Great video man! Nice remote control too!! I'm trying to figure out what would be good for my room, as I have slanted ceilings. Gotta position the speaker in an angle to get that Top Layer working correctly. Denon is sending me an X4400H to try out Auro 3D so it's good to know I'll need an amp for that Top Layer.
Make a hanging platform with pipes or a projector mount and then screw a board onto where the "projector" would go. then use the svs mount and theit ceiling mount to lock it in place. Bada Bing

That Home Theater Dude oh I had meant on the SVS site. There’s only a few pictures of Gary having mounted them to the ceiling but no real tutorial or explanation as to how it would work on their site. I have a Klipsch RP280 system with three 115 SW and I’m looking at the gloss white or black ash. I would mount directly on my ceiling like you did with the voice of God since Atmos is supposed to be directly above your head. However, I’m not sure what benefit would be for them to face down at the ground on the ceiling in the front while facing directly at your head in the rear. I’m not sure why you even want in ceiling speakers firing directly down word in the front or middle! That is cool that you went with the ultras. I don’t think I would go with their speaker and instead would go with RF 7 II/III from how much praise it has gotten.
Check out both sets in person to see which you like more. I only wanted the VOG for auro 3d. now that I moved my system around I want to change my rears to downfiring at my couch. I'll hang those puppies upsidedown and see if i like it. If I dont then i will sway it back.
Thanks for doing this! Haven't seen anyone use these on the ceiling and that's exactly how I want to use these, for Atmos speakers x4. I can't cut holes for in ceiling and have an open floor plan so can't mount on side walls.
You have a nice flat ceiling why not use ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos. There are quiet a few options as low as $52 a pair for 8" coaxial ceiling speakers which will do as good of a job as the Elevations by SVS for Dolby Atmos. DA doesn't need higher end drivers to produce good effects. I had the Elevations and sent them back because I thought they were over kill for DA. Great speaker no doubt and if you have to go flush mount height Front to get the effects you want a good choice but really any good bookshelf angled height front mount will do the job well IMHO.
I have a room right above the living room and its a thin space. In ceiling speakers arent an option otherwise I would do that. Sorry you sent back the Svs. Im selling my klipsch atmos modules cause they just arent up to par with my setup.
I only sent them back because I was able to use ceiling speakers to accomplish my Dolby Atmos successfully for $150 vs $800.00 for 4 speakers. I imagine I would consider the SVS in your circumstance but I would still consider small Book Shelves focusing downward with a nice wide throw. This is because they are effect speakers and most detail is limited and short vs LCR detail.
What kind ceiling speakers you will install instead SVS elevation if your ceiling was bigger?

Is there a recommendation for how high you put them on the wall and how far back your seating position should be? Or does it not matter that much. For example my walls are 8-9' tall and the couch is about 12' form the wall.

jason wilkinson Atmos is pretty cool. I started out with only 2 Atmos channels way back and it sounded pretty darn good. Having 5 is just crazy haha. I might need a bigger avr if I get any more
Nice video. With the opening in your room it makes it harder for the room acoustics.
On my tv room had and opening but I built a barn door but I still gonna install curtains.
it'll work somewhat. Like you said that opening is gonna make it hard to do proper acoustic in a room like that. If it was a closed room then it'll make a world of difference. I have a basement that is unfinished, but it's a closed room and with a little bit of acoustical foam placed in different areas it made a whole lot of difference.

I am new to this. I have 2(technically 3) questions. 1) What is the reasoning or advantages for having two front left and right speakers? Won't they overpower the rest? 2) Do you have to use 4 height speakers to be able to have Dolby Atmos?
i dont have the 4 speakers hooked up at the same time. I was trying to figure out which i was going to keep so I left both in the house. No you dont need 4 speakers for atmos. you can get away with just 2. Initially the back two heights were underutilized when they were recording. Now it seems to be used a little more

Thanks. I will be installing my 4 Klipsch CDT-5800-C In-Ceiling Speakers in 2 weeks when a friend is down visiting. I'm still learning about Immersive Audio. I'm not sure yet if I will buy a separate amplifier since I have 7.2.4 and will likely have an 11.2 receiver (either Denon AVR-X6400H or Marantz 8012).
You probably dont need a seperate amp for the 11 channel AVR. mine is 9 channel with 11 preouts, so I think thats the problem

I just ordered two for a 7.1.2 system. Is it better to have them above the front speakers on top of the wall, or hanging from the ceiling just ahead of the seating position? The room is 13 feet from the seats to the front speaker wall
I've just bought a pair they were on offer and were cheaper than the Klipsch RP500-SA. According to reviews they sound better thsn the Klipsch speakers.

After you hung your "Voice of God" speaker, did you find it moves a lot on the mount? I mounted my two Prime elevation speakers from the ceiling, installed the keeper so the speaker will not 'rattle' off but I find mine are very loosely hung and move quite a bit. They do not move enough to find the holes, the keepers are doing their job I guess but it's just a bit unnerving how much they move on the hanger.
they are solid in there. i have a ton of base and walk around upstairs they have never shook themselves loose

i would set the speakers to 20hz above their lowest rated bandwidth. Do not use a subwoofer and match all speakers to 75 db at your main listening position at reference volume. You should be fine

Thanks for showing the Elevation ceiling installation. I would probably have recommended putting all four SVS Elevations in the Dolby Atmos Top Front/Top Rear positions rather than having Front and Rear Heights for the best possible overhead effect. Plus, Auro 3D doesn't have much in the way of actual content and they probably never will. Auro's single VOG speaker approach is super distracting IMHO (when it's actually encoded into the mix) as it's too point source as sounds move across the ceiling - and I've been to numerous Auro demos over the years. Plus, it's a mono overhead. Some receivers allow you to split the Auro VOG channel out of the four Atmos overhead speakers in your configuration settings.
Dan Hitchman I was thinking the same thing. Other than the up mixer and some specific music discs I haven’t seen auro take off in the US. Everyone seems to be jumping on with DA including Apple which hadn’t even had DTS in their products. Steaming is DA, most movies are DA instead of DTS:X. Since DTS can use the DA layout, I’m thinking top front/ top rear makes the most sense as that’s how the codec was engineered (cinema). Then again we got those ceiling bouncers :/ Denon didn’t help them out by making my 4200 auro upgrade $200.
Having bookshelf speakers mounted to the ceiling, depending on how high the ceiling is, might put them too close to the listener. Doing so they might make them a distraction.
I'm looking to upgrade to Dolby Atmos / AURO 3D and I have a question about the Voice of God channel. I've recently learned that the creator of AURO 3D preferred 9.1 [5.1.4] over 10.1 [5.1.5] thus not using the Voice of God channel in 9.1.
1) Have you done any comparisons with and without the Voice of God channel? What are your thoughts on it?
2) What are your room dimensions (L x W x H)?
3) Would you happen to know what's the minimum room length required to use height wide channels?

Maybe a little late, but I will get some Atmos ceiling speakers soon (5.1.2). I have Dali speakers, so I'm going to stay with them. I just don't know, should I get small stand speakers (Spektor 2 or Zensor 2) or their Alteco hight speakers... Do the hight speakers work as an Atmos ceiling speakers? Any insight on that?

Which would be better to use, normal small stand speakers (just check the ones I listed and you should know what kind of speakers) or the elevation kind of speakers. That means the kind of speakers you have in this video (again, if you check out the Alteco speaker I was writing about, it should be clear).

Just wondering, how well do your front height speakers work with Dolby Atmos with their placement. I have been looking for info on a set up that will work well with both Auro 3d and atmos and i haven’t been able to find alot of info other than a similar diagram to this setup on the Marantz website.
How do these do with Apple atmos music ?
the prime elevation speakers, when placed as front heights are they supposed to be placed directly above the front left and right towers? I see you have them much more spread a part. I've always thought all speakers should be pointed directly at the listener so since the mount only points the prime elevation straight forward the only way for them to be pointed at the listener in my situation would be if they were placed much closer together , close to the ceiling a couple feet apart above the tv.
eja35oz I always recommend that you put them in line with your front pair of speakers. If you put them super wide as in my case it would be butting up next to perpendicular walls could cloud the sound that comes out of them. Same reason that you try to avoid early reflecting points in sound. You don’t want the heights/Atmos bouncing off a wall before it gets to you.
Hi, I've tried your configuration with the DENON AVR and I've noticed that the second sub is not in the settings? does that mean only one sub will work on this config? It would be helpful if you can elaborate more please.

Hey Chris! Really enjoy your videos, bud. Just wanted to check in and see if you're still enjoying having the VOG speaker set up 5 months in. I'm finalizing my home theater surround sound set up, got the x4400h and running SVS prime elevations in a dual ATMOS/AURO config. Hearing lots of differing opinions on whether or not VOG is worth it. Lots of people saying it's nice to have when the upmix includes it, but most of the time it's not used much. Thoughts?

Hey I'm kinda new to this but I'm assuming you used the pre-outs on your denon receiver and ran the cables to your amps? How do you do that? The pre-outs on the denon receiver are the left and right (black and red connectors) but the inputs on the outlaw audio amp are xlr. Just confused on how that works. Thanks
my outlaws were monoblocks the model 2200 they have a single xlr and a single rca cable input and speaker wire outputs. easy
How much sound (immersion) does the voice of god actually add? Is it worth it or is it kinda gimmicky in the sense you only hear it occasionally?

What do you mean you watch shows like New Girl and Friends in Auro 3D... they weren't coded for that format?
they werent coded for auro 3d. Im trying to say that content thats not natively coded for auro 3d can be upmixed using the auro 3d mixer. Basically you can play any content that isnt originally auro and you will hear sound out of your upper speakers

Wouldn't these speakers mounted on the ceiling have the drivers pointed in the wrong direction?
how do you figure? You can mount them in any direction you like. You can point them towards you so that the angled face of the speaker is pointing more at your location than a true in ceiling speaker could. Plus in ceilings lack an enclosure around it. open air speaker design in my experience isnt the best. Thats why you see people jumping up in the attic to put a box around the in ceiling speakers. it really helps out.
You mention an "Auro-3D mixer". Is that a separate device, or is it built-in to the AVR?
its in the 4400 and higher models of denon. its a 100 option to upgrade if you have the 4300 or 6300. well worth it.

yes it extrapolates non native formats to play thru the auro 3d setup. I can be watching seinfeld and get sound out of the VOG. It wasnt originally coded for it obviously, but the mixer does a really good job of adding depth with the speaker
Hey, hope you're doing well! I would like to know your opinion on what is the best placement for the SVS PRIME ELEVATION speakers? Is it top front or top middle on the side walls between listening position and front speakers? My AVR is 7.2 capable.

Directly above gave me the best sound. You can get away with front and rear heights. There is nothing wrong with that. When I mounted them above I really felt immersed into the movie more

Just curious! Why do you have your atmos speakers mounted on your walls and not your ceiling like your "voice of god" speaker? Wouldn't the atmos speakers sound better ceiling mounted?
yes sir. this was before i wired fully into the ceiling. I have all 6 hanging now. Sounds great!

I must be doing something wrong as far as speaker setting I see everyone on videos have there speakers set on a negative number while I set mys on positive when I set my on low my meter reading i try to set it to 75db but if I set it on an low number I want get 75db or do it should be more?
its just a different scale. you can change it in your avr settings
Hey great video, I learned a lot from it. I'm leaving towards upgrading my reciever to the 4700 to have access to the upmixer. For the VOG, what external amp would you recommend that wouldn't be expensive but good enough for it?

I’m using the x4400 with pretty much the same setup except the ultra surrounds and the ultra center and 2 sb16s. Do you recommend the voice of god versus the Atmos setup?
you can run both. the speaker placment is the same except for the vog. You can run an atmos track and hear 4 height speakers and then pop it over to auro-3d and then you have 5 speakers playing. You dont have to change the speaker placement when you switch between the mixer modes. I really like auro-3d. its not super popular in the US but i think it is superior in many ways to atmos and dtsx
did you use the screws that came from svs to mount to the ceiling? i found a joist using a stud finder but i'm only going to get 2 of the 4 screws into it (either the front 2 or the back 2). i'm worried that it won't be enough to support the weight
If you are using the screws from the kit then dont use the plastic anchors if you are drilling into a joist or stud. If you want a little more security then get some 3 inch wood screws for joist or some dry wall anchors if you are just drilling into the sheet rock. I used the dry wall anchors that were a 2 piece kit. One drills into the ceiling and then the smaller one(almost the same size as the screws in the kit) goes into the bigger one. prettt cool and they are cheap. I used the drywall anchors rated for 50lbs. overkill but it probably wont fall down. :)

Can I put an voice of god and an pair of ceiling speakers side by side?
not really the VOG is meant to be a single speaker directly over your head not to the side of it. i have two above my head but they are spread out really far and used as middle heights

no you dont. Native auro 3d content will sound amazing but auro has an upmixer in it that can add height effect to any content. mono, stereo, and old movies. i use it all the time.

I have a denon x1400h. I was wondering if it will atleast suppport 5.2.2? Using the back surrounds to hook up the 2 atmos speakers. This should work no? I really hope so because im already extremely disappointed that I cant go 5.2.4

The 1400 supports atmos/ dts-x you should be able to assign the heights channel to your speakers
4400 is plenty and its on sale right now.
If you actually mounted your Atmos speakers on the ceiling then you wouldn't need a voice of god channel.

Not true. VOG is a specific channel thats mixed to be directly above you. In ceiling speakers are inline with your front speakers its a little different.
Droidz Hunterz Auro 3D has three layers. The Main Layer is your 5.1, then a Height Layer is your 4 Atmos speakers, then the Top Layer is the "Voice of God Channel."

No, the first companies to do mainstream height effects was Pioneer and Yamaha in the 80s - LOOOOONG before everyone was in a pissing contest over Atmos/DTSX/Auro.
SSJBen I never knew Yamaha and pioneer mixed and mastered movies like Sony, Dolby and thx. I always knew them as electronics companies that just implemented the master tracks from the major companies.

I have a pb 16 ultra the ultra towers and a pair of prime elevation I have no idea as to what I am doing wrong but when I play the demo from the tv and it’s playing

Are you mounting it through the drywall or a stud?
drywall. I use 50lb drywall anchors on 3/4 of the posts. they hold the speaker up just fine without any movement or worry of falling.

i would have got auro...but you can only use one format to work properly.

That Home Theater Dude because of the speaker placement you can only go with one format...auro 3d or dolby atmos..expert say if you try to run both you should follow the auro 3d format.
I dont agree with that. The main difference is the VOG. Other than that they are very similar. dts-x and atmos are very similar in their placments too. Try it and see what you like.
That Home Theater Dude did not say you can't do it...but ...there is a difference in speaker placement...this came from auro themselves....I'm sure you will still get a good experience...
I get you. Try it out and see if you like it. the VOG is wired in such a way that it doesnt interfere with the rest of the 9 or 11 channels. its connected to SUBwoofer 2 preout and to an external amp.
On denon can we set any input to be played in auro? If so how??? My denon has auro3d... dnt know how to play it

How did u hook it up to the receiver?
it usually recommends to hook it up to subwoofer 2 and then from sub 2 to an external amp then to your VOG. You have to configure it in the amp assign before you run audessey

Bon Scott that Rythmik FV25HP is a freaking monster!! For the same price as the Ultra but with the capacity to melt your innards and rattle your eye balls lol
VOLTIS5 couldn’t agree more brother. Rythmik has better sound quality as well. Svs is nice but there subs get outperformed by other subs for less money. Go check out power sound audio s7201. It has four 18 inch subs in a sealed enclosure 😁😁
Auro 3d up mix is just terrible compared to dsu and dts neural x. Auro 3d encoded material sounds cool. It makes no sense at all to connect second sub pre out to external Amp for vog channel... You got things mixed up... 4 ceiling speakers sound best with my Denon x4400h...
have you ever done the vog? thats what the avr says to do when you start setting it up.

No my setup is 10.1 with 4 top speakers + 6.1 (one back channel). I'm using a Yamaha hifi receiver for main channels amp (HT bypass). But I take it that I can assign the extra back channel I'm not using as VOG.
N why I can give up on one subwoofer pre out, as I have 2 SVS SB2000 subs...
You can daisy chain subs. sub out from avr to sub in on sub #1 then subout on sub #! to sub in on sub #2. Easy peasy. That way you can still use two subs and VOG
