- Santa Monica Police Officers arrest a fruit vendor at Santa Monica Beach on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Her vending cart was also impounded,
Los Angeles County Health Deputies confiscated fruit from many street vendors. Fruit cannot be cut at the cart. The fruit must be already cut and in sealed containers. Melons are prohibited. Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers issued several citations.
Today's multi-department task force consisted of Los Angeles County Health Deputies, Santa Monica Police Officers, Santa Monica Fire Chief Wolfgang Knabe, Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers, Santa Monica Fire Code Enforcement Officers, Public Works employees, and private security guards.
The newly formed task force has been instrumental in helping to educate and enforce the City’s safety laws and ensuring safe sidewalk vending practices across the City.
According to information from the City of Santa Monica website www.santamonica.gov/topic-exp... ; Santa Monica was one of the first cities in the state to develop a permitted vending program. The City's comprehensive program that has allowed permitted or licensed vendors to operate for over 30 years includes permitting processes and parameters for safe vending, and today over 150 vendors are legally permitted to vend in the city. In 2018, the state law changed with the “Safe Sidewalk Vending Act” (SB 946) to provide important entrepreneurship and economic opportunities to low-income and immigrant communities.
State and local laws guide safe vending practices and standards in Santa Monica. All vendors need a City of Santa Monica business license and if applicable, a vending permit to sell any items in the City, and vendors selling food must also obtain and display a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health permit. The permit requirements reflect Santa Monica’s commitment to balancing public health and safety with expanding opportunities for micro-entrepreneurs.
Vendors are encouraged and welcome in many sidewalk locations throughout the City. In particular, sidewalk vendors are encouraged to vend on the sidewalk along Colorado Avenue between the Expo Light Rail Line (4th Street) and Ocean Avenue (top of the Santa Monica Pier).
They need to start cleaning up the homeless problem I think people crapping all over the sidewalks is a little more of a health problem

They're literally displayed on the carts. They violated health codes by placing cut melons under glass, which causes bacteria. So the contaminated food was thrown out

Licensed businesses in that area have to:
Pay rent
Pay taxes
Pay for insurance
Hire and pay for workers
Pay for insurances for the workers
Put money up front for capital
Abide by health inspections
Pay the penalty if they don't pass
If profit is in the red, owners still have to pay for employees.

There should be a balance of vendors and its restaurants. With the open borders there are gonna be an influx of illegals (invaders) searching for work. Just imagine a few more months...and these locations gonna just expand further affecting the profits/revenues of restaurants.

I am not for illegal street vending for sure, but at least they are making a living vs. all the criminality that is going on. We have thieves walking out of Walmart, Home Depot, etc...whom do not get prosecuted and are helping raise prices for us law abiding citizens. My point being, what a screwed up system we have.

I’m definitely for street vendors but there should be designated areas to maintain a clean area in my opinion but I don’t like “public good” services. It’s all about paying the government and having permits. If A business serves bad food then they will fail because no one will buy from them. We don’t have a free market anymore, you have to pay for everything you do. There are always repercussions for freedom but it far exceeds the the negatives…

Thank you to these public health officers. There job is so important. They are protecting the public from health and safety violations. Food poisoning is the worst. The vendors have a duty to obey the law. The vendors should have a warning, but if they jeopardize the public's health again, their food cart should be confiscated and they should face a stiff fine. It's outrageous to put anyone's health in danger. Children love to drink these juices or eat fruit as well, and food poisoning is no joke.

what a crock of bullshit! Believe me my brother is a sergeant with LAPD they are attacking the homeless problem and all other criminal problems with the same amount of vigor and enthusiasm! Homeless people show up in LA County and California because the weather is so terrific and this is a liberal state that hands out money for no reason other than handing out money !this is heaven For bums and junkies and nut cases. You can actually get a monthly income food stamps medical card and other things like free public transportation card when you arrive here. The police can't do anything about it because the law is so liberal. So they keep coming! A tsunami of human scum! They are constantly going through homeless camps checking ID for warrants etc. and then during the summer when it is between 110 at 120° for several months the homeless camps empty out because they all went to California. The constitution of the United States protects these people and they are A majority of drug addicts and mental health cases. Ronald Reagan opened up all of the mental hospital and said those people should be free to live the way they want to and here we have the results. In Anaheim where I live they've had to dismantle all of the bus stops because the homeless turn them into little condos! They bring all of their shit and pile it up and the bus stop and sleep on the bench and make it their own little home. Many of them have dogs to protect them while they sleep. So as a result the city of Anaheim had all of these sheltered bus stops Dismantled and hauled away. So if you're going to get a city bus you better have an umbrella with you for shelter because you're standing out in the hot sun thanks to the homeless.

Learn sanitary procedures so the innocent customers don't get SICK from botulism, E. coli, and a host of other diseases that come with fresh fruit. Even the pulverizers that extra juice from the fruit will pick up deadly viruses if not sterilized on a daily basis. That's what this is all about the public safety! Nothing else this is not Mexico we actually care about the public health.

I've work at so many top restaurant's in NYC and New Jersey and believe there some people that really don't care. From picking up food from the kitchen floor to no proper temperature measurments and the health department only visits once a year and many times they'll go the same month every year so many restaurant owners know when they'll come plus the busboy, food runner or even the waitress will go running in to the kitchen yelling to get ready for inspection.

In the south, and eventually the north, skilled construction trades and the trucking professions have basically decimated U.S. Citizens ability to earn a living and run small companies. Why? Because cheap labor has made it impossible to be profitable and earn a living, while also going by the rules and having all the licenses and training needed.
