In typical Honda style, solving a problem no-one knew we had and pulling it off perfectly… 👍
If you do not know you have a problem, why would you look for a solution ? BEV are a solution to a problem that does not exist...
Typical Honda style making great quality stuff but still somehow tame and boring.
Seems a good system, might be the sort of thing that allows me to keep riding as I get older
As I've previously mentioned, this is really brilliant. Even with E-Clutch 'switched on', it appears it's still possible to change gears in the 'old school fashion', at any time if one so desires.
I can't see this not proving a success for Honda. If so, just watch the other Japanese manufacturers follow suit with their own systems.
This is NOT an automatic in anyway. It just removes using the clutch for the rider, IF so desired. Nothing more.
So clever.
Well done Honda! 👏👏
I've mentioned it in your first video. E-Clutch makes the DCT redundant. Can still be ridden with clutch, tried and tested gearbox style. In my eyes this is a winning tech.
yeah, but some people want the automatic. I would rather have the e-clutch. I love my Rebel 1100 DCT, but I cannot stand riding it in auto mode, I only run it in manual mode, so the e-clutch would work fine.
See? This is why this channel rocks. An unscheduled follow up purely to answer viewers’ FAQs - just great to see that level of appreciation of your audience. Excellent work, sir!
Thank you Jez!
E-clutch is a great idea. Thx for the follow-up Andy.
No problem 👍
Proper practical assessment rather than someone just ragging it. To me it looks like the perfect compromise, easier than a manual and more confidence inspiring than a dct. Nice one Andy.
Thanks Simon.
Less than an hour after watching your initial cb650r e-clutch video and my questions and criticisms have been well and truly answered. Looks like a great system if a little ugly. It really helps those who just want the convenience of an auto clutch and it's of great benefit to those who have unfortunately lost function of their left hand. I hope BMW offer a thumb switch gear shift option for those riders who can't use a left foot gear shift as well.
Brilliant system, go and ride one, still DCT for me👍
I agree, it is a bit ugly, but it's acceptable considering the benefits it brings, and it seems to work very well. Hopefully in the future, as technology improves, the Honda E-Clutch system will become less intrusive and shrink in size, but it's a very good first effort, well done Honda. 👍
one thing you can't afford to do is drop it it on the right which is the most common side to drop in this part of the world, dread to think how much replacement parts would cost and I doubt there's many crash bung offerings out for this if they even bother as can't see this been a huge seller for honda
@@jezza117 It's only £100. Probably cheaper than a decent set of crash bungs anyway.
@@jezza117I’m not so sure, I think it would sell.
Great follow-up video. Very informative Andy . 😄👍
Thanks 👍
Great video. Honda is really smart, in the way they did not completely redesign the bike, to be dedicated only to the E-clutch setup. Honda put the entire mechanism on the side of the motor. That black cap is only one third of the E-clutch. The lower two thirds is below that black cap and it looks to me like the entire assembly can be removed for service which is just plain Honda smart. I would recommend getting some form of fall protection on this bike as soon as you bought it. But I am really happy that the the management and engineers at Honda, are continuing to support motorcycle riders worldwide, by continuing to innovate in common sense ways. This and the , very dependable ( it turns out), automatic transmission motorcycle are really impressive.
Great system for heavy traffic area. I’m looking forward to see it here in the States. Great review.
The Honda CB650R is a brilliant bike. I had one a couple of years. Did 36000km on it.
My old body needed footrests lower down (easy job with a pair of brackets) and a higher/taller handlebar. Scrambler type. And that was fine. Really easy to handle the power since it comes gradually. So smooth. And now looking better with those new designed air intakes.
I might go back to own one when I'm done with my lovely Duke 790.
Thank you mr Flyer. I've always enjoyed your films. Cheers!
It looks complicated, but mechanically it's not, the two motors are doing exactly the same job turning the clutch lever shaft (probably two motors to make the e clutch unit slimmer) they do not do separate jobs. Mechanically, it looks very well made with proper bearing gear train, not plain bushes. The clever bit is the ECU that takes all sensor inputs and decides when to pull the clutch in and when to let it out. Well done Honda.
@TheMissendenFlyer I've been watching your videos for years now, and as your videos are aimed at regular motorcyclists, just like 95% of us, I find them so interesting and relevant! Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
Glad you like them!
Great instructive video, Andy those clever Honda engineers have really done it again. I think this is a game changer, what's your opinion
Well presented and fair review Andy. I think older joint riddled malady and newby types will love that control system.
What a brilliant idea. Fantastic, I want one. Thanks for sharing this.
Our pleasure!
Appreciate the follow up. Clean and simple system.
Really well answered nothing like the real world out on the bike and doing it on camera nice one
Cheers Andy, much appreciated the follow up.
Thanks for the follow-up, looks like Honda have thought this through, I'm impressed!
Couldn't resist this though:
"See, it's all floppy -- as the actress said to the bishop"
Excellent little bank holiday bonus video Andy thank you. And great to see you covering real life bike use and answering our questions 👍👍
No worries
Great add on to your first review, answered a lot of questions. Thanks
No problem 👍
Adding to the BMW system. The BMW system works basically like the Honda DCT with the foot shifter, but operates the clutch similar to the e-clutch. You can select it as manual, shifting with the foot or automatic, bike shifts on its own but you can manually override with the foot shifter. It seems though like BMW does not have shifters on the handle bar and I haven´t seen or figured out, if there are different automatic modes, like with the DCT.
Thanks for answering the questions. Everything worked as I expected but was nice to see, that it seems to work very well in those situations.
Interesting video and well explained, have to try one sometime, Honda are never afraid to try new things.
Nice clear explanation of how this works. For anyone who has a problem pulling in the clutch lever or even using their foot controls may I suggest the Honda Forza 350. 😊
Nicely done!
This is probably one of the most interesting videos I´ve seen here. Thx so much!!!
Happy to hear that!
Great follow up, answered all the questions, the slow speed control around the car park was really impressive, what a well thought out system, I would definitely by an e clutch version if I was buying a Honda with the option.
Excellent video, answered the rest of my questions. I’m really intrigued by this and must test ride one soon.
Glad it was helpful!
Great questions and answers. I had many of those questions. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. This is what customer service, was once upon a time, like. Thanks Andy!
🍻🍻🍻
Any time!
Thanks for the information of the e-clutch 👍👏
It’s a good video showing how the system works in the real world I’d be very tempted by this system
What an excellent video. Real world questions answered. Just how it should be. Well done Andy.
Thanks 👍
i'v been waiting for someone to do this kind of video about the Eclutch i think i might have to have a ride on one after watching that, honda are very forward thinking i have the DCT on mine this looks a winner as well.
I’m glad bike manufacturers are starting to offer options like this. A friend of mine has more or less stopped riding because his arthritic hands aren’t dexterous enough for riding but I’ll send this to him, it might let him keep going. My issue is knackered toe joints on my left foot so the Beemer option sounds interesting but it’ll be expensive no doubt.
I do not care too much about this contraption as such, but I loved the birdsong in the background.
haha i more or less think the same, but aint too bothered about the birsdsong either 😀
@@Bob-ts2tu Now that again is your personal loss.
Another excellent video Andy, very informative. It'll be interesting to do a future comparison with the BMW system as it does away with the clutch lever completely. 😀👏🏼👍🏍
Thanks for a very informative follow up.
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid. So useful. Many thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Good stuff Andy! It's what it says on the can...its an e clutch not a e gearbox 😂 it's does everything a manual bike will do without a clutch....where as DCT auto style change gear for you. I like the sound of BMWs new 'auto' as it sounds much like the gear shirft option you can get on the DCT africa twin...which mens you can use gear shift instead of paddles...which I really think IS the best of both worlds. Not available on latest generation NCs unfortunately. Nice bonus video...cheers
Thank you for the added information!
No problem!
Excellent Andy great to see the other areas.. I like the bike and think Honda have made an excellent job with this 😊 Pete
Extremely useful video, much appreciated.
Glad to hear it!
Brilliant bonus Mr Fly! Thanks for answering the questions so quickly. I'm even more impressed by the bike now!
Thank you for watching!
You're welcome, you're running one of my favourite channels and the content is always top notch 👍
@@michaelmclarney1994 You are too kind sir!
Liking the idea of how versatile the e-clutch is. However, Honda DCT user here…. and I would buy a full auto versus the e-clutch due to the fact, Im either a one or the other person, having the option of a clutch only adds to faff FOR ME.
And that’s why I have DCT. I will however be trying an e-clutch as it is piquing my curiosity….
Fantastic video …. Responding to viewers comments, top service!
Interesting! A step up from my C90!
Not really ...
By time I saw your video in the States there was already 75 comments. This proves your audience is interested and like me always value your testings. Maybe other manufacturers will see this and decide to update their motos. Like a fuel guage or gear indicator. This would increase the price for the people who can't count shifts or reset the trips when fueling. I think a "Lift Assist" on big, heavy bikes is the next thing. Those heavy GS's are a bear to lift when fully loaded. Lol. 👍👍5🏍🙋♂️
I wish they's put a reverse on the big GS......
nice content! hope this bike will came to my country
Very informative TMF. I wasn't aware of the imminent BMW system. Although I did hear of a similar Yamaha system coming out soon. They seem to have opted for the shift buttons approach, so a kind of semi-auto bike equivalent somewhat like the paddle shift in a lot of cars now. Interesting times.
Hi andy been waiting for this, a fantastic system!
Well done Honda.... Real world improvements.. Thanks for great explanation Andy
My pleasure!
Great in depth video..👌
Thank you 🙂
cheers. That was informative and clear.
No problem 👍
Thanks, that is very helpful, nice system
You're welcome
I think it IS ugly, but it is amazing! Thanks for adding this video Andy. It is very interesting and informative. Great info !
Very nice follow up video
Thanks 👍
Great idea, it can be a kind of solution for riders who don't like a DCT transmission. Great job Andy. Thanks
No problem 👍
Honda's DCT on AT for example was too different than normal riding style, though it worked well. Bikes are for fun, at least these expensive ones and two switches on the handlebars to chenge gears felt very digital. Glad they quickly got to the drawing board to design even better solution than DCT. This is just perfect. It's best of both worlds, works better than quick shifter even on high end bikes, is a bolt on attachment so it's not a gearbox mod to have too many things changed on the normal bikes, and is cheap. A solid home run
Hi Andy nice presentation thanks my questions answered too.....😊
No problem 👍
A very good video. Not verbose.
Appreciated. Best wishes Andy.
Very informative video Andy.Very much appreciated.Hope that Honda Australia bring in a full power version with the E-Clutch,not just the Lams version. To nice a bike to be restricted like it is here!
Great video explained situations I didn’t think about after watching the first video,my darling wife would love this option as often when on long rides she complains of pain in her left hand and on a Honda clutch lever which is very light anyway.don’t know when this is going to be released in Australia but very interesting option well done Honda.
Yeah, cool that you answered those questions. The only question I have is how well will it hold up? Yes, Honda is known for its bullet-proof-ness, but not in all areas. My ridgeline truck, early 6 speed transmission has many known issues, hence they switched to a nine speed gearbox, which apparently, is much more durable. I know this isn’t a car channel, but like any manufacturer, that brings out something new, there’s a strong likelihood of it needing to be tweaked as time goes by. That looks like a lot of small gears in that mechanism, while being pretty far away from the oil pan.
Thanks Andy!
No worries!
Thanks for the extra video. This looks really interesting.
One point in terms of reliability based on my Honda DCT experience from a Forza - it ** may ** need the battery fully charged for the gearbox selector to work. On the DCT bikes, if the battery is flat the gearbox won't work even after jump starting. That surprised me as I'd presumed the alternator output would ensure enough volts are available for the control circuitry so it is possible that this is due to some built in microcontroller code designed to avoid damage or malfunction whilst the bike is being ridden. I was stranded twice because of this. (Tracker draining the battery). I never leave my bike for extended periods off charge now.
No me neither - all my bikes ar eon trickle chargers all the time....
I like the idea of it. I fractured my wrist years ago and prolonged riding with clutch use (or heavy traffic) causes pain and fatigue. This would alleviate that but without having a full auto.
Thanks for the additional information, I find the concept very interesting. Being a Honda, it will be reliable too. 😎 Ride Safe in that beautiful countryside 🇺🇸
A mate of mine cynically enquired whether that lump was a coffee thermos. I was more reminded of what Mae West once said: "Is that an E-Clutch in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"
Great tech for sure.Thks.
Great idea
Excellent follow-up Andy and appreciate your efforts in producing this video to answer these questions. Cheers.
Brilliant video Andy. Thank you so much for that.
No worries
Great little follow up video Mr Flyer, and answered any question I would of asked. Definitely one to investigate further, thank you.
Yeah it's an interesting thing. I'm not sure who precisely it's aimed at but I'm sure this is the answer to someone's requirements. An alternative gear select on the grip would probably be a huge bonus for riders without full use of their left hand like you say
Hi Andy, this sounds like a good option for me, as my arthritis is getting worse the older I get, and holding a clutch in when city riding hurts.I previously had the DCT africa twin which was great for my issues, but in the end the bike itself was to heavy. However when I tried to book a test ride on the a e-clutch CB650R, I was informed that dealers were only being issued with the CBR650R version, Which as you know has a completely diferent riding position. Not really suited for us older riders with issues. You did say on your first vid that you were on a press bike, and having tried to ask Honda myself, Which is a whole other level of faffery by the way, You no longer just call the customer service number and ask your question. It has to go through what I was told,an escalation proccess, which will supposedly be answered by email. I am still awaiting that responce. So for the sake of us subscribers, I was wondering if you can ask honda if what Two separate dealers told me is correct. That us possible Honda customers cant actually get a ride on the bike we would be interested in buying. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Sounds a bit poor doesn’t it…
Morning Andy, I was impressed with your first demo of this system and that has only been consolidate by you answering most, if not all operational circumstances. I personally still like having the gear change on my foot,as that's what my auto function is already used too and especially as most modern bikes already have too many buttons on the bars as it is. Still can't get over the price for this tec, especially when you think you'd spend more than that having to stick a hugger on to stop crap flying into your rear shock. Talking of shocks or lack of, BMW £1,000 🤔. I swear they'd charge an entry fee ,if they could get away with it. I'm sure, as I commented before, Honda will work on the looks, but as far as I'm concerned, if it means it stays at this price, I'd put up with it and certainly wouldn't tick the option it it was a grand.
The first bike with a quickshifter I've ever owned is my current Suzuki gsx8s, I find it to be a nice improvement. This is next level and the direction we're heading in I think.
Thanks nice and well explained
You are welcome
Great Video Andy. I cant really see any downside expect maybe if you drop the bike that e-clutch housing looks like it would take the brunt of the impact.
Pure witchcraft, what a fantastic invention, perfect for an older rider with the ageing hands and the start of arthritis, absolutely fantastic video asking all the questions asked by the viewers, would definitely be interested in this on perhaps a Transalp as that current model would be to small for me at over 6ft.
Cracking video thanks Andy.👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
from the US , Hey thanks for the follow up . What about LONG RIDE 2+ HOUR seat comfort?
I’m impressed because there is no clunk going into first. I wonder how well it would work on a high torque twin. I would definitely choose it if it was an option on a twin. Thanks for the extra vid.
My pleasure
According to some you need Valentino Rossi to explain E-clutches to us, but Andy does a good job too, and now I want an E-clutch on my bike. Let me check on E-bay to see if Honda makes them for 30 years old BMW's. On second thought, it is probably more useful if I make a cup of coffee instead.
these 2 vids on the E Clutch are probably the best i've seen! most just show how it works but this vid going through questions people have asked is excellent! few things i never really thought about. i do thing it's an excellent system, would i have it? maybe, not a lot extra and you still have the choice of not using it
Exactly - in heavy traffic it would be great.....
Thanks, Questions answered.
Glad to help!
Very interesting. I think I want a bike with one. I imagine starting in second is no problem either. There seems to be no downside. Ride it as one wishes.
Correct!
Would be interesting to know how it performs in tricky situations, like a very steep incline, uphill or downhill, where I’d probably feather the clutch to modulate the power to the wheel
That is pretty cool
Your on it Andy 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi Andy, I've got to correct something you mentioned about the DCT during the hill start section of this vid. The DCT does not hold on an incline whilst in gear. If you are on a DCT in 1st gear, the bike will roll back until you accelerate. The clutch does not bite at idle revs. So. In that respect, it performs the same as the e clutch.
Yes true....
Great vid.
Thanks
one of my enjoyments in riding is the downshift > engine braking and that requires timing between the clutch and the rev matching; is this achievable with e clutch and the e gear lever switching?
Thank you for sharing the viewer’s questions. One question that wasn’t talked about is the reliability and durability of the e clutch. I wonder will it stand the test of time?
We shall see!
Good afternoon mr f very interesting it apparently Warks the same as my Volvo FH 4 truck drives like a manual but fully automatic
I imagine a modern E-clutch will work just fine, as it isn't exactly a new technology. The Smart City Coupe (450) already had an E-clutch and that car was introduced in the late 90's. I drove a City Coupe and it worked just fine in normal driving. It didn't like speedbumps, as the E-clutch tends to immediately engage as you hit the speedbump and then disengage almost immediately again as you've cleared the speedbump. The solution for my City Coupe was to let go of the accelerator just before the speedbump and it would just ignore the bump. The second thing it didn't really like was the constant speeding up and slowing down at creeping speed in traffic jams. But I imagine the much lower weight of a bike and 30 years of improvement in technology will have sorted out that problem.
and before the Smart, back in the 50's/60's, lots of cheap cars had e-clutches buried in the gear-stick knob allowing foot free changes! Some drivers damaged those cars by forgetting to take their hand off the lever!
@@drdoolittle5724 I remember driving one of the first NSU RO80 on British roads in the late 60’s . That had a micro switch in the gear knob that disengaged the clutch allowing pedal free gear changes.
Excellent and quick response to viewer's question's, nice one Mr Flyer, and ooh, new jacket, new fashion update incoming?👍
Yes - stay tuned!
Good video TMF
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow, impressive system. Good Ol' Big Red always introducing new tech.
Ah I see you’ve been doing your Motojitsu drills!
Thanks for answering good and sensible questions. Honda seems to have the system thought through thoroughly.
Fantastic UA-cam review from you Mr & Mrs Flyer, fabulous technology from Honda 🌟🌟🧡 Thank You, i want one 🧡
