- How To Service And Pack Steering Bearings Yamaha FJR1300 - This is specifically for the Yamaha FJR1300 at it's 16,000 service points but it also applies generally to most other bikes as well. Most of this is repeat from the steering bearing re-torque procedure that's due periodically as well, but you need to know how to drop the front end to access the bearings. Use Lithium grease and just wipe out the old. If you see and wear, marks, pitting, rust, damage to the balls, races, cages or any surface - you need to replace the bearings. If not you are good to go and this service in conjunction with no front end impacts will ensure you long life from your steering bearing sets. You need the special spanner and a torque wrench. Torque the lower nut to 37 then 13 ft./lbs. The top nut to 87 and the pinch bolts to 19.

I just performed this service and the video was extremely helpful. One quirk was that I had a very hard time getting the lower bearing re-seated. During the process, one of the bearing balls came dislodged and I had to reset in in place in the race. This caused the steering shaft not to align in the center when I lowered the back. After numerous ups/downs, I finally figured it out. I almost screwed up by damaging the top threads when going up and down. Thankfully, everything turned out fine. Just a word of caution to be careful with those top threads rubbing the top of the steering head.

I have a 2016 Yamaha fjr1300es that has had the steering head bearings oem bearings replaced with tapered bearings. Should the bike handle different because of the tapered bearings vs oem roller bearing? To me my bike feels more sensitive now . And yes the steering head bearings have been properly torqued to factory specs

I recently had pirelli angel street tires put on the bike and immediately after began to experience a noticable vibration through the front end. I immeduately brought the bike back tobhave the tirrs rebalanced. They said tirrs balanced out to zero after weights were installed. I looked over the buke and checked to make sure everthing was tight. U didnt find any loose bolts but i did bring the front wheel to another shop to have them balance the tirrs. They removed the weughts and started over. Thier machines concluded the same weight on the same position using the marker of red dot at valve stem, and said the wheel was spinning true and no issue with the casting of the tirr that would make it wobble. This issue has not gone away and is aggrivating my
carpel tunnel issue. I also dont feel riding the bike at high speeds. I went on the fjr forums and found that this issue is actually common with FJRs. Since steering head bearing re- torque is part of the routine maintenance, i think that is the next thing i should do but ive also heard that some guys go all out and replace the steering head bearings with needle type.do you reccomend this. I dont want to do this twice if i dont have to. Im also wondering if shaft driven bikes have this vibratuon more than chain driven.

This is the kind of service i dread on motorcycles, buying special tools(more often than not), taking apart and greasing shit that i have no business doing. Thus i probably never will unless i keep a bike 4ever(wich probably won't happen either.). Mind you, at this point i haven't watch THE WHOLE thing but for your time and peace of mind i hope you bought and installed new bearings regardless of the condition of the original ones. I seen people on the forums installing roller bearings on FJRs and many other bikes(sturdier longer lasting, don't remember if it numbs your steering feel tho.).
Cool support(although flimsy looking) u got there, i have thought about doing something similar myself.
+JIGA BACHI lol not flimsy in the least an there is zero reason to replace good bearings. If you can't do work yourself I hope you have a real good nearby shop. Motorcycles require a lot of special maintenance.
I do all of it(forks, valve adjst, TB synch, i happen to be an MMI Orlando graduate on Yamaha, Kawasaki & Suzuki.), it just happens that I'm a whiny LAZY bastid.
These days i rather MUCH MUCH MORE ride than be wrenching. Priorities i guess...😉😁

Question...I can't find anywhere the special tool part number and/or name...can you please tell me how to get it? I'm also thinking about buying the bearings and the fork seals just in case. I have an 08 AE that has never been serviced so I'm thinking I may just do everything at once. Regards!!!
Upon further research, I will probably go OEM on the bearings, if you search "tapered head bearing replacement," you will see there are problems with aftermarket tapered replacements.

Can you ever replace the bearings with tapered bearings on your previous fjr1300? I just had mine replaced with tapered bearings. It definitely made my bike turn faster
When we put the bike on the jack can I remove the wheel first to be lighter and easier to work and then torque the Nuts
Or the torque has to be with the wheel on the bike and on the ground ? Does make any difference?

Question. How come i can't remove the bolt from the bottom of my forks? While still attached to the yoke I loosened the top nut and bottom bolt. Removed the forks but cant pull the bolt out. Any advice?

I have had a really annoying loud cracking noise going over bumps, accellerating, decellerating and even pulling the bike onto the stand. Tried everything to find what was loose. Put the bike in for a filter and fluids service, (just because I want the book stamped). They found that the steering bearing needed adjusting and fresh grease....NOISE GONE....happy Tom.

All Balls Racing has tapered bearings for the FJR, they re only around $5.00 more than OEM. Disclaimer: I have no vested interest in All Ball Racing, I am ordering a set today, I learned about them from a video posted from a guy in England.

Thanks for the info ...i have 2013 yamaha . Everytime I apply the rear brake I hear a noise coming from my right rear pads. Sounds like a 10 speed bike. New pads were alrealy replaced.. any idea where to look????
You might want to try removing and cleaning the pads. Sometimes road dust or even small stones can be embedded into the pad and cause the squeal. Also check the condition of the rotor - check for ridges, rust, pits, etc.
Are the torque specs the same for a gen 2 FJR 1300? If not, do you know the torque specs. Thanks for all the videos you do, you have cut my annual maintenance cost down significantly.

If you haven't invested in an expensive wife, you can do this alone. When you want to align the stearing yoke for the top bearing, roll the front wheel backward with your hands and place a piece of 1 inch wooden plank (or eqv.) in front of the tire to avoid it to move forward again. Some finetuning could be needed, but it works.
I find my self with a need to replace the bearing assembly since my FJR is unfortunately stored outside the elements effect it faster than most. Is there a way to remove and replace the bottom bearing without removing the lower pinch bolts?
Nope it all must come apart. Not a fun job.
Did you repack both bearings or just the top? What kind of solvent do like to use to remove old grease from the bearings? I have a Yamaha roadstar 2006 has 19k miles and never repack the bearings , I think is time, my bike is always garage kept and almost never ride in the rain so I expect they are find. Also I have the 16 xsr900 like I mentioned the other day but that one only has 600 miles

is there any reason why you don't take it to a main dealer for maintenance? if you do servicing yourself doe's it not affect the resale value as you haven't service stamps/bills etc.

Must admit I was a little surprised to see balls in there, I'd have expected taper rollers. Having said that balls work plenty well enough, and are far less expensive.
When I was on my season end tour out west I felt some wobble in the steering. I bought the bike with 10,000 miles this summer, and I am just shy of 16,000 now. Any thoughts on weather the bearings are bad, or if I just need to clean and re torque things? Any advise would be great. Keep up the videos! I love having these tech videos for reference.
At the very least, it looks like the steering nuts need to be re-torqued. Most likely the bearings will need to be re-greased or even replaced if damaged or worn.
Yamaha should have used tapered roller bearings and put a zerk fitting in to grease them. I am disappointed in what I see here.
All Balls Racing carries tapered bearings for the FJR, I am going to replace mine with a set.
My little Yamaha XT225 has zerk fittings, and I have to admit, they're pretty sweet.
