I often think parents do all this managing and pushing for two reasons. #1: Because they feel guilty for not being there for them and #2: Because they are all trying to be better parents than their parents were. If you want to be a better parent, the only thing that really matters is to connect with your children. SEE them. LISTEN to them. They are individuals from the moment they're born. Get to know THEM. And accept and love them for what they are, no matter what that is. Every child has a good and a bad. Focus on the good parts of their personality and discourage the bad parts. But don't ignore it. It's part of who they are. Also, set a good example. Parents are a child's first teachers. Teach them well.

They're all completely overprotected or completely neglected. I'm not the "hurr everything was better in the past" type, but when I was a child, not that long ago, there sure were a lot less ridiculously overprotective parents that don't let their child do anything and neglectful single parents where the child has no supervision or love and is basically just ignored.
