Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.

When I got into American made clothing approximately two years ago.. Filson is obviously the first brand that pops up on most people searches. I'm so glad I didn't fall into their trap of riding on Heritage rather than true American made clothing.

I started looking into Filson a couple weeks ago and I don’t remember what video I was watching, but somebody in the comments mentioned weatherwool so then I checked them out and fell in love with the anorak.
Then I saw this channel had a weatherwool anorak review and I loved it even more! Needless to say.. I switched my attention over to weatherwool and bought a midweight lynx anorak. Should be coming in the mail tomorrow!
I will admit spending $625 is a lot, but I like nice things 😁 hopefully it lives up to expectations!

20:19 Hey Carl. I don't know if you know, but when it comes to determining the warmth of a duck/goose down garment, you need to look for two things: (1) fill power and (2) down weight. Fill power tells how lofty the garment will become. Fill weight tells you how much insulation is in the garment. From experience, a jacket with 850+ fill power containing 6oz of fill weight can keep most people warm in the 20s or even teens with only a t-shirt underneath.

Hi Carl. I don’t think u realize it but you will do a piece on Filson but then go back to how Weatherwool has a better version of whatever Filson piece you’re discussing. Lol. I find it funny because I was a big Filson guy until I discovered weatherwool. Filson has the brand and the name but the quality has definitely gone down in the last decade or so. Weatherwool is this fledgling sort of company without the recognition of Filson but there quality cannot be touched.

Also have a love , hate relationship with Filson but I buy Filson for alot of reasons. But you never mention Filson life time warranty, most of their products 10, 20, 30 years from now as they wear out can be replaced or repaired. Remember buy once cry once. Buy better own less. I would like to here more about life time warranty in your reviews. I try to buy clothing I will never have to buy again. For example I awn 7 pairs of darn tough Vermont socks . I will never have to buy another pair Love the channel and have a happy holiday to you and your family

    Hey Carl,
First off happy holidays man! I really dig your channel and I certainly don’t take your suggestions with a grain of salt, I trust your opinions 🤙. I like a lot of the Filson products however I don’t like paying big moneys to find out it was something imported, especially at these prices! Your boot reviews are how I stumbled onto your channel and I had purchased a pair of Whites black roughout Smokejumpers and I have to say I was a little let down regarding the top leather over the front part of my foot particularly ( obviously for their prices! ). I’m still waiting for my Urban Loggers to get shipped but after watching all your reviews on Nick’s I’m pretty damn certain I’ll be thrilled with them ( I also ordered those in black roughout so I’m curious to see the thickness differences compared to my Whites ) once they arrive and I’ll definitely mention what I think on another one of your videos.
Getting back to Filson, I have a few of their Tin Cloth jackets and I really like my shirt cruiser even though it was pretty pricey. I’m also waiting for them to make another run of their Moleskin Jac Shirts which I saw in green which they are all sold out of now and I hope they decide to make those in black or even charcoal color, we’ll see I suppose.
Thanks again for all the fantastic reviews, I wish I stumbled across your channel sooner because I would’ve saved a ton of cash.
    Tommy~

Filson Lined Wool Cape Coat looks incredible and pretty good price, and then you go straight to more expensive alternatives. LOL. (I like the deck jackets too). Northwest Wool Shirt looks pretty solid as well. Let's give some credit where credit is due. I have the Down Cruiser Vest and it's pretty great. Duluth makes a 60 or 70% wool bomber coat with a layer of thinsulate for extra warmth. It's normally like 220.00 I think but I got it on sale for about 100 bucks. The Field Pants are great, though it seldom gets cold enough to need them here in South Dakota, but the heavy hard-finished wool gabardines they no longer make I wear pretty often as they’re dressier than jeans or any other trousers shy of a bespoke winter suit. Those wear like iron. Alas - discontinued.

Love these catalog reviews Carl! If I could offer just one critique, you're really great about disclaiming style preferences as "not for me, but I won't judge you if you like it", but when it comes to price, the same consideration isn't given. You often say that something is just expensive, or overpriced, or "a lot of money" but that's just as relative as style. For me, yeah, $900 for a packer coat is a lot of money, but for someone else it might not be, in the same way that a yellow plaid colorway might not be for you but is for someone else. At the end of the day, it's your channel, do what you want, but just pointing out an inconsistency in how you give consideration for things that might be a subjective experience.

I'm looking for a warm, wind-resistant jacket for city riding in cool weather (12-17°C/54-63°F), but which has a heritage style to it. What do you think of the Filson Lined Tin Cloth Cruiser or maybe a Tin Cloth Work Jacket + Mackinaw Wool Vest? Pricey, yes, bit is that feasible or crazy? A second question would be if there are any better alternatives (I don't want leather or anything purpose-designed for motorcycle riding.) Thanks!

    Love these catalog reviews!
I am in the market for an overcoat, if you will, for winter. I wouldn’t mind insulation but it’s also not needed where I am in the Midwest. Any recommendations under $300?
Note, I prefer a coat like length (not a moto jacket).

Not for under $300 but if you are willing to part with about $500 or so you should check out Schott NYC

Filson has dropped the Tin Cloth Double Logger. Darn shame. But this is emblematic of their turn to fashion rather than outdoorsman workwear.

Man once I add 30% USD > CAD exchange rate and then the 13% HST sales tax - these become very very expensive garments for us Canadians. But I’d love a few pieces if I found a deal.

Fun vid, I always enjoy your Filson catalog videos. I don’t really understand your beef with the Alaskan guid shirt. $150 for an imported shirt. In the 22 flannel video wasn’t your #1 an Iron heart, $350 and imported? I can’t afford $359 for a shirt so I won’t likely personally know the difference. I’m really not trying to be difficult, maybe you made a video where you elaborated on why the Alaskan is so bad, but I haven’t seen it? Anyway, cheers and happy holidays.

It may be easy to miss the point of Filson in the modern market. If I want to be thrifty, I can get great value at the military surplus store. I do it often. Filson is there when you want THAT particular piece. If Nordstrom can get $150 for a cotton dress shirt, there will be a market for some Filson products. Not everything a persons wears needs to be of one iconic brand. I do wear one of my cruiser jackets for winter work ( I need the map pocket for a tablet in the field). The other cruisers are the limited editions I collect because I enjoy them. I grew up in a logging family with tattered hand-me-down wool. It worked, I liked it! Besides my current work, it's a nostalgia thing for me. I think that may be the case for many people. Others just want to look "woodsy". that's great; it keeps Filson in business for us all to enjoy the occasional purchase. Some times you just want to know it's a Filson and that's enough for a present for yourself. So, ok xyz brand makes a better windbreaker or whatever, that's fine. Xyz is probably not going to deliver the intangible that a Filson might. I'd buy their windbreakers because I don't care about the intangible for that piece of gear. I think a very large portion of us buy FIlson just because we want their stuff for reasons other than utility. It is what makes the value added world go round.
That Nordstrom shirt or polo shirt is very often about image. It's a huge part of the market. Now here's my dig: if you aspire to be Alpha , get a FIlson. If you want to be with the mass crowd, get a North Face. If you really want to be a beta, go with patagonia. Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors for a reason and none of them are about survival food ;) Suit your mood and be happy!
Last winter I even backcountry skied one day in a Filson cruiser. It was a fun nostalgic day alternative to my usual ski gear. Fun is fun; go get some!

I have to say as much as I like stormy kromer caps they generally are not as good of quality as the equivalent filson cap as long as we are talking either wool or tin cloth stuff. I have the waxed canvas ship john x stormy kromer cap and the filson tin cloth caps all blow that out of the water in quality. Also I really want to love weather wool but I just am not sure of the designs maybe I'd have to see them in person but I think looks wise I'd actually prefer the Filson lined wool packer over the weather wool equivalent but theres no question the weather wool is higher quality and their price certainly reflects that.
Ultimately in alot of ways I'm stuck with filson though because almost all the smaller US made stuff from folks like Dehen just doesn't fit fat guys which is a bummer but understandable for sure.

I have a few Filson products. The og briefcase, a mackinaw wool vest, and a quilted Jac shirt (which is more of a jacket not a shirt). I would like to get a few more things but it is getting harder and harder to justify the price. Being from Canada too the exchange is bad right now so let’s say for that packer coat that is almost 1000 that’s almost 1400 Canadian with taxes. And if anyones wondering, no, I don’t wear my Filson stuff for actual “work”, that’s for my cheaper stuff haha most my Filson stuff is for going out or casual.

Frankly - at this price tag Filson sells livestyle to people with pockets full of money and like the look and feeling like an adventurer but actually are city dwellers . I am based in Europe, got the mackinaw cruiser and some luggage a couple of years ago. Today's pricing is far too high and there are alternative brands which are better looking with a better value for prize... Take the stuff Manifattura Ceccarelli from Italy does. Great wool and waxed cotton product, with a much better cut and fit.
