- In this clip from the 15th episode of the Punks On Pizza Podcast Henry Rollins speaks about the panel for the HBO documentary PUNK that took place in 2019 featuring Himself Duff McKagan, Mark Ramone, John Varvatos, Donita Sparks and, Johnny Rotten.
Punk rock and panel discussions do not and should not mix. Mr Lydon brought the proper ingredient and made it truly memorable.
Johnny made it worth watching
I loved his ripping into the Ramone guy 😁
Yep
Rollins here reminds me so much of a drama teacher talking about a script in front of a bunch of drama kids.
😂😂😂good one, he thinks he is so important
He is an actor....and looked terrified of Lydon.
Johnny was a man falling to pieces at that event. But you gotta realise he was losing his wife to dementia. I lost my dad to that and it definitely fucks with you. Drunk I smashed in a few doors and lost a job to stupidity as well. Big love to John and respect to Henry for keeping his cool. 🙏
Then he should've stayed the fuck home
I just watched that panel before coming here and I'm glad someone else noticed, Johnny looks like a broken man in that video you can see it in his eyes and his mannerisms. As for Henry If it was that much of an issue for him he shouldn't have sat there silent like a pussy then go round speaking like this afterwards. Makes him look like a coward.
He has no cool. He probably doesn't know what it means to love someone beyond his childish hero worship left over from being a teenager with no friends.
Johnny having gay sex while his wife is dying what a drunk failure
@@ronofthesea5953 Like you? Must hurt...
I've met Mr Lydon when he was sober, and he was a genuinely nice guy. I think his "WWF" persona was definitely a bit larger than life that evening, and the British sense of humor was a bit lost in translation to the American audience due to the alcohol imbibement. He was (and probably still is) feeling the loss of his wife. Lost her back then due to Alzheimers, and now also in the physical sense. It has to screw with your head, and some people are more sensitive than others when it comes to hiding their inner feelings. The interview was a snapshot in time, but not something that I'd judge his entire life by. We all make mistakes. It's a shame it was emphasized in such a negative light... for sure, not one of his more tactful evenings... but I'm sure he'd be far more coherent filming it today. Much respect to Henry Rollins though, and all who took part in the panel interview that evening!
Its worth pointing out that British "humor" is a generational level of arrogance that many follows men British men of that era
@@velvetinedrapes4359 The generational level of arrogance is not exclusively a British trait. Thousands of cultures worldwide are similarly afflicted in believing their penis is bigger than everyone else's... particularly Americans, who love to ram it down everyone's throat every chance they get, that THEIR country is the "greatest in the world!" I'm in no way disputing USA's claim... I have no jingoistic notion in the slightest when it comes to global penile protrusion measurement, and could care less about drunken patriotic flag-shagging, however going back to your original point, I totally agree that UK citizens suffer from a spectacularly unhealthy self-deprecating nihilistic "own worst enemy" sense of confrontational humor which borders on projected self-harm. However it must be stressed that British humor (in my experience & perception) is not solely arrogant... is light years away from being one dimensional and has a multitude of different facets depending on which area it's born. It's all subjective & I truly believe that each member of the panel that night were there for a damn good reason, in that they each played a significant part in contributing to their pocket of the punk genre of music, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. 😉
Myself and my sister meet Johnny Lydon in a Highgate ( London UK) pub, he was really nice, friendly and chilled. We all have bad days and Johnny is losing his wife to dementia something my family went though recently with my Mum which was really hard,( who sadly died last year). Lets face it most of us have had bad drunken days at some point. I not excusing his behaviour but do you think Henry has always been the perfect gentleman. Henry rocks though.
Henry has told this same story in a manner slightly more generous to Lydon. When I first heard the story he mentioned that Lydon's wife was at home, sick with Alzheimer's. (she died this month)
Oh geez.
Poor dude.
I'm glad he did that, at least. Without a doubt, Lydon's behaviour that night was not cool, but Rollins - being empathetic as he is - should be able to look at the wider context of the situation and recognise Lydon was most probably someone in the depths of emotional pain at the time and just kind of lashing out, and not just lay into him. If Lydon had been sober and not had an ailing wife, he'd probably still have been a dick, but maybe at least waited his turn to speak.
Johnny taking pole on his wife’s death bed is shameful
@@markieffmorris9263 John was dealing with the street of his wife illness .Keep in mind, John's dad died a couple years before too and his brother had cancer too. John unfortunately dealt with this by drinking . He has said he later used alcohol to deal with problems.
@@christophernash1846 I understand but it doesn’t excuse his behavior. Don’t volunteer for speaking engagements you can’t handle.
Not to judge, because ppl can love whoever they want, but lifelong bachelor Henry going for the put-down by referring to Lydon's handler as his lover just makes me think of the rumors about Henry and his best friend Joe Cole prior to Cole's tragic murder.
Steve Jones said of Johnny Rotten that he never got over his rock stardom. The problem with Johnny, when he's up on stage, it's all about him.
As it fucking should be. And Rotten was right about that Danny Boyle directed debacle based on Jones' book. Love the Pistols forever, true gamechangers but I don't suffer from Pistols derangement syndrome. Rotten has become a political idiot, Jones shills for the 12 Steps. Loved Black Flag Rollins/Ginn and Rollins solo, great live shows. But Henry has turned into Bill Maher. We still have the music, that's what counts.
@@walkerstark4564”Political idiot” ?
No he’s a political superstar calls fkn Marxist ideology out for what it is !!
Gotten over ? No problem with Johnny he should be seen and heard more often !
True. Thats what put me off him. He is an intelligent guy and I like the Pistols but he goes from saying punk was all a joke and a face etc etc to reminding everyone he "gave them" punk and they've got him to thank for it. Then he appears as a guest on a talk show and takes center stage even when he's got 3 other guests beside him
Yeah, Henry, and I remember you were sooo P.C.
I said that he's a prick, but a big cranky kid
And all he talked about was politics
Buff from lifting cars and he don't like girls no more
'Cause Henry Rollins is no fun
Henry Rollins is no fun
Henry Rollins is no fun, just ask my mom
Johnny is the drunk uncle we all put up with because he did so much for us when we were young. We love him, we are even a bit protective, but we all shake our heads and give each other the " i know, but what do you do?" look. He helped us skinny alienated kids with bad teeth and scoliosis find our path and i will be forever greatful to our badly behaved old drunk uncle for that.
Edit : his wife was dying of dementia, he was loyal loving and looked after her tenderly to the end, he even stopped this interview to take a call from his distressed wife and explained to the audience why....he is a prick but this made me respect him as a good man and this one act was a lesson for all of us.
i never met a punk that wasn't a drunk nasty hypocritical slob by 40. and while henry isn't a drunk he's by far one of the nastiest people i've ever met. Coming from 30+ years in the music industry, starting off as a punk.
Nope! We don’t “put up with” Johnny. We appreciate him for ALWAYS being honest and telling the truth, and NEVER selling out. Unlike the millionaire Henry Rollins who’s a fake moron! Henry is part of the system - Johnny is not and never has been!
names Marky Ramone twice but can't remember Donita lol
well the organizers of that panel should have known that inviting Johnny Rotten in that particular constellation is just asking for trouble
Probably the reason they did it.
Thank you for sharing this. I hadn't heard about this incident. Duff and Henry are such great guys.
You can find the video of the incident online as well.
Just search John Lydon vs Marky Ramone and you will find it. I thought it would be entertaining but It’s pretty sad actually. Lydon was beyond drunk and emotionally distressed with his wife’s illness. He shouldn’t have been out in public that night and definitely not being filmed for a documentary promo.
@@CFarnwide I agree , It was sad. I had to turn it off.

I stumbled on this video while listening to some PIL. This was interesting. Now back to some more PIL.
have you seen the event he's talking about, its hillarious, Johnny Rotten is far out that day
After all these years Johnny Lydon is still a Punk and loved his wife to the bitter end.
Punks don't sell out - Lydon was always a sell out pretending to be a punk
@SuperMickyChow Johnny Lydon never sold out, which is why he wasn't interested in the Sex Pistols movie. It was his ex bandmates that sold out.
Exactly!
@@Guitarcope he advertised butter ffs...
@@SuperMickyChow At least it was butter and not margarine.
Lydon has admitted he was in a bad place then. He was looking after this wife full time and gain a huge amount of weight. He’s since lost it. The whole debacle is on UA-cam, he stops the conference half way to answer a call from his wife (who has Alzheimer’s disease). All up on UA-cam if you want to see for yourself.
The man can use that as an excuse, but civility counts for a lot. It doesn't mean that you can use any public forum to use your personal life as a vent for your dirty laundry
Its true what marky ramone said malcom maclaren did come to new york and take lots of ideas from new york like safety pins wich the bands used to do to keep rips together and decoration and dee dee ramone started padlock around the neck thing not vicious
Johnny had his style before the Sex Pistols, though. Even in 1975, when nobody knew the Ramones. Allegedly The Johns (Sid Vicious, Jah Wobble, John Gray and Lydon) got their style from squatting with hobos. Apparently Rotten's hairstyle was mocking his dad when he told him to cut his long hair. There are pictures from 1975 which shows John already had his dyed cropped hair back then.
I had a great time listening and watching John's drunk rants...
I bet everyone else was too, interviewees and audience. Except one.
What crap, I watched the press conference on youtube. Sure John Lydon was drunk, but still talking sense. He actually said "Iggy was not a punk", which is true as punk is a moronic term invented by the UK music press to insult the new bands like the Pistols, the Damned, etc.
As for Marky Ramone, he just doesn't understand the huge difference between what happened in the UK and the CBGB's scene. The Ramones did a good album but then got stuck in a rut, that's not what happened with the UK bands, especially the Pistols who were not in it for a career as a rock n roll group! The real difference being the direct attack on the way things were in the UK, that's why the British Establishment feared these bands so much. They were the next step upwards from the 60's rebels.
Somehow every time I see/hear things from Henry I appreciate him more.
Oddly completely the opposite for me.
Thanks for the vid but holy shit man: some warning for the shouting "thank you very much Henry" at the end. Had my speakers up to hear Henry! Blew my ears out.
Johnny is my favorite celebrity, and my favorite man. He inspired me to speak my mind as a youth, and I'm still that way. Hes brutally honest and fiercely loyal. That's a real man. Not Rollins who punches guys out.
i watched the documentary. Jonhy Rotten was the best because he was real. The others were like the boring poppet dolls of the show business industry.
Mark Lamarr told Johnny Rotten to leave part way through an episode of Nevermind The Buzzcocks.
He said later it was such a shame because John Lydon was one of the most intelligent and kind people he'd ever met but as soon as the camera started rolling it was Johnny Rotten.
He has become a parody of himself and a slave to his anarchic image.

Don't forget he also raised his step daughters (Ari) children after she died , he has been lippy, confrontational...but he has also shown us how a GOOD man acts when it comes to caring about people and he definitely stepped up. Yeah word. Now that you mention it, Johnny kinda made all those other dudes look like they weren't punk. It was more like, "Whoa, this dude is being wild. He's making me uncomfortable." Versus, "Ah yes, my old punk days. Let's throw a chair together." And who picked the interviewer? That guy was terrified, trying his damndeset to manipulate Johnny back into a confortable norm (like your typical school teacher), with his big rounded face looking soft as hell. Much respect to Marky Ramone; it seems like a good punk conference could use some tense back-and-forth.
Henry forgot the part where Johnny Rotten tells him that Black Flag's music is boring.
😂😂😂
Lydon couldn't tell you the name of one Black Flag song if his wife's life depended on it. His knowledge of the US punk scene could be written on the back of a postage stamp.
@@rrbh his knowledge of the uk punk scene was also minimal at best, he was on a panel with penny from crass for 4 music and when the question about how crass fitted in with the uk punk scene he went on and on as if penny wasn't there, you could see john robb who was the chair's eyes rolling.

No one would rememeber that evening or that doc were it not for Lydon's antics. And his wife was suffering badly from Alzheimers. Give the man a break.

Marky Ramone, and Marky Ramone's wig... 2 different personalities haha...
As mentioned elsewhere, context is seriously missing here. Lydon (Rotten) had ballooned in weight and was having serious issues due to his beloved wife falling to dementia. I hope Rollins realises this now. Plus, he wasn't running around at all (see the video) and is pretty funny for much of the time.
Also his brother had cancer , and his dad died too a couple years ago.
He completely derailed the interview in a successful attempt to make it all about himself. Which is on brand, but disappointing nonetheless. When will we ever have these kinds of peers all on one room where you could get points of view from all over the punk historical spectrum, and instead it just became one man’s improv show. I know he was going through it, but it just bums me out that the moment didn’t get to happen.
That is all very sad and I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but it is overlooking the fact that John Lydon has done this all of his life.

Is the part about being suburban rich kids not true?
One of the things that Henry keeps saying that always makes me cringe is: "I come from the blue-collar working world." The guy had a couple of service jobs as a teenager... like every teenager does... but his father (while an asshole) was a college professor, and he's spoken about how his mother was a high-flying executive in DC. He went to a private military school. His upbringing may have sucked, but he's always been middle-class, and the punk/hard-core movement in the US was dominated by well-off, white suburban kids.
The Blonde giving Henry the googly eyes the whole time.😂😂😂
Very weird and uneccessary comment about his manager being his 'lover'.
Even Rollins up front says he is tired of these bullshit docs, if Johnny hadn't have done that you'd remember absolutely nothing about the doc much less its fucking press tour. I found the video of this event on YT ua-cam.com/video/HhVZLL1pMQ0/v-deo.html. Rollins' description is quite distorted. Lydon isn't running around the room, he's seated the whole time. Admittedly, he's obnoxious as hell and hogs the mic somewhat, but other people get to speak too. He has a great shouting match with Marky Ramone at one point, and Ramone hilariously ranks him out Brooklyn style, which Lydon clearly enjoys. The exchange Rollins describes between himself and Lydon happens while they are sitting on the panel as part of the discussion, he doesn't walk over to him. The whole event was fun and crazy, definitely doesn't end in 10 minutes--the video is 24 minutes, and the beginning was cut so it probably ran over half an hour. Without Lydon, it would've been a total rock geezer borefest.
He called M Ramone for what he was a second edition not original member 😂 Johnny is and always as been un conformist that’s what he was displaying but at a very difficult sad time in his life and also happened to be pissed out of his mind , only a real prick would use that debate make himself feel riotous and important condemning someone worth ten of himself
Rollins is talking about the panel where they were all seated but also the instances before and after the session.
I met Johnny at one of my brothers parties back in the late 80's. He was a huge snob, and was annoying everyone. He ended up leaving after standing there by himself for a while because no one wanted to talk to him.
Funny but you hear so many different stories about Johnny...sometimes he's an absolute darling, sometimes not... I think in recent years perhaps he has become a much kinder person.
Met him 20 years ago, very off as was his even more off pal Rambo. My sister met him a couple of times in punk era London too, found him funny and interesting first time , second time his mates and him were causing bother in a Chelsea pub, different person she said. As Glen Matlock said, "funny kettle of fish is John." Aye!!
Since the normal societal expectation is friends and conversation indicate success, I'm hoping next time I go to a party no one talks to me, and maybe you haven't experienced the thrill of being truly honest with someone and not giving a shit.
@ColinMorganTeacher I make it a point to be straightforward, and honest with people. You can do that without being a prick. Funny though this video wasn't about me, so I can't understand why your comment was.
@@dougrussell1926 Because you said about Johnny, among other things, "He was a huge snob, and was annoying everyone." whilst i respect rollins, i've always found him rather dull, i loved punk(or liked it a lot to be more precise) but it doesn't really mean a great deal now, rotten is a legend regardless of how he turned out, rollins is nowhere near him, its funny how precious some people are over punk, interminable arguments about it and a kind of almost religious reverence for it, it was just music and fashion for young people that's all

This video was shot after his wife had passed BUT the incident Henry's speaking of regarding the Q&A was shortly before his wife passed. Johnny gets a call in the middle of the Q&A and explains his wife is very sick so he needs to take it.

ngl the panel was hilarious to watch
The video, or the part that was videoed, is on youtube. Henry had the best reaction of everyone there, imo, which was just to laugh at the absurdity of it. So, in a tiny, minute way I cringe to hear him say he thought about punching out John at the time. Partly cause that's always easy to say afterwards, and partly cause it would have been a stupid reaction. It's not a good idea to take a drunk person seriously, imo.
John was clearly pretty drunk and obviously alcohol just exacerbates his existing condition; tending to be as controversial and verbally confrontational as possible. It did make him look sad. And I'd bet he regrets it.
But these things happen sometimes. And I think in American culture, people take stuff like this a little too seriously. Just my opinion. And why I say Henry's response at the time was perfect. This isn't to excuse drunken behaviour, but there's just no point in getting offended and arguing with a drunk person. You just can't take that seriously. Even they don't believe what they're saying most of the time. Just my opinion.
But it was pretty entertaining.

The man who dresses Iggy Pop. Now that's sad.
"Iggy, today, I've selected for you: no shirt and an old pair of jeans. Looking to tomorrow, the outfit will be... no shirt, and let's say... an old pair of jeans."
One of the funnier commets i read here.
Don't forget John's friend had just died, kieth flint from the prodgedy he wasn't him self 😢
That's because Johnny has something called "arete". It's a Greek word, look it up. Means "presence", strength of spirit. In the old days they would knock down walls so that a person with a big ARETE could enter a fucking room. Sorry you're jealous of Rotten's ARETE. It is what it is. His greatness will not be known again in your lifetime, and if you are stuck playing second or third fiddle on stage.....OH WELL. As much as I love ya Henry, them's just the facts.
Rollins version of how he reacted to events that evening is simply not true. The video is on UA-cam.
The worst people are old people who are literally against everything they stood for when they were young but do not realise they are .
You said it! John Lydon s a fucking MAGA now. I guess if you marry a rich lady you don't care about poop people anymore.
That is not Johnny .He realized who the establishment is has changed.
@@natemendsen1629 that's exactly what I was getting At.
@@ashd-h4911 Read ya wrong...Very good....
@@ashd-h4911 Try explaining that to people who think that punk aligns with a political ideology of any kind...
Been following Rollins stuff on and off since before either one of us had grey hair. The man never lets the truth get in the way of a good story..
I saw this n Johnny was pissed n taking the piss out of everybody...I love the pistols n PiL metal box / flowers...like Henry says Let's NOT end up like him...
God he does run on....and on
John always wins hank
If the event was all classy and polite it wouldn't be punk.
That's not even getting into Lydon's full-throated adoration of Trump...
An HBO documentary about punk...Sounds like it went down exactly like it should have...
I wish people would learn to mic level on their videos!
Henry Rollins is very conveniently a "chill guy" when the situation allows, then a tough badass threatening to knock people out alternatively. It's pathetic. And besides, who cares if God damn Johnny rotten is acting up at a public event? Is the guy known for his mild manners?
So, at 4:07 in, did Henry Rollins just out John Lydon? You know Henry has done stuff that is reprehensible as well, but has never been outed. Sexist, homophobic, bullying type of shit, and he didn’t have alcohol to blame for it. Which, in my opinion, is worse.
Puuuuhhhhh.
Listening to Rollins spoken word is like having a teenage girl read you her diary.
When Henry says "punk," I think of Burroughs' definition of the word.
That actually made me chuckle. Though I doubt many will get it.
"a punk is someone who takes it up the ass"
I'll take all four, thanks.
hahahahaha. best description ever.
Still more Punk than your manufactured boy band
Maybe Henry should tell Rambo (johns friend and manager) about him being John Lydons lover?.......I believe Henry might have met his match with him.......
Henry's such a fake, man
Rollins failed to intimidate Johnny, who looked him straight in the face and insulted him
The best part of that isn't mentioned in this video
