It’s crazy to me that I see people whining about being able to customize the phone. If you don’t like the customization then don’t do it. You still have that option. It’s ALWAYS better to have the option and not use it than want an option and not have it. I’m always going to choose having the choice over not.
I had that thought too, but ultimately it always boils down to the person/people. Honest, upright people will still be who they are. This update only makes it easier for people who are already sneaky and dishonest to continue down that path.

I got you what you are saying about the control centre. Honestly once you sort and organise it, it’s a charm. One cool thing is that you can bring the shortcuts with actions on the control centre! That’s a game changer for me. Try it out..
Threw caution into the wind and downloaded the iOS 18 dev beta 1 JUST to try out the customization features and I REALLY appreciate all of them. I can easily organize Control Center to show individual Shortcuts. With a light gray highlight color, I can remove (nearly) all the color from the iPhone and iPad homescreen to finally have a visually coherent UI, in place of the typical color chaos. I found that a neutral highlight color in the icon customization settings just makes my designer heart deeply, deeply happy.
If you have the design and/or creative prowess, you can absolutely make this feature worthwhile. I'm excited about the possibilities. Also, the feature will undoubtedly get better and more refined before the public release of the app.
Apple should have implemented an easy ‘long press’ over icon option to reveal a library of icons, similar to emoji menus, so that the user can just quickly select an alternative icon, then tap on home screen to confirm the change. This should have applied to any and all icons - both system and 3rd party. It would’ve be simple, clean and easy process while staying true to Apple’s iOS language and overall aesthetic.
I once scheduled a message using shortcut automations. I just made an automation that sends a specific text to a specific contact at a specific time. You'll have to remember to remove it once the message was sent, though.
I don't know what David is talking about in 8:45 My wifi button is just where it was - the network bubble he talked about is for cellular, bluetooth and hotspot none of which people keep turning on or off all the time. It does have wifi too, but no ones gonna need to open bubble to access Wifi. Even then, that bubble is housing so many options that was available only going to settings primarily. I do not see any 5 steps here. Also, if you dont want to mess around with the bubble, scroll to the next page and you have al that was in the bubble in a list. It'll probably take slight practice but for the benefit.
So personally... like 90% of all icon packs I've seen on Android look terrible. Most examples I've seen of tinted icons on Android look terrible. Most harder-core attempts at iPhone customization... I think the icons look terrible. The tinted icons in the keynote demo, to me, also looked terrible. Looking through posts on Reddit, I started to see a few examples where it actually looked decent, but they were in the minority. There's an extremely low chance I'll actually use this particular feature, because... best case, it looks decent. Not amazing or better, just decent. Even so, this is clearly what the people want. People, who generally have zero design sense (not a diss, just gotta be real) want to make their phone more personal, and this will achieve that. While probably also looking terrible. My other beef: Having all icons the exact same colour seriously makes it way harder to quickly differentiate between them. When I'm looking for WhatsApp, I'm not looking for the icon that looks like a chat bubble, I'm looking for that shade of green. All that aside: The dark-mode icons are awesome and I will probably use those.
One thing that really pushed me away from the pixel was the theme engine not effecting all of the icons. There was always one that refused to change.....
People keep forgetting that iMessage is a messaging over IP service. Think WhatsApp and Telegram. At this point, cellular messaging is only incidental. SMS, MMS, and RCS are low in their priority because they’re still low capacity and lacks many of IP messaging features. The difference is just that iMessage is built together with cellular messaging. That allows it to be built into the system itself. It’s not technically their fault RCS can’t support many of IP messaging features and that Android doesn’t have a similar service that’s built into the system together with cellular messaging.
I downloaded the beta to try the Home Screen customization and after 5 minutes of playing around I left the apps in their default state. The tinting looked terrible! The comment of having a primary and secondary colours was on the money. I like the changes to control centre especially 2 x 1 widgets. I would appreciate 2 x 1 apps/widgets on the homescreen too.
Have you tried positioning of widgets? Still matrix 4x6 and I wasn't able to put 2x2 widget in columns 2 and 3. Same with widget 2x4 - I wasn't able to put one in rows 2-3 or 4-5. Only 1-2, 3-4 or 5-6. It's a step in right direction but still very limited.
My girlfriend has an Android phone, and I have an iPhone with iOS 18 beta. She can already see my emoji tapbacks (including the non-standard ones), and she's also able to already send any emoji as a tapback from her Android phone (and has been able to for a while). I don't know what messaging app she uses, but everything seems to work fine except when she sends stickers as emojis (again, from her Android phone, a feature she already has) they show up as standalone stickers, not attached to a message on my end. She said that's normal, too. (None of that includes the GenMoji thing, but I doubt I'll use that anyway with access to literally all of the emojis unlocked)
They rather complain about things they don’t fully understand yet. Like the redundancy in the control center being fixable in 4 seconds. Or the 5 taps for WiFi being more like 1 long swipe and 2 taps
You guys hit all the gripes I’ve had with this beta.. and lack of customization.. this is the first iPhone I’ve own since the 3G.. Hopefully they fix a lot of this stuff but android has been light years ahead with features
One scenario that I imagine is if I have to use someone else’s phone in an emergency situation, I know for example what the phone app looks like, and I can quickly access it. I know it’s a really rare use case but that could be the difference in those moments.
2:08 I use an iPhone and I believe I do have a unique Home Screen even without the new update. I mixed in some widgets and shuffled the positioning around and I like it, it’s kinda cool. I also have some UI apps like charging play to spice things up. I use an android too and I always like customizing my stuff to be optimized to me 2:08

I haven’t felt this “forced obsolescence” thing since iOS 9 on the iPhone 4S. What are ya’ll doing to your phones? The iPhone 7 on the last version is still pretty snappy. Currently on the 12 pro iOS 18 beta 1 and it still feels snappy. In terms of stability yeah iOS is very hit or miss, no version so far apart from 12 could top iOS 6.
A lot of the reason why I switched back to iOS was because of the blue bubble and music but now that that’s going away …. I’m really thinking of returning back to my android cupcake days.
This discussion is a bit dumb as the icon colour changes aren’t available for all Android skins/OS (its all the same), only some. The funny thing is, once Apple actually release this feature, more iOS users will have this ability than Android users - now thats funny.
The reason theming on iOS looks so terrible is because developers need to support it, same thing happened with dark mode when it was introduced, only Apple apps supported it, it will look good when get all those updates on release day.

The customization features were the ones I was most excited about. Mainly the dark icons. Now some of the tinting can make some Home Screens ugly as hell. I've seen some but like he said I don’t have to look at their phone. As long as I like my Home Screen.
Why they don’t using true tone coloring inside the iphone? Imagine a wallpaper like a sun and sky with green grass and icons on the green would feed in green tone and icons on sky gotten blue and yellow tones

C'mon. You know how this works. Apple likes to do new features every year. In 2025 it will be complimentary colors. In 2026 it will be icon packs. In one of those years you'll just ask Siri to generate a particular look, and it will do so artistically and you won't be embarrassed to show off your home screen as if you were using an Android.
I feel like eventually we're going in a widget focused, iconless, direction. I only use widgets on my homescreens, and for the ones I don't have useful widgets for, I have a quick access way to get them. Everything else I get in the organized app drawer on the occasion I might need them. The problem with this theory is how slow the development of the widget ecosystem is happening. We'll see though...
it is better. you know why? on iphone ALL the icons change to the colour you want. pixel devices it does not do that, not all apps will change colour. i know because i know people with pixel devices and that is what happens.
@@AndrewPL5 I use “Icon pack studio” with “nova launcher” on my pixel and search for a material you theme I like that gets applied to all my icons. I just have to remember to redo it when I install more apps so they get themed as well.
At least they did this. Couple of years back the biggest change that was assumed is to change the icons shapes in iPhone 😂. Android had built a big feature list which iPhone can pick up and implement for next few years. Android getting saturated? They need to now generate more features so that apple can use it 10 years down the line.
apple needs to give a theme store where they can buy different icon packs, wallpapers and themes. make some free and some paid. Depending on the preference.
Problem is, since Google doesn't make it mandatory, some app developers still has not supported the Material You theme. Some app developers are just making excuses like, "We like to be different." I'm like, different as in annoying?
I live in Thailand, and was telling people how the green text should just go away, and they all disagreed. Here, most phone services charge you for sending SMS messages, and they need to know when it will be free to reply, or they will get charged. That said, 99% of people here use line anyway, so it doesn't matter much.
I love Android, and i use both iOS and Android daily. I just think it is unfair when people expect apple to basically slow down the innovation in the form of features to their applications, like iMessage which is one of their biggest products, just to cater to people who choose to use Android. They already are implementing RCS which will make the experience a lot better for both users, now they want them to just not add anything else because it may hurt the other OS user feelings.

I don’t know about anyone else, but my AirPods Pro 2. They don’t sound as loud as they did an iOS 17. I even forgot the device and repaired them still sounds the same, but I haven’t tried the beta yet for AirPods Pro. Anyone else having the same issue? The music just doesn’t sound as loud. I have to turn the volume up more to hear it better the music it’s much less louder than iOS 17 🤷♂
It'll be great if Apple allows Launcher apps so that you can really customize your home and lock screen. Just changing the colors of your icons is not exciting at all. I think it's so boring. I think I'll keep using Shortcuts to completely change my icons. Nothing is exciting to me about the new iOS 18. Maybe the calculator features and a different look on the Calendar but still the same UI. I thought we were going to see a whole new revamped UI. You can't even change the color of the messaging bubbles or the keyboard and the same ugly icons.

You know what would really make App' customization cool? If, instead of dark mode, and solid colours for the App' icons. An option for semi-transparent-frosted look for that 'sense of hierarchy' effect🤷🏼♂️
This episode was just great. My first "smartphones" were apple and then I got the customization bug and moved to android. Then it was a move to pixel. Having the iphone give me the ability to customize is huge and they keep moving forward in this area. Add apple's greater commitment to security and I think there's a near-compelling reason to switch back. I'm in IT, I'm an old bird, I could really care less about texting embroidery per se, I run a 70% apple/20% windows/10% linux shop. I guess my point is apple is moving in the right direction with customization on top of more important (to me) security and privacy issues. Great episode.

So in short... some people suck at customization. They've been ruining Androids the same way for years. Some people just have zero artistic talent. Even with the shortcuts... some people were making some horrendous looking iphone screens. But at the same time, some people with a bit of skill made some that looked amazing. But the bottom line is that you don't have to look at other people's phone anyway. So who cares if someone makes an ugly screen? It's not Apple's (or Android's or Samsung's) fault. So that said, I think it is a welcome addition.

You can color the app icons and I guess that's fine given almost no controls to tweak. But it also tints the widgets just the same.

Hopefully in the next updates for iOS 18, there will be even more icon styles. That would greatly improve on customization. Transparent Widgets, too.

the problem with the tint is that you can't make out what the icons(apps) are in folders. they need to allow limited colors within those tints.

I don’t like the connectivity cluster in the control center either. I feel like each one should be independent

iPhone needs a shortcut to go directly to the app library; especially if you want to access the hidden folder.
Why they don’t using true tone coloring inside the iphone? Imagine a wallpaper like a sun and sky with green grass and icons on the green would feed in green tone and icons on sky gotten blue and yellow tones

So a few people have horrible taste in colour... but it's somehow Apple's fault and Apple's the one being made fun of? I've seen millions of disgusting Android homescreens and nobody has given Google any hate for that.
Google optimised the material u to its limit but apple just wrote a code to color all the icons, tthe comfortablity matters
Instead of having to change each element in the customisation process on iPhone, why doesn't apple just make a themes feature similar to Samsung.
C'mon. You know how this works. Apple likes to do new features every year. In 2025 it will be complimentary colors. In 2026 it will be icon packs. In one of those years you'll just ask Siri to generate a particular look, and it will do so artistically and you won't be embarrassed to show off your home screen as if you were using an Android.
I feel like eventually we're going in a widget focused, iconless, direction. I only use widgets on my homescreens, and for the ones I don't have useful widgets for, I have a quick access way to get them. Everything else I get in the organized app drawer on the occasion I might need them.
The problem with this theory is how slow the development of the widget ecosystem is happening. We'll see though...
iphone icons color changing is not as good as pixel ui. apple is not only slow but also bad at copying stuff.
it is better. you know why? on iphone ALL the icons change to the colour you want. pixel devices it does not do that, not all apps will change colour. i know because i know people with pixel devices and that is what happens.
The pixel is barely good at being a phone.

@@AndrewPL5 I use “Icon pack studio” with “nova launcher” on my pixel and search for a material you theme I like that gets applied to all my icons. I just have to remember to redo it when I install more apps so they get themed as well.
If Apple released an iOS 6 theme pack and even if it was paid, I’d buy it. I love iOS 6 so much.
At least they did this. Couple of years back the biggest change that was assumed is to change the icons shapes in iPhone 😂. Android had built a big feature list which iPhone can pick up and implement for next few years. Android getting saturated? They need to now generate more features so that apple can use it 10 years down the line.
If Google could allow the apps beyond the home screen change boom that would be great

apple needs to give a theme store where they can buy different icon packs, wallpapers and themes. make some free and some paid. Depending on the preference.
Problem is, since Google doesn't make it mandatory, some app developers still has not supported the Material You theme. Some app developers are just making excuses like, "We like to be different." I'm like, different as in annoying?
I live in Thailand, and was telling people how the green text should just go away, and they all disagreed. Here, most phone services charge you for sending SMS messages, and they need to know when it will be free to reply, or they will get charged. That said, 99% of people here use line anyway, so it doesn't matter much.
I love Android, and i use both iOS and Android daily. I just think it is unfair when people expect apple to basically slow down the innovation in the form of features to their applications, like iMessage which is one of their biggest products, just to cater to people who choose to use Android. They already are implementing RCS which will make the experience a lot better for both users, now they want them to just not add anything else because it may hurt the other OS user feelings.
I don't feel so old now because I use the word pagination all the time. 😂

I don’t know about anyone else, but my AirPods Pro 2. They don’t sound as loud as they did an iOS 17. I even forgot the device and repaired them still sounds the same, but I haven’t tried the beta yet for AirPods Pro. Anyone else having the same issue? The music just doesn’t sound as loud. I have to turn the volume up more to hear it better the music it’s much less louder than iOS 17 🤷♂
All I want out of Apple is a volume slider on the lock screen.

It'll be great if Apple allows Launcher apps so that you can really customize your home and lock screen. Just changing the colors of your icons is not exciting at all. I think it's so boring. I think I'll keep using Shortcuts to completely change my icons. Nothing is exciting to me about the new iOS 18. Maybe the calculator features and a different look on the Calendar but still the same UI. I thought we were going to see a whole new revamped UI. You can't even change the color of the messaging bubbles or the keyboard and the same ugly icons.

You know what would really make App' customization cool? If, instead of dark mode, and solid colours for the App' icons. An option for semi-transparent-frosted look for that 'sense of hierarchy' effect🤷🏼♂️
This episode was just great. My first "smartphones" were apple and then I got the customization bug and moved to android. Then it was a move to pixel. Having the iphone give me the ability to customize is huge and they keep moving forward in this area. Add apple's greater commitment to security and I think there's a near-compelling reason to switch back. I'm in IT, I'm an old bird, I could really care less about texting embroidery per se, I run a 70% apple/20% windows/10% linux shop. I guess my point is apple is moving in the right direction with customization on top of more important (to me) security and privacy issues. Great episode.

So in short... some people suck at customization. They've been ruining Androids the same way for years. Some people just have zero artistic talent. Even with the shortcuts... some people were making some horrendous looking iphone screens. But at the same time, some people with a bit of skill made some that looked amazing.
But the bottom line is that you don't have to look at other people's phone anyway. So who cares if someone makes an ugly screen? It's not Apple's (or Android's or Samsung's) fault. So that said, I think it is a welcome addition.
