For over a decade, the American band MGMT has been making music for the best of us: the freaks and geeks. FRANCE 24's Mariam Saab met the band's Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser in Paris to chat about the release of their fourth album, "Little Dark Age".

Andrew is 36 but hasn't aged physically or mentally in the past 10 years lol I love him
nah he has definitely aged mentally, you should see how hyper he was in some of their college-era videos
Omg i agree. Me too, Andrew is so cute and perfect, for me.
That’s because he doesn’t actually work and hasn’t done anything difficult in his life.
He’s still a manchild.
@@chevycruze2061 eww dude how you know in the first place and why so you’re hateful
@@aaylasecura2003 ignore him he's literally a troll lmao
I lost it when Andrew said "tbh".
Victimized Idiot He looked directly at the camera when he said it. Knew exactly what he was doing.
on what minute?
Same
The new album is all about making fun of the phone obsessed generation
What does "tbh" means ? pls i'm stupid idiot
I just want a 3 hour joke session with MGMT
Like not catching fresbee for 3 h or smth
Right bumper
I want to do a lot of things within that 3hrs..
it's hard to believe andrew is 35.. he seems like a 19-25 year old
I've met him and he really does look like he's in his 20's in person. Also he has the vibe of a sage/ascended master. :)
That’s because psychologically he IS. Arrested development.
kinda sad
@@diomiherrington wow why do you think so?
Ty
I love how Andrew is so mellow when he says jokes lol
Goldn Haze Im glad you feel that way
tseawell90 Ok
The reporter was trying to look casual about Andrew sentences xD
It is so comforting and relatable to see just how boring they are, conversationally. Makes me feel like I could have a small chat with them without as much pressure.
they are exactly as boring as their music
jbn675478 listen to congratulations then say that
If I need to fall asleep i'll be sure to look it up
jbn675478 Meaning not at all :)
A dance dance revolution
andrew's a meme man, nice
Oh, you thought otherwise?
I was very pleased to hear that as well.
Frisbees caught: 0
Worms found: 1
lmao 😂
love these guys and their authenticity and transparency.
Great to see MGMT still as adorable and awkward as ever. Also this interviewer is very charming & nice video format with the vignettes. Merçi à France 24!
The way he said tbh and looked at the camera at 7:46 had the exact same energy as jim from the office looking into the camera
Andrew and Ben make such a funny contrast.
Meeting Matt Damon on Mars xD
going to bars and eating cars
and Blondie may... come?
i want their 80s hardcore punk album next.
Nah 70s reggae
YES
YUSSS
It’s hard to be that un-creative while simultaneously forgetting how to play an instrument.
@@profile2047 wow.
I feel the decade struggle from them.
MGMT is in a constant loop of where they either make music they enjoy and the vast majority dislike
or they make music the vast majority like but they dislike. That really sucks.
bugeyedsamurai exactly
Ive loved pretty much all the stuff they put out , so I would be fine.
natanaru but we're not in the vast majority, that's the point, that's why MGMT will remain alternative forever, which is fine
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't make music they dont like themselves
Little Dark Age is their most accessible in ten years and they seem happy with it. Their music will never be blasting out of frat halls and beach resort bars again, so they’ve successfully freed themselves from the pressures of catering to those fans. After Congratulations and MGMT none of them are still hanging around. Now the band can make the dance pop music they want to make.
This is the most bizzare interview I've ever seen, I have no idea what's going on
You put Kids in the title. You opened with Kids playing. The only early song you actually mentioned was Kids. Then you jump right from that to LDA. Why does no one appreciate the creativity that came from their freedom between these two times?
i don't understand either
Surely lda is free as well?
This comment makes me feel less lonely.
Cuz it sucks
Wow they honestly said so many insightful things! Love this interview, so excited to listen to the album with my friends!!
They were lowkey fightin for a sec
“I agree”
Civil disagreement, i agree with both sides
LMAO that was hilarious
They think that pop is a joke, that the record owns them. that's why they're called the management.
What I find completely intriguing is the fact that in interviews their answers are mostly all over the place (not in a bad way). They talk about the little experiments they do here and there like 2 high school kids explaining how they designed a science project. But their final product is always an amazing album, vibrant, full of color and concepts, very mature and professional.
In contrast we often hear some big pop stars talking about their albums as if they were The Dark Side of The Moon, and yet delivering (again) a dumb bubble-gum plastic empty record.
I need Ben’s shirt.
Does anyone know what brand it is?
@@herlokki its been two years have you figured out i want it
she knew she was being trolled. she knew it.
Yeah, I think she was in on the joke. I wouldn't even call it being trolled. It sounds like the early jokes created a casual mood that allowed them to speak very freely. That's valuable.
Maxime Teppe banter
exactly.
how was she trolled
Agree with Maxime, it's called being a professional and being able to set the right mood.
I can wholeheartedly say MGMT is 100% about the making and production of their sound. They are NOT about the fame, fortune, or recognition that comes with it and they’re very vocal about that and always have been. They actively mock society as a whole and poke at the incongruencies they see day to day through their inherent “fame.” They joked their way to the top and never expected to get where they were and have talked about that before, too. Do they appreciate their music and are they proud of it? Heck yeah! But they’re not going to fake something or give an interview that’s going to please the audience at the expense of what they think is right...whether we as fans agree or not. Now, that leaves us dissatisfied to a certain degree but you’re either on their train or not. They don’t bend for anybody and don’t make apologies for it. That’s MGMT in a nutshell.
I would lump Arctic monkeys & Arcade Fire into that mix. Old school lovers of the art of music and it's production.
Hey Andrew likes memes. You heard it here folks
"teebeeheich"
did you have to put "Kids" in the title?
the answer is no
cool cape, my point exactly
cool cape I mean it’s their biggest song and they were trying to give a past-present kinda thing. So it makes a lot of sense.
Clickbait of course
yes
Aside from a large chunk of their self-titled album, everything MGMT has made has been pure gold (in my opinion). Easily one of my favorite bands of all time
A Bottomless Pit I seem to be in the minority but I genuinely love that whole album.
Haut Strange much love, to me its their most cohesive. It invites the listener to get more investigative and ibe developed a relarionship with each song unlike any other album
we eating our breffiss dis mourning unfortunately
Facts and same
That album seems a result after a breakup, very depressing. its for sitting alone with nothing to think about and feeling empty
One of the best interviews with MGMT. So happy to have them back.
Thank you, we're glad you enjoyed it. The show was editedby the presenter, Mariam Saab.
One of my all-time favorite bands.
Andrew may not have aged but his wardrobe has for sure
I wonder if they've been watching Black Mirror
Kotryna hahaha i was just about to comment that
Ben watched, he said that in some intervieww
Kotryna Muse have
Look at these kids in the footages where they are goofing around and playing frisbee. I'm laughing hard to “it's a worm” 😂 Really age is just a number. We will always be kids at heart
Why did this interview use Kids/time to pretend as an opener when there were three singles with videos that they could’ve used?
UnicornLavenderMax most of the world still only knows MGMT for those 2 songs as well as electric feel, not their new stuff. theres people who know congratulations too, but self titled and little dark age are both pretty foreign. so she used the 2 most popular tracks to remind people who they are
Jouquin Fox that's lame but I understand
Because like it or not those are their most popular songs that alot of people think of when they think MGMT. Fans like you or me, who im sure know all the tracks from Congratulations and MGMT albums, they didnt make the TV program for us. Its probably more to showcase new music to a broad viewing public, so they choose their most catchy songs to draw people in who might not know the band.
1st interview I actually watched of MGMT. I usually just interview them via music
I love them but they so difficult to interview
Seems like it. She did pretty well considering that
lekerke Well it’s because they’re so resistant to it. You have to remember, MGMT isn’t about the fame and recognition. They honestly mock it and I think that comes through in how they interview..Andrew, especially. Ben is a little more open and grounded in his responses but they’re 100% about the music. Anything else is just extra and not a priority to them.
They're the real deal, they're artists. They're not seasoned public speakers, that's not what they do.
I think it's more because they dont say what she maybe wants or needs them to say... for it to 'sell' and idea of great idol-ness
MGMT FOREVER ;
Andrew looks better with long hair tbh
Wasn’t that Electric Feel in the beginning even tho the title said Kids?
Hard to believe Andrew is only three years younger than me. He still looks 26, 27.
it’s hard to believe that you are 40
i love andrew 🥺
Why do they have to include kids in the title and have their old music in the background when their talking about little dark age
Cause like 50% Of people who know the band hate their newer stuff. Even though they're objectively wrong
Christian Rogers Feels unfortunate to me because I feel their new music just keeps getting better and better, topping each previous album somehow every time.
MGMT are still high to this day
I like how the interviewer was like Wtf at 7:49
I g rI e Ve i N sT e Ri o
"its a worm"
goldenage He misses digging up worms.
Man these guys struggle hard at frisbee.
Is Andrew constantly tripping on shrooms lol
No appearantly overreacting on circumstances .
He does weed out of apples
🙄
I love how chill they are
Same
Love MGMT! Great interview and amazing editing.
Thank you, we're glad you enjoyed it. The show was editedby the presenter, Mariam Saab.
They should market Glooby Loops along with the album
Charisma Bros, Yes I agree. It could taste like shrooms or psychedelic drugs but not really be.
They have a Glooby Loops t-shirt!
we just letting him say that 7:39
Yes😔🤰
why did i watch this? i was genuinely curious how they made their music but all i got was memes.
I'm an actual idiot I've been listening to these guys for years and I've always thought they were British I-
lolll
the way andrew sings little dark age sounds british
"When You Die" stands with the "Big 3" as some of their best work....love this band, new album is very strong, definitely their best since the first album.
7:52 their eyebrowns lol
lol
This title suggests the albums congratulations and mgmt never existed or were terrible. I can assure you they exist and are amazing
Congratulations and MGMT are their two best albums, and years from now, they'll be considered the band's two groundbreaking masterpieces. Really not a fan of the new one.
*ITS A WORM*
Ben looks like my lecturer
i cant w the title of this video
im so happy MGMT has blessed us once again , love u
The best artists and music in decades!:)
I literally love Andrew I want to marry him
xD I have a problem
Same lol
Don’t we all
Andrew does have style tbh
1:02 somebody in the background sneezed and I have seen every interview of mgmt so many times that I know this. only god can save me.
MGMT, te amo
stan MGMT
Dance dance revolution
found the album just now. I think it is their best ever and more relevant than ever.
I wonder how MGMT feels about people on the right using their music for edits lol
I love these guys :)
Love this album
i saw a video about the trend that there was at the time with that song, the video was "little dark age portugal epic version" and i tell you the song plus the edit moved me
Your song inspired millions with many, many edits
Love these guys. Great album.
Anyone know where we could find whatever they filmed when they were messing around with the frisbee? Like was it a documentary of the making of the album?
I
Social media has made many of us so awkward.
They wanted to make "music to dance to".....but they booked the Orpheum in Boston.......you can't even stand up in there
does someone knows where the behind the scenes/recording/studio footage is from?
Does Andrew Still Surf?
LDA is an absolute work
This comment section is so annoying they opened with the three singles from the first album because they talked about that first and they talked about the new album for most of the interview and it’s ok to admit that Kids is a good song
Great album, hooked on a few songs...
Tbh
I cannot believe he is 35.
they look like acting they acting the whole interview lol
Absolute geniuses
Where did all the b-roll footage come from of them recording sounds, playing frisbee, and being in the studio?
I wonder the same thing!
@@cassidys-g332 album trailer
Still haunted by that single
love ben's answers
YES!
Que bello es Andrew💗
7:45
im sure they love being referred to as 'kids' lmao
Andrew's on twitter
When we thought 2016 was hard.
I hate how they have to say kids true MGMT fans would understand
10:42 no words.... i can’t
