No intro this week, but a very special guest appearance! Massive thanks to John Robertson for making a cameo appearance in this video (big fan). You can find more about him at his social's which are included at the end of the video. Look forward to hearing what you think to my fave Sephiroth Design and whether you're hyped or not for FF7 Remake!
The Artist Mark Flynn you know... After 23 years. I never noticed that Sephiroth is wearing a Soldier 1st Class Belt Buckle Harness just as Cloud Strife is!🤯 Thanks you for making me aware of that!
Excluding Remake, Advent Children has the best design. Followed by the original and Amano drawings because I just love Amano style. So I gotta give a shout out to Dissidia even though I never played it for incorporating Amano's ideas into it.
He has a wing pattern on his coat. the intricacies of the design are bearitful. And they added the dissidia belt and that's where he puts materia in. Remake design it's just beatiful.
AC took him to an extreme, and his voice actor made him that much more menacing. It takes the win for now, but I'm very much liking the redesign and excited for what's to come. That said, great video! First time watcher of your channel and looking forward to watching more!
I love the Advent Children design, it's the best look for him. Just wanted to take time to appreciate how great the movie was and it's highly underrated. They called it a Tetsuya Nomura vanity project but I enjoyed it. Yazoo, Loz and Kadaj were hilarious.
Sephiroth has an amazing design, I personally love what they did with him in Kingdom Hearts. How about reviewing King Dedede from the Kirby series? That guy has gone through some MAJOR design changes over the years~
14:21 Nomura likes belts, straps, and buckles; do you remember Lulu in FF10, her outfit consisted mostly nothing but belts and what seems to be an overcoat with fur-trim.
It’s the OG Menu Profile pic for me. The closest thing I’ve seen was exhibited in a few cutscenes from remake. 1) When cloud first sees him next door and freaks out. That side profile. 2) Right after Barret talks to Cloud about ancients outside the sector and Sephiroth tells Cloud he failed again. Sephiroth AF 3) The meeting at the reaction “a touching reunion” moment. The reason I chose cutscenes is because I felt like he looked different in EVER cutscene (to me). And also, a part of his flair is his personality along with it
for me personally i love the original nomura design one because his hair looks slicked back,i hate that in all future versions his hair is parted in the middle.
Is it weird that i got introduced to ff7's world through the movie? Its like the first time i watched it i fell in love with it immediately and i feel like I've known ff7 ever since. This makes me want to watch advent children again.
I dont care what is the best design i love him in all his designs after all he is sephiroth we all fall in love with him befor they make him more realistic so the design will make little different to a true sephirothmaniac and the most beautiful thing about ff7 remake is that they show us varied super hot realistic expression in his face
One thing I noticed is Kingdom Hearts 1 switches the side his wing is on. In every other case where he has a wing it’s on his right side, and this seems to be a theme since both Genesis and Angeal have their wings on their off-hand side as well. I suppose it makes sense because if his sword arm had transmuted into a wing how would he stab people? I’ve got a special fondness for KH Sephiroth since that was my first encounter with the character. I wandered into the bonus battle, knew nothing about the character as I’d never played the PS games but all I knew was he was hot and had bitchin’ music, it was love at first fight. However I think I like the original’s eyes best, they’re so bright. And the remake’s costume is best, I like the extra details.
I named my dog Sephi after this villain. That Nibelheim scene burned him into my 12 year old consciousness. And the way the game slowly introduced him made him the most terrifying villain I ever battled. Straight up didn’t breathe throughout the entire fight
IMHO the best Sephiroth design is an unofficial one, and not very well known except among the most diehard of fans, that of course being the pencil lineart drawing I did of him in my 6th grade history book in 2004 in the asian history section. The incorrect proportions and poorly imitated manga style really add an unconventional flair to his typical Nomura style.
I'm not saying it's the best design, but something about the default Dissidia NT renders that is just so elegant and ethereal. It is more "realistic but anime" style, so smooth and often lit with blues and purples in the scenes. The features are very light and then his thick black eye-lashes just make his eyes and condescending gaze really pop. Every image of him from Dissidia just says "I am Sephiroth, I know exactly what I am doing and I am better than anything you could possibly hope to be." It makes him seem more otherworldly and god-like and makes me think of him like the greek Adonis or Apollo. But I guess they are in a space between worlds so... why not?
In the very beginning, the devs have been discussing a lot about Sephiroth...he,alongside with Vincent Valentine, was intended to be a female charachter...Later,they wanted him to be Aerith first love..then,his brother...In any case they wanted a sort of relationship of some kind between these two charachters...
I know its such a basic bitch opinion but god damn sephiroth is one of the best villains in media, he’s so imposing and threatening even though his design is human
Now he's in Smash Ultimate as well, and honestly I think that's a pretty good depiction of him. For me the winner is still the original ff7, the more angular look afforded by the artstyle is the most menacing I think he has been. Then advent children - I like the dark eyes and how fluid the long hair looks during the fight, and also his sword just looks so long. Then Remake. I'm not so keen on the rounding out of his face, and I would prefer that his bangs remained more pronounced and angular. I think Remake is fantastic for basically everybody else's appearance, eg cloud, tifa, yuffie, Barret all look OUTSTANDING, but the Sephiroth isn't quiiiite right for me.
The remake design for him is actually one of the weaker redesigns. He looks way too young and pretty. Looking at the original FF7 character portrait of him as well as Advent Children, he's supposed to be gaunt, pale and creepy-looking, and that version of Sephiroth works much better as a villain than this "humanized" prettyboy one. The Crisis Core model was bad for the same reason.
KH2 Sephiroth is my favourite, While completely at the same time being so over the top and unnecessary. for Simplistic design, the FF7R has done a wonderful job with its Sephiroth Design.
Ideal viewing for the first day of UK lockdown. Hope things are going well on your end dude. While I love the Kingdom Hearts Cloud, with Vincent cape and claw I don't really like the Sephiorth one with its Batman cape like thing going with the cape. I don't mind its black wing though, keep that. Also I like the extra added buckles on his coat in his Advent Children redesign. They're just small and subtle enough that adds that extra layer of cool, rather than the over designed Batman thing of KH. Plus it also sports the lone black wing (at one point) to boot! Also just as the video started and you were talking about the Masamune, I thought probably the only other weapon to rival it, though its a gun, is Joker's revolver from the Batman 89 movie.
Getting there, though my brother came back from work early, saying that he got sent home as he's not feeling too well so it really is full isolation. Also he said he'd been feeling up and down but we're getting there... Until all the Buckfast tonic wine dries up for him as I saw they've stopped production, so no doubt that'll be the next thing folk will be rushing out to buy in bulk when word spreads across social media. Fingers crossed this all blows over sooner rather than later, otherwise I'll seriously need to reconsider my channel's direction for abit. As it's largely for promoting up and coming bands in the local Glasgow metal/rock scene, but ofcourse with everything shut down and cancelled its gonna be abit tricky lol
Am I the only one who his kinda bothered how they changed his hair after FF7 and Kingdom Hearts, they got rid of that one longer bang on his left side? And it looks like the remake sorta gave it back to him, as in some shots it looks like it's a tad bit bigger than the other
I love me some Sephy Poo. When I first started playing with him it was in Dissidia duodecim 012 on the psp. We became best buds. I had him on lvl 100. When I saw he was in smash too, that's when I was like welp, time to buy smash and I bought smash and I spoiled him in Smash too. Seph will always have it made with me. Lol I'm always spoiling him, I wish he had his own game so I could pamper the mess out of him. 😊🌼
Any design of Sephiroth is best for me. Okay, yes his design for the Remake is the most crisp design. I do personally like how he looks in Dissidia, but his eyes are just so flippin gorgeous in this remake.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Out of curiousity what don't you like about them? :0 I don't usually like chibi designs, but I love the ones in that game because of the more correct proportions and the softness of the style. Sorry if I came off as rude btw, I was messing around. cx
Advent/crisis core are my fav i like the remake but the face lessens his majestic vibe a little for me, which was one of the biggest rules they kept while making advent - keep his majestic features(even voice) at all costs. I think that mindful effort is really clear when you compare advent to other renditions
BTW, is 'winner winner, chicken dinner' a reference of RuPaul's drag race? jk, did my research, but I couldn't help being reminded about this TV reality show
Remake Cloud is definitely hitting all of the right notes, from the semi-realizable hair and eyebrows right down to the pale complexion and gaunt arms that make you question how it's physically possible for him to swing that Buster Sword. When it comes to his foil Sephiroth, however, I much prefer the original design for conveying everything about the character and history of Sephiroth while being just unique enough. There are reasons why that's not just some 30-plus-year-old's nostalgia talking. On top of the original concept arts and Battle Menu icon, there are 3 other important looks here before I prattle on , and you can see them at 2:163:31 and 3:48 : Let's think about the key traits (without spoiling too much given that Remake is around the corner...) that we know about Sephiroth: young but mentally rugged war hero turned evil, unquestionably introverted, extraordinary genetics and physical capabilities, affinity for longswords and height advantage in combat (yet also capable with magic), and tortured by a conflicted nature that is gradually crafted by his both positive and negative interactions with others. That's a lot but a conflicted villain was and is certainly not a wholly new in Japanese storytelling. Sephiroth's original look remains iconic by blending simplicity with key unique physical traits (some of which were lost in future revisions). Now, let's line up each character trait with the design: *Worn Warrior*: At 2:16 we see a rare glimpse of Sephiroth's physical shaping: toned but not bulging and lightly-tanned (to what seems to be a contradictory point but isn't). Fairly obvious that these are conveying a world-traveling warrior that is diligent in their training but rarely needs to exert effort to complete mundane military tasks (especially with magic). More importantly, look closely at his face shape and look at the forlorn Battle Menu icon/concept art of his head's profile view. Later renditions of Sephiroth make the mistake of moving away from a road-weary tan and soldier trope-like cheek and chin structure, in favor of a fantasy pale skin that overcommunicates his physiological twisting and a more generic facial structure. *Introverted*: Though it's far more interesting to watch body language for this, you still have downward eyebrows, often-flat lip expressions, and focused eyes to indicate this. Later designs didn't stray from this, thankfully (lip size regardless). *Twisted Physiology*: Again without spoiling too much, you know that Sephiroth is ex-SOLDIER like Cloud and also has the glowing blue eyes. More interestingly, he also shares Aeris/Aerith's hair part. Shamefully, later renditions would curve this more when there was perfect reason (and really, excuse) to make a striking physiological design choice. As for the "Cat's Eyes" effect, it certainly adds to a scene like 3:31 or the Nibelheim/JENOVA reactor scene, but should be used only in certain states or dialed-back otherwise since promotional art opts for ordinary eyes. *Combat Style*: As mentioned in the video, his imposing sword length matches his own height. Again, even if the sword isn't realistic(ally useful, albeit a cursed sword in a magic-capable world), his affinities don't come across as juvenile when you consider stature in combat. 3:48 shows his stancing and focus. Important detail. And again, with magic, there's little need for him to be super-muscular. *Conflicted Nature*: Sephiroth was highly-respected and even adored yet formal and curt with others. Events would lead him to hate people, in general. Again, the video brings up his white flowing hair and sword contrasting the flowing black coat. But again, later designs would add too much to the elegant simplicity of the design. The blue and red trims in the KH design distract from an otherwise neutral color palette without adding anything BECAUSE they conflict. Had it been one color or the other, there might have been reason or intrigue. Add too many more belts, zipper, latches, etc. and you begin to not only call the necessity of the base outfit's attaching mechanisms into question but also begin to betray the fashion sensibility that would be believable from the character's mind. Remake not only twinges an iconic design using the more generic and overbearing parts of the Advent Children physiology, but also adds more belting and details with which a focused and conflicted warrior that already uses a bottle of shampoo per washing wouldn't bother. I know this went on a bit, but it was fun and cathartic to put together considering how often I get pushback when stating in one line that "this Pokémon design" or "that design revision" is bad without being able to go into the needed detail. And I hope it's useful food for thought that reciprocates at least some of the work that you put into these videos!
i actually dont like the new design at all. Its basically taking away the anime'ish style that made cloud so.... likable. It was clouds likeness too characters like crono and sephiroth being well desinged anime'ish style as well was more then what made him so amazing. Although the action fights they gave us in kingdom hearts is my all time favorite battles. He is my Favorite villain, although i had too admit that if dissidia was made wihtout any outside interferance in the villain menu, that sephiroth would just be a enforcer. Although i hate the character i see Kefka as being the most calculated. Although sephiroth is main stream villain that so many want too imitate in mmo's.
The Artist Mark Flynn ah. Fair enough. Didn’t know if you knew so I thought I would say something. I didn’t know he did more cosplays aside from Kirito, I’ll have to look them up. You know, Kirito has a lot of designs. Maybe a Kirito design video when the new game comes out? Just a thought, if you don’t like SAO I understand, just an idea.
The Artist Mark Flynn Lol, well it’s definitely worth a go. I recommend it, it’s my favourite series. He’s got at least 3 designs in just the first season, then a bunch in the games. It’s set in the 2040s where Virtual Reality has taken a new step forward called Full Dive. All 5 senses immersed completely into these games. But on the first day of the NerveGear’s, and worlds, first VRMMORPG, ten thousand players are trapped where if they die in game, their brains in the real world are microwaved. It’s got games, a movie, and 3 seasons of the anime, all based on a light novel series. I’m not good at making things sound interesting at times, but I do hope you check it out. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Personally I'm going with the OG 7 and advent look, not too much is going with the design. Giving him a more grimacing but regal threatening persona. The Dissidia gives him a more decorative look as "look i can be hip too!" so can't take too seriously. And KH style; 🤨 i get color scheme, but i feel like its a lil too much. Almost if to say "if y'all can look dramatic than so can I." like the saying... "Sometimes less is better." and that's the case with this look.
The multiple belts were inspired by Michael Jackson’s Bad era. That’s easy to see. Yep! Remake is the way to go. Michael Jackson has a more lasting affect with style and in music than most give him credit for. Good video bro.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn oH you mean when hes wearing different clothes. that doesnt rly make him different. just a nice gimmik to see your favorite characters dress up in another way sometimes.. doesnt bother me.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Nomura's final boss designs, which go back to Neo Exdeath in FFV, tend to share a lot of similar visual motifs. Sprawling, chimeric body horror transformations comprised of conjoined monsters and clones, often giving way to some mix of demonic and angelic features and/or overt asymmetry. This extends to other games like Parasite Eve and Kingdom Hearts.

I like the video about the wing can we talk about his hair to and how I wish they animated his hair to be like the original and advent children.
idk man, I like advent children face, menacing looking. the new sepiroth looks like hes in constant duck face or smoulder by flynn rider
Dissidia looks the most cleanest
Remake looks the most realistic
Advent Children looks the most original
And Kingdom hearts 2 look is the most animest
Crisis core is best
Hey Raiko, not related but mad respect for the profile picture
Crisis Core looks the most Majestic
Can't believe that advent children still looks so good.
There's something about the Advent Children design's eyes. I love how they are so dark
So piercing too
Yea😈😈
It's kinda hard for me to see his pretty eyes because the lighting and also fast scenes
Excluding Remake, Advent Children has the best design. Followed by the original and Amano drawings because I just love Amano style. So I gotta give a shout out to Dissidia even though I never played it for incorporating Amano's ideas into it.
Well actually remake’s design is pretty much the same as Advent Children. Only the CGI is improved but the design has literally no big difference

They got rid of George Newburn so the remake has already lost points for me. You just can't beat that silky smooth and menacing tone.
Not-A-Witch exactly!!!
Have you heard the new voice? It’s not too far off tbh
I still love the new voice
George for the win!

@@ArtistMarkFlynn Now that you mention it the eyes are giving me Coraline vibes 😂
seph on top
Lmao thoes opening words
well at the very least, the belts of the new design isnt as ridiculous as in guilty gear, where every cloth and accessory is made up of belts.
Bruh, Trunk's hair is not a retcon, it has always been blue in the manga.
It's completely a retcon. He has purple hair in the entirety of z and super even has him appear in flashbacks with it.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn ig when you're talking about the anime, ig so, but the purple hair was never canon to begin with
@@ArtistMarkFlynn also great video btw, don't wanna seem like I didn't enjoy it
I hope we’ll all still be alive when the final part is released 😅
Either SQEX will take a lifetime or hopefully we survive the pandemic
No mention of Crisis Core?
Didn't think Sephiroth really stood out too much, but I go into more depth with crisis core in the upcoming tifa video.
Advent/crisis core are my fav i like the remake but the face lessens his majestic vibe a little for me, which was one of the biggest rules they kept while making advent - keep his majestic features(even voice) at all costs. I think that mindful effort is really clear when you compare advent to other renditions
My favorite design is the KH 2 version
BTW, is 'winner winner, chicken dinner' a reference of RuPaul's drag race?
jk, did my research, but I couldn't help being reminded about this TV reality show
It isn't! I do watch drag race sometimes but it's just an expression I've always loved! Haha
1.nice video
2.show rayman some love
3.have a nice day
Some day!
I never put together zemnas and them look like sephiroth....so square been remaking his design for years
Crisis core was my favourite
I can smell the Sora episode in the horizon... sorry
Ori+AC/ACC+Remake/Rebirth
Remake Cloud is definitely hitting all of the right notes, from the semi-realizable hair and eyebrows right down to the pale complexion and gaunt arms that make you question how it's physically possible for him to swing that Buster Sword. When it comes to his foil Sephiroth, however, I much prefer the original design for conveying everything about the character and history of Sephiroth while being just unique enough. There are reasons why that's not just some 30-plus-year-old's nostalgia talking.
On top of the original concept arts and Battle Menu icon, there are 3 other important looks here before I prattle on , and you can see them at 2:16 3:31 and 3:48 :
Let's think about the key traits (without spoiling too much given that Remake is around the corner...) that we know about Sephiroth: young but mentally rugged war hero turned evil, unquestionably introverted, extraordinary genetics and physical capabilities, affinity for longswords and height advantage in combat (yet also capable with magic), and tortured by a conflicted nature that is gradually crafted by his both positive and negative interactions with others.
That's a lot but a conflicted villain was and is certainly not a wholly new in Japanese storytelling. Sephiroth's original look remains iconic by blending simplicity with key unique physical traits (some of which were lost in future revisions). Now, let's line up each character trait with the design:
*Worn Warrior*: At 2:16 we see a rare glimpse of Sephiroth's physical shaping: toned but not bulging and lightly-tanned (to what seems to be a contradictory point but isn't).
How about sora's designs from kingdom hearts please
i actually dont like the new design at all.
Who's Sephiroth's or Cloud's?
0:48 Uh- dude. He’s dressed as Kirito from Sword Art Online... the first one is anyway.
Yeah I couldn't find many decent quality pics of his Sephiroth so made a poor call with image choices!
I honestly don't know anything about it! It's one of the reasons I goofed in the first place lol.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
you forgot final fantasy dissidia opera omnia
Mention that one in the tifa episode that is going up today!
redo sephiroth in smash
Kh sephiroth is the best imo
Dissidia NT has the best Sephiroth design, imo.
The remake?
@@Killer_Kris7 Is similar to his 7 look, which I approve. Just not digging his KH look.
The multiple belts were inspired by Michael Jackson’s Bad era. That’s easy to see. Yep! Remake is the way to go. Michael Jackson has a more lasting affect with style and in music than most give him credit for. Good video bro.
The best Sephiroth design is shirtless Sephiroth 😜
Kingdom Hearts 1 Sephiroth
Is the worst
What youre talking about? I cant remember Sephiroth having a different design only the one time when you meet him in Kingdom Hearts...
I mean... The different designs are in the video? Lol
@@ArtistMarkFlynn oH you mean when hes wearing different clothes. that doesnt rly make him different. just a nice gimmik to see your favorite characters dress up in another way sometimes.. doesnt bother me.
I hope I'll be alive two.
Although it sorta feels weird giving both to the Remake, it's honestly a bad thing is it.
Crisis Core op
Safer Sephiroth is inspired by the seraphim angels, not from kefka.
Interesting! Kefka must have been influenced by them too!
It's literally the same one as crises core sepheroth
