic.
Lucky Dad she's such a sweetheart! And she learn quick too! But i think she needs to concentrate more!
This girl is very getting and fun and great on the bass rock on 🤘
Look at you two, This is sooo unbelievable great to watch you and Ellen work Music, and she is so good in listening to the tunes! absolute Big fan of you two! Thank you for everything!
I'm watching u train u are so smart I get great injoy ment to see a person so young so smart
As she is incredibly gifted the patients her dad has is incredible, the patients and dedication to teach her from an early age is amazing, not taking away from her talent but
I took choir for 6yrs.
The instructor said to sing like you have a lightbulb in your mouth. It really amplifies the vocal cords. And is good exercise for the lungs. In other words. Set that beautiful voice free.
The interaction between you is inspiring!
wow, great concentration Ellen. I have a great ear, but your dad made it tough by playing solid instead of broken. I've never really tried that before. I love how you work it out by singing, I'm too shy and sing the scales silently in my head. And what stamina you show; I was ready for a break while you kept on going strong. Thank you for sharing, it was fun to play along. major sevenths are such strange beasts. :) I liked the octave approach you came up with. I never thought of doing that. Bravo
I really like that axe dad. Sounds great with Ellens voice and looks like a surfboard. Keep teaching us! Thank you!
You are Father Supreme. She is going to be a superstar. She deserves it because she is earning it. I love both of you so much.
She is smart and definitely talented so Amazing ♥
It's like watching Mr Miyagi train the Karate Kid.
woooooo, 1st: the moment you wanted to turn away to make it "more fun" which is like ..... totally in for the real game here, loved that. and then 2nd and not last Woooa Moment: the Star Wars thingi....i mean, whooot, how cool is this assocciation that came in straight out ........ :-)
....there is no way i could manage to not push the like button latest by this moment. totally cool.
great vid, thanks for the upload and the fun and inspiration you brought to me by it.
Greetingz,
Mariusz
Hello Ellen, I'm Brazilian but I'm your fan, I really like your dynamics on the instrument, with you it's only success.
I'm amazed at both of you. Continue doing great! Love you
Very good intonation, imagination of Ellen, there is a lot to learn with such a cool training, 👍💞 keep up the nice work
Hello dad and baby girl.Ellen you look lively as always but today you look special. And your lovely long hair makes you look perfect.
You're talented and smart girl,I always find pleasure watching your videos.
Mr. dad,I also like you.You are also very talented musician.I also like your patients and love for Ellen.May God bless you,and give us more videos,P.S Love you. Greetings from Australia.
The trained ear of the musician starts here. But give it time, train the ear and music will be fun again.
Always great tuition from Pa to Ellen, hopefully at school you also learn your lessons as great as this, because you ask the right questions as a student!!! 😊👍🎸🎸
I’m not quite sure what thing have to do with playing the bass but then again I guess that’s why I’m not a musician!
As I commented on another of your videos earlier today, I'm a 58 year old who plays bass professionally in several bands. I only started getting serious about learning bass about 10 years ago but have been playing guitar since age 13 and performing as a singer/guitarist since my early 20's. I was self taught at first but in my mid 20's I went back to university and earned a Bachelor's Degree in classical guitar. Novak is a fantastic teacher - I can't imagine how wonderful it would have been for me if I had a Dad like that to teach me like this so early in life! Ellen is already amazing and will only get better and better. (I always struggled with major and minor 7ths in ear training classes, too. I think it is because I always found it to be odd that the major seventh sounds so dissonant when played with the root, while a root and minor seventh were so much more pleasing to the ear.) I'm currently revisiting all of this theory myself and trying to take my playing up a level, as it is very easy to fall into just learning specific bass lines and playing by muscle memory, instead of thoughtfully applying theory in the practice room daily so that you really understand what notes and intervals you are playing at all times. This kind of work not only makes it so that you can play what your "hear" in your mind while improvising - it keeps the nerves away so that you can recover quickly when you are in a performance situation and have the inevitable drop in concentration or something and make a mistake. I just want to say that I think this is great. (And following along with her lesson gave me more of a workout than I usually have gotten when tuning into adults giving lessons on UA-cam channels.). Way to go, you two!
Ellen, you are a ROCK STAR darlin'! Please don't ever put it down like I did my 6 string back in the early 1990's (yes I'm ancient to you lol). I've found that it is not like riding a bike, you will loose your dexterity and skill if you don't keep it up. I have a daughter myself, so young women like yourself have always been able to melt my heart, but I want you to know you can be and do ANYTHING you put your mind to in life. Don't be afraid to go for your dreams and reach for the stars, you may even amaze yourself with how far you get with that attitude. I'm sure you will do wonderful and amazing things with your life. While I totally expect to hear the headline one day
"Rock Star, Astronaut, Lawyer, Governor, Egyptologist and Research Scientist "Ellen" cures cancer while discovering long lost and fully intact tomb or the great pharaoh Egypt ever knew, all while on break from land mark court case shortly after returning from space, where she ran the state of Nevada, ran her 4th reelection campaign, and won again all in her down time of piloting NASA and Space X's new faster than the speed of light space craft that she invented, this during the recording of her 11th solo album "It's funner playing Music Man basses in baby blue in space" all while her successful career as the front woman/song writer/vocalist/bassist/producer of the greatest Trash metal band since Metallica willing retired in tears after hearing her play for the first time. "It was pointless to even try to compete and release anything with someone like her in the music world, we just wish people would download our music illegally again so we knew anyone still listened to it" said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Ellen was quoted later as saying " I wish they wouldn't have called it quits, I still need an opening act you know"."
Seriously young lady, don't stop learning, ever, in all things in life. Everything you gather unto you now, no matter how small, will only help to strengthen the foundation your parents have, and will continue to, put into your life. I know this all sounds so serious, but I believe that the world can be cruel to females from little girl to an elderly woman. They already know deep inside that they are capable of so much. I feel that they would be unstoppable if given the support they deserve along the way, and you my dear deserve it. You have a fan and subscriber in this old man from the mountains of Tennessee. Yeah, okay, so some of it is that you can out play me on bass and your Stingray is hands down the coolest looking bass on UA-cam (way cooler than my all black one). I can admit that lol.
Great video! Ellen is amazing! She understands more about music than I do, and I played professionally for about 10 years. She has a very good teacher! I totally enjoyed her " Penny Lane" video, I understand how hard it is to play bass, and sing. God bless you, and your family!
There are certain sounds that are heard with a musical aspect, while there are also sounds heard, that are either based on spoken words, or the usual sounds you can hear in the background..... If you compare them to other usual 'sound' you hear, you find that they can be complicated to describe, in terms of how one note and another in a musical scale correlate.... If you consider pitch, or volume, or the treble/bass, you will find that it takes a very intelligent approach to understand music, and- certain guitarists or bassists were also vocalists.... It takes a careful comparison of notes/sounds to establish the exact difference or type of intervals.... Really, it takes quite a genius to work it out.......
Ellen's startin to rock that air Bass too... Lookout! 😉
Love this, but laughed out loud when Ellen broke into the Star Wars theme. 😂
Invisible bass!!
You are a great bass player ellen
I always tell people that singing a bass or guitar line is very helpful in learning that line. It get's to a point where as you get used to shapes, etc, that you can almost be ready to play it right the first try. You can get better without actually having the axe in hand, after a certain point, of course.
Love this
Awesome lesson, reminds me that I've got to get back to doing some interval training myself!
You can be a good teacher.
Ellen is amazing!
Great father!
Dad: Okay, bonus one.
Ellen: Yeah, Is it hard?
Dad: No, It's easy.
Ellen: Then why is it a bonus?
She is so cute
10/10.
Quick correction: The only perfect intervals are fourths, fifths and octaves. There is no perfect second, only major and minor seconds. :). Peace and love to you both.
Thank you, I appreciate that. I know that the seconds are not considered as perfect, but I call them perfect, because they remain unchanged when you change from minor to major. The Third, Sixth and Seveth change when you switch from major to minor, but the second doesn't, so to me it doesn't make sense that it's not perfect.
Such great concentration!
She'll never be on top 40 unless they change things drastically. She's way too talented for it.
Oh yeah. She's waaay past the 'pop' crap that's out today.
THNKXZ for your channel and interactions with ur daughter, my dad taught me how but not like the knowledge your sharing
VERY NICE VIDEO
She is very good to be true
Im learning alot here as well...
That explains it
The moment eyes of the tiger... awesome. Ellen; at what time did I sing anything...
Ellen, the next, smoke on the water... you are lovely. Thank you so match. i would've been great
Great video, as usual. Just a quick correction, 2nd is major or minor, it is definitely not a perfect interval. Perfect intervals are the unison (which was not mentioned), 4th, 5th and 8th, but I know that you knew that.
Thank you Zaven jan, I commented on someone else's comment, so I'll just copy what I said here. I know that the seconds are not considered as perfect, but I call them perfect, because they remain unchanged when you change from minor to major. The Third, Sixth and Seveth change when you switch from major to minor, but the second doesn't, so to me it doesn't make sense that it's not perfect.
Очень хороший урок.
Please cover the fixx!!!
Stand or fall
I have a challenge for you.
Only because I think you can pull it off.
You can do it.
"Black Betty " by Ram Jam
In bass ofcourse.
Bonus one....Is it hard. No!..Then why is it bonus?.. Smart girl with sense of humor. 😀
She also might find some inspiration from an Australian bassist Tal Wilkenfield who plays with Jeff Beck
You're great,wish you'd do..wings silly love songs
He has alot of drive as a teacher

Very smart girl. Soo cute
Ι hope Ellen realizes that her Dad actually played the first notes from, the unforgiven, smoke on Water and many other known. :)
like to see her and Annie Clements play together
Ellen is getting excellent music theory knowledge from her teacher father.
Sorry Dad its her show she is a natural that will develop faster now quicker on her on without your barriers.
Sorry Dad you are not letting the little lady develop with your barriers and restrictions. She is a natural and in time will work it all out so if you need a show get your own...
To the Guy in this video, less TALKING & MORE PLAYING THE BASS.
As much as I enjoy the content, you need to de-exploit.
As your child is wildly talented, please enjoy it for yourself, but reign it in.
Please protect her.
Don't worry. I can't pronounce "intervals" either. LOL
👍😉
