Love love love this album, more mature and melancholy MGMT but still classically sugary-psych stuff with light synths and beautifully corny and sometimes-morbid, weird lyrics. Got some insanely catchy tunes on this which are incredible and amazing arrangements and production that makes it all the more interesting, as well as fun, to listen to!
I can't believe he gave it a TLOP Redux/10!
Besides ~3 songs, TLOP is garbage.
Cooliotopnotch ok
I hadn't heard of MGMT before this record was released, and I have to say, this album is truly unique. Even coming off the first track, I knew I was in for something I had never heard before. I've always been a rock/alternative/folk type guy and whatnot, but this album changed the way I view music. A wonderful album that is truly imaginative and succeeds in taking you out of reality. solid 9/10.

I think she works out too much is a metaphor about how he never worked out his own problems in the relationship, not just physically. I think the song is very original and gives a "rio by Duran Duran but horror," sense to it. its ultimately my favorite mgmt song right now
I’ve like never thought about it like that rn she works out to much is like my favorite thing. I just thought It was a silly song
Goddamnit Melon took you long enough! Now I can finally tell people my opinion on the album

Found the winning comment
Already been said
MGMT really have left their stamp on neo-psychedelia and this album confirms that. If I even found MGMT as a departure from their usually concise composition, felt like the coy and understated retreading of their inspirations and whimsy on this album is the best they've done. I'd say with some degree of certainty that MGMT will go down as one of my all-time favorite music acts.
How is TSLAMP not in the fav tracks!! Melon!

Because it's one of the campier, weaker tracks on the album.

I feel like, with time, this is going to become a classic record.
Great video Anthony! I really liked it, but I feel that when you went onto that 3 minute tangent about how this album is an example of the white race being superior kinda creeped me out. Keep up the good work!

Mr. Fantano, I'm surprised you decided to dock 2 full points just because of the word "Dark" being in the title, despite you finding the album to be "essentially perfect"....
Good review, but I thought it was a bit rude to call them “Washed up hippies” for the entire video

"T S Lamp."
Jonah Drake I mean, I call it that.
Fantano, the term “works out too much” is a reference to the all-too-common phrase of “yeah, it just didn’t work out” when in relation to relationships.
It even says so in the song but words can have more than one meaning.
Pretty sure he understood that seeing as Anthony literally said "this song seems to be straightforward about a break up." Aka "didn't work out." Not sure where else he would be able to draw that conclusion seeing as the song only references the break up through "the only reason we never worked out..." so yeah.
Will you do a review of Pizza Hut pizza crust please

as a huge mgmt fan i wasn't sure about some of the songs at first because they felt aggressively 80s, but i found myself with most of them stuck in my head at various points lately. The songs i was wary of are so much bigger than i initially thought, especially reffering to me and michael and TSLAMP. James definitely my favorite non-single song on the album! It's beautiful, heartwarming, dancy and mesmirizing IMO. 9
Bro is the one on the cover💀
my longest yeah boy ever
Me And Michael slowly overtaking LDA for my favorite track, but everything is pretty much gold, I even love James. Great review melon, fine score.
9/10 this album and the context behind it are very interesting throughout. For the most part it is a short punchy ride from beginning to end. I like the warping of pop sounds of the past, and I think there are so many solid moments on here with really good instrumentation, and lyrically though it is sometimes cheesy, like in Tslamp, it is still fun to listen to as there is so much going into it. The album is like this pretty consistent with that. The vocal performance on each track matches the tone very well, and the title track is the best track on the album, with an infectious chorus to boot. The biggest drawback for me is I feel like it doesn't finish As strong as it starts. Specifically the last two songs. They aren't super bland or bad, but it's clear that they don't have as much to offer as the warbly 80s inspired jam opener, or a song like days that got away. I just wanna share my opinion. I haven't watched the review so let's see if me and melon thought the same of this album
Nice to see someone actually talking about the record in this comments section.
Victor Fernandes thanks man, I try to do this on albums I have something to say about. Any thoughts?
I can’t get over how hard She Works Out Too Much goes
I just got She Works Out Too Much out of my head. Thanks a lot.
Nathaniel Emm it's so catchy
Honestly I could see this becoming /mu/core in the future, it's been a long time since an album was so universally memed here.
Days That Got Away deserves more LOVE
I dig it a lot too, it's a low key jam
True
Thank you for saying this. I was thinking the same thing.
This is my favorite album of the year so far.
I've been meaning to get into Pom Pom. I jam out to Dedicated to Bobby Jameson on the regular.
Is that Underoath's They're Only Chasing Safety on the bottom left and Brand New's Daisy on the top right?
Track "TSLAMP" did remind me of Pet Shop Boys, although not from their Behaviour period. I would say, it bears many similarities to the song "Domino Dancing" off their Introspective LP (and which was their last big hit, by the way).
"She works out too much" is my favorite song on the album. So fun and strange at the same time. Overall quite an enjoyable album

One Thing Left To Try: it’s like the brother of the track She Works Out Too Much. It’s dreamy, it’s catchy, it’s arguably the best track behind When You Die. Solid stuff and it’s one of those tracks you can’t help, but always hear all the way through once it starts. Love it. 10/10.

@@emmaoswald8043 I think I’ve since changed my opinion little dark age has gotta be my favorite now
So far loving this album, When You Die is by far my favorite song off of it
It's fucking wonderful. If Me and Michael had more catchy verses, though, it would've taken top spot because of that fucking amazing chorus. Of course, nothing can match the build up and payoff of the first "GO FUCK YOURSELF" it's fucking great.
Red Smurf I thought it was about two gay guys in love but it's actually about two guys who are basically in love but just not gay. The music video was a hilarious rip on the music industry stealing songs too.
Am i the only one who heard pink floyd vibes in 'when you're small" ?
no i think everyon thinks about that
melon bald age
I love this album and ironically Days That Got Away is my favourite cut. Gave me similar vibes to the end of Metanoia and Siberian Breaks; I love songs that aren't afraid to rely entirely on instrumentation to evoke a certain mood or emotion.
My opinion has been validated
I love the way that they ironically make hits.
When you're small sounded like pink Floyd
glad i wasnt the only one
I second that
You mean Tame Impala.
Shammo Hamid stop
I never really see anyone talk about the song James, but that's one of my favorite songs by this band in general.
It's such a sweet and underrated track.
I guess back then I might've given it a strong 8 too, but given how it's aged it feels like an absolute 10. It stands out, it resonates and I feel like it's still to influence the industry.
Very true. 5 years later people are even more addicted to their phones, and everybody has become obsessed with how they look from watching fitness influencers all the time. She works out too much and tslamp have just aged to describe our society even more accurately
the only reason melon didn’t give this a ten is because he didn’t work out enough
I liked this album, but I also liked that they were initially heading away from pop. I wanted them to get weirder not make an offshoot of an Ariel pink album. I think their self titled was overly criticized and underrated. Im really glad I don't base my opinion of music on music reviews because I would've missed out on an album I thoroughly enjoyed. This album is good though just wish it was more out there at times. It almost seems like they went back to a catchier sound to appease all the people who were upset they didnt make another Oracular Spectacular, which imo, had a more authentic pop sound in ways this new one doesn't with all it's ironic and self calculated throwback aesthetics much in the vein of Mr. Pink.
I personally find their self-titled to be on par with "Congratulations". Heck, it's even more unique than "Congratulations". I personally hate "Little Dark Age", but I'm not surprised by the reactions. Most of MGMT's fans are just not versed in psychedelic music. They like music that's 'trippy', but they don't actually know what psychedelic music was like back in the 60's and early 70's. It was experimental and often layered as hell. It wasn't generic and derivative. A major part of what made psychedelic music, well, psychedelic back in the day was the way artists would push the limits of compositional structure. MGMT were only following the groundwork that Syd Barrett, Can, The Red Crayola, and other similar artists did before them. Also, I agree with you on "Oracular Spectacular".
I really think their self titled is much better than little dark age with a few exceptions. There are some songs on this new album that are really great that feel almost like they could easily fit on the ST like When You Die, Days that Got Away, When Your Small, and even parts of TSLAMP. So it's hard for me to completely hate on this new albums because there's a bit in here for me to enjoy. And I think their aim here was to make a more danceable record which I would totally dance to if a dj started to play this in a club or party or something. I really prefer the more chill psychedelic introspective sounds of the ST though.
I really dislike Fantano's comments about their ST. "Unkempt" "Underwritten" "underproduced" "Lofi to a fault" "how would they possibly recover"
Wtf is this bish even talking about? It almost seems like he didn't listen to the album. He makes it seem like it was some shitty harsh and abrasive demo tape. Just the dumbest take I ever heard about the ST.
@Mister Majestic congrats you added nothing to this civil conversation, but your condescension
I always got like an oddly apocalyptic feeling from this record. Especially on the title track and "When You Die". I didn't really even get into MGMT until I heard "She Works Out Too Much" and the title track.
