Bull Moose Rut: The Best Hits
Moose Rut Pit You’ll be glad you checked in for this one. Although we still have some Maine moose footage to share, in anticipation of this year’s rut, it’s time to revisit a few of the best rut clips rolled into one best hits.
Of course it starts out with Grumpy! He is hands down the master of the rut pit. We’ve lost count how many pits we watched him dig. (We are so grateful for every minute spent with him). More on Grumpy in coming weeks.
At 1:13 seconds Mr T makes his appearance, this was one of our first rut pit experiences and we were at the very beginning of our video journey. As the saying goes…we all start somewhere.
At 2:29 seconds Left Hook gets in on the act. As it turned out that day turned into one of the most exciting and adventurous days of all our years of exploring. We watched Left Hook dig his pit, and a half hour later we watched thru binoculars as the old warrior 22…who was about a mile away… methodically made his way over to Left Hook’s pit party….22 crashed that party and those two bulls went into battle that day. (Video can be seen in our video section.)
At 4:10 seconds, a look back at another spectacular evening of moose fun with 22….the so called boulder shoot. We actually climbed up top of a 10-12 ft boulder and watched the show from there.
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

Good to see "Grumpy" again!! He pretty much flat out just demonstrated how it's done. That's why he was #1. With other interesting events that took place, "Mr. T", and "Swagger" nearly got into a tassel. These two crusty bulls ought to know when not to approach another's pit. It's a common trait with moose. It looks like "Left Hook" has his hoofs full. He's pretty much got the ladies all "worked up". When cows lunge onto one another, it's pretty much a circumstance of who's the "natural" to take on the mating ordeal with their respective "King". At the end during the twilight, all is said and done: the "Princess is with her "Prince".
Again, and as always, very astute Dan! Thank you for your comment! Yes, Swagger had to make a quick exit but now? as he came to the party last year? That will not be happening again. And yes, Grumpy took us by the hand and showed us how the rut is properly executed. So much fun we had with that amazing creature. He brought more cows into the fray than any other with his pits and boy did we have to be safe because they came from every sector to answer that stomp. We hope to get as much fun footage this year, but the bar is set pretty high!

@@moosepoop Thank you as always, MP!! Hahahaha yeah, it cooled off. About 6º but at least we're not in the southwest US! Oh I love a good storm! ⛈⚡⛈⚡Today we have tornado 🌪warnings too! Scary/fun! This morning I was in the kayak and got caught 🚣♀in a downpour. 🌧🌧🌧Loved it! No wind, straight down rain. The loons were actually diving escape the hard pelting rain. 🐦🐥💦💧☔A beaver came out to munch on pond lilies until he saw me and put the smack down on me! 🦫💦Gotta love it!

Any idea how many cows a bull will mate with in a season?
It can be up to 25. They are busy boys!
How early do you start finding fresh rut pits? 20 Sep? 1 Oct?
We've seen that behavior about a week after the velvet is shed, rr. So sooner than 20 September. But there is a lot of that activity then for sure!
@MooseManNaturePhotos Wow, very interesting. Dr. Victor VanBallenburghe (USGS, Ret) studied moose in Denali for 30+ years and said he could almost set his watch by the date when moose would start shedding. All animals aren't the same, but the first moose would invariably start shedding on 25 Aug.
I've noticed behavioral and activity level changes in early Sep, but I didn't know rut pit activity started that soon. Very cool. Many thanks!
@@rrbernhardt5810 As a matter of fact, Rick knew Vic VanBallenburghe, they'd had several phone conversations NH - AK. Vic just died last September, sadly. And yes, the velvet shedding starts right around Aug 23-25 That's when 22 sheds his, like clockwork! And right after that they start grunting and the pits will get dug (but they don't necessarily have all the ammo they need yet!) You're most welcome, rr! And thanks for the ask!

I've seen Ruth it's as early as August 20th. I used to watch daily how certain things changed. It is such a learning curve. Once you know and understand it all it sure helps. Then all you have to do is sit back and watch.
Didn’t realize how aggressive the females are
They're crazy about claiming those rut pits, Susan. It's not the bull they want yet, it's the pheromones in the pits. So much fun! But safety first because the hooves do get flying!
More people in Alaska get stomped by cows than bulls. A bull will normally walk away but a cow will kick the heck out of you.
