Anyone who saw the final Genesis tour must put Phil at the top of the list of true rock 'n' roll heroes. Despite obvious pain and discomfort, he delivered 110% like he always has. I will miss seeing him on tour. Peace and good health, Phil.
I saw Phil live at this Tour in Manchester UK back in 2004 and this song gave me goosebumps at the time and was and is the best live song ever. Whole evening was epic.
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).
You could make a list of everyone he's played with, but the list of people he HASN'T played with is probably shorter. His Wikipedia page is embarrassing as to his credits.
Yep, and on drums was Chester Thompson - he and Phil used to do drum duets, check the videos ("Drums, Drums, and more Drums" I think it's titled). ua-cam.com/video/LVRHiSIeuAI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=StonedTripper
@@L33Reacts Leland Sklar has his own YT channel where he talks about all the artists and the songs. Its like an epic backstage tour through five decades of musik history - and of course he plays the bass lines of all this songs. Since I saw his video about "In the air tonight" I hear much more of the bass in this live performance. It perfectly supports the drums.
I've seen Phil Collins twice solo, and twice with Genesis. I've seen many many concerts over the years, and Phil Collins is as charismatic and commanding a presence on stage as anybody in rock. Funny, dramatic, intense, he literally has the audience eating right out of his hand. And that voice... Powerful and iconic.😮😮 Never disappoints.
Finally! Everyone seems to have heard the song, but few have seen this live. It is the best performance I have ever seen and one of the reasons I am a Collins fan. He is a beast on drums but can turn around and melt your heart with a ballad. Someone commented that he hoped he could be half as cool as Phil at this age. (53 yrs. old) Paris loves Phil Collins. His solo work is amazing.
Yes, it was Chester also on his drum set. He's the main drummer for the Phil Collins solo tours, since Phil does much more vocal/frontman work than he did with those Genesis tours; with Genesis, there was more opportunity to play drums, during those long instrumental sections, for instance. Now, i don't mean to say that Phil didn't play at all, on his solo tours -- of course he did, but he was doing more straight Pop songs on his solo tours, where he would play a lot of piano and sing his stuff, with his backing band.
I was lucky enough to see this same performance in Florida on his First Final Farewell Tour...entire show was amazing and if you haven't seen the drum battle at the beginning between him and Chester, you need to check that out....definitely a musical GOAT
This live version really breathed life back into this song for me. Great fun watching your whole face light up when he came in on the drums. As for his singing, he belts it out while slamming those toms. This isn't Don Henley lightly tapping Hotel California. Phil is the man on drums!
You will probably recognise Daryl Stuermer on guitar and Chester Thompson who both used to both play on genesis tours and also supported Phil’s solo work as well
He was in the zone of zone when he wrote "I dont' Care anymore" on the same album Face value. See him live singing this song in 1982, young Phil and angry Phil... Awesome...
@@L33Reacts I saw Genesis live at knebworth in the early 90's absolutely phenomenal concert . Phil came on dressed in just jeans and a black T shirt and proceeded to sing effortlessly and just as good as a studio recording ,and as you say he doesn't take himself too seriously, like just another day at the office .. This track you just reacted to is absolutely untouchable in pure talent and quality .. I used to play drums years ago so I know what I see is top level drumming .. Thanks for your reaction you summed it all up perfectly 👍 .. Subbed
Leland Sklar on bass, I follow him on YT. He's so many stories and has played with Phil forever and so many others, you would not believe how many times he's recorded with many artists. 😲 Yea, that's Chester. He too has been with Phil/Genesis a long time. When they play together, incredible. Find the Genesis "Abacab" live at Wembley, fantastic drumming from both!! Have the greatest respect for Phil in understanding the incredible pain he endured while playing. He's a legend, very glad to have seen him and Genesis a few times!! 🔥 P.S. new sub. ☺️
I think I have watched every reactor of this song because it is just one of those classic live performances that you can watch and listen to over and over again. I did send you in two more PayPal requests for live shows. Even though you cannot compare Don Henley on the drums to Phil, the guitar duo at the end is unforgettable. Procol Harum is another must see live shows. A band from the late 60's, Gary Brooker (RIP) has a voice that lasted 60 years as pure as it ever was. Both are experiences you won't want to miss. Get well my friend!!
Been a fan of Genesis since 1974. Saw them on every tour but the last one. And most of the members solo careers many times. Hackett, Gabriel, and Phil. Took my son to this concert . Great times
I remember seeing Phil on TV as a child and i was scared to death because he looked like the ultimate villain to me.😅 But then i looked into his eyes and those were the most gentle eyes i've ever seen.. his music still gives me so much, forever thankful for this lovely piece of art on two legs🖤
He's now in a wheelchair after suffering a spinal injury since 2007, which occurred during a Genesis reunion... he was brilliant in the film buster and the drum piece was used in a Cadbury advert .
Phil Collins said in 2017: “But it was great because I was with The Who. I was working with Pete Townshend just after Keith Moon died [in 1978], and I said to him, ‘Have you got anybody to play the drums? Because I’d love to do it. I’ll leave Genesis.’ And Pete said, ‘*bleep*, we’ve just asked Kenney Jones.’ Because Kenney Jones, unbeknown to most people, played on stuff when Keith was too out of it. He was far too polite for the Who. But I would have done the job. I would have joined The Who.”
The iconic drum fill is what eveyone talks about obviously, but for me, it's the section from 8:15 to 8:30 that i cannot comprehend. That rotating pattern between toms, snare and kick with the offbeat "ah ah ah ah" vocals is just mind-blowing. He has done that on every live version of this song I've seen, and he somehow makes it look easy.
Bass player Leland Sklar (guy with beard) has toured with Phil, TOTO, among many others over the years and played on over 2500 albums. So sad Phil's health has forced him to retire.
Finally someone who knows he's a drummer, there was 3 drummer's in̈cluding Phil, his son was on stage aswell on drums, and you know he was with Genesis as the drummer but became lead singer.
Lee, I love so much watching you experiencing and learning to love the things I've loved my whole life. Love your channel for so many reasons, and if I had the money, I would spend so much on it. Great job!
When Phil and Chester were together, real magic happened. Also, lovely guitar from Mr Stuermer (who started out with Jean Luc Ponty; check out Renaissance or Gardens of Babylon.)
His guitar player, Daryl Stuermer, played some good lead guitar on 70's Jean Luc Ponty (violin) fusion albums (eg.Imaginary Voyage, Aurora). Collins also had his fusion group Brand X, with John Goodsall on guitar.
Most people don’t know he is left-handed, so his drum kit is set exactly opposite of the norm. Also, that he has retractable Drum Sticks, so that’s why you don’t see him reaching for the sticks! They were in his hands the whole time! If you look at his hands really close you’ll see the the little bands. Soon as you said you do the Rock Classics, I tapped like, & Subscribed. Hadn’t even heard but a few words, from you. So, I’ll be back!!
Just watched your reaction to In The Air. Tonight. The look on your face when he hit that iconic riff was priceless. Love your channel - subscribed my first visit & plan to become one of your older patreons (I'm 71) soon. Hope you feel better soon.
If you enjoyed this track, you should watch "Phil Collins Drum Solo @ Bercy HD" in which he solos against Chester in a magical performance. I highly recommend it.

If you love live music, here's a suggestion: Phil Collins - 1985 - Live Aid Wembley, London & JFK, Philadelphia same day! Phil Collins was the only artist to play both continents during that intercontinental concert. He played Every Breath You Take/Long Long Way to Go with Sting at Wembley Stadium, London, UK, boarded a plane, flew to Philadelphia, PA, USA to perform Against All Odds at JFK stadium. When he arrived he could not find a piano that was still in tune. He still rocked it and joined in with Led Zeppelin afterwards. Bless him for that passion and effort toward a charitable cause.
Such a well-constructed song so well presented with Collins' usual attention to detail. Even the echoes are in time. His charisma and talent are off the chart. Such drama! Perfect suspense. He gets 'into' a song like few can. I totally believe what he is saying & feel the emotion. I never tire of seeing this performance (the concert is great). The ease and confidence he has is awesome. I wonder how much of what he brings results from his drama schooling (high school). If you have never seen his acting on Miami Vice as Phil the Shill, you must. He is hilarious, dramatic, and for me totally believable. The writers of the episode did a great job and I love how the ending ties back to the beginning. Maybe you could watch it online as a live feed or something.
The Beatle's producer George Martin produced an album of the Beatle songs and he had Phil Collins sing and play GOLDEN SLUMBERS - CARRY THAT WEIGHT - THE END. Phil plays Ringo's drum part and sings. Incredible.
Of course in his band here he has Daryl on guitar and Chester on drums, very much part of the Genesis live band going back to 1977. Man you gotta do the Old Medley from Rome 2007 of In The Cage/Cinema Show/Duke's Travels/Afterglow. The drumming in Cinema Show with Chester is awesome, you have Phil singing and going back on drums throughout finishing with Chester for the epic outro. This In The Air Tonight is brilliant, but wait until you see the Old Genesis Medley from Rome in 2007
Hey Lee! Check out some vids of Genesis' last tour. Seeing Phil sitting in a chair singing will make you cry like a baby. I have an 8 by 10 picture of Phil in the chair, his son on drums directly behind him. The picture makes me cry!!!!😎😎😎😎
"That effing guy" is Leland Sklar. A bassist for hire. Played on over 2000 albums. You read that right. He was part of Phil's band with Chester Thompson and Daryl Steurmer. I don't think he ever played for Genesis because Mike played the bass. Look for Sklar's videos. The stories he tells!
Two drummers Phil obviously and the other is the amazing Chester Thompson. Check out their drum duet at Wembley Stadium from the 1985 Genesis tour… Sublime
You should react to one of the greatest drummers from the 60s. His name is Dino Danelli and he was the drummer for The Young Rascals. He’s so under appreciated. I highly recommend reacting to them playing their song I’ve Been Lonely Too Long on the Ed Sullivan show. Another song that showcases Dinos drumming is Good Lovin on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Each person in the audience had to be thinking... I have waited for this moment, all of my life, oh Lord!
😂🎉 Good one!! 💯😌
Epic performance!!!
I thought that too lol❤ lucky 🍀

AAAAAAAAA
I saw them in Newcastle. Absolutely fantastic.
Yes, he's always been at the top for me and that tour simply solidified it for me..
When you have talent like Phil Collins, you can walk around slowly on stage, in all black clothes, with minimal effects, & still be phenomenal!!! 💖
A level beyond any level ❤
Phil is a total GOAT

One of the greatest performers of our time 🙂
This is the one piece of music that Phil Collins will be known for, for all of eternity.
Leland Sklar playing bass. That guy has played with SO many different artists.
Or as I so eloquently put it " that fuckin guy!" 🤣
Came here to say this. Sklar is da bomb.

The first time I heard this song was when it was first released and I got goosebumps. Still do! Phil is one of the best. I wish him well.

Phil Collins, great drummer and with a privileged voice!
Yeah its Chester Thomson on Drums and Daryl Stuermer on lead, both were a massive part of the Genesis Live sound for over 40 years
Old British TV advert for Cadbury Chocolate advert based on this track is just brilliant! 😂😂😂
Yeah I agree with you
Spectacular.

An absolutely sensational drum battle. A must see, man.
I always love this whenever I hear it.
-We can see a classic scene with this song, in the first episode of TV show "Miami Vice", (in 1984)
Outstanding

Phil is a monster back there. People get it twisted because of the commercial route he took but brand x is pure insanity lol
FYI The guitar player with the long white beard is Leland Sklar, he's played with many rock artists and groups, he's appeared on over 2,000 albums!

...on TV - 1982- Hackett - Amazing!
This song is epic, but my favorite song of his is "I wished it would rain down on me."

As well as being such a great drummer and singer, he also plays keyboards and was an actor too.
Phil will always be one of the best I saw in concert both solo & with Genesis. It's always a great show!
Yes, that was Chester on the drums as well! ❤
As others have said, the bass player is Leland Sklar. If you haven’t yet, check out his bass playing on Billy Thorpe’s Children of The Sun.
The Beatle's producer George Martin produced an album of the Beatle songs and he had Phil Collins sing and play GOLDEN SLUMBERS - CARRY THAT WEIGHT - THE END. Phil plays Ringo's drum part and sings. Incredible.
Great reaction, love it.
You have to watch the 1985 live version, its truly epic!!!
Drums my second fav instrument. 🎉 saw him live in concert down under Was fantastic 🎉🎉🎉you have to watch the Cadbury chocolate ad with the gorilla 😊

Golden country REO Speed wagon
Yup. ❤😊
This song came out when i was 14 snd i was haunted and hooked
That dude on the bass was the one and only Leland Sklar - a legend
This is Epic and we will never see anything like this again, just wished I would have been there
That is guitar legend Steve Stephens (Billy Idol's guitarist). I'd love to see a reaction to Leave Me Alone or They Don't Care About Us.
