Hi Folks, I started this video over 6 months ago, recording everything back in November. Unfortunately, *checks calendar* I'm releasing it in June, long after the TOTK hype and the Game Awards window I had hoped for. There's a reason for this delay and my recent inactivity. Trigger Warning - Sad comment incoming. At the end of 2023, I became more active on UA-cam after years of inactivity. I was really happy with the videos I made and had even quit my full-time job to focus on the channel and some other freelance projects. It was a bit scary, but I felt positive about this new direction. Sadly, right after leaving my job, my cat Logan (featured in the best Shadow the Hedgehog design video) passed away. Then, a month later, my Mum passed away after a long battle with cancer. As you can imagine, these losses turned my life upside down. These events forced me to slow down, which is why the video I'm releasing today took so long to complete. The short version is, I'll be okay. I don't need sympathy; it's been hard, but I'm getting through it one day at a time. I've debated whether to address this on the channel, as I've always valued the audience I've had here over the years. Ultimately, I want you all to know I haven't given up on the channel, and there are reasons for my absence. I hope this hasn't bummed anyone out-it's not my intention. Enjoy every day, try to stay positive, and be there for the ones you care about! Become a bald man and rant about the inconsequential logic of the Hyrule Historia. See you all soon. Mark
Hyrule Historia implies that Wind Waker takes place during the adult timeline after Link has been sent back to his child days. In other words, he didn't just "fuck off". Its that he literally stopped existing.
Yeah. There is no Link in the Adult Timeline because he was poofed out of existence by Zelda using the Ocarina of Time (his memories and his possession of the Triforce of Courage joined with a younger version of himself shortly before meeting Zelda for the first time). So both games are sequels to Ocarina of Time, just following different timeline endings - the past (Child Link or Courage Timeline) and the future (Adult Zelda or Wisdom Timeline). The odd timeline out is the Downfall Timeline, or Power Timeline, where Link was killed by Ganondorf or Ganon during the final showdown at Ganon's Castle. This is weird because we don't see this timeline in the ending of the game. That's why many of us think it actually branched off separately, perhaps even before Ocarina of Time due to Cadence of Hyrule time travel schenanigans (implied to take place immediately prior to OoT featuring the same Ganondorf), and leading into Four Swords Adventures and then A Link to the Past instead. But that only works if we throw out the placement of FSA and the Downfall Timeline and assume Cadence of Hyrule as timeline-canon. In any case, Downfall Timeline is DEFINITELY following a version of the Imprisoning War where Ganon beat Link but was sealed by the Sages. And none of these are the Imprisoning War of Tears of the Kingdom, which either is an entirely separate timeline splitting off from Skyward Sword due to time travle schenanigans, or else is a recursive Imprisoning War (as we know many characters are reincarnated in this series - Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Twinrova, Malon, Talon, Ingo, Gormon, Biggoron, Postman, Happy Mask Salesman, Mama MuYan, etc).
@@Degdreams As I said before, you can discount that. It doesn't change the argument. Also, Cadence of Hyrule dev staff say they know where it takes place in the timeline, specifically.
@@Marandahir Well at this point we're arguing the validity of even including the game into the conversation. I'm not arguing with you about the timeline. We're on two separate wavelengths. Like I'm saying you cannot "assume its timeline canon" at all and shouldn't even be mentioned due to its status of being officially recognized as noncanon. In layman's terms: Trying to fit Cadence of Hyrule in the conversation is about as relevant as fitting Super Smash Bros in the conversation. Its not.
I've always loved the Hyrule Warrior design the most. His longer hair gives him a "lion King" fiercety and giving him dual greatswords makes him more badass than he already was.
@@jonieljoestarzawarudo8172 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 Besides the lines are vague enough (In both languages, don’t even fucking try) so that fans can and have interpreted it in a number of ways. Many think that even MORE character are reincarnations of the hatred, and some believe that Ganondorf carries the very spirit of demise, due to their similar character designs. There is a lot of flexibility in a curse described with flowery language for ten seconds.
You were actually right as a kid. Even now Wind Waker Ganondorf is the same Ganondorf as Ocarina of Time just much much much older still look quite dapper for being well over 100 years old at this point.
For a guy who keeps coming back without reincarnating, I think it's safe to say he might be immortal due to the Triforce of power and doesn't age. His look in WW might just be because every Zelda game interprets him and his design in a different way. TP Ganondorf doesn't look quite as young as Oot Ganondorf, and his execution seen in TP was supposed to be shortly after the events of Oot during the child timeline, when Link went back to the past to rat on Ganondorf then fuck off to Termina. Unless it took years to capture Ganondorf for his execution in the child timeline, it's not really explained. But Ganondorf 7 years into the future still looked younger than TP Ganondorf.
Just gonna try and explain what Hyrule Hystoria meant: at the end of OoT Link defeats Ganondorf, seals him in whatever it was and the goes back in time to when he was a kid. This created 2 timelines, the original one, where Ganondorf is imprisoned, has no Link since he went back, and then Ganon breaks free but there is no hero to defeat him, thus creating WW. The other timeline is the one Link got back to as a child, where MM and TP take place, here Ganondorf is defeated BEFORE he takes over in Ocarina, so the scene in TP with the sages is not a followup to the end of Ocarina. Hope this helped, but i may be mistaken, needlessly convoluted? Yes. Makes sense? I guess.
No, this part makes perfect sense to me and most fans. It's not that convoluted, especially sine we SEE the two timelines in the final cutscene of Oot. However, how Link to the Past fits into this is when the timeline just completely breaks down. Why did Nintendo make two sequels to Oot, which was meant to be an A Link to the Past prequel? I have no idea.
@@beyondthecamera333 Ocarina of Time's end can't connect to ALTTP : Ganondorf is sealed with only one fragment of the Triforce, plus the lore written by Koizumi for Zelda 3 is extremely different of what happen in OoT (for example, in Zelda 3 the seven sages were all Hylians).
My favorite thing about the TotK Ganondorf design is something not mentioned here, that being his mummy form. While his gerudo form looks like a king and demonking looks like an embodiment of power mummy ganon just screams evil. He just looks so unrelenting and terrifying, which fits him well considering he waited thousands of years to return and this form of him ambushes you throughout the game in the form of phantom ganon. The music he has is also amazing, especially all the phases of the final fight.
To explain what Hyrule Historia was saying with both WW and TP Gannondorfs being "The Same person". Remember when Zelda sent Link back to the past at the end of OOT (So he could tattle on past-Gannondorf and get him into the execution scenario we saw in Twilight Princess)? The timeline 7 years in the future from Link's Childhood (the one where Gannondorf did get into the Sacred Realm and took over Hyrule) continued to exist afterwards due to the paradox of Link needing to experience that future to tell the King/Past-Zelda about Gannondorf's plans. So the "Adult Timeline" where Link and Zelda sealed the Gannondorf who became King coexists with the "Child Timeline" where Link got sent back to and got Gannondorf into attempted execution/banishment. So they are the same person, just having gone through different events (One having been caught early and then given the Triforce of Power as a divine prank, being far more vengeful as he was denied his chance to rule due to Link and Zelda mocking the laws of time. The other having been defeated more conventionally and having to grow weary and older in a world that the goddesses themselves had to intervene and flood due to Link's soul not having time to reincarnate in the Adult Timeline by the time of his re-emergence) Now, the Downfall Timeline is where things get funky, Hopefully the Tears of the Kingdom book's timeline addresses it, especially with Echoes of Wisdom seemingly Kitbashing the Downfall timeline with BOTW/TOTK elements. But at the current moment it's the timeline where link dies during OOT and due to the lack of hero, the world eventually mounts a war with Gannondorf and imprisons him in the Sacred Realm, however Gannondorf having the full Triforce rendering him far more powerful (and permanently in his "Ganon" form),
As a Ganondorf enthusiast my answer to this question is a resounding "yes". No seriously, I'm so chuffed to bits thar you followed up the Ganon vid with his human half. Worth the wait!
Link fucking off in the Wind Waker backstory is just how those people interpeted whst happened at the end of Ocarina of Time. Link didn't leave he was sent back in time by Zelda, just nobody but her knew that and because she sent him away, he and his bloodline weren't there when Ganon eventually broke out of his seal. There sre a lot of questionable things about the timeline, mainly to do with the massive geological shifting between games, but the Wind Waker / Twilight Princess split is actually pretty clear.
To clarify, Zelda sending Link back in time is what caused the split timeline. Wind Waker happened because Zelda sending Link back means that timeline no longer had a Link to defend them from Ganon until the events of Wind Waker.
Wind Waker doesn't claim that. It just shows link riding off on his horse. To me as a kid that was him headed to Termina. What you say is correct based on the Historia but none of that lore was ever apparent to me before the book came out!
@@ArtistMarkFlynnThe confusions understandable, but even before the Historia came out most Zelda fans assumed Twilight Princess was in the child timeline based on what happened to Ganondorf in that game whereas Wind Waker just mentions Link disappearing. The big wrench thrown was the third timeline where the og Zelda games happened because OoT Link failed to defeat Ganon. That just reeked of confusion and desperation, lol.
We're speaking amongst two threads now 😂. Honestly I think Nintendo took inspiration from theory crafters in order to build the timeline, if you weren't speculating about this stuff (me and my pals definitely weren't) you wouldn't have even considered this order I reckon.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Even before Wind Waker's release, Aonuma confirmed that Wind Waker took place in the adult side of the OOT ending. I can understand that it's really not obvious from only in-game materials, but they always thought about this. Link riding off on a horse was an artistic interpretation of the citizens explaining where the hero went on the tapestry since no one but Zelda would know what happened.
@@SoIstice Do you know where I could read that? I'm invested now lol. Did they actually claim the horse thing was an artistic interpretation? All of what you say definitely makes sense, however childhood me never grasped it, always saw the intro quite literally.. And while the game does refer to the Hero of Time, I've always considered both Young Link and Adult Link to be the Hero of time.
To this day, i'd still say that Ganondorf is the most powerful and dangerous of all of Nintendo's villain's, a cruel, ruthless, megalomaniacal warlock and an expert at deceiving anyone to use them as puppet's to further his goal for usurping the Hyrulian royal family and gain ultimate power. It's no wonder why the Gerudo have since no longer saw him as their king and instead for the monster he truly is. and personally i really like all his design's as they just really fit him so it's hard for me to pick a favorite among them
@@madnessarcade7447 okay, but im mainly referring to villain's to compare which would be Bowser, King Dedede, King K. Rool, Ridley, King Boo, Hades, Porky, villains like that and frankly the one villain that comes close or is on par with Ganon's cruelty is Ridley as that vicious Space Pirate relishes in slaughtering anyone
also mark, link left in the adult timeline because he literally went back in time.. there is no link left there, the depicition of him riding off isnt literal. he went back in time leaving the adult timeline without a hero. like this doesnt seem that complicated
My favorite is the Twilight Princess version, in terms of designs, as if he was the Ocarina version, who was now ready for another battle in that dark, scary-looking black and gold armor. His impaled chest does make sense as it seems he was executed, then his triforce saved him from death, and now wants his vengeance as he uses the glowing sword that impaled him to get it. Just like you said, Mark, this design makes him the master of evil, evil, bad man, SPOOKY, SPOOKY *EVIL!*
The hero shade was alwasy impiled to have been the Hero of Time well before Hyrule Hystoria came out as TP as a lot of references to OoT. Hell the same Skull Kid from Oot and MM shows up in TP
Why would the game need to confirm that, when the games mostly have been operating on implications since. There are undoubtable clues, to him being left handed like the old link, to him teaching you every move that only the old link knew. Then later confirm said implication later. Its not like it came out of no where. Literally confirming what was always speculated is anticritical of a crackpot. You dont have to like it, but we cant act like that it isnt what it is.
@@reagenlionel That's fair, I guess I'll rephrase to say that, I think it is dumb, but I do accept the Historia claims it to be canon. The game never confirming it is my big bug bear as I don't think the characterisation feels anything like Link.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn I get ya. I can understand that. I don't really agree with the characterization. As the Link's up until wind waker didn't really have a character. ( When it starts being entirely different link again) That link, didn't really have much and he ( and links before him) were more like blank slates ( which links were being designed as). By that point they could make Links characterization be anything, cause he's already passed the end of his life and passing in his skills to the next incarnation. The twilight princess link for instance has quite different though similar, more defined characterization than OoC link. Whom then differs from WW link. They're all still more blank slates but they have different characterizations. I don't think the shade does or says anything that out of character for OoT link, especially since we don't really know what he became at the end of his life ( really the only Link we even get that bit of insight on in that smallest smidge at all in in thier later life or after life in this case.) The Links overall are ment to be blank slates, so most thier characterization post WW are more subtle. Especially if you compare them to thier triforce reincarnated counterparts, like ganondorf and especially Zelda. Where even the same ganondorf of two timelines kind of operate differently even though his goals are the same each time and we see how vastly each incarnation of Zelda is. Links characterization seems barely there in comparison because he's ment to be more a blank slate character.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Link never actually talks in game and we only really knew the hero of Time as child so we cant say much about his character. TP has a lot of references to OoT and is clearly based after that the fact The hero Shade in wolf form knows the same songs as you learn only in OoT and MM has a blood connection to TP Link who grew up a famer with Epona's Song impiles he is the descendant of Oot Link and Malon. The Hero shade isnt even the only returning character from OoT/MM as the same skull kid turns up who leads TP Link to the master sword
...You know, I legitimately never realized Ganondorf's design changed between the past and future segments of Ocarina of Time. You learn something new every day.
11:29 The link that left that timeline is the link in Majora's mask. He left the timeline where Ganondorf was sealed away to return to his past and get Ganondorf arrested instead.
For me, Ganondorf who had the: Best Characterization: Wind Waker Best Nostalgia: Ocarina of Time Best Design: Twilight Princess Best Daddy: Tears of the Kingdom
Only ganon design you're missing is the alternative take on calamity ganon in age of calamity. That guy almost mirrors totk ganondorf in his demons form, yet is mentally an unstable beast. Especially with the way he attacks and morphs into his scourge of the divine beasts.
Maaaaan, I remember commenting on the Ganon video when that first came out, saying I couldn't wait to get this one when Totk came out. So glad the design didn't disappoint, and glad you agree it's peak! Keep on being awesome, Mark!
in my opinion, 1 OoT 2 TP 3 WW 4 TotK (don't know why he had to be Japanese looking though? I mean gerudo is influenced by the Middle East and I think that would have been a cooler approach) 5 Smash/HW
06:20 Mark, your kid self was right. Wind Waker Ganondorf is the same Ganondorf from Ocarina in Time. In fact, most of the Ganon/Ganondorf's in the series are the exact same guy, just at different points in time.
The same guy but with inconsistencies. Wind Waker and Majora's mask have officially been placed in diff timelines therefore the intro to wind waker logistically cannot be talking about link heading to termina!
@@ArtistMarkFlynnOutside of the pic of Link riding a horse, the intro to Wind Waker never implied that Link went to terminal. The people of Hyrule never learned Zelda sent Link back in time in the adult timeline, so they just assumed he left them.
If that's what the Historia is going with that is of course canon, but the game doesn't actually specify that. Simply says the hero left and ganon re-emerged. Also lots of inconsistencies showing young link fighting ganon etc. You are factually right here, you are using the official timeline which is Nintendo's word. But to me it all feels like a retcon that the games never specified which is basically the reasons for my banter about it. I don't think an official timeline can ever truly make sense or exist!
@@ArtistMarkFlynn The reason Ocarina of Time Link didn't show up in the backstory of Wind Waker is because Zelda sent him to a different the child timeline, which is why he was nowhere to be seen in the adult timeline.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Well, I will admit that there are definetely some issues with the official Zelda timeline, Wind Waker was always meant to take place after Ocarina of Time. The backstory of Wind Waker explicitly refers to the Link who originally defeated Ganondorf as "The Hero of Time", which is the oficial title that OoT Link goes by. If Majora's Mask and Wind Waker took place in the same timeline, then OoT Link would not be remembered as a hero in WW, he'd just be "that one child who warned the King of Hyrule about Ganondorf's imminent betrayal".
Link is missing in Wind Waker because he was sent back to the past, leading to Majora's Mask. The timeline he was sent back from (the "future") continued on without him, resulting in there being no hero when Ganondorf was released. This is stated in-game, even without the Historia...
@@ArtistMarkFlynn The opening mentions that Ganondorf took the Triforce (One day a man of great evil found the golden power and took it for himself...), which did not happen in the past timeline that leads to Majora's Mask, since Link had him arrested before he could get to the Sacred Realm. He only claimed it in the future, after which his defeat, Link was sent back in time by Zelda, causing there to be no hero, meaning it has to be in that future timeline. Interviews and the Historia confirm this, but it seems evident from just the prologue alone (it mentions Link as the Hero of Time, even though in the "present", most would not even know Link existed since he cut his own quest short).
I don't think the artstyle in TWWHD had issues - but the KEY ART for the game did. The key art for Ganondorf in the NGC version has parchment lines and a bushy beard. But in game it was much more cell-shaded and less line-y. The Wii U version preserves the in-game look but not the key art look. This is in contrast to Ocarina of Time 3D / Majora's Mask 3D where they updated the in-game character models to line up with the key art released for the game. I much prefer this effort but the motivation behind TWWHD was mostly to test Wii U Gamepad functionality for Breath of the Wild. I'd also have to protest that Smash for 3DS and Smash for Wii U allowed you to have TP Ganondorf use the Sword of Sages to fight with. But it was a customization option, not a built-in one like Smash Ultimate has OT Ganondorf using the Space World 2000 Sword. I've always loved the Oracles design of Ganondorf, and it's how I imagine him having looked like if they showed him in Four Swords Adventures or A Link to the Past (both games referenced him). The 8-Bit Ganondorf from Super Mario Maker looks more like Hyrule Warriors Ganondorf than any other version, to me. I love how in Tears of the Kingdom, Ganondorf looks like he could be in Samurai Warriors, as opposed to Hyrule Warriors' Dynasty Warriors inspirationo. Now we just need a Warriors Orochi Ganondorf XD
Love your character design videos, man, some of my favorite vids on UA-cam! Character design is one of my favorites things and I love seeing the evolution of characters through the years. Would love to see a video on Donkey Kong sometime. 👀
My main problem with TotK Dorf is that all the cool stuff with him happened a billion years ago, so Link has no real connection or knowledge of the guy, and vice versa. I wish he was more present in the current story. That and I got the flashbacks completely out of order so the story was borked from the start.
I'm meaning to go back to twilight princess to play it again after much time has passed, but my main memory is really disliking the NPCs and supporting cast outside of Midna. 😞
There's also what may be the first Ganondorf design from the Link to the Past comic in Nintendo Power in 1992, years before Ocarina of Time came along. He looks somewhat like a stock "Arabian Knights" type villain who'd fit in with the cast of Disney's Aladdin, with a vest worn over a bare chest, baggy pants, a bushy beard, and a large scimitar in one hand. Obviously, it's very different from what would come later in the series. But it is interesting how aspects of this Ganondorf version that weren't present in Ganon's design (a sword, a beard, an Arabian vibe, and even a black horse) would be echoed in the games themselves.
First person I have EVER heard bring up Nintendo magazine and I love it! The nostalgia! And yes I had that poster up in my room alongside a Mario galaxy 2 one that had skyward sword on the back, also from Nintendo magazine.
there really have been some gorgeous designs.. The only thing that bugs me is when people try to draw him freakin emerald green.. like no, he's got a sallow brown skin tone, there's just crazy lighting in a lot of the games. I was particularly happy with what Musou did.
No one talks about why TP Zelda is the only Zelda with brown hair I feel like we need more Zeldas with diverse hair colors they don’t always have to be blonde
I'd like to point that Sonic games generally happened one after the other, Adventure happens after CD, Heroes happens after SA2. The timeline is pretty much 1 game that directly follows the game that came before it.
I didn't claim they are out of order, just that the idea that they are all linked is somewhat insane given the sheer difference in settings and way the characters have changed.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Oh, yeah I can feel that. Humans just came completely out of nowhere and cities properly just started existing. So that's very understandable.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Definitely. I really don't feel like humans needed to exist. But I guess they wanted them there for the stories they wanted to tell. I was against them till the movies made me actually like them.
Hey, brother! Slight correction at 11:15. Link goes back to the child timeline and gets Ganondorf executed. But what happens to the timeline he LEFT (The Adult Timeline?) That's the timeline in which Link "left" and Ganon unbreaks his seal. At the end of Ocarina, 2 timelines are created; the one Link saves in the future (leading to Wind Waker) and the one Link saves in his childhood (leading to Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess). So, in short: Link seals Ganon - Link goes back in time and so 2 timelines are made Ganon unseals himself in the timeline he left Ganon is executed and chosen by Power in the timeline he went to
Ive always liked his Wind Waker design. I thought he would be stong similar to how Iroh from Avatar ends up being this buff brute hidden by cloaks. But man... I was a thristy thristy man for TotK Ganondord. My favorite design by far.
The video was really enjoyable. Moreover, I wanted to state how fantastic the new video format is. Really enjoyed seeing you more often on the screen, and love especially the humour. It made the video really engaging and enjoyable. Your accent amuses me. We’re both UK people, but some pronunciations, like how you say “ocarina” make it seem at times you’re from Botswana. Been subscribed and have watched your videos for years and years, but this is by far my most favourite one - not because of the character design analysis (which is as comprehensive as it always is) but for the new style you’re using and presenting. And yes. Wind Waker HD looks absolutely _atrocious._ They completely removed the charming paper texture out of everything, making it look soulless.
I like to think that the Ganondorf of Wind Waker is one that managed to break free of the cycle with the absence of the Hero’s Spirit, at least enough to realize how pointless the whole thing was. He still goes through with it, but he definitely seems to be looking back and asking “…why?”
I know that the whole trifecta through the histories is the point of the series at this point, but in breaking down the appearance of a character in such granular ways, I start wonder what it might have been like if Zelda games had had different villains from title to title, that the King of Thieves, the Demon King, The Prisoner of the Sages etc had all been different people, same goals but different methods etc. I'm not going anywhere with this, just a thought I had when watching. Either way, cool stuff!
Honestly the bit with Vaati is a gag, but I absolutely loved him as a villain. There's been some good and some bad experimenting without Ganondorf present but it's hard to truly imagine the series without him.
Talking as a Zelda fan since the original Link’s Awakening the timeline is kinda cheeks, even if I do understand it. Luckily Nintendo has disregarded it for BotW and TotK. Hopefully this time they can make it work better.
Watch the end of OoT again. Adult Zelda sent him back in time to relive his childhood (she sent him to before she met him but after the The Great Deku Tree's death, this is evident by the lack of the Goron's bracelet on his wrist. Link warns Zelda about Ganondorf's and with the proof of the triforce of courage, his words led to ganondorf beings arrested and later sealed as shown in a flashback in TP. MM was a direct sequel to that ending where Link goes to look for Navi who fled in the Temple of Time when Link returned to the past. Meanwhile the adult timeline still exists because Link closed the door of time when he was sent back, thus disconnecting the link between the future and the past. Also resulting in Link not being around when Ganondorf returned generations/centuries later. Granted with SS lore involved, there should've been a completely different hero to fight against him when he returned anyway if we go by SS lore.
As this video gains traction, I’ve noticed a few recurring comments and questions. Let’s address some of them right here: Hyrule Historia Comments: Throughout the video, I make some jokes about the Hyrule Historia. It’s just banter and a running gag. If this humour doesn’t resonate with you, that’s perfectly fine. I personally REALLY ENJOYED doing the goofy face-to-cam stuff for this video and I'm gonna keep it up. The book will be OK with me trashing it. Zelda Timeline: Yes, I understand the Zelda timeline, have read Hyrule Historia's depiction of it, this is the official 'canon'. However I personally, just find it to be a loosely tied bunch of stories. Twilight Princess clearly shows its place on the timeline, but this wasn't established when Wind Waker first emerged. Majora’s Mask was the last game released before it, so my reading of the intro was always that it depicted Link heading off on his horse to Termina. However, I'm likely missing a bunch of stuff from Wind Waker that I haven't remembered since these are based on my memories from about 12 years ago. I appreciate those of you chatting with me about this! While I agree I'm probably missing some details, I also think the game itself is quite unclear. I don’t agree that Wind Waker is very explicit about the Hero of Time being sent back, and it's never suggested in-game that the intro cutscene is folklore. That's probably a better reading of the scene, but it's always felt like the Historia made this up after the fact. Hero’s Shade: I know the Hero’s Shade is considered 'canon' according to the Historia, but I still think it’s a bit silly. That said, I’m open to the idea that I might be a bit silly too. Much love. ♥
I think the folklore implication in WW is from the fact it mention the Hero of Time is a legend passed down as well as the pictures and hylian text having parrellels to real life folklore past down from civilizations past. It also implies that there were generations between the initial defeat of ganon and when people hoped that link would reappear. I think its just vague enough that I could see people interpreting it as Termina however, WW ganondorf explicitly mentions once again gathering those with the three pieces of the triforce, something he failed to do in the Child Timeline iirc. While I feel the Zelda Team usually doesn't care for the exact details, in many of the games pre BoTW there are clear links (no pun intended) in game to other games in the franchise. Edit: Thematically, I feel like it also makes sense where they through them. WW ganon managed to reach the some of the heights that he desired and could lament on his failures whereas TP ganon failed before he had a chance to even reach the starting line in a way that would leave many indignant.
@ArtsitMarkFlynn saying that ganondorf in oot and ganondorf in tp can’t possibly be the same person is like saying your grandpa when he was 20 and your grandpa now can’t possibly be the same person, people can wear different clothes and can age.
Of course they can. It's just jarring saying it's a direct sequel and having the sages represented in completely different ways and having him look different doesn't help either.
When Zelda sent Link back in time at the end of Ocarina of Time. She kept on living as well as everyone else in that future, without Link. Now Link is back to before he even met Zelda and is continuing from there. Two timelines.
Honestly all are good but I'd say WW has the best IMO idk just the way the character was presented along with how the artstyle made him look impressive. Close second would be HW just due to how Koei managed to make him basically what smash couldn't, a warlock that can cave a hopeless hero's face in.
Just like you, to me, TotK is like the perfect mixture of all other designs and is just purely awesome, it's just sad that he has less characterization than Sheev Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. I loved his personality and nuance in Wind Waker and his backstory in OoT best.
I guess Totk Dorf is pretty well designed. I would say the HW one is the best though. Yea it is derivative as you said, but so are all the HW character designs. The fact the he draws inspiration from all of the previous designs was a good move imo, just as it was overall for every HW character that didn’t reuse their “original” design from whatever game they came from. Him wearing the golden gauntlets (which you find in his castle in OOT) was also a nice nod to the game he originated in.
Is wind waker ganondorf not the same one as in ocarina of time? I always thought he was? The gerudo don't even exist in wind waker so how could a new one have been born
He's the same guy but from a diff timeline (which is the thing I dislike). The timeline splits into three so technically there are 3 different Ganondorfs/Ganons experiencing different links and Zelda's. Wind Wakers intro to me always seemed like it is alluding to the events of Majora's Mask being the reason for Ganondorf re-emerging. But wind waker is actually following the adult link timeline according to the historia.
He is not from a different timeline. You keep saying that, but no. That is his native timeline. Hes from the timeline adult link dissapeared. Adult link dissappeared because he went back in time to live as a kid, leaving that timeline without a link. It really aint that complicated as you make it seem.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn only after the immediate split of the timeline are they same. The ones there after are reincarnation. ( The third timeline makes it kind of murky after that, cause those legit feel like that was thrown in to try and include the old og Zelda games.)
While there are many things in the Hyrule Historia that do not make sense and were clearly just Nintendo pulling stuff out of their arse in an effort to fit everything in there somewhere or another... The connection between OoT, WW, and TP isn't one of them. In fact I'm pretty sure a lot of it was already known and generally accepted before that book even came out.
It does my heart good to see you back to your old tricks, bruv. I've watched and rewatched the shat out of all your character design vids. I can't believe punk ass youtube didn't recommend me these when they came out but I have you on notify all now so I'll be first to slop from here on. I see you're infusing more of your mad bastard humor in the series, which I enjoy. Keep rebuking the blasphemy that is the Wind Waker HD and do you think you'll look at MGS character designs soon? that series has a lot to offer with regards to art design, lore, humor, etc. and It could be good for views with MGS Delta: Snake Eater and the Master Collection shedding a fair bit of limelight on the series, rn. Would you consider a collab with Cybershell at some point? You're probably my two favorite sonic lore beards. I await your analyses...
I like all of them as ganondorf is my favourite villain. I like oot design the best just because in the art work for the game he just looks imposing as fuck. Next i would say twilight princess design as he looks like genuine royalty and still incredibly imposing. Next i would say wind waker as he again looks like legit royalty , like a king on vacation. When he uses the two swords it's even cooler. Last is totk. I still love the design and how giant and scary he is but the no shirt no shoes look makes him look like he isn't a king. Just a guy who is running a gang of thieves or something like that.
I like how a lot of blame is put on Hyrule Historia for things that were already pretty apparent from the in-game lore. Twilight Princess Ganondorf being the same as Ocarina of Time's was known _long_ before that. I hate Hyrule Historia, but this is all stuff pretty clearly set up in the games themselves lol. And yeah the Hero's Shade is absolutely Ocarina of Time Link. Anyway, my favorite design has gotta be Wind Waker's. I love how imposing he is despite being so much goofier looking.
@ArtistMarkFlynn Fair enough lol. I would like to correct myself though-- we don't know if it's Ocarina of Time Link specifically. We just know it has to be _a_ hero. His scabbard is specifically the Master Sword's, so we know he wielded the Master Sword in the past. I doubt it's Skyward Sword Link (and he didn't even exist at the time of Twilight Princess's release). So it's either the Hero of Time, or some unknown hero of the past we've never seen in any of the games. Or if you still don't like that, you can pretend that the scabbard doesn't mean anything. Although I'm sure a detail like that was considered by the designers.
I have to set nostalgia aside and admit Tears has the best Ganondorf design, normal and demon mode. But I was not fond of his portrayal and the fact that he was a reincarnated Ganondorf. because it feels like there's no history with this particular reincarnation, and I know that's just a matter of preference. With the first teaser reveal, I thought they were setting him up as an ancient evil from an era of Hyrule that was long forgotten due to time, an era we were more familiar with. He would be the one connection to past games. But botw and tears are set so far into the future that Rauru supposedly founded the land of Hyrule again, separate from the kingdom of Hyrule from past games, and this Ganondorf was born in this new Hyrule. He obtained power, he briefly wrecked havoc on Hyrule before Rauru froze him in time and turned him into a mummy. Then when he finally awakens and his body is revitalized, Link kills him 15 minutes later. But I guess this is equally as much of a rant about the botw era rather than just about Ganondorf, because I feel like it was a lazy excuse to ignore everything about previous Zelda games. But again, just a preference.
I think the reason Twilight Princess Ganondorf appears to much is that it's clearly the best. The menacing staredown as he walks to crush his opponents. Ocarina is a close second and that promo poster is a lot of why. He's moreso a mage while fighting in human form in that game though. Haven't played Tears of The Kingdom but I kinda don't like Ganondorf's design. I was really intrigued my the mummified Ganondorf in the trailers but they don't share much resemblance or themes. Also I found BotW's story (of what little there was) to feel a little anime trope heavy, and from what I can gather TotK is more of that. Including Samurai design. Like it's kinda cool but not what I hope for out of a LoZ game. I really like Wind Waker's story, and I think Ganondorf's design is fine but I think it's almost lackluster in comparison to the rest of Wind Waker. There's so much in all of the rest of Wind Waker that he's almost too plain in my eyes.
I don't think that's the reason! There was just such a long wait between Twilight Princess and Tears of the Kingdom that he had to be used over and over again for Smash Brothers lol. They thought they were being 'current' by using him in Brawl instead of Wind Waker but it ended up being his final canon appearance for years and years.
I think demon king Ganondorf is him using Demise's power to show that he surpassed Demise and Demise's power is his servant to Ganondorf's will rather than Ganondorf being a servant to Demise's will
odd cause isn't Ganon supposed to be the reincarnation of the demon king Demise's hatred, and thus always fated to do battle with Link and Zelda in his endless conquest for power and to plunge Hyrule into darkness
Hi 👋🏻 I used to be a heavy collaborator in the Zelda fan community, I ran a Ganondorf fan comic for a few years that got surprisingly popular, so I have some insights from my particular experience in that space Preface with saying that I love Ganondorf and think he’s an interesting character… BUT… There is a lot of cultural baggage with Ganondorf and the Gerudo as a whole. They aren’t depicted in the most sensitive way, being a hodgepodge of pretty ugly orientalist stereotypes, and while more recent games have attempted to make them distinct from any real-life people groups, there’s still a ways to go (why are they wearing *that* in the desert, etc) There’s some old concept art of OOT Ganondorf shown in the HH that is very uncomfortable to look at in today’s world, very glad they veered away from that one In particular though a lot of folks, myself included, take umbrage with how Ganondorf’s skin ends up greener and greener in every subsequent game, when his original complexion was, yes, olive, but not nearly as drastic. It’s a frustrating trend, especially in totk where he’s ostensibly still a Gerudo in flashbacks, powerful yes, but not distinct enough to make him *green* like some sort of orc I could see his color changing if it were a gradual display of “power corrupts” or that sort of thing, but unless every Gerudo male is just born green, it’s… weird and suspect to a lotta folks But hey,,,, at least he’s not a white man jumpscare like in a one-shot unofficial/official ALTTP comic that’s out there lol
Thanks for the heads up, I adlibbed a lot of the script as I wanted to face the camera so definitely have gone away from the base of it slightly! I'll see what I can do
Small resentment, not directly on uploader but more on the term of 'honour'. The ubiquitous loan words of Japan confuse most even to this day. Honour as a substitute for Loyalty, Fidelity, and Military code is honestly poor interpretation. There are videos to clarify 'Bushido' being more analogous with 'Chivalry' two sets of military codes of conduct. With Ganondorf, it makes sense to interpret his faux allegiance as the Trojan Horse, that is fair. He is the antithesis of these nouns. I am stating that 'honour' as a verb for samurai does exist but that there are more fitting terms in this instance since honour in the West's perspective is more on 'status' than a code of conduct. Status being 'renown' and honour is that renown. So essentially the famous OOT Ganondorf kneeling scene is his loyalty (and obvious infidelity). Comparatively, the samurai iteration is doing the same manner. So, when stating "...to turn on his allies at any moment". That is literally loyalty being tarnished. Again, nothing towards anyone using the term honour when giving Japanese analogies. It is something that localizers have used too frequently which has been nothing more a blanket description.
Your random hated for the hyrule historia made me dislike this video. I can't help to literally 100% disagree with you. It clearly seem you didn't understand what happen with oot link at the 11 min mark.
Hi Folks,
I started this video over 6 months ago, recording everything back in November.
Mark
My condolences man. Glad to have you back.
My deepest condolences, Bub. Glad to see you back!🫂👍
Good to have you back even if it’s sad you have my condolences as well.
I'm very sorry to hear that, but I'm glad you're back on here. Please take your time & take care of yourself above all else
That is unfortunate, but I am happy to see you are handling it well
Hyrule Historia implies that Wind Waker takes place during the adult timeline after Link has been sent back to his child days.
@@Marandahir Cadence of Hyrule? You can't count the noncanon games.

Besides the lines are vague enough (In both languages, don’t even fucking try) so that fans can and have interpreted it in a number of ways.
Bro is damn near 1000 years old by the time of Wind Waker.
@@firionkaiser8291 he was basically sealed for most of that time, frozen in time.
@@clementrenaud4260 Reread my comment. I specifically said that a Link to the Past is the game that DOESN'T fit the timeline. We're in agreement here
My favorite thing about the TotK Ganondorf design is something not mentioned here, that being his mummy form.
The other having been defeated more conventionally and having to grow weary and older in a world that the goddesses themselves had to intervene and flood due to Link's soul not having time to reincarnate in the Adult Timeline by the time of his re-emergence)
Now, the Downfall Timeline is where things get funky, Hopefully the Tears of the Kingdom book's timeline addresses it, especially with Echoes of Wisdom seemingly Kitbashing the Downfall timeline with BOTW/TOTK elements. But at the current moment it's the timeline where link dies during OOT and due to the lack of hero, the world eventually mounts a war with Gannondorf and imprisons him in the Sacred Realm, however Gannondorf having the full Triforce rendering him far more powerful (and permanently in his "Ganon" form),
yeah the downfall timeline is the only really questionable timeline with how its setup
The default Hyrule Warriors design almost is like a mix of Twilight Princess Ganondorf and Demise
It's no wonder why the Gerudo have since no longer saw him as their king and instead for the monster he truly is.
and personally i really like all his design's as they just really fit him so it's hard for me to pick a favorite among them
I think giratina or eternatus could give him a run for his money
I think mewtwo could beat him
@@madnessarcade7447 okay, but im mainly referring to villain's to compare which would be Bowser, King Dedede, King K. Rool, Ridley, King Boo, Hades, Porky, villains like that
and frankly the one villain that comes close or is on par with Ganon's cruelty is Ridley as that vicious Space Pirate relishes in slaughtering anyone
also mark, link left in the adult timeline because he literally went back in time.. there is no link left there, the depicition of him riding off isnt literal. he went back in time leaving the adult timeline without a hero. like this doesnt seem that complicated
Hell the same Skull Kid from Oot and MM shows up in TP
im sorry but the shade from twilight princess, canonically is the ocarina of time link. like its not a crackpot theory thats canon lmao
It's crackpot that the game doesn't confirm it at all and a book that released years and years later claims it.
( When it starts being entirely different link again)
That link, didn't really have much and he ( and links before him) were more like blank slates ( which links were being designed as).
I don't think the shade does or says anything that out of character for OoT link, especially since we don't really know what he became at the end of his life ( really the only Link we even get that bit of insight on in that smallest smidge at all in in thier later life or after life in this case.)
The Links overall are ment to be blank slates, so most thier characterization post WW are more subtle.
It's quite subtle and I didn't even notice until I started researching this video!
I love his 7 year dreads/braids? Idk but they stick around on his Ganon form
11:29 The link that left that timeline is the link in Majora's mask. He left the timeline where Ganondorf was sealed away to return to his past and get Ganondorf arrested instead.
For me, Ganondorf who had the:
Best Characterization: Wind Waker
Best Nostalgia: Ocarina of Time
Best Design: Twilight Princess
Best Daddy: Tears of the Kingdom
Only ganon design you're missing is the alternative take on calamity ganon in age of calamity. That guy almost mirrors totk ganondorf in his demons form, yet is mentally an unstable beast. Especially with the way he attacks and morphs into his scourge of the divine beasts.
I need to check this out. Had no idea!
Maaaaan, I remember commenting on the Ganon video when that first came out, saying I couldn't wait to get this one when Totk came out. So glad the design didn't disappoint, and glad you agree it's peak! Keep on being awesome, Mark!
in my opinion,
1 OoT
2 TP
3 WW
4 TotK (don't know why he had to be Japanese looking though? I mean gerudo is influenced by the Middle East and I think that would have been a cooler approach)
5 Smash/HW
11:30 Link isn’t there to stop Ganondorf before Windwaker because he was sent back in time
Link is missing in Wind Waker because he was sent back to the past, leading to Majora's Mask. The timeline he was sent back from (the "future") continued on without him, resulting in there being no hero when Ganondorf was released. This is stated in-game, even without the Historia...
Genuine question, when is this stated? All of my memories relate to the opening where it simply says Link left and Ganon emerged.
My fave Ganondorf look is still Hyrule Warriors.
Holy shit I was JUST watching the Tifa video wondering where you’d gone!
HW Ganondorf and TOTK Ganondorf are by far my favorite designs for this iconic Nintendo villain.
Love your character design videos, man, some of my favorite vids on UA-cam! Character design is one of my favorites things and I love seeing the evolution of characters through the years.
Would love to see a video on Donkey Kong sometime. 👀
Glad you like them! DK is a great shout.
From what I know ganondorf is always brought back with his past memories
If I fell to my knees and begged would you do Zelda next
Yeah do it
@@ArtistMarkFlynnI can't post a picture but on it boss 🫡🫡
😂
My main problem with TotK Dorf is that all the cool stuff with him happened a billion years ago, so Link has no real connection or knowledge of the guy, and vice versa. I wish he was more present in the current story. That and I got the flashbacks completely out of order so the story was borked from the start.
I really hate that they gave you the cutscenes out of order. They should've just had you unlock them chronologically regardless of where you went!
Whenever I see Twilight Princess, I just see a team that played Ico and did what everyone who played Ico does. Make a good game with Ico flair
Oh boy, I love the breakdown of this video, but "ORCarina" hurts my brain.
*inserts the lord of the rings, meat is back on the menu boys scene*
No one talks about why TP Zelda is the only Zelda with brown hair
I feel like we need more Zeldas with diverse hair colors they don’t always have to be blonde
Zelda with dreads is next.
It feels like they went from a unique planet, to earth, to both lol
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Definitely.
I really don't feel like humans needed to exist.
But I guess they wanted them there for the stories they wanted to tell.
I was against them till the movies made me actually like them.
Hey, brother! Slight correction at 11:15.
Link goes back to the child timeline and gets Ganondorf executed. But what happens to the timeline he LEFT (The Adult Timeline?)
That's the timeline in which Link "left" and Ganon unbreaks his seal. At the end of Ocarina, 2 timelines are created; the one Link saves in the future (leading to Wind Waker) and the one Link saves in his childhood (leading to Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess).
So, in short:
Link seals Ganon - Link goes back in time and so 2 timelines are made
Ganon unseals himself in the timeline he left
Ganon is executed and chosen by Power in the timeline he went to
Ive always liked his Wind Waker design. I thought he would be stong similar to how Iroh from Avatar ends up being this buff brute hidden by cloaks.
But man... I was a thristy thristy man for TotK Ganondord. My favorite design by far.
16:16 that freaking smile get me all the time 😂😂😂😂😂
The video was really enjoyable.
16:28 a battle with this guy would have been amazing, just jump to either side of him and he can’t see you over that ambitious collar
I like to think that the Ganondorf of Wind Waker is one that managed to break free of the cycle with the absence of the Hero’s Spirit, at least enough to realize how pointless the whole thing was. He still goes through with it, but he definitely seems to be looking back and asking “…why?”
green screen fire background is my favorite character design
13:40 The games' names are "Smash fo(u)r 3DS/WiiU"
correct, twas a goof!
The best one is obviously dehydrated ganon
Love the character design analysis. Cool it with the "the timeline doesn't make sense cause I don't understand it" bs though
Let’s address some of them right here:
Hyrule Historia Comments: Throughout the video, I make some jokes about the Hyrule Historia.
Corn Rows is my Goat.
It's a great design for sure, and yeah I'm a big fan of the Hyrule Warriors designs for the big 3 triforce holders in general!
You forgot Tekken Tag Tournament 2. 👊
Hope we see a Zelda design evolution pretty soon!
I actually forgot he was even on UA-cam. i thought he was a fever dream
I would have loved to see tears of the kingdom ganondorf transform into Ganon
Is wind waker ganondorf not the same one as in ocarina of time? I always thought he was? The gerudo don't even exist in wind waker so how could a new one have been born
He is. Pretty much all Ganondorfs are the same guy except Hyrule Warriors and maybe totk.
The timeline splits into 3 so there are 3 sets of Ganondorfs/Ganons, they can't all be the same man lol
@@ArtistMarkFlynn only after the immediate split of the timeline are they same. The ones there after are reincarnation. ( The third timeline makes it kind of murky after that, cause those legit feel like that was thrown in to try and include the old og Zelda games.)
11:27 Dude... do you even know how time travel works?
Um dude do you even know how time travel works, bro? My wife took my kids bro and I'm depressed bro I eat ramen every night bro, haha.
Ganondorf with long hair >>>>
While there are many things in the Hyrule Historia that do not make sense and were clearly just Nintendo pulling stuff out of their arse in an effort to fit everything in there somewhere or another... The connection between OoT, WW, and TP isn't one of them. In fact I'm pretty sure a lot of it was already known and generally accepted before that book even came out.
I hope you cover the Princesses soon, Peach, Daisy, and Zelda as they've all had major redesigns over the years
I was writing some Zelda stuff today, she's definitely coming at some point
@@ArtistMarkFlynn I look forward to it!
Easily Hyrule Warriors. Twilight Princess is a close second.
Best Donkey Kong design next.
I am surprised you didn’t mention rehydrated Ganondorf lol
I was thinking about him but we were past 20+ minutes already and his crusty ass didn't make the cut lol
Hero's Shade IS Ocarina of Time Link, canonically, but I don't have to think it makes sense or is good, I think it's neither lol.
@ArtistMarkFlynn Fair enough lol.
His OoT design. No contest.
Please make more sonic spirit videos
Can you make more concept videos please?
What do you have against the Hyrule Historia? It is the official book that shows us the official timeline of the Zelda series.
The book is good. I just think the timeline is silly.
Well timed for the new Zelda game reveal
Twilight princess is my favorite design.
5:33 he has the Luffy Gear 5 eyebrow from One Piece
Egg (Eyesbrows, that are Quite Frankly, Insane lmao)
😂
Can you make a Sequel to the sonic reboot
There's literally already a part two video on the channel lol
@@ArtistMarkFlynn make a squeakuel for it.
It’s definitely pronounced High-lian. Great video though as always
"Orc-arina"
the noble art of correcting pronunciation online, thank you my liege
Hyrule warriors was his best design!
Demise is objectively cool, sorry lol (great video btw!!)
He's just Akuma to me
Ganondorf is kinda hot
Hyrule warriors and TOTK easily

Hi 👋🏻 I used to be a heavy collaborator in the Zelda fan community, I ran a Ganondorf fan comic for a few years that got surprisingly popular, so I have some insights from my particular experience in that space
Preface with saying that I love Ganondorf and think he’s an interesting character… BUT…
There is a lot of cultural baggage with Ganondorf and the Gerudo as a whole. They aren’t depicted in the most sensitive way, being a hodgepodge of pretty ugly orientalist stereotypes, and while more recent games have attempted to make them distinct from any real-life people groups, there’s still a ways to go (why are they wearing *that* in the desert, etc)
There’s some old concept art of OOT Ganondorf shown in the HH that is very uncomfortable to look at in today’s world, very glad they veered away from that one
In particular though a lot of folks, myself included, take umbrage with how Ganondorf’s skin ends up greener and greener in every subsequent game, when his original complexion was, yes, olive, but not nearly as drastic. It’s a frustrating trend, especially in totk where he’s ostensibly still a Gerudo in flashbacks, powerful yes, but not distinct enough to make him *green* like some sort of orc
I could see his color changing if it were a gradual display of “power corrupts” or that sort of thing, but unless every Gerudo male is just born green, it’s… weird and suspect to a lotta folks
But hey,,,, at least he’s not a white man jumpscare like in a one-shot unofficial/official ALTTP comic that’s out there lol
I think they're gonna give him a keffiyeh in the next game.
Side note, you might want to fix the subtitles. They don't match what you're saying and the timing on them is very wrong
Thanks for the heads up, I adlibbed a lot of the script as I wanted to face the camera so definitely have gone away from the base of it slightly! I'll see what I can do
move villain please
Mark denying the timelines is so funny. He sounds like a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist lol
Your random hated for the hyrule historia made me dislike this video. I can't help to literally 100% disagree with you. It clearly seem you didn't understand what happen with oot link at the 11 min mark.
Ganondork doesn't have a good design. He's a big B with a little d. My buddies and I used to give him swirlies in the 3rd floor restroom in 9th grade.
