This song is about unrequited love. And the definitive "no" (at 5.0 min) at the end. Great outro. My fave song, a hidden gem. Not universally known or quoted. But one of their best.
People say you die twice: first when you yourself die, and second when you're last remembered. This song is about the reverse, where the person "half dies" because they're not noticed by anyone. Which is so much more sad than the former. You're sort of half dead when you're lonely.
I would say Morrissey’s lyrics are generally more metaphorical, it’s more the sensation of dying as opposed to actually dying. He generally writes a lot about being on his own and separation anxiety, and appears to feel it’s inevitably his love ones will move on and forget him. This is a major trope of his writing. The story is introspective, the lyrics aren’t spoken but are his thoughts and emotions. He often writes from that dramatic and vulnerable part of the mind where dying is the only solution to love spurned. This couples with his trademark wail that similarly conveys this anguish, it’s literally both a plea for help and a cry of pain and, suggests an otherworldly quality to the listener. I don’t know if there are many, or any, lyricists that convey this state of mind so effectively and consistently. It’s also called “Well I Wonder”
I was missing those Smiths reactions. Great choice! And Happy Birthday! Congratulations! Greetings from Brasil/Brazil. P. S.: I suggested this one too. Glad you did it. A suggestion: Jack the ripper (live version) by Morrissey.
Happy birthday! Been a joy to watch your Smiths journey, great vid as always. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's dead if you haven't already heard it. Hope it manages to keep you entertained throughout the runtime!
I just discovered this song this week having been there for ghe Smiths in 1:35 real time in College but I had the "How soon is now " on 12 inch so I never bought this Lp Lo
The curveball though is that final word he utters which is not on the lyrics......NO... Damn that seems so personal and defiant whoever it was meant for? Once again he leaves us wondering. Hmm...
An awesome track that should've been an A-Side instead of being relegated to a B-Side. That opening bass and closing raindrops just adds that deft little touch to a nice melody.
Great reaction. I don't like hearing you read someone's assumed definitive interpretation of the lyrics, of all Morrissey lyrics. Your personal interpretation is far more important and Morrissey's intention was to reach his fans or the listener directly and for them to identify in their own personal way. As a fan of 39 years I am really annoyed when someone thinks they have been supremely anointed to write the meaning of a Smiths or Morrissey song in some kind of official sense accompanying the song online, especially when done through the lens of today's cultural trends and political agendas. A Smiths song should not be summed up by one person and represented by one person who has the sense of entitlement to make an interpretation as though it's the one and only and therefore no fan or listener need bother to use their own mind. Sharing a personal account of how a song affects you or from what information has been learnt from interviews etc is a different thing and I love reading comments from fans who share information and you can tell when a person is knowledgeable as opposed to someone who has not bothered to read a Smiths biography or Morrissey's autobiography. You're my favourite for Smiths reactions so please don't feel I'm criticizing you! Although you often read what someone has written online, you don't really make that mistake (which is why I hope you'll decide to avoid reading these interpretations) You're reactions are spot on, Wikipedia however is not. Just like how people can't be so simply summed up, a Smiths song can't always be so simply summed up.
By far the most underrated smiths song I love this.
I think it's his movement between his usual singing voice and falsetto that makes him unique, very few singers do that.
You are ignorant. You clearly have no idea what "underrated" means. Please, please don't comment again.

Absolutely. Nothing to do with dying. I am infatuated with you but you don't even notice me.

Great reaction. My favourite Smiths song. I’ve really missed your Smiths reactions over the last month or so, so this was a nice treat.
More to come!
A absolute masterpiece 🤣🤣always makes me cry, perfect song by the most perfect band I have ever heard.💯♥️♥️😭😭
Morriseys combination of his voice and lyrics , marrs guitar create ahauntingly beautiful yet sad song.

Your comment is a perfect example of a fan speaking from knowledge.
Andy Rourke my friends... the bass line. RIP.
What a fantastic song the smiths are great
Look! It's my song!:) Glad to see you getting back at the smiths - wish you all the best!
This is one of my faves. It's just plain amazing.
I love that when Morrissey's voice cracks at around 3:09 it sounds like the guitar.
One of my favorite Smiths songs ever!!
Best smiths album in my opinion. Great, great album 🙏
Nice, clean and groovy. Enjoyed that. Great reaction as usual........Oh, and Happy Birthday.

Morrissey- ‘I’ve changed my plea to guilty’ live on the jonathan ross show
Moz has been known to ask people to remember him at gigs
Good to know!
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore is another great one. Definitely need to listen. Keep up the good work
Thanks! Will do!
Great rection to a song that I've seriously underrated. Thanks for putting it to my attention!

Superb baseline by Andy.

Thank you!
beautiful song 👌👌
Hermosa canción, quetal si intentas con algo de Cocteau Twins ???
That song is a door. Once you traspases it you became a Smithslover
To whom this may concern, (you know who you are) please keep me in mind
Nice reaction. Keep it up :)
I think it is more hoping that this person is abe to recthis existence. He wants that relationship but it escapes him
Great song, could it be Mr Brightside by The Killers or This Night Has Opened My Eyes by The Smiths next?
Hope the next reaction will be The Smiths - Last Night i Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
I have to agree with your reaction, exactly what I always thought the lyrics were about, try a reaction to The Cramps “Garbage Man” their a great band
Good reaction
The curveball though is that final word he utters which is not on the lyrics......NO... Damn that seems so personal and defiant whoever it was meant for? Once again he leaves us wondering. Hmm...
You should check out some Morrissey solo. Boxers and First of the gang to die are 2 favourites.
The rain at the end...that's Mancunian rain. The Smiths. Made in Manchester.
An awesome track that should've been an A-Side instead of being relegated to a B-Side. That opening bass and closing raindrops just adds that deft little touch to a nice melody.
One day I was driving and right as the rain started falling in the song, it started in real life. It was quite a lovely coincidence.
I see your ghost - The Lathums 👻👻
Wonderful track Here hope you love love you
One of my favorites from them!
Oh yes…
Try Duran Duran "the chauffeur"... The deftones cover is pretty good too

Viva Morrissey
It's nice you listen to the whole song and don't keep pausing it and talking
There maybe better tracks on other smiths albums, but meat is murder is consistently brilliant all the way through.
Indeed, I'm afraid you were totally off on the sense behind the words.
