I love MGMT, I've always loved MGMT. I want to share a little story. I like to collect CDs and the shop I would go to (which is sadly now out of business) is where I would buy them. Anyway, one night I made a late night run at around 10 and the store closes at 11. I was just going to pick up a quick CD and head home but I didn't really know what I wanted. Of all songs, The Handshake was playing on the overhead speakers and I was literally tapping my toe and almost dancing right there in the CD aisle. I asked the person working there what was playing and they told me which album it was from but not the song title. I bought the album instantly and headed for home. On my way home I thought I'd pop it in. I did, and it was a very pleasurable ride home. I get home and I kid you not, I probably listened to Oracular Spectacular about 4 or so times in full. It is to this day one of my all time favorite albums. I bought Congratulations the day it came out and got the coin as well. Definitely wasn't dissatisfied there either. Terrific album. I bought the self titled album and it appeared that not too many people were crazy about it but it has probably one of my favorite MGMT tracks on it, Alien Days. The second half of the album is a psychedelic treat as well. Little Dark Age which is your newest single which in my opinion couldn't have been released at a more opportune time, IS my all time favorite MGMT track. It's retro, it's new, it's psychedelic, it's goth, and it's exactly what I needed especially around Halloween. That's all I really wanted to say, I love this band and I hope you continue to make quality music for years to come.

After releasing their third album called 'MGMT' they reached the peak of their psychedelic-style career. There wasn't too much to do after this particular record, especially that they named it after the band's name - that sounds like this particular album had to be their masterpiece, the opus magnum of MGMT. Nobody was surprised that the expectations about 4'th ablum was really high. They had to find some kind of new style, some other, alternative way for the band. ''Little Dark Age" (song and album) - showing that they finally got it after few years of searching. It was definitely hard time for MGMT where was only a little amount of concerts, almost nothing in media, small amount of interviews. They had to focus on surviving and try to rebound. I belive that all that things are described in this song and the video. Band had to find their new incarnation which wasnt too easy. It was reminding living in the years of 1000-1300's - the mid-centuries - times when life was hard and death was all around the people. This is corresponding with lyrics - "The image of the dead / Dead ends in my mind". You can also see the black dressed man with face covered, who smoking e-fag - he is 'the death' in this video. He attend with the band everywhere - in garden with Andrew, in the room with Ben. They were feeling almost like the death get the body and become phisical person. It was all over the place when MGMT was down. Ofcourse I am talking about mentally-death - not the real dead. Anyway there is a lot of symbols - magician's trick reminds miracle of re-birth the MGMT in 2018 with new album. Chopping the fruits is analogy to burning the bridges after Oracular Spectacular - the debut album from 2007 by which people are still judging band currently in 2017.
Good analysis and as I have no knowledge of it's story I saw it as dealing with some kind of illness like addiction or depression possibly a physical disorder idk but dealing with the process of suffering from said problems while dealing with the hurdles of everyday life the relationship with others who may be judging from their biased opinions or a family who shame them for drug use or cutting or manic moods. Your metaphorically on stage and scared they will always see your nakedness so wish to burn away history.
I've been a listener for years and I'm really proud of where mgmt has gotten. The potential they had at the beginning grew into something beautiful and I'm honored to call myself a fan. Keep it up. I'm expecting a lot from this album honestly

The girl in the video is really channeling her Gillian from New Order’s Perfect Kiss video. The track sounds like if the Clan of Xymox, had some love child with Duran Duran’s The Chauffeur, and Savage’s Don’t Cry Tonight. Fucking love it.
To whoever sees this, let me know if you feel the same way as me about this song and the video. As far as the song, it feels like they added either drugs or magic into it and that's all I have to say because its just that f-ing good for no reason with the fluid-sounding synth. It's nothing like I've ever heard. And I feel nearly the same about the video because I feel like they've adapted the video to take place during the *dark ages*, and you have these characters like the seemed brother and sister who are just standing there watching the magician, combing their hair or trying to entertain themselves all with blank expressions. It's so fascinating to me because I've never seen anything like it in a weird way, combined with the dynamic of how they pulled the music video off. It's like the song and video both formed their own mini-aesthetic that resonates with an esoteric audience, including myself. The whole dynamic of the magician too sticks with me for some reason too, maybe because like nearly everything else in the music video (especially the brother and sister) there's random shots of them doing unexplained things for unexplained reasons, but I feel like if the music video or this behind the scenes video explained every detail of what's exactly happening in these shots it would take away the fun in it, along with the speculation of something so fascinating and mysterious. that is all "The image of the dead - dead ends in my mind" followed by the most beautiful synth rush to ever touch the face of planet earth as well, like wow.
Oracular Spectacular is by far my favorite of their albums....and I'm a super fan. It's just the perfect combination of creative trippy weirdness.....with pop catchiness. But.....this song is excellent. Gothy new wave darkness....and with a killer video to match. Ranks up with the best of their older stuff.
