Architect & carpenter craft tiny (120-sq-ft) backyard studio

- When architect Sarah Deeds wanted to set up a home office, there wasn't an extra room in the 500-square-foot one-bedroom home she shares with her carpenter partner John McBride, so she looked to the backyard for space. There- tucked into a back corner- she and McBride built the largest structure allowed by the city of Berkeley without a permit (though they did get an electrical permit).
At 120 square feet their backyard hideaway was carefully designed to maximize space. Deeds shaped the building as an irregular pentagon to take full advantage of every corner. For the wider end McBride custom-built a wall-to-wall sofa (large enough for sleeping), using just a steel support bar (no legs) to give more space for the wooden storage drawers underneath. The narrower end houses a desk that curves like the office to allow space for Deeds, two clients and a desktop shaped to hold a full set of architecture plans (plus thin storage drawers custom-designed for plans).
The space is condensed, but Deeds sees that as an advantage: it puts you closer to your views and nature. And since the footprint of the office is minimal, there's still plenty of vegetation in the 3,100-square-foot backyard.

"The smaller the building, the more connected you are to the outside." I think this is the main reason why I like these tiny houses. Love the siding on this one.
Left comments on this before....it could easily be made to incorp. a kitchen, bedroom, great room; in other words,...one could live in this full time without too much fanfare.
Nice work to Ms. Sarah Deeds.
Thx.
This is a lovely workspace and building. I love how it looks especially the siding. It doesn't matter how the couple talks over each other. That happens all the time.
That exterior is heavy duty awesome.
Super cute office with a great use of discarded wood and a "simple is better" mindset. Thanks for sharing this.
I live in a little backyard home this size. I'd like to get my own "tiny home" and put it in a friend's backyard. That's my dream. Love tiny spaces! :)
They did a wonderful job of creating a workplace that's so pleasing to the eye and at the same time serves their needs.
good idea. would be complicated with the shelf above, but if we could lift the desk out of the way there would be room for a trio to practice in the space.
Well thought out. You have a place for everything. Brilliant, quality and oh so inviting. Clap clap clap clap
I like the separate home and office as it helps keep personal and work hassle separate.
Kirsten...another good video...kudos. Anther person "below" noted that 120sq' is good for one person to live in....most people are not seeking to live in 2500sq' homes and then have a "toy house"....they want to live in the 120sq' home....
Great inspiration. Building a 10'x20' backyard house does not require a building permit. Anything larger it gets very complicated
that require city and county compliance as would a conventional house. Windows spacing and foundation must be to code and all that jazz. Staying with 120 sf is the way to go. You get away with everything. An electrical permit is cheap, but plumbing for water gets very expensive and out the window as to live in it. I'm going to attempt this soon with my own creativity as the author's husband. Its not that complicated but design is key. Wood is cheap as other reusable materials can purchase at your local ReStore. I would estimate less than $10k if you do all of the labor. Foundation would be the same as you would design a deck with concrete pillars poured into the ground. This is one of the greatest opportunities given to SF (single-family, not
San Francisco) homeowners who have the space in their own backyard. Its cheap and fun to do bringing out your talents you
did not know you had. Kudos to the owner/builder/architect/carpenter/authors all in one !!
I have that very same blue-speaker Tivoli player in my small living space. And, oooh, yeah - Flor tiles rock!! Great, inspiring studio space. Really like it that the buckeye tree is an integral part of the concept.
Great Project. good for you..
Awsome guys.😍
The redwood exterior is beautiful.
The windows in the roof allowing light from above is my favorite part. reminds me of Ernest Flaggs small houses
Tivoli Model 1 radio, nice.
Really nice home, i like it. Now all you need is an out-house to take a crap.
Beautiful home!
That shed looks really well done. You could start a successful business making these.
With only watching 1 minute into this video I can tell she has very good vocabulary
most interesting channel on youtube, please keep the videos of small homes coming
I have a question for these tiny houses, why not build a second floor to maximize the space and put some semi walls to make room for the kids? it will diffidently increase the price but why I haven't seen a full second floor in all the videos in this channel?
Right? it's so addicting! I can't get away! Help haha
Nice design.
love it!
The roof to my mothers church was built by shipbuilders in the 1720's, from the outside it looks like any other church but from the inside it's like the inside hull of a large boat.
I've seen this video.
We want to figure out how to advantage of all the extra room.
Thank you.
It is a great use of space.
She says "I I I me me me"
He says " we we we"
i look at the building and i see that its completed as far as the building of it goes and that the carpenter did a good job. but i wonder how much credit for that building she shares with him??? from this doesnt seem like alot.
Beautiful! How I would love to have a little studio like this for recording. Gob smack gorgeousness!
the desk top should be able to lift. Would make life easier
In the old days of drafting tables, you couldn't have done it this way. Thank goodness for CAD programs -- they only take up as much space as your computer's footprint. ;)
Zam, nice siding!
I love this type of stuff.
Is it just me or does the backyard studio look better than the houses around it?
Try pull-out baskets beneath a daybed. To sort through a basket, place it on the bed.
I luv it 💓 so nice!
I wanted to have a loft with half bath below, but made the building too tall. It would have required a complicated permit and also might have made too big an impact on my small yard.
Its funny when the guy tries to talk and she just talks over him. LOL
That is awesome....
For spaciousness, face furniture towards large, long windows, such as a double sliding door facing into the garden.
looks cozy: Zen. like the carpet tile. sweet architect office. nice table real estate. warm redwood siding. why to the right of door the wall bevels? I would use EL Light Tape instead of LED, less electricity. like the shed facing south for winter's sun. so 120ft sq is the most w/o a permit? fines? like the book-shelf. how much to build? well insulated? i'm studying arch in berk. good job.
For additional income, rent to a quiet tenant.
Plumbing may not be needed. Use a basin and camping shower bag on a hook to wash dishes, clothes or take a shower. Use biodegradable soaps and discard grey water outdoors in the garden. For momentary privacy, surround a portable composting toilet or shower with a circular shower curtain.
Use a folding shelf to cook, dine or study while sitting on an adjacent daybed. Try a portable stove top and under-counter fridge. Place a cutting board over the fridge.
Store everything away and use the space for other activities. Portable possessions can decrease the size of a home.
For longer daylight and ventilation, try skylights.
PS, I really like the curved desk. If I'd known about that when we remodeled the cottage (see my video), I would have done the counter that way.
shes adorable
oh I thought this was their home my bad its cool looking the O like the programming off grid and the small house in Hawaii along with the tree house one as well this not so much. I also like the house that recycles the rain water
Thank you so much! Gives a great insight.
inspiring design !
Try pull-out STORAGE ottomans beneath a padded bench to create additional seating or a larger bed as needed. Place the pads from the back of the bench over the ottomans. Store a wardrobe and kitchenware in an ottoman.
Beautiful.
I'd guess they mostly sleep in their home. This is only a home office in their back yard. Although they do have a couch you could sleep on if you really wanted to, which you can see in the video.
I wish I could get more background as to why she says she "doesn't recommend" building the maximum unpermitted size structure? Did she have problems?
Off topic- but I have a friend who looks and sounds just like this lady. Bizarre when that happens.
Clever!
Is it true that if you put a structure on cement blocks you dont have to pay extra on property tax?
Great video! Any idea on how much she spent constructing this house? I noticed they used lots of salvaged goods like the wood. And how long it took to build?
Rather than a desk, try a handheld computer and clipboard. Take your work anywhere, such as a park or beach. Try architectural programs that you can email to your clients. Replace books, shelving and office supplies with a computer.
Cool
Plantboy, I noticed the same thing. The lady uses I alot. You don't hear we or us from her. It's like he is an afterthought to her. The first time he spoke, she attempted to interrupt him, but he talked thru her until she shut up. After that it was all her and that was how she liked it. I became so obsessed with her being overbearing I lost interest in the building.
hey why do you not recommend staying in the un-permit required building?
Agreed.
She mentioned that she wouldn’t recommend going with an unpermitted structure. Why is that?
Why you are against building a 120 sf house to avoid the building permit? I'm thinking in doing exactly that. :-)
No mention of cost...
Nice, but I can't live without a washer and dryer and a dish washing machine.
Oh, did I mention beautiful?
I take it this is Berkeley, California ?
I want to buy you a sturdy but thin folder to put your plans in so you can slide them back into the desk. BUT I DON'T KNOW YOU !!!
So basically it's a place to store her desk?
Gain many of my future building ideas here. Hopefully you will visit one of my creations.
What are you talking about? That makes no sense to say, " The people arent forced to live in tiny houses, but they do. That means that I can't afford to live in a tiny house and have to live in a big house!"
Hi Malegnius I kept fairly careful accounting. It seems that I can't link you to my blog post on the topic in this comment feed, but you can find it if you google "deedsdesign: accounting for the clubhouse" the accounting includes some landscape work.
Cool but I couldn't help but notice when one of them is talking the other tries to talk over the other and the person speaking gets loud quickly like "Hey I'm speaking, go play in the yard".... : )
I can't get the video to play. Darn it!
where do they sleep ?
Email me and I'll be happy to explain. The quick answer is that its better to get things in writing before pouring concrete to avoid stress.
If it were on wheels, they wouldn't have to pay additional property tax.
I didn't find this very interesting at all. Sure it looks nice, but it isn't a house just a shed and it doesn't have any interesting features to maximize the space or other smart solutions. It's just a shed with a table in it.
Everyone have junk
naja ?
