You make it look so easy. However anything done well with skill and knowledge does look easy. Well done. But! I love the way you save pieces of furniture that look as if they'll never have another life. I understand that this restoration was at a customers request and the customer is always right. I love good wood furniture even if it isn't fashionable but I was sad to see this lovely wood painted. After you oiled and cleaned it it came up so well. Love your videos.
Hi Doreen, thanks very much for your lovely comment. I understand that not everyone likes painted furniture. I just try to do what I can to save this old quality furniture whether thats painting or restoring. Thanks for your continued support 😀😀
Wow, thanks! My dream would be to get to the point where I could do this thing i love and be in a position to give the finished piece to someone in need or sell and donate the proceeds to charity. Maybe one day.😃❤️
I love seeing your attention to detail on the inside of these pieces. That area most often goes ignored, but it does make a difference in how the piece functions. Even if I can't see a particular area, it bugs me to know I've done a half-ass job. For example, I always made my hand-sewn clothing as neat on the inside as the outside. My grandmother did intricate embroidery for over 50 years, and the back of her work was as perfect as the front. The "Dose of Daisy" is such a pleasure. We never tire of seeing her. Cheers from Oklahoma!!!
Hi Maribob. My attention to detail stems a little bit from my slight OCD i think but in this job I personally think it a plus!! My outlook when I do all of these jobs is "Would it be good enough to put in my house?" I'm quite fussy so if the answer is "Yes" then i know ive done a good job 😂😀❤
Beautiful work as always. I am very surprised at how much I like the gray with gold hardware! I would never have thought to pair them, but I think it looks very sharp!

Hi Shari. Thanks for your great comments, the paint is an Acrylic eggshell by a UK company called Johnstones. It doesn't need a top coat but sometimes i add one for extra protection. I actually added a coat of Howard's Feed n wax to this but forgot to film it. Daisy is an English cocker and the SHOW Cocker variety in the colour Blue Roan. I groom her myself and the last two cuts I have shaved her for the summer months but i usually use a stripping comb and trim her legs/ears etc. She's due another cut right now actually. I’ve thought that too but it seems the fashion is to have it painted. I have done a piece of stag and left the tops wood and they looked really nice 😀😀
Great video - gives me the confidence to give it a try! Can you let me know - what sander do you use and what grit paper is it? Also I saw the paint included a primer - what make of paint was it and what rate of dilution did you do for the sprayer! Many thanks!
Hi Gavin, glad I’ve given you the confidence to have a go. I use two sanders mainly, a Festool Rotex 90mm (expensive but it’s 3 sanders in one) and my 125mm Dewalt Random orbital which is a great sander and not that expensive (around £80) I only tend to use 120g and 240g sandpaper. The paint is use is an acrylic eggshell by Johnstones and when it comes to diluting to spray I tend to just do it by eye as I know the consistency I’m looking for. Just don’t add too much water at once, you don’t need much 😀👍
Wow David I think it's absolutely beautiful, I can't fault it. I'm assuming the client chose the colour, I love Grey in a home setting it's a calming colour, it's not for everyone but I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I bet daisy loved it too. Xx
I'm just considering painting exactly this suite with the dressing table and four poster bed. Just can't decide on a stylish colour combination ........ Regards
@@MayfieldRestorations Thank you, the challenge is to do it right once, isn't it ? I'm not concerned about the actual preparation or the painting itself, but the selection of a colour scheme which will suit both the furniture and the room it now lives in, much smaller than the bedroom in the UK. I'll also have to include a nod towards deeply rural Spain where I now live, and the local matrons are known to wander in for the occasional 'inspection'. Regards
@@ourfarmhouseinspain Keep it very simple. Look at furniture sold in Spain.. often in soft white.. the four poster if it has drapes would look good with soft muslin or voile!
@@adrianwillis2875 Adrian, you are correct that simplicity is the key. I'll be using a soft tone with a light colour accent which will suit the house and the culture here. I have renovated a farmhouse deep in the countryside here, and have the 'benefit' of occasional inspections by small groups of village matrons - never the men - who just happen to be 'passing by' the house which is over a kilometre from the village. I'm fortunate that they like me, and are genuinely curious about the house. The men are often unhappy with these visits because the ladies go home with ideas. The odd cooking lesson has raised my status somewhat too. Lovely people. Regards
This looks great! Given me some guidance for painting my stag minstrel bedroom set. A couple of the pieces have a really strong musty smell from the previous house I bought them from and was wondering if you had any tips on how to remove it. Thanks!
Hi Alex, glad my video has helped. Regarding musty smells you can try using a white vinegar and water wash which is good at deodorising the wood. Alternatively if that doesn't work then you would need to seal the bare wood inside the furniture with something like a shellac or a lacquer. You could also try using the howards feed n wax which will not only feed the wood but also it has a strong orange scent which may mask the smell. Some scented furniture waxes could also help. 😀👍
Every time I see grey, it reminds me of battleship grey, which I’m not a fan of. Although it’s now how I would of done the pieces, you did a beautiful job for the client.
Beautiful job, I’m keeping mine original but don’t know how to get rid of blooming and scratches . I keep polishing but it doesn’t work 😢 Any pointers would be gratefully received
@@adrianawhelan4856I’ve tried to get rid of scratches on minstrel pieces the problem is originally it was sprayed with tinted lacquer and is very difficult to match, if the blooming is heat marks from hot cups you can try a dry iron over a tea towel this works well.
@@TryDiy thank you. The blooming happened after it had been in storage for 6 months, the other pieces are all fine - it’s odd only one piece bloomed 🤷🏼♀️
Just a thought: Daisy in dusty workshop without a mask... never occurred to me before. Even sniffing clothes impregnated with dust from wood and varnish. Reminds me to put my work gear into washing machine after soaking and rinsing out dust that could clog up the wm
Hi Stephen, I am careful as to when i let Daisy in to the workshop, she's not in there all the time. I do have an industrial extractor as well as my sanders being hooked up to dust extraction. I appreciate your concern though, its very thoughtful, thanks 😀👍🐶
Hi Dawn. I actually use an acrylic Eggshell paint by a company called Johnstones. Regarding the dilution, I just do it by eye and I know the consistency I need to spray. It’s sort of like a consistency between single and double cream. Sorry that’s not very helpful 😀
Hi John, unfortunately there isn’t one single setting, it really depends on the viscosity of the material being sprayed. I tend to water down paint to a “single Cream” like consistency and test the spray pattern using different settings and once I’m happy I just go for it 😀👍
That looks lovely!. I have just bought a stag bureau and have never done anything like this before. Can i ask do you ever use varnish stripper? I have started to sand it, but i can still see the varnish, and i dont want to paint over that. Can i also ask what grit sandpaper you use? Do you ever sand through the veneer? I am nervous that will go through it by mistake!
Hi Fiona, I do use stripper especially if it’s veneered as it’s more than possible to sand through veneer. You could also try a carbide scraper but stag furniture topcoat is normally quite tough so stripper would probably be best. 😀😀

Beautiful job, I’m keeping mine original but don’t know how to get rid of blooming and scratches . I keep polishing but it doesn’t work 😢 Any pointers would be gratefully received
Hi Adriana. Have you tried using "Howard's Restor-a-finish"? This can have good results depending on the severity of the scratches. 😃
@@MayfieldRestorations I will definitely try that thank you. Will it get rid of the blooming issue?
@@adrianawhelan4856I’ve tried to get rid of scratches on minstrel pieces the problem is originally it was sprayed with tinted lacquer and is very difficult to match, if the blooming is heat marks from hot cups you can try a dry iron over a tea towel this works well.
@@TryDiy thank you. The blooming happened after it had been in storage for 6 months, the other pieces are all fine - it’s odd only one piece bloomed 🤷🏼♀️
Very beautiful
Thanks again Linda 😀😀
Amazing…
Thanks 😄
Perfect
Thanks so much 😀😀
What type of paint is it you used? I love the finish
It’s acrylic eggshell paint 😀👍
Fantastic x
Thanks Bridget 😀😀
I have a stag minstrel tall boy. I will be using Frenchic paint with primer. Do I need to sand before use? Thank you.
Personally I would clean, dry then scuff sand slightly. 😀👍
Can I ask please what paint you used and the dilution ratios. I have a bedroom set I would love to do. It's absolutely stunning very talented.
Hi Dawn. I actually use an acrylic Eggshell paint by a company called Johnstones. Regarding the dilution, I just do it by eye and I know the consistency I need to spray. It’s sort of like a consistency between single and double cream. Sorry that’s not very helpful 😀
Beautiful work👍🤍
Thank you so much 👍😀
Hi, what is the name of the tool that you used to remove the damaged drawer runner? Thanks.
It’s a painters multi tool. Here is the Amazon link. amzn.to/3DdTdMn
Thank you 👍
Hi. Great job. What setting/speed do you use on your spray gun. Currently paint by hand but spraying gives a great finish. Thanks.
Hi John, unfortunately there isn’t one single setting, it really depends on the viscosity of the material being sprayed. I tend to water down paint to a “single Cream” like consistency and test the spray pattern using different settings and once I’m happy I just go for it 😀👍
Very nice Work 😊👋
Thanks Lilly 😀👍
That looks lovely!. I have just bought a stag bureau and have never done anything like this before. Can i ask do you ever use varnish stripper? I have started to sand it, but i can still see the varnish, and i dont want to paint over that. Can i also ask what grit sandpaper you use? Do you ever sand through the veneer? I am nervous that will go through it by mistake!
Hi Fiona, I do use stripper especially if it’s veneered as it’s more than possible to sand through veneer. You could also try a carbide scraper but stag furniture topcoat is normally quite tough so stripper would probably be best. 😀😀
@MayfieldRestorations Thank you, that's really helpful.
Is Stag a brand or a descriptive word? Either way it's gorgeous. And 💕🐾🌸
Hi. STAG is a well known brand here in the UK. If you look at Etsy you’ll see many painted STAG pieces 😀👍
Beautiful do you only do one coat of paint❤
I tend to do two coats but dont always film both coats. Apologies if I forgot to mention this is the video 😀👍
Would have done handles either silver or black.
That’s fAir enough Barbara. 😀👍
Hello. What grade did you use to Scuff sand tops please?
Hi John, I used 120Grit on the Random orbital sander.😃👍
YOUR PIECES TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL AND YOU DID A QUALITY JOB AT REFINISHING THEM. I HAVE TAKEN A LIKING TO THE COLOR OF GRAY. THE GRAY YOU USED IS A PERFECT SHADE - NOT TOO LIGHT, NOT TOO DARK. I HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN WHERE ENTIRE ROOMS WERE COLORS OF BLACK, GRAY AND WHITE - SOMETHING LIKE WE USED TO SEE ON OUR BLACK AND WHITE TV'S. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT NOW THAT WE CAN PRINT IN COLOR, THEPAST BLACK ANDGRAY IS USED FOR GETTING YOUR ATTENITON. A POP OF COLOR USED TO BE USED TO GRAB ONE'S ATTENTION. IT'S INTERESTING HOW THAT WORKS OUT. U KIVE WGAT TGET;VE DIBE TI SERVE AS KEGS TI TGUS DRESSER, U GATE TGISE RIYBDM SKABTED KEGS, I HATED THOSE LEGS INCE THEY CAME OUT WITH THE MID-CENTURY FURNITURE. MY OLD NEIGHBORS AT THE BEGINNING OF THEIR MARRIAGE HAD SOME MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILT BY A FAMOUS FURNITURE MAKER. THEY STILL HAD THE FURNITURE WHEN THEY BOTH DIED. I'LL BET IT WAS WORTH A PRETTY PENNY. (i JUST HEARD YOU SAY THE AINT WAS A BROWN. HMM, IT STILL LOOKS GRAY TO ME, LOL!
Hi Laura. Thanks for your continued support and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated 😀👍
