How Developers Break Speedrunning

- Speedrunning often focuses on What happens, but not much attention is paid to why it occurs. For all the effort runners put into breaking a game apart, Developers play a key role in defining what is possible.

Ripto having different phases based on % beaten is quite odd. Good vid!
I get what they were going for but it's certainly an unusual choice, and the first phase only needing fire is pretty funny.
Tomba does the same thing... in reverse. The final boss does FEWER attacks the more game you have completed, with some attack patterns that are unused without theoretical skips.
Glad to see my speed game being featured in a video but here's a few corrections. World 1 can be beaten with 0 keys and "super jumps" can be performe without the swing animation. The swing increases the window of time you have to press the X button :). Other than those few small things you covered sly 1 perfectly!
The title of this video is very badly picked, it sounds like the video would be about how devs try to prevent speedruns, or how they fix glitches
Initially thought this video was gonna be about how speedgames get patched by the developers due to bug fixes. But seeing instances on how glitches get implemented by them intentionally or not is something that's just as interesting to think about. These videos are like the exact shower thoughts I have when it comes to speedrunning, and I'm glad to see these get approached in a style that's unique and entertaining as yours. Lovin' it man, keep it going!
I'm a big fan of having the final boss behind a locked gate in the starting hub and seeing how people skip right to them lol
Bit of a mistake correction: In the Minecraft section, when 1.13 is mentioned, the Prismarine temples are shown on screen, implying they were added in 1.13, but they were actually added in 1.8.
Alright, now pedantry aside, great video as always, guys.
I wish there were more Sly games, really fun series.
I appreciate how you manage to bring real-world historic examples into your videos, nice
Top tier video, very creative concept. I do wish you had included the ratchet and clank games, since you had already mentioned spyro. Those games have an even deeper history with the developers contributing new things. Ratchet 2's first major glitch was discovered by them, and they left it in because it was cool and kept it in as an ng+ bonus.
They also worked with the speedrun community to leave in certain things for the PS4 and PS5 entries, and invited xem to perform a run of the first 3 games (similar to jeremy thompson)
(Made a silly comment before as I had accidentally skipped the part of the video going over exactly what I mentioned lmao) but its so cool to see TY speedrunning and groundswims mentioned in here! There's actually some more-recent evidence supporting the circumstances around groundswimming, where it was found that Ty can be forced into a groundswim state in old-console versions through changing a value in memory. This memory value just so happens to relate to the distance Ty can be from the water for a swim, so it really does seem the implementation of such bug was a complete accident, yet its made TY speedrunning and general challenges more interesting and fun, so good on the devs for keeping it in
I'm pretty sure the change making it so that you could set your spawn point without sleeping was in 1.15, not 1.3
That was the change that made it so you could set your spawn during the day
small correction, it was 1.3 trades which were completely random and 1.8 which has ordered progression (and technically 1.3 trading is possible (1.4 fixed infinite restock) but it's a brutal category)
i thought this was gonna be a video about how updates ruin speedrun strats
the rome tangent makes me think you've been listening to mike duncans stuff
Haven't gotten to it yet, but History of Rome is on my list to listen to
It bugs me when people call a game "broken" because it has exploits that don't get in the way of casual play.
Big Rigs and Sonic '06 are broken. It's difficult/impossible to just play through them normally without encountering a problematic bug.
Ty and Spyro aren't broken. You can play through them from start to finish and everything will work as it should. They're _breakable_ but you have to deliberately break them.
We remember getting swim in air a few times on enter the dragonfly. Then again it's enter the dragonfly
Hey I just found out about your channel and you’re making some quality content man. I appreciate you and am now subbed
I was not expecting the oblivion sound track music
Bro you're one of the most underrated youtube! your videos are amazing. Its really obvious you put alot of hard work into it!
I really liked the part where you talked about How Developers Break Speedrunning! Very cool!
Oh boy
Your channel is very informative and concise. I know you will get more eyes watching. Keep up the nice videos.
I thought this was going to be about how developers prevent speedrunners from breaking their games, and was interested to watch a video about that
I speedrun spyro and you got a bit of info on proxy’s wrong you said the devs just didn’t want to fix it but actually it was implemented as a safety measure incase spyro ever got stuck but speedruners ended up abusing it
I really like the theory that they introduced the glitch on purpose on ty, especially because it's way more sensible then whatever the hell yanderedev has been doing
Sly 1 is one of my most played and favorite games if all time
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
Wait, worlds have multiple strongholds?
17:55 how do you find the stronghold with only one? Won’t it break?
Not necessarily. I don’t recall the exact odds, but I think it’s something like one in three break. If you position yourself precisely you can use the angles created by throwing the eye twice to use trigonometry to locate the stronghold rather than following an eye the whole time.
@@Wyattporter that explains the calculator controversy
I love your history anecdotes ^^
really interesting video especially for a non speedrunner like myself.
I love watching these videos to learn world history
Insomniac was self destructive. They released a game every single year!
Living up to the name.
