So I broke into the palace, with a sponge and a rusty spanner. She said "Eh, I know you and you cannot sing". I said "Thats nothing. You should hear me play piana." Best lyrics ever.
In my mind, one of the greatest single songs ever written. Marr is simply incredible on guitar with his aggressive shredding and the frenetic pace of the song that never stops is heaven.
Farewell... to this land's cheerless marshes Hemmed in like a boar between archers1 Her very Lowness with her head in a sling I'm truely sorry but it sounds like a wonderful thing "I say, Charles, don't you ever crave To appear on the front of the Daily Mail Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil?" And so I checked all the registered historical facts And I was shocked into shame to discover How I'm the 18th pale descendent Of some old queen or other This slaps so hard that it took me on a long journey to discover if this verse about the prince being in his mother bridal vail 🫠🫥 such powerful force behind his wordplay 👏
Kept listening to this album when I was a student in Manchester back in 1996. All my housemates told me to stop listening to it as it was depressing the fuck out of them!
Do yourself a favor and watch the official video directed by Derek Jarman to get the full power & context of the track. The release of the video in 1986 was a key career peak & major statement. More "Rock" Smiths tracks: - Girl Afraid - Bigmouth Strikes Again - Barbarism Begins At Home - Handsome Devil - Nowhere Fast
All human societies have "monarchs" even if they no longer call them that. The American President is as cruel and powerful as almost any monarch ever has been, Richard III couldn't sentence you to death and then kill you from the air via a drone strike and watch it all happen in real time. I agree most people are servile, but that's also built into human nature it seems. Pure anarchy sounds great on paper until you live in it. The British Monarchy has, over the last ten centuries held 4 nations that truly and utterly hate each other together and stops them at least in part from killing each other. I think part of the reason that the UK is disintegrating in front of our eyes is the decline in the monarchy.
I could listen to that drum beat at the start all day long, not a big fan of the song though. Can't really make out the lyrics and it all sounds a bit experimental to me

Morrissey could sing the menu off Mac Donald’s with Johnny playing along and it would still break your heart or make you laff

London Bridge isn't down yet.
You should react to twenty-four hours by joy division
Monarchy maintains an establishment where certain/most folks are servile. It's rather pathetic & embarrassing.
