I Cycled 100km Every Day For A Week & This Is What Happened!

  • After Mark's challenge of a half marathon per day over on GTN, he thought it was only fair to challenge Hank to something similar on the bike - 100km a day for a week, 700km of riding in total. Riding your bike 100km every day is a challenge for most of us, especially around a full-time job! Hank was going to need help, so we teamed up with our friends Nuzest to help fuel him with their plant-based nutrition, and Whoop to monitor the effect this challenge had on his body.

      A bit over 500k last year, as part of a challenge with some colleagues to see who could bike the longest in a week. Somehow I made second place despite being overweight and usually only doing 20k a day.
      It was very hard, but worth it.

    • @sevenrats
      @sevenrats 3 роки тому +37

      There's huge difference for the average cyclist between 40km and 100km. For most people 100km is a significant effort mostly because it's simply going to be 4 hours of exercise. Most anyone can move for an hour or two with no issues at all but between 2 and 3 hours fuel starts getting depleted and that last hour hurts. 100 miles is a whole other nut to crack.

      @@ruffianeo3418 I'm an average cyclist I would say. When I race on zwift I finish right in the middle and my Strava times on long segments are right in the middle and I did a 100km (2500ft of climbing) just 3 days ago. It's not hard for me but it's no small effort either. I most certainly pace myself and make certain not to over extend on the climbs. I averaged 15.5 mph. I could go faster but I don't want to risk blowing up. Having to limp back the last 15 miles would be horrible.

    I spent a month in Italy recently and biked just over 2000km in a little over a month which is less than that. The climbs there are BRUTAL, like many miles of double digit climbs like even 16, 18% or more. It's so beautiful I couldn't resist. With every ride I felt a little worse and not recovered I knew I was doing myself in. With the Italian diet I was eating top notch and on vacation I was trying to sleep as much as possible. 2 weeks after the fact and back home I am still not myself. This is definitely overtraining, but I Wasn't trying to train to get faster, I was just riding with "IT SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN" on my mind wanting to experience the scenery, food and countryside there as much as possible before going home. Ouch.

    That seems to be much harder than the regular bike holiday week on Mallorca where we used to do more than 600 km in 5 days each year in March but in brilliant weather conditions in group rides and not around work. That makes a big difference because I don't feel sore and not too tired afterwards. I admire the guides who do this every week over there for months and always riding in the wind. It is really tough when they are guiding the advanced groups which do an average of 27 km/h and more every day. Some of these guides are 60 years old and older. Very impressive.

      Honnestly, anyone can. Without much training (barely zero) I went from New York to Miami in 20 days. Take in mind with gear, clothes etc etc.
      Also take in mind I weighed around 130kg when I left. On all my bicycle trips we tried to average 120km a day. If I can do it, all those skinny trainer guys should easily be able to do it.

      @Jeppelelle 3 роки тому +11

      @@stevenvdstaak6682 yeah sure you did, a fit guy like Hank suffered through 100km for a week but an unfit guy can do it in perpetuity, apparantly, gonna vote for a slight doubt on that one, either you exagerating the time & distance or you werent as unfit as you think you was, or you road at Z1-2 pace at 10mph average. On some days Chris averaged 30km/h on those rides he did for 107 days. I have biked with unfit beginners and some struggle to even get up to 30km/h & some manage to keep up for about 50k (rare) before bailing. So sure, can some unfit people ride 2’000km at randonne speeds, maybe. Maybe it was unclear but those are not the conditions we where talking about here

    Last year I took a one week vacation ... so ... 2 weekends and 9 days to be on the bike. My goal was 1000km in 9 days, but in the end managed to ride only 915.6km. Sat - 170.1km (5h 52m); Sun - 73km (2h 41m); Mon - 83.8km (2h 42m); Tue - 104.1km (3h 37m); Wed - 104.1km (3h 39m); Thur - 100.2km (3h 31m); Fri - 103km (3h 52m); Sat - 95.9km (3h 14m); Sun - 81.4km (2h 57m)
    My daily fuel for this was... Cheddar cheese, bacon, red paprika, tomato, and either avocado or scrambled eggs. On the ride had some flapjacks with me, energy gel, in one bottle water and in the other carbon drink. After the ride I had some protein drink and to eat either a caesar salad or some pure chicken breast.
    Additional to the rides I had an hour of cross fit training on 4 of the 9 days, so you can imagine how happy my legs were. It took 5 days for the legs to recover to a point where they felt like a part of my body again.
    1000km in 9 days, still a goal.
