- Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Deep thinker.
Henry Rollins has been there and done that and isn't afraid to tell us what he really thinks about it.
He is far more than just a formerly-angry punk front man as I discovered in this fascinating one-on-one...

Henry Rollins is my moral north star. He puts into words alot of what I am thinking. When he talks about having no self confidence and that he feels he has to work 3 times as hard because he knows he will probably screw it up. Man that is hits home.
How he talks about his father hit home too. My father back breaking hard worker and really smart. But buys into all the right wing conspiracy theories. Dad literally believe in global under ground pedophile cities.
"Henry Rollins is my moral north star. "
That's the kind of thing you keep to yourself because you don't want people to know you're a loser.
But still a conformist poser

@@jimbeam-ru1my I was thinking the same about your comment.
One hell of a human being.
He’s had 30 years of my respect and hopefully another 30 to come.
Total inspiration, and an absolute legend.
Thank you for your honesty, hard work and dedication, Henry.
I salute you!

Henry Rollins isn't ANTI-RACIST - he just hates white people - countless studies show that blacks are the MOST BIGOTED people on EARTH - Henry ignores their hateful demeanor because he feels they are INFERIOR. The guy is a CLOWN SHOW just virtue signaling his entire life - saying things & telling lies he doesn't actually believe just because he thinks it's trendy. It's a pathetic existence
This interview could have been 5 hours and I would've still watched the whole thing! Amazing interview, Henry is always so insightful in his interviews. Thank you!!

In addition to uncountable times seeing the Rollins Band, I have seen Henry do spoken word shows six or seven times over the past 30+ years and it is always worth it... will be there in July too.
Saw Rolliins Band at the first Lollapalooza ,Dallas tx 1991......
Saw the End of Silence tour in Austin 1992.......and finaly ....Rollins Band ,Weight tour....opening up for Helmet ,1994 in San Antonio....
Pat disaster
Henry signed my the end of silence L.P. at a spoken word show in my hometown in Liverpool, UK, it was a cold night, and covid was still an issue, but he still signed our things, other artists wouldn't of entertained signings on a night like this, but he did, respect to our Hank.
Saw Henry's spoken word show where he mostly showed photos of his travels and told stories about them.
There was more energy in that room than at most punk shows that I've seen - and I've seen quite a few.
Love the bath towel hung up in the background, nice touch!
Have the exact same father and it’s helpful for me to hear him talk about it
Richmond V.A The Casablanca 1981 or 2 Black Flag best show of that genre of music I ever saw. Thanks Henry!
First time I've seen Henry all grey. I'm 46 and it's coming in on the sides...damn!! I'll never dye it and just be real and natural like ol Hank!!
Aged gracefully he has. 😻
It's amazing someone on UA-cam that has just 409 subscribers manages to interview such a famous individual. Again never ceases to amaze me.
It's a new podcast that's not really viewed on youtube.
The host Duncan Garner just lost his radio job a couple of months ago so I think this platform is brand new. Also, not many people in New Zealand so NZ media gets a lot fewer clicks.

I don’t think people would give a shit how old he is and would feel lucky just to see him perform music- but I understand he goes where he feels he’ll have the most powerful impact.
The question about his father passing was a bit personal but Henry took it quite well. All I can say is...Damn!!
It's just different to see HENRY in a shirt that isn't black 😊 I am a 57 yr old drummer who is just starting to explore more colors in my wardrobe 😁😎🎼🥁🥁
Hahaha! Brilliant!!
I have a theory regarding his t shirt color and his hair color. Seems to me, he wore more black t shirts when he had dark hair, gray t shirts with gray hair and now white t shirts with white hair.
He signed a million dollar deal with KK, makes him a poser

The black and white
I like Henry a lot - Rollins Band in particular were a very underrated band.
No ones perfect obviously and Henry definitely is a fighter and gives a great interview .. that said their are two great questions hes being avoiding for years :
1. The reason hes not doing Rollins Band anymore is because he's too old to be travelling and singing at the level the band would be perched at today. Also, There is zero money in being in a band of that level in 2023.
2. His parents. He wont go into that - its a closed shop. if he genuinely didn't connect with his father at 61, hes obviously been dealt a really hard blow in childhood. Theres got to be abuse at the root of that.
If you're a creative type you really want to read Henry's book 'solipsist.'
There's my guy.Pure role model.
Love this guy. Rollins for President!! 🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠
It's the first time I hear him say that he's a rich man. The old "I got to work for my next meal" was getting old.
YESSSSS!!!! FINALLY! For once, I don't hear Henry Rollins and his "work ethic" bullshit. He's been a multi-millionaire for many years now.
Henry can be interesting from time to time because he has entertaining ways of describing ordinary bullshit in life, but FUCK him and his work ethic, and his "working hard for his meals and his floor to sleep on" garbage, because he's a *very* wealthy man for what he did with his life. Christ, he gets on stage and talks. He is NOT a brain surgeon. He does NOT build power stations or highways for a living. THAT kind of stuff is hard work.
Now that he's getting old, Henry Rollins is finally outgrowing some of his pretentiousness and I think that's pretty cool. It's also about fucking time already!
Love that man! I wish he'd go on Bill Maher's podcast and set him straight.
I'm a black man and I couldn't tell you about any of Mr. ROLLINS music, but I've always thought he was / is a pretty cool guy. Very intelligent and stands on his beliefs. Respect!! 🍺 🍻
amazing interview!
Henry is so cool. I think I'm going to see him when he comes round in September.
Henry’s the man. I can totally relate to him. A man I can trust.
COULDN'T HAVE BEEN EXPLAINED ANY BETTER WHAT A WORD SMITH💥💯
Henry's my idol, and I'm old. 👊 Not many people impress me that much.

Great interview
Such an interesting Man.
Absolute legend.
Excellent books, highly recommend...love his music. Love to hear him speak on History. The man is so interesting
I LOVE THIS MAN!!! He is incredible! HE IS INTENSE and that is why I love him!
I have watched him speak 4 times in my life. I saw him in 2005, 2017,2018 and 2022.
He is delightful and I had the honor of meeting him in 3 out of those 4 speaking engagements. He is a sweet person but I can see why he is guarded.
In the last three speaking engagements there were still groupies. One of them was quite clingy and wearing THE OUTFIT hoping to be called backstage for sex. She was so vacant, she didn't know Henry wrote books! He probably got lucky and good for him if he liked that type.
He would be a great dinner guest not because he is a celebrity but simply because he has a lot of interesting things to say and he is funny without even trying.
Growing up in conservative deep south Texas, a lot of the things he said would have been considered foreign but when he said them, I felt like I wasn't alone in the world and VINDICATED.
My dad died of cancer around the time Joe Cole was murdered so when I was exposed to his work, it was like the universe gave me a gift. I liked the book on grieving because those feelings were shared when I read those lines in his book!
He even talked about how people show their true colors when there is a death or tragedy. I saw a lot of ugliness too when my father died and to know someone else knew and understood meant so much at the time!
I will always have a special place in my heart for this man!!!
Henry i fucking love your soul man!
Man’s interviews are like a book. Articulate on the fly and covers all angles. Would love another studio album. Understand not wanting to be angry and spastic live in your late 60s but do it one more time on wax Henry lol.
Thanks Henry!
Is it supposed to be special that he "opened up" to this particular interviewer? I mean rollins generally will talk at length whether you want him to or not. Lol
Henry signed my the end of silence L.P. at a spoken word show in my hometown in Liverpool, UK, it was a cold night, and covid was still an issue, but he still signed our things, other artists wouldn't of entertained signings on a night like this, but he did, respect to our Hank.

The best singer Black flag ever had.

not "singer".
I love him but Dez was the man.
See you Tuesday in Fall River, MA
"Too intelligent for that!" Many confuse intelligence with wisdom.
ah, the hamster wheel of trying to get ahead grounded by one of my heroes, rather just flying higher.
I remember Henry outside the Astoria in 81-82 when Black Flag played and Henry was raving about how we should attack the cops because they had no guns. "We could beat their ass" he said, we all forgot to mention the Brixton and Toxteth and Bristol riots.
He's a champagne socialist
What Henry is saying here about his father makes one think , ''are there Ideals, regardless of their bias, worth defending beyond the risk of losing your kids' attachment to you?''. The answer is 'No'', of course, but the road to get there is long and rocky as Hell and you're barefooted.
Bless him
Rollins says some things that I wish some would listen to, he's simple, direct and knows who he is. I'm curious about one thing, behind him there's a towel covering something, pretty sure it is Rollins that said something like ''I'll be on your show but I'll not have that thing as a background behind me.'' , I wonder if anyone knows what it is? :)
just assumed it was a doorway or a window.
bothered me though that someone couldn't go and get a coupla yards of black fabric. ha!
shrug.
just a very 'visual' person.
I like Hank, but I'm glad he got called out at 16:45 on that old line about his father.
I just watched him squirm through the debacle with John Lydon. I think the only thing Henry Rollins has missed is that Rock'n Roll/Punk is in fact purile and toxic at its core. Everything depends on the ability to control the ego, of which he is a genuinely shining light.
my hero
Henry forever.
Probably disagree with him on a lot of political issues but I love his spoken word performances. Especially when he brings up the subjects U2 and techno. Also, his work ethic is admirable.
He's pretty based politically. Most people aren't homophobic misogynistic or racist. Climate change I for one believe in but is up for debate. I would like to know his thoughts on systemic racism and gender affirming care for minors. Those two things are the real hotseat in America right now and most people are divided. Would be interesting to see his take if he even has one. I'm sure he probably just dosent care which is the same way I typically feel
So you're a right wing hardcase..is that what ya tryna say?
Unfortunately most of the west is following the Yanks footsteps.. no real party to represent the blue collar worker...all party's are now centre right...& turn the argument onto sexualism, rather than human rights.

"I'm not a musician. I can't play an instrument." - Rollins 2022 :D
Props to him for having the balls to bluntly admit it instead of his usual gassy jibber-jabber :)
I wish politicians and other entertainers had the focus and perception that Henry has developed. Life is too short to have your eyes closed.
I was an early punk kid and I had a somewhat similar upbringing.
Always liked & respected Henry, both as a man and as a musician. But I wish that I had heard more of what he says sooner.
Down to earth wisdom & honesty of the highest degree.

Wayyyy too much focus on whether or not Henry is/was angry. There are so many other aspects of his life that would make much more interesting topics of discussion.
You should have asked Hank how he feels about Mike Valley stealing his identity 😮
Musician?
If this guy drank he'd be Charles Bukowski...
3:40

This interviewer is squirrelly AF. Too much caffeine! But at least he lets Henry talk.
Duncan Garner looks like he's been on a year long bender drinking Lion Red & eating meat pies.
Wow, he really has placed himself on a pedestal, looking down on everyone else. Henry really does believe that he’s doing something great, and making changes to the world by ridding it of all its evils. I guess it’s great to have been in a popular band. I’m sure that spoken word that he does pretty much just preaches to the choir. In the grand scheme of things his impact probably will be similar to the effect a butterfly has on the world by rigorously flapping its wings. Sorry, but I don’t need some former punk rocker to lecture me on how to live my life in a meaningful and moralistic way. Henry Rollins really comes across as a narcissistic clown, even though he really does believe he is enlightened and is making a difference.
He's like a punk metal version of Eminem. But cool.
Why does Duncan Garner stutter his words like he’s uncertain all the time, guys interviewing someone and he stutters with a twang in his voice.
Rollins loves painting a hard life for himself and appearing working class/hard working
The racial tension in DC
The minimum wage world
Getting into fights
Always going with his feet on the starting blocks
Henry lived in a white section of DC
He attended a very exclusive, very expensive private school
He scooped ice cream for a few months
In his 20s, he punched 14yr old kids at black flag shows
He talks, and noone is listening, writes it down, undoubtedly for far fewer hours than the average American works....all while dressed like an auto mechanic despite never having done any work in his life that would actually require a pair of Dickies
😂
I HATE THAT HENRY's a liberal. he should be a leftist... not mad at Bush or Trump... but mad at all of them. When he advocates for voting, he advocates for maintaining this system. It needs to be dismantled!
Why do you assume he's a liberal? He made fun of Joe Biden in this very video
Rubbish I just seen him being disparaging about John Lydon.........and basically call him a homo for no reason but he wanted to denigrate him.......
He didn’t give his dad a chance to maybe show he changed. Come on Henry. People can change
Behind the glib response to his father's death there's still a bunch of unresolved feelings. From what I have read in a lot of Henry's books he should have had just as much rage towards his leftist mother for all the loser degenerate boyfriends she brought home to abuse him. He's open enough to talk about the stuff but hasn't processed it. I had a very similar kind of dad growing up but i found room to forgive his bullshit, Henry comes off pretty cold and cruel about a dying old man that wanted to see his son...
@@palehorse1111 agreed
When a person has made your life hell you do NOT owe them reconciliation. Especially arrogant parents that raised you to hate being alive when you used to LOVE being alive.
I'm very curious why he chose to leave LA, for a state that epitomizes some fundamental things he focuses his anger against??, ie: homophobia, racism

Henry Rollins is more than just a punk musician, hes an intilectual.
No, he is NOT an intellectual (and you spelled "intellectual" wrong.)
Henry Rollins is a good talker. His thinking is pretty ordinary, it's his personality that's very unusual. He's a very bombastic talker and knows how to make mountains out of molehills when he speaks. That's what made him a great entertainer to many people.
Cool man, thanks for correcting me. Also what I said is my opinion based on my perspective so theres that.

Over the years I've slowly but surely outgrown Henry Rollins. 25 years ago we were on the same page. I no longer find him interesting, nor impressive. Why people stop learning, developing and growing, or simply refuse to learn, develop and grow, is a mystery to me. Usually I blame it on college, but I don't believe that applies to Henry.
Yeah, he's basically a champagne socialist. Totally out of touch with _real_ reality.
How would you say he's not changed? Watching his interview with Howard Stern from 2000 he seems to be quite a different person now. He seems to have mellowed out a lot and gained some perspective on the world which he's gained through travelling outside of the western world.

I'm not impressed with people who feel nothing. is Henry a narcissist? was he bragging? (that he was writing a book...)
males are conditioned from babyhood: "feelings - bad". possibly he DID feel something. and dealt with it by diving into his "struggle for higher achievement".
(Joni Mitchell, 'Jericho')
funnily enough, he described his father as an over-achiever...
@@katherine9109you don’t know Henry nor his relationship to his father. I’m not impressed by those who think they know what others should be feeling.
He has written about and spoken about his Father at length. He had a lot of making up to do to Henry. Probably didn't care to or didn't know how.
To the commentors here. I went to see Henry Rollins since I posted & he spent 30 minutes of his set basically laughing & mocking his dead parents including his mother & what he did to some of her ashes. It wasn't funny though he tried to make it comedic. It was unnecessary & I lost respect for him.
@ChillWithJel What do you expect from a narcissistic sociopath? I am very familiar with this type of personality, as he's so much like my brother, who only contacted our father when he was looking to "borrow" money, but didn't have the decency to show up at his wake or funeral. He ha no interest in maintaining contact with me and my brother and our families, and he's turned his daughters against us.
Pity he didnt mention misandry
He is not really a musician. Not a lick of musical talent actually. I do like some of his social commentary, but his 'how I made myself superstar of manhood as a punk' is a rather tired story now.
Yeah it is, it's been a tired story for ages and I like Henry Rollins even though I don't know him and haven't listened to a lot of his stuff since I was into Black Flag when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old.
Henry has been too wealthy for too long to keep milking that "hard working hard life" bullshit. He's not Mickey DeSadist--and Mickey doesn't have a chip on his shoulder about the fact that he's been an actual musician for half a century and still has to work for a living :)
how about henry for president ... sooo much better than Trump and Grandpa Biden
He should have made up with his dad
nope.
and by what Rollins said - he wasn't a 'dad'. he was his father, but sounds like 'sperm donor' best describes him.
Why?
@@radzo1675 i think it would have felt good to maybe forgive him and end the never ending anger and hate he holds bottled up.Maybe
@@katherine9109Read most of Rollins' books. By all accounts the mother was just as deserving of the hate (and probably did more damage bringing in the abusive boyfriends) than his father, who was on the periphirary with a little every other weekend custody. Its stockholm syndrome on a child, whoever gets primary custody sets the narrative of the other parent being a villain because they have a young impressionable mind to manipulate.
