Hey Tommy, I agree with your comments regarding the GT4. I daily a F80 M3 and my weekend car is a 981 GT4. The GT4 is a great car but the 911 991.2 would make a better daily. It is more similar to the M3, more practical and softer than the GT4.
I recently drove a 992 Carrera S and it too is similar to the M3 but better in every way! It didn’t tempt me away from the GT4 however.
To be honest, you won’t go wrong with the 911 or GT4. The GT4 will put a bigger smile on your face and has a greater sense of occasion, the 911 will be a better all rounder but a little less special in my opinion.
Keep in mind the GT4 you can mod too, suspension is fully adjustable, remaps, headers, exhaust, GT3 throttle body and IPD plenum etc to name a few.....!!!
All the best Tommy and good luck with the careful contemplation 😀 Interested to see where you end up!

My DD F82 ZCP, also looking for the next DD as the lease is up. Drove the 991.2 S and car was nice and liked the smaller size comparing. Expected more from the acceleration, yes it gets down the road quickly but missing any drama that the BMW brings. IMO 991.2 S would be a nice DD but doesn’t bring much excitement to the duty. What do you think of the next G or the C8?

Matt Temecula the 992C2S is rapid and traction was phenomenal. Did you launch it? So effective, but agree it is so composed and drama free it lacks any excitement. I’d say it is almost too good. The one I drove had an aero pack and it looked the business!
I personally don’t mind the G series styling and think people will grow to love it. I’m sure the performance will be up a level V F series too!

I’ve been following your page for a while and you’ve been a big inspiration for me. Just bought my 981 GT4 and waiting for it to ship from Illinois. Got rid of my 2017 F80 DCT two months ago that had a ton of track time. As much as I loved my F80 on the track, it always felt a little big. Even with the big power, it was very difficult to keep up with the 981 and 718 GT4’s. I had the AP BBK, Ohlins RT, Recaro sportsterAnd a ton more. I can’t wait to hit NJMP in my GT4 next season and see how it compares. I can’t lie, I’ve got really really high expectations 😅

I have considered selling my f80 for a Porsche. I primarily do roll races and compete a couple times a year in fairly serious roll racing events. The F80 is such a great car for roll racing, especially compared to other sedans because of its low weight I’m having a hard time parting ways with it. The power to weight ratio along with its huge power band make it rewarding to drive fast. I’m grappling with selling it and getting something different I just have the feeling I’ll miss the car. It’s happened to me before with my e46 M3, 3000gt Vr4 etc... sellers remorse. The F80 manuals will retain their value since the new M3 is 400lbs heavier and has controversial looks.

I went from an E90 M3, to an M2C, to now owning a GT4 and G20 330i. Obviously as all rounders the M cars cannot be beaten, however that means they don't excel in any area. The GT4 has so much more character, feeling and theatre than the M2C. The M2C has been by far my least favorite car of the three, just too numb to be engaging and doesn't feel special. The E9x M3 gives you a lot of the same emotion, but with a very different chassis. Guys who appreciate the tech and torque of the f8x platform probably won't enjoy the GT4 as much. The GT4 handles very differently on track, but is equally as rewarding as a well setup M car. Based on the way you use your car I think you would prefer a 911 (roof rack, kids can sit in the back, 4WD for winter). However if your thinking of replacing the M3 with 2 cars, a more cooking daily and something special the GT4 definitely fits the bill.

@@TommyLGarage Great cars! Prices are very inflated at the moment as I'm sure you can see. For track it's going to be a lot slower than the F80 though if that bothers you. I'm in NY/NJ so if you ever want another chance to drive a GT4 before you decide let me know. Mine is completely stock as I just got it, but ill be doing headers harnesses etc. before next year.

    • @AutoPilotgogogo

Interesting thoughts, Michael. I've had very similar--an E90 M3 that started my track hobby 10 years ago, then a 991.1 Carrera S, and currently a GT4 and M2C. The GT4 was actually my daily driver for over a year. I even ran it in the winter with Pirelli Sottozeros. The GT4 then became a dedicated track and weekend car when I picked up a daily Audi S3. The M2C then replaced the S3 last year. I agree with you about the M2C. It's much more livable than the GT4 as a daily driver (low-end torque, updated electronics, heated seats, easy to get in and out of, etc.) while still being sporty, but it's just not exciting me in the same way my old E90 M3 did with its magnificent V8. I can't quite put my finger on it. The M2C is definitely fast, but it almost feels like you need to be going way too fast on public roads to get a sense of it. So it ends up feeling a little blah or sterile. Maybe I need to take it on track to get a true sense of it. The GT4, then, feels like even more of a contrast when I get back in it every couple of weeks--direct, involving, mechanical, amazing.

@@AutoPilotgogogo I recognize your handle from M3post, I think I've watched a few or your vids as well. Good stuff! I am Montaver on M3post. I've been reading Rennlist too but it seems totally dead by comparison. I plan to post a thread on there soon as I have a number of modding questions.
You basically hit the nail on the head with f8x cars, they are sterile and its 90% down to the engine. The S55 is effective but not very interesting to me. The fact it's a smooth straight six is actually a hinderance because there is no sense of drama. My venture into turbo cars taught me for driving engagement, you need an atmospheric engine with induction noise. For plodding around turbos are fine, and I do really like my G20 330i.
I think the M2C comes off very poorly in comparison to the e9x M3. The lack of sound deadening makes it tinny, the sound system is crap, no steering feel, and the aforementioned engine. It just never feels special like older M cars do. The e9x is great on a cruise, fantastic sound system, you wont lose money on a good one. And it has the emotional factor because of the engine. I'd like to own another one at some point. I took a $15K bath on my M2C in 9 months (I did Ohlins, then MCS and a few other bits), that's how little it did for me. It made me smile, the GT4 makes me laugh, grin, and pinch myself that I actually own one.
The M2C differential feels awesome on track though, it reacts way quicker than the e9x. And if your used to the M3, it has that same neutral balance that's very easy to get back in line if your out of shape. The seats are crap though so you slide around everywhere. An M2C with a tune, seats, harnesses, suspension and 275 square would be very fast on track. My confidence wasn't there initially with my GT4, took me a while to trust it wasn't going to rotate too quickly on me. I could only equal my E90 time at Thunderbolt (although my e9x had coils, brakes etc), but that was one day 4 sessions. I'm sure with more practice I could surpass it. But even if its not much quicker I don't really care because its just such an awesome, engaging and emotional experience to drive it. I really want to get the GT4 to WGI soon, thinking of doing HoD in a couple of weeks although I have never run with them. Maybe I should watch your video! My GT4 completely stock atm.

    • @AutoPilotgogogo
      @AutoPilotgogogo 3 роки тому +1

Absolutely. I also can't quite get comfortable in the M2C seats. As you know, the GT4 buckets feel great and you're planted once you're in. Highly recommend taking the GT4 to the Glen. It's such a fast, flowing track and the GT4 feels great there. Obviously it's down on power compared to GT3RSs and Z06s at a high-speed track like that, but it still does very well. As for the E90 M3 vs the GT4 on track, there is much more time to be had in the GT4 once you get comfortable and confident with it. As a comparison, my best lap at Lime Rock in the GT4 is a full 3 seconds quicker than my best in the E90 M3, and that's with the M3 having the advantage of 450hp from a Dinan catless midpipe and tune, as well as the M3 running on Toyo RR R-comps. The GT4 has been on Sport Cup2s, which are not as sticky as the Toyos.

My buddy has a 981 GT4. First of all, the sound is orgasmic. Had to get that out of the way.
Secondly, you can’t really daily it. The clutch is ULTRA heavy and the seats (918 seats) aren’t practical. Getting in an out never gets easy.
Sense of occasion - GT4 is INSANE. Amazing. The transmission is unbelievably good - you did notice that yourself.
Daily? M3 no doubt. Properly modded would make a good track tool.
PS: coincidently we were both at the track driving today and he test drove my M2C (somewhat similar to M3...) and he was positively impressed. He did say the GT4 has much better steering, though (both electric steering).
    I’d always take the 981 GT4 over a 718 GT4.

I sold my manual f80 for a manual 981s and love the Porsche. Mine has all the sport/gts options. Both were daily drivers and the Cayman with x73 sport suspension is actually pretty compliant. I prefer the ride quality over the f80 which I felt was quite harsh. Cayman is way better on track as well.
I think the sweet spot for you is the 991.2 carrera T though if you have the funds. You can put the kids in the back, the engine has good torque.. all the standard “sport” options and the sporttex sport plus seats are great. Tune and high flow cats really wake those cars up too.
The new 718 gts is gonna be a great all around car as well if you don’t need back seats.

Wind out the 981 in 2nd and your license is in jeopardy.

The 911 GT3 RS or if you got the money the 911 GT2 RS. The 2020 Cayman GT4 is a really good car at a decent price point. The GT cars are the cream of the crop but these are track weapons and canyon slayer. Not sure how good these are as daily commuter. A bit difficult if you got kids. The M3 is just a good all around sports car.

Posted above by mistake....was saying can identify with your thoughts, GT4 is a special car to drive, more responsive and track oriented but the M4 CS was a better all rounder. As always need to get the right for the right use. I find myself taking my wife’s car more often now I have GT4 because is it easier for the shops, where I would have enjoyed taking the M4 but when conditions are right the GT4 wins!!😆

991.2 911 Gts is the only alternative in comparison to the daily duties of an F80. IMO. The Gts is not as special or rare as a Gt4 but its rare enough and has the turbo power that you would be missing from your F80. I dont think a momentum car such as the Gt4 can replace the feeling of a boosted F80. Of course the Gt4 is a better track car and looks more special but you have to ask yourself will you only be tracking the car and do you want your next car to be so special that you would be scared to drive it for daily duties? Whatever your choice is, it will never be the wrong one transitioning from Bmw to Porsche. Wish I could afford both the 911Gts and the F80 but thats not feasible at the present time.
Friend of mine traded his 981 for the F80 because the 981 couldn't be utilize for his daily but he says he's returning to the 981 once the F80 is paid for because he doesnt want to part with niether and feels the need to own both.

Why was over half of the video spent talking about options, paint, key, etc? Let’s focus on driving dynamics!! It’s also interesting that he says that non GT3 911 owners are envious of the gt4. Well, as a 911 owner I would say this isn’t really stated correctly, and I have a brother, dad and best friend who also feel the same. We aren’t “envious” of the GT4, remember, the GT4 is cheaper than a 911, so if they wanted one, it could usually be had. Also, don’t forget that the GT3 is still based on a 911, so a normal 911 still has the DNA of a GT3 (and they can also be modded). Also, when talking lap times, go compare a 991 C2S on street tires the GT4 on cup tires. So I wouldn’t say 911 fans are “envious” but they deeply appreciate what the GT4 is and how well it performs and does everything so well. On a related note, as a former M3 owner, the feel just doesn’t come close to a Pcar. Regarding track work and driving dynamics, search “Marino Franchitti 911 vs m3” and see what he has to say (and check the lap times) ;)

As much as I like the Cayman.... to me it’s a side step if not a down step. The M3 when tuned destroys it. I wonder if the Cayman holds up to the track abuse any better then the F8x. I think that is the only way I would consider the less powerful Cayman over the M. If I can beat it up as badly as I do the M and not have to swap my brake pads and wheels and have no shudder after a track day ......it could be worth it.

Alex the GT4 is more focused so ultimately more rewarding but will depend on use, I used the CS daily and it was fantastic, more torque, practicality, really fast without the need to Rev out and more compliant for B road blasts. The CS is a great car, underrated potentially, the GT4 is more special for a quick blast, gear change, noise, poised but harder work, the CS more enjoyable as your only car....?

As someone that came from a 911 and is now in a f80 m3, I can attest that the 911 felt more raw than the m3. I prefer the drive of the 911. However, the M3 is more practical and a better daily driver. If you could swing a comfortable daily and have the 911 as a weekend/fun car I would go in that direction, but I don’t think I would rely solely on the 911 for a daily.
