  • Yamaha FJR1300 Centerstand Swingarm Lube Points Service 16000 Miles - NOTE: at 33 min I missed a clip, also grease the two end bearings. This is by far the biggest maintenance job for the bike. I blame no one for paying the $1000+ to a dealer to do it all, as long as they do it ALL right. It's a several hour procedure at best and takes a few hundred in tools, some of which you probably don't yet have. I go through it all including reassembly and torque specs with some common problems along the way. It covers:
    side panel removal
    rear wheel removal
    swingarm removal
    center stand removal
    sidestand removal
    side pedals removal
    u-joint removal
    all lube points
The replacement bolts are part # 90101-10004

Thanks Bryan. I just finished doing the dogbone bearings, swing arm, and all the other things you teach us how to do in this video. It took me about 20 hours all told. By far the biggest mechnical challenge I have ever undertaken. I'm a senior, with lots of time, and this is something I thought I'd enjoy learning how to do. The dealership price for all this is well over $700 Canadian dollars, and saving that money has paid for all the tools required to do this job, and many more besides. For those interested: I took 10 pages of notes from this video, and then went thru my notes and ticked each item off as I did it. I made note of the time on the video where each topic was addressed, making it easy to come in from the garage and look at the video again, if I was unclear on something, and then go back out and proceed. Worked like a charm. Thanks again.

For removing cross-head screws, use a hammer type impact driver along with a set of Vessel impact bits. You can find them on eBay for about $10, shipped from Japan. They're proper JIS heads, which are slightly different than Philips bits. You can also get a Vessel 'Impacta' screwdriver, which has a built-in impact driver function. I haven't had a chance to use mine on any difficult screws, unfortunately.Maybe you already have proper JIS bits, but I thought I'd mention it. Good video. I'm considering buying an FJR and it's good to see some maintenance.

Please upvote so people not miss this. In the dogbone pivot assembly there is two more needle bearings that you missed! One at each end. Recommend to remove completly. Pray out the rubber seals and take out the needels ( keep them and clean them in a magnetic tray). Clean hole and bushing and assemblewith new grease. Just did my -12 modell. Never seen grease that was so hard, it was like plastic, came out in pieces!! Cant belive you and everyone else missed this?!

Bryan, thank you for taking the time to make this video! Originally I was letting the dealer do my maintenance as it was prepaid for 4yrs (only $3K at the time when the bike was a year old and I made out like a bandit putting 79K miles on my '13). Alas my maintenance contract ran out in 2018 and I bought my '19 the following spring (from a different dealer). Now I'm getting around to doing the maintenance on the 2013 before selling it and finding the dealer wasn't doing such an awesome job at maintenance. Your video and details certainly helped give me the confidence to tackle the job. I appreciate all you do with trying to help us learn and tackle the maintenance while saving us some $$$ from dealer service. Cheers!

You are right, this both an inspection as well as a lubrication.
However, I would hope that by annually lubricating through a nipple the wear'n'tear would be reduced to such an extend that the inspection is only needed every 32'000 miles or so...

Very nice video. thanks for the great information. A couple of video tips for you. Audio quality is so important. Yours was awesome; very clean. The pacing got a bit quick in the assembly part; it'd still be nice to see each step, even if briefly. Spend some time learning about white balance and exposure. You tended to be all over the map on those. That kind of stuff can be a distraction. Great job.

WRT the rear axle bolt (27MM), a 1 1/16 " SAE wrench will also fit. 1 1/16 and 27MM are virtually identical. Ditto for the front axle bolt. A 7/8 fits that perfectly. If you have those SAE sizes, you can save a few bucks by not buying the metric tools.

On my A model, removing the side panels wasn't necessary. Also my suspension linkage is cast a little bit differently than yours so I'm trying to verify correct installation direction currently. Other than that the A model process is basically identical.
I didn't seem necessary to me to remove the cotter pin from the rear brake lever actuator. I was able to clean and lube the pin without disassembly so I went that route.

A lot to do and I COULD do it but I'd rather pay the dealer. HOWEVER, it's just so hard to find a dealer that won't skip steps. If you want it done right, you've got to do it yourself anymore. My bike was delivered to me with NO gear oil in the rear diff. Was it checked off the assembly list? Of course it was. I didn't catch it until I changed the break-in oil. Obviously, I won't have my bike serviced where I bought it.

Brian great video, it helped me remove both my wheels on my 2018 FJR and take them to the tire store to have new tires mounted. My question, when I tighten the rear nut on the rear axel, If I go above 30 fps, the rear wheel will not turn. I have to keep the nut on a low fps to allow the wheel to move freely. Have I done something wrong with mounting the rear tire back on. I have rode the bike and it rides well but I don't feel comfortable with the rear nut being that loose. Your help would be appreciated.

Bryan, thanks for sharing your labor of love. One of the biggest added benefits of owning this bike right now is your channel. Question. When you cut off the front center stand bolts, what did you use to grab the remaining stud to remove them? Also, I'm assuming there was enough of that stud on the inside of the center stand bracket to grab ahold of, and thread them out clockwise towards the bike's center. Thx

I did find a company that would re build the rear shock after the seals blew, saved me £1800. They had to machine another piston as Yamaha will not supply seals!!

Great videos. Appreciate all your detailed hard work. So this is supposed to be done every 16000 miles? What a joke. I was going to buy one, but not anymore.

@@TwoWheelObsession they make cars with low maintenance why not bikes. Remember when we had grease joints under the car. Why can't the make a gréase point for the swing arm? I'm sure they could.

Truly excellent 'how to' video. Would probably tackle this now whereas I would not have before just reading the book!!. What's the ballpark for a dealer to do this service?

To anyone doing work on any Japanese bikes, do yourself a favour and invest in JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdrivers. Philips =/= JIS, Philips are designed to cam out, and cause stripping, by design so you can't over torque assembly. JIS is straight cut, no cam grooves, and does not cam out. Metric bikes = Metric tools.

I can't wait to put miles on an FJR and do this. But, first, I have to sell the Honda Shadow. Wife's orders.

This may have been asked already somewhere but.....why would Yamaha make a bike that needs this much maintenance at 16k and this much work to do it? Spraying these points with penetrating grease or using zerk fittings not in cards here? I'm a new FJR owner (09 AE, 77k) and dreading this to the point of selling the bike for an easier bike to work on. Tell me I'm wrong (because I really do like the bike). Or at least is all this really necessary or nice to do stuff. Using this great video, I think I can do it instead of paying a stealership but gee, one commenter said he had 20 hours in it. Man!
