As for "Why Can't I", Liz Phair was the darling of the alternative rock era of the 1990's, but by the time she released the song and her album the alt-rock scene had already transitioned out of grunge and post-grunge and on to nu-metal and pop punk, so she was just trying to keep up with the times. Jewel's Intuition is smart and profound. The lyrics were to make the exact point. She has stated most people failed to get the message she was portraying with this song. It's a classic!!
Madonna's first single from her next album literally hit number one in charts of 41 countries and earning a place in the 2007 Guinness Book of World Records, as the song topping the charts in most countries. I don't think American Life ruined her reputation, it was just something different.
It ended her reign as the Queen of Pop. She didnt turn into a touring legend act after that, but something in the middle. Not a has-been cruising on past hits, but no longer a trend setter.
@@chrisp679 Jewel had already gone from folk to soft-rock to country. I don't know why this was out of bounds. There's that one other female artist that's big today that has done similar. Taylor something-or-other.
I think it’s incredibly unfair to Liz that she was shunned by critics for not giving them the sound they wanted. The track should be evaluated on its own merits and Why Can’t I is an excellent pop track.
So I thought so too lol until I looked into all her music and you might know "Extraordinary" if you watched Raising Helen with Kate Hudson and Hayden Panettiere.
Exile In Guyville is a classic, highly recommend! Also at the same time, Liz Phair even says in interviews that her 90’s work didn’t really feel like herself, hence the timing of her self-titled album.
Intuition is unironically good even though I still saw the clear irony in the whole thing. The fact that people don’t understand it shows how many don’t really listen to the lyrics.
Milli Vanilli wouldn't have happened if the music industry wasn't so focused on looks. The music and vocals were good. But the people who created it didn't look good enough for them
Exactly. Well put sir.If your arse is the right shape you can get a recording contract these days. Doesn't matter if you can't sing, they can auto-tune the fuck out of it.
100% And Milli Vanili wasn't the only manufactured good looks group. Look at C&C music factor. Martha Wash was the voice of Everybody Dance Now but they didn't put her on the cover. We should feel more sympathy for the voice artists.
Intuition is great! She’s mocking the shit that people are judging it on?! How isn’t that noticed? She was making fun of it kind of like Pink’s “Stupid Girls”
And Pink's actually taken jabs at the pop industry multiple times via her music video for "My Own Worst Enemy," lines in songs like "So What," etc. Phair and Jewel were just changing their sound temporarily, and the industry reacted the same way they did every time Neil Young decided to experiment.
I think the difference was when Pink was doing it she was doing it in a funny way. Stupid Girls was definitely a comedy! But in Jewel's video she wasn't acting sexy in a funny way, she was flat out acting sexy! The satire and sarcasm was a lot more subtle and a lot of people just didn't get it.
None of you understand, you're all so blind. Both videos, by Pink and Jewel, were made to increase their popularity by having them be half naked in their videos while disguising it as "social commentary". They knew most people wouldn't get that and they would just watch it to see them half naked, and that's exactly what they were banking on. But then they could still lean on the excuse of "we did it as a joke!"
@@CesarJoel94 The song was satire. Jewel massively overestimated her audience. Turns out they're mostly stupid people who like minor keys and not thinking for even a moment. Years later, I still find it hard to believe people took that song seriously. Looks like I'm almost alone in seeing the sledgehammer satire she used.
@@TheMpo1986 He was looking for a good director for the video but the one he wanted wasn't available. So, Kenny Ortega, a famous choreographer, got the job. So the video was conceived by a choreographer and not a music video director.
EXACTLY it was commentary. Same exact thing with Madonna's song. It's not Beethoven, it's art that doesn't take itself too seriously, and why is that such a bad thing? You know?
She was a solid indie artist in the 90s. Primarily played on college radio. Not that commercial grunge stuff on pop/rock radio. I understand she had just had a baby and wanted a hit single in the 2000s to cash in. But she blatantly sounded like Avril, even using the same producer. Using the same "hushed" singing all the other pop stars were doing at the time.
It's sad that Milli Vanilli were contracted to lip sync, since both Rob and Fab could sing. Rob sadly died in his early 30s, but Fab managed to release songs, under his real voice.
Remember my dad telling me the true story that they’re forced to lip sync and I was sad. While rest in peace for Rob, I congrat Fab not only using his real voice in songs, but building up his own career without that type of management again
Yeah, but it was still considered rebellious to go against gender roles, which is one reason why hair metal was so popular among edgy teens. Being androgynous isn’t considered edgy these days.

Okay, 'Why Can't I?' And 'Intuition' sound really good. If artists want to explore with new styles why shouldn't they? Fans and critics should support these endeavours instead of acting like they own the artists or their direction.
@@theplaguegamer6216 I understand this sentiment, but it is still putting artists in a box, of sorts, as well as creating a dilemma when you consider how musicians are often considered boring or unimaginative/ a one trick pony, when they stick to a formula that seemingly works. I always loved "Why Can't I?", having loved it since it featured in "13 Going on 30." Sure, the bubblegum pop song was a far cry from Phair's more edgier material, but I always had a soft spot for it.
This was most zoomers’ introduction of Liz Phair, especially since her songs sounded like they wouldn’t feel out of place from Hilary Duff’s debut album!

Billy squier originally didn't want to do that video and was told by people close to him that that would ruin his career, but the producers convince them to do it. It was a bad situation all around.

Intuition is a satirical song at the end of the day. Two for one. The fact that it went through in its context is the impressive thing. I admit I was put off of it at first knowing Jewel’s style but I think she pulled it off rather well. She’s a gem of a human.
All men and most women are too.she still looks great for her age,I can't believe her and Kevin Costner are dating though, and wtf did she see in Sean Penn he is unbearable?
Liz was an indie artist that got played on college radio. Not Top 40 rock and pop stations. "Never Said'" was played a little bit in the 90s on mainstream radio. Kind of like if all you listened to was mainstream US radio in the 90s, you wouldn't know Bjork or Sonic Youth. Liz Phair's "Why Can't I" would be equivalent to "Jack White collaborating with the Backstreet Boys" in some bizarro world.
He would've been better off grabbing that guitar on set and playing it for the whole video instead of writhing around on the floor, performing embarrassing dance moves. What a train wreck.
Such a disappointing release, after 3 really good albums, Witness sounded like the songs that would be playing as background at the clubs, when you'd rather go get another drink or to the restroom rather than hear the actual song. It was so so so bad.
okay it’s a bad album i’m not gonna lie, but the song witness is soooooo gooooooood bro. like so good. only good song on that album. okay i also like bon appetit
In Witness album, Katy Perry just stopped making music for average people with low IQ and made some really good songs for the first time in her career. That's why you hate that album.
Intuition was completely meant as a spoof of the style she was doing. That was the whole point,I guess too many people were too stupid to understand that.
Intuition didn’t “sound like” it was criticizing itself, it flat-out WAS, and that made it both amazingly hilarious and catchy as hell. And “Why Can’t I” is arguably Phair’s best known song, and again, catchy as hell.
Oh we got it alright. It was an excuse for her to be half naked in a video while disguising it as "commentary". She knew damn well that it would be more popular on MTV because of the content, but she could still lean on the "commentary" excuse. It's really quite pathetic how you all fell for it.
I remember when that Billy Squier video first aired. I was about to turn 13. I remember older kids (especially the girls) constantly saying how awesome Billy Squier was - but when I and my similar-aged friends saw this on MTV we were like "Really?!? What IS this?" We didn't really talk about how bad it was, I think, because of the older kid's admiration for the guy...but it was about this time that we started gravitating towards bands like Motley Crue and Ratt. It's a shame because now I see how musically talented he was. If only somebody had stopped him from making that video,
No, they weren't ahead of their time, at least not with “Intuition” and “Why Can’t I.” They changed their style into the type of music that was already popular at the time.
Exactly, if "obnoxious anti-pop gatekeepers" means their fans that were the only ones that had made them, and were keeping them, successful. You don't know how to use "gatekeeper". You can't gatekeep something that's not yours. Folk fans did absolutely nothing to keep the artists out of pop. The artists abandoned folk fans for pop fans, but the pop fans didn't care for them. No gatekeeping involved or necessary.
I don't even like the guy. But a white rapper winning an award over a black rapper is a "bridge too far?" 😂 And it sparked a discussion about "white artists in hip-hop spaces" where I assume they apparently don't belong for some idiotic, ridiculous reasons? I certainly don't buy these "statements" of white rappers being rewarded OVER black artists just for the mere fact that they are white? I didn't know that it was frowned upon for white guys to rap. They don't really dominate rap/hip-hop in the first place. So I don't buy the alleged preferential treatment white rappers get over black rappers. The term "white privilege" alone is silly and ridiculous. And it's used all too often as a lame, pathetic excuse when someone plays the race card.
This! In fact, Eminem himself has spoken about and shown in 8 Mile, the difficulty he has faced in the Rap industry dominated by blacks. This on top of the struggles he faced growing up and the lack of this so-called "white privilege" that doesn't exist! He has won many awards and is now a beloved, well respected and feared rap artist by many artists of different music genres (including rap and hip-hop), and all races!
In Witness album, Katy Perry just stopped making music for average people with low IQ and made some really good songs for the first time in her career. That's why that album flopped.
Don't let them fool ya. This is about "Hind Hall". "The people, they won't leave What is threatenin' about divesting and wantin' peace?" Mojo can't say they're critical of Macklemore for that so they reach for something else.
Jewel getting dropped by her record label surprises me. How many flops have other artists made and they don't get completely hung out to dry. She was a great artist.
@@marcus813 they didn't even drop her, they just didn't renew as she was with them since the 90s and fulfilled her contract. The rumour was due to lackluster sales but I was a teen then and it was on tv every single time you had an ad or switched to radio. So why buy an album for a song you hear literally 4-5 times a day.
She was planning to make a country album and through all the years with Atlantic records they didn’t have the relationship with country radio. She has so many country songs that never got to be on radio because of this.
Metallica never suffered backlash because of that song. It was the perceived whininess of Lars' beef with Napster, the dubious quality of the Reload album, and the split with Jason Newstead that made them stumble. I noticed you didn't mention David Allen Coe and the wildly racist and nearly forgotten tune that got him pulled from the radio for over a decade. That's ok nobody does. It's super great to forget history.
Load did me in. There's only 1 or 2 songs I liked off that one. I like Reload more, but it still kinda sucked. I'll just stick to 80's Metallica. All those were top notch
Really? David Allen Coe is a nobody in the grand scheme of things, so weird to specifically pointing him out lol Don't worry, Metallica is alive and well, chill...
@@Sue_VI remember James saying that they did both albums "because they wanted to" with no regards about the fans so they can't complain about the fan's reactions at the time... They did expand their audience but it was a very arrogant phase of the band that resulted in Jason leaving and Lars not reading the room about the Napster fiasco.
@redacted2275 I'm so chill you could hang a side of meat in me for a week. In the grand scheme of things, who am I? And who the f*** are you? I was making a smart ass observation about a poorly concieved UA-cam video not getting my undies in a bunch about Coe. Have a super nifty day!
I mean, the majority of metallica listeners like Load and Reload. I'll happily listen to everything from kill em all to current, except most of st anger. Bands get stale if they only have 1 sound forever, there will always be everything before Load if that's the only sound you like, but you can tell from Garage Inc that their music influences are way more varied than that.
Why can't I and intuition aren't bad songs nor are they bad videos if you enjoy the styles, the artist, the messages, etc. Jewel was intentionally making herself seem like a product instead of a person to point a finger at consumerism. She even says "Follow your heart" at one point because she's saying DON'T sell yourself. "Why Can't I" is the only song I know immediately by Liz Phair. That's not to say she doesn't have other good songs, but that's definitely her most famous one so did it really hurt her?
I remember watching that episode. Think she was going to a concert of theirs too. It must have been made shortly before they were found out, because I'm pretty sure I saw the episode a few years ever that.
You have the facts for #1 Million Vanilli totally wrong. Their follow up Rob & Fab DID come out, it just didn’t sell anything. Fab has since release music solo.
Metallica's issue had nothing to do with a song. They were considered sell outs for single handedly taking down Napster which provided free music to listeners. They wanted to be seen as rebels but people found out they just wanted to be paid.
I don’t think Milli Vanilli should’ve gotten as much hate as they did. Of all the things this are terrible musicians have done lip syncing isn’t the worst.
Many have had their career ruined by getting caught lip-syncing, but they all actually recorded their own songs. MV weren't allowed to even do that by the label, who subsequently let them take the fall. Sad story.
It's a shame what happened to Jewel, because I was more frustrated with Nelly Furtado, who hails from my home country, for doing virtually the same thing. Both women did kind of indy singer/songwriter type of music and produced some great songs, even if they didn't top any Billboard or international music charts. Nelly decided she wanted to do hip hop/R&B and I was so disappointed. She caved to what was popular at the time. I would have thought Jewel's lack of success switching to a different image and genre of music would have allowed her to go back to what she was good at and succeed. It didn't work, unfortunately. For Nelly, she succeeded, which meant the Canadian folk-inspired music was going to be a thing of the past and most people today remember her for her mid 2000s work.
Same, I was surprised when she dropped loose and the songs are highly sexualized. But she succeeded and got lots of new fans, despite alienated some. And Timbaland was probably most responsible for her 3rd album's success.
I always thought Jewel's 0304 was intended as a one-off experiment. I could list many famous rock bands and solo artists that put out one album in another style before returning to what we expect. None of them got the same level of backlash.
Milli Vanilli were victims of their producers who never allowed them to sing, but kept promising them that they could 'soon'. Until this day, the facts are not all clear and there was a recent documentary that backs this
Milli Vanilli :You know it's true. They lip synced all of their songs but they lip synced this song during a live concert and when the fans found out they were beyond pissed.
Part of the issue w/ Liz Phair & Jewel's songs featured here is that while they're fun and successful pop songs that may have introduced younger audiences to both artists, they were so different from their prior output there was nothing for their new fans to latch onto, which is a weird loss for two women with a good amount of prior albums.
I think it is, for Jewel, when you look at her earlier music videos, they looked wholesome and not "edgy" vs "Intuition" where it was seen as a Britney Spears esque (when Spears angered parents at the one MTV VMA).
Milli Vanilli was a horrendously sad tale of two guys and a band who were all thrown under the bus by music execs after the scheme they were forced into failed. It was squarely the fault of the ones who made them lipsync instead of just letting them sing, using them for their looks and ditching them when it blew up in their face.
I discovered Billy Squire because of the song Rock Me Tonight playing on the radio a lot in my area and bought a copy of the cd Best of Billy Squire and that cd got borrowed a lot from me when I was in university. I thought the video was amusing and that was how I found out the name of the artist was did the song I loved.
Jewel is FINE as F in that video and she CLD headline any arena right now. I don't recall anything 'repuation' ruining for Mrs. kilcher!(Yes..I. A Fan!❤️)
For Squier, it wasn't that he stepped outside of gender roles that was the problem. It was that the video was just terrible. The choreography was awful and it looked dumb.
Amazing how Milli Vanilli was canceled for not singing their music and yet Jennifer Lopez walks away scott-free to flop another year after doing the same thing... this is simply not fair.

Jewel's Intuition was a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the music scene during that time. She said so herself in early interviews for the album.
She was also recovering from a broken collarbone and couldn't play the guitar the way she normally would have for a video.
She wasn’t one who should’ve been making the commentary though.

Because it’s too drastic a shift, even if it is parody.

Fergie - The National Anthem
Part of the issue w/ Liz Phair & Jewel's songs featured here is that while they're fun and successful pop songs that may have introduced younger audiences to both artists, they were so different from their prior output there was nothing for their new fans to latch onto, which is a weird loss for two women with a good amount of prior albums.
I think it is, for Jewel, when you look at her earlier music videos, they looked wholesome and not "edgy" vs "Intuition" where it was seen as a Britney Spears esque (when Spears angered parents at the one MTV VMA).
OMG,. billy squier.. .. we were watching and this came on.. it was WHAT??
Milli Vanilli was a horrendously sad tale of two guys and a band who were all thrown under the bus by music execs after the scheme they were forced into failed. It was squarely the fault of the ones who made them lipsync instead of just letting them sing, using them for their looks and ditching them when it blew up in their face.
I can't listen to their music the same way I did back in the late '80s, but I can't blame Fab and the late Rob for that mess.

wasn't Phair
Macklemore lost his reputation when he came out with his first song.
A Fan!❤️)
I think all most as bad was Ashley Simpson Saturday night live performance
It seems, some of these artists were victims of political censorship, rather than ruining their careers because of some bad taste thing.
For Squier, it wasn't that he stepped outside of gender roles that was the problem. It was that the video was just terrible. The choreography was awful and it looked dumb.
Amazing how Milli Vanilli was canceled for not singing their music and yet Jennifer Lopez walks away scott-free to flop another year after doing the same thing... this is simply not fair.
lol, this is a Tood in the Shadows video in disguise.
Wait so people stopped listening to Liz Phair because she went from pop to…..pop?
No. She went from 90s alternative rock to pop.
@@JeremySnyder-p3d that “alternative rock” sounds an awful lot like pop to me 😬😬
Metallica did not ruin their reputation. They are still huge today. Even doing an amazing world tour right now.
Half of these are just people who dont like when artist try something new or speak about real issues.
What was Billy Squire thinking or trying to achieve with his “Rock Me Tonite” video?
